Polishes -China Glaze -Ruby Pumps

on 4/15/2018 2:15:00 PM

Bold, sparkly, versatile red polish. It's a classic red, slightly cooler than neutral, and SUCH lovely glitter! This was originally part of a Wizard-of-Oz themed set, so imagine Dorothy's ruby slippers, but with super-fine microglitter. If you're a fan of OPI's INRAW, but you want shimmery sparkle, this is your jam.

Note: I say Ruby Pumps is versatile b/c it can be painted over other colours to drastically alter the shade and tone of red. Craving a deep rich RV red with shimmer? Start with a layer of your fave purple or wine. (OPI's Skyfall is SO lovely.) Want to go gothic or space-aged? Start with a grey-blue or teal. Want a light, tinsel-y effect? Apply 1 coat of Ruby Pumps over metallic silver or pearl! (This is a great way to use tricky silvers shades that get streaky on their own. The red holo-glitter hides imperfections.) Added perk of this strategy is that you avoid staining your nails, and your 1st layer of polish is WAY more forgiving of imperfect application. This is my favourite way to use Ruby Pumps, finished wth a super-glossy topcoat.

TLDR; Ruby Pumps is a versatile red with fine red sparkle. The sparkle is dense. The base is more jelly than cream. If you're not sure what kind of red works w/ your skintone, this can be painted over top of any other polish for amazing control over undertones. It does require a topcoat to feel finished, and like all sparkles, removal requires extra patience. But I love this polish! It's the most lovely and versatile red I own.

Polishes -China Glaze -Mix And Mingle

on 3/31/2018 11:12:00 AM

Mix and Mingle is from the holiday 2015 Cheers! collection, and it is still widely available online. It is a cool, slightly dusty purple cream shade. Even tough I think of the shade a slightly dusty, it does have a bright tinge to it, so that you can clearly see that it is a true purple - you won't ever mistake this shade as black, burgundy, navy or blue. I like this polish but wouldn't replace it if I lost it, as Looking Bootiful [Ghouls Night Out] is extremely similar to this... and was only released a few months before it!

The first coat can be a bit streaky, but it evens out and is fully opaque within two thicker or three coats. Not amazing, but as the colour is awesome I still recommend it if you don'town Looking Bootiful. Using my usual base and top coat, this polish will last me anywhere between two to four days with only minimal wear. But as I'm a self powered wheelchair user I'm tough on my hands and am always catching my nails, so I can't really speak for how long lasting the formula is overall.

Love this!!! I am a cool leaning bright/clear winter and it matches my fans.

Picked this at the nail salon for a date because it matched the fan and am loving it for spring, so wanted to share.

I was worried it would be too juvenile and/or pink for my desired professional look (pink is not part of my palette for work) but it turns out I don't mind it for work because it looks more like a twist on red on me, or maybe it is just deep enough to have some gravitas.

If you are warmer than me I bet it may look more "pink" on you.

Polishes -China Glaze -Moment in the Sunset

on 3/20/2018 4:28:00 PM

I'm a big fan of China Glaze, which makes my disappointment with this polish that much worse. It's a gorgeous light salmon pink with gold shimmer. The colour is truly beautiful.

The formula, however, is terrible. I've been wearing nail polish for forty years or so (yikes!) and I've rarely experienced a formula this bad for bubbles. Ugh! I've tried wearing this polish on several occasions, and no matter what, I get bubbles. I know how to apply polish, I know steps to take to reduce bubbling, and yet no matter what, at least a couple of nails have bubbles, and since this is a shimmer, they show like crazy and completely ruin the look. I tried putting on base coat and waiting until the next day to apply this. I tried putting the coats of polish on quickly, I tried letting the first coat dry for up to an hour before the second, but no matter what, the second coat produces at least a few bubbles on at least a couple of nails. Frankly, it's damned annoying.

I want to wear this polish, I want to figure out a way to make it work, but I'm about at the end of my patience, and I'm super disappointed with China Glaze on this one. If I was a nail polish newbie, I might think it was me, but with 400+ polishes in my current collection and 35+ years of nail polish experience, I have to say it's the formula. Maybe I just got a bad batch or something, I don't know, but I don't think I'll even be putting this in my "destash" box. This is probably going to go directly in the garbage so I don't inflict it on anyone else.

Only use I can think of for this is a pedicure, because flaws and imperfections like bubbles are less likely to show on toenails, but even then, I don't know if I can be bothered to try.

What happened here, China Glaze?

Polishes -China Glaze -Athlete Chic

on 3/18/2018 1:01:00 PM

Beautiful! From their Chic Physique Collection for Spring 2018, China Glaze's Athlete Chic is a bright and cheerful medium orange creme that leans just slightly pinky-coral. It dries to a gorgeous candy-like finish and looks awesome on the nail. I just love it!

Great formula too. Opaque in two coats and no problems with application or wear.

If you're looking for a fun and flattering orange polish, I recommend this one very highly. I'd definitely buy it again!
