This definitely caused me to break out. It was the only new addition to my skin care routine and after just a week of using it, I have pimples when I normally very rarely get pimples. I don't see what could be the culprit though - the ingredients list looks really innocent. Maybe the witch hazel used, despite not being distilled in alcohol, is too irritating. Maybe it's the rose fragrance. It also really burned my cheeks.
I wish this worked for me, seeing as so many people on Makeupalley love it and it's very inexpensive but I'm truly alarmed that my skin that isn't even blemish prone has sprouted some nasty looking red zits as a result.

So far out of all the toners I've ever used this is the best one I can use daily. I like it a lot but I'm not in love with it. It does work well with my skin where as most toners tend to dry my skin out pretty bad, this doesn't do that. Alcohol free toners are the only ones I'll use now because alcohol does bad things to my skin. I do find toning to be an essential step in my skincare routine though as I feel my moisturizers and treatments penetrate into my skin better. My skin also tends to clog easily and it doesn't exfoliate itself properly, I find this toner helps to keep the clogging at bay for most of the day and keeps my skin smooth and free of any flakiness.
PACKAGING:
I wish this was packaged differently as I do get some leakage if it tips over or if I'm traveling with it I have to be very careful. The cap just needs to be more secure. Otherwise it has a pretty standard clear plastic bottle with a flip cap lid.
SCENT:
There is added fragrance to this which kind of put me off at first as I typically prefer un-scented skincare unless it naturally has a scent due to the ingredients. But I guess the scent is of natural origin so I don't mind. It has quite a strong rose scent so anyone sensitive to that might want to look else where. It doesn't bother me and I really like it now. It disappears on your skin so it doesn't linger.
WHAT IT DOES FOR MY SKIN:
Like I said, it keeps the clogging and flakiness at bay. My pores always look and feel clearer whenever I use this. I'm unsure if it helps with acne as I don't have too bad of a problem with acne but this does clean off any left over residue on my skin after cleansing. This isn't drying at all on my combination dry and slightly oily skin. I don't find it to be super moisturizing either just very lightly, but that's not something that's really important to me in terms of toners. I feel as if it is helping to lighten some of my post acne marks but very gradually. I like that it contains the rose and the grapefruit extracts as those are known to help with scarring. I always use this in the day before applying my moisturizer and my makeup. If feel like my makeup doesn't clog my skin as much and it helps to balance my skin so I don't get overly oily as quickly but I wouldn't say this is oil-controlling.
HOW I USE IT:
Before I apply my moisturizer day and night.
PROS:
-alcohol free
-dye free
-good ingredients especially for dry, combination, and scarred skin
-helps keep pores clear and smooths out flakiness
-isn't drying
-nice scent
-fairly cheap
CONS:
-poor cap on bottle, prone to spilling
-scent maybe too heavy for some

Affordable, alcohol free, chemical free (based on my assessment from the ingredients listed), pleasant smelling, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging awesomeness...need I rave some more?!

I've been using Thayers in the morning for over a year, and absolutely love it (if you can't already tell!!!). I only use it in the morning, and the huge 12 oz bottle lasts me about 9 months! I'm excited to try the Lavender scent when I complete this bottle!

I really wanted this to work, but it I didn't. I am dealing with 3 cystic pimples on my forehead, 3 small pimples between my eyebrows, and 2 cystic pimples on my chin and I know it is from this toner. I had previously enjoyed absolutely glowing skin from using Dr. Bronner's lavendar liquid soap followed by a diluted apple cider vinegar toner simply consisting of 1 part avc and 4 parts water; however, my boyfriend hates the smell of acv (I find it tolerable since I like to put it on my salads). So, I came upon this toner online, saw all the positive reviews (mixed in with a few about cystic acne) and decided to take my chances and at least I would smell like a rose instead of vinegar. I used this toner once at night, and again in the morning and by the end of the day, my cystic acne had erupted in full. I washed my face that night and was horrified to see all these red, large pimples on my face. I had to go in to "emergency mode" repair for my skin. Did a 1-hour raw honey mask followed by acv toner and spot treatment. I just looked in the mirror and the pimples are still visible, yet sensitive and somewhat sore. These are not my run of the mill pimples -- these are painful boil-like eruptions. After looking at the ingredients list, I have no doubt that glycerin is the culprit.

**I gave this a try one more time because my face was really dry after I washed it at night. I put it on lightly, waited 10 minutes, then splashed it off and patted dry. I didn't get any pimples and it served its purpose of hydrating. I will use this when I have dry patches and will use it sparingly. I think I broke out the last time I used it because I used too much of the product and I used it in the morning (and my face gets really oily during the day, which leads to clogged pores). I now just wash my face at night. And in the morning, splash warm water only on my face to cleanse it. I find that washing it again in the morning actually makes my face even more oily during the day, ironic as that is.

So disappointed. Let me just say I LOVE Thayer's Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera. It's the best thing that's ever happened to my skin, helping clear my acne, calming down redness that comes after I pick my skin like a crazy person, etc. But I decided to buy this one because, well, I thought it'd smell better. And it does! Really, the smell is wonderful. I love it so much I'm hunting for a rose-scented perfume now, but that's all the good in it. It does NOTHING for my skin. In fact, ever since I've been using this twice a day (for about two months now), I've been getting horrid, painful cystic acne on my jawline, forehead, chin.... well, it's awful, every day a new cyst would appear. I stopped using it a couple of days ago and already my skin is calmer I hate writing a bad review for a Thayer's product, but this really just gave me the worst reaction ever.

Man, I was really hoping this product would work for me! I bought it a few weeks ago and used it for two days and, no joke, I broke out with two big cysts on my chin on the third day. I do not get cysts (I'm more of closed comedone/blackhead kinda gal), so I was pretty disturbed and knew this product had to be the culprit. I have no idea why, because the ingredient list seems pretty harmless. I also wasn't a fan of how it made my face feel - weirdly sticky and not at all pleasant.

Glad it works for others and really would have loved to add it to my routine, but sadly it's not for me.

This is a staple in my skin regimen. My skin feels squeaky clean after I use this and soft and nourished, unlike other toners/astringents that leave your skin feeling absolutely stripped. Regular witch hazel was doing an okay job, but this one feels much more soothing to my skin.

At about $8/-9 a bottle at Whole Foods, this is a little bit on the expensive side for me, but it's totally worth it and does last a while. I use it every day and I repurchase maybe every 6 months.

I don't understand the point of the squirt bottle cap, and the opening is too small for efficiently soaking cotton balls, which is why I gave it a 2 for packaging. I just pour it into a travel size bottle as the original bottle is too big to carry around anyway, which works perfectly.

I don't know what I would do if they stopped making this.

Given how inexpensive this product is, and how the ingredient list makes it sound like the simple, gentle and effective product for my very sensitive and breakout-prone skin, I really wanted this to work.

Well, a couple of days after I started using it, I was starting to see a few bumps breaking out from my chin, my forehead, and even my cheeks. That was unusual, because I typically only get a couple of hormonal zits at my t-zone around that time of the month. At first I thought it must be the new supplement I was taking for my health, but after checking some of the reviews here that mentions the same issues, I suppose I must stop using this wonderful toner immediately, before my face breaks out further into cysts!

Too bad I am not like the majority of the reviewers here who could benefit from the product. I went through the reviews here before ordering this toner, but I must have missed the negative reviews because I so wanted it to work!

I've used this for 3 days now and it seems to be helping my dry skin. I have acne prone/dry/oily skin and I still have not found a facial moisturizer that I can wear under makeup and doesn't break me out. I was looking for a toner that would clean and moisturizer my face so I can skip a facial moisturizer altogether. So far this stuff is exactly what I've been looking for! I will write an update soon. :)

UPDATE: Switch to Garnier Fresh toner..way better for my skin and it keeps it way more hydrated. I think the Rose fragance started to irritate my face...

I never write reviews for products. I am greedy and read everyone else's reviews. :) Anyway, I felt compelled to write a review for this one and believe I will follow up with some others.
This stuff is hands down amazing! I started using it on Friday with good results. It was quite a switch from my regular witch hazel - very soothing and gentle.
I have been spring cleaning all day today (since like 10AM) and felt nasty so I decided I would use my old toner (another popular witch hazel product that is cut with alcohol) to give my skin an extra cleansing. (I am combo skin, acne prone)
My skin said oh no you didn't just do that. It was red, inflamed and almost raw looking. So I put a little of the rose petal toner on, let it dry and literally turned around and looked in the mirror and was like omg, you are kidding me. ALL the redness was gone and my skin is far from perfect but it looked pretty darned good. It still feels soothed yet that toned, clean feeling you get from a toner.
This one has a very strong rose scent which I love. However, those with allergies and that don't care for scents would not like this one. I believe there is an unscented one.
A+++++ I am happy with this purchase. 9.99 @ Whole Foods for a large bottle. I hope my skin will continue to like this!
