This would be great for thicker hair types, I have thin hair and it just made it look wet and weighed it down. Estee lauder owns Aveda, which means that this product line DOES test on animals.

After a wonderful haircut at my local Aveda salon I got sucked into trying the products for culy hair from the saleswoman. Yes they are expensive but my hair is thanking me months later. I find that combined with the other Be Curly products this really does make my curls defined, soft and smelling delicious. I have long (down to my booty), fine, curly hair with no layers and I found that they longer my hair gets the more my curl stretches out. The Be Curly products really bring out that curl that I have and I don't need a milllion products to get it. My hair doesn't feel crunchy or get flakey.I will be investing in the other Be Curly products when I get back to my salon.

I really wanted to like this product! Especially after reading such glowing reviews about it...but this curl lotion did the exact opposite of what it's supposed to for me. I have naturally wavy/ loosely curled hair, and instead of enhancing my curl, it seemed to counteract the effects of my curling gel and unwind the tendrils a bit, leaving me with a mess of half- curled, half -straight limp hair.
It also smelled terrible! I normally really like Aveda smells- all botanical and natural, but this just smelled like old incense. NOT GOOD!
I would recommend what I normally use over this any day! My normal routine is Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo & Conditioner (I alternate between those and Redken All Soft Shampoo/ Conditioner) + Fresh Curls Curl Definer + John Frieda Clearly Defined Gel. Gives me beautiful, shiny defined waves and loose tendrils. :) continued >>

I have never bought an Aveda product before and I was introduced to this lotion through a sample tube. I was immediately impressed by how little I had to use and how effective it was on my hair. My hair is long and wavy and it tends to get frizzy as the day wears on. I used a quarter-sized amount on my towel-dried hair and I brushed it through with my comb. After letting my hair air-dry and touching it as little as possible, my waves were well defined, smooth, and really shiny! My hair looked great, very healthy! I was hesitant to buy a full-sized bottle because of the price, but after doing a little math I realized a full bottle (6.7 oz) would last me about three months, two and a half if I used it every day. Out of my little sample size tube (0.34 oz) I got four uses out of it, so for the big one, I figure I would get about 78 applications. We'll see how that works out in real life. Caveat: This doesn't seem like it would work well for damaged curly hair. The lotion applies really lightly and doesn't seem overly moisturizing.

I actually love this lotion in conjunction with mousse( I normally use John Frieda or Tresemme). It really defines my wavy hair and gives me more curls then I usually have.
However--I noticed some of the reviewers say their hair became stiff--this product does have protein in it. Protein is good, in moderation. I would not suggest using this everyday. I had the same issue and I decided this would only be used 1-2 a week MAX.

It is about $18 I believe. May sound pricey to some at first but it definitely does last very long as you need very very little.
I do love this--but I wish it did not have protein in it so that I could use it more often. If I was to find something similar minus the protein-I'd go for that. Until then I would keep repurchasing--but probably won't have to for over a year! This bottle has lasted me so long

I really like this lotion in conjunction with Confixor gel. It takes away frizz and gives my hair great texture. I do feel like my hair doesn't look quite as curly as it can with other products when I use this - I get more of a wavy look, but I like that. I like to let my hair air dry after applying the lotion and gel, and then fluff it and apply Control paste and/or a the Firmata hairspray.
I have recently started mixing this with the Brilliant Gel (a combo I saw advertised on the aveda website). That seems to be a good combo as well.

I love the Be Curly products and I have extremely curly hair. They are the best thing I have tried so far. The lotion is the one product in the line I cannot do without, however. It makes my curls very defined and shiny.

I have 3c/4a curly hair and I'm really a fan of this product. Not only does it keep my curls intact but it doesn't weigh it down so I have tons of body. It's also an efficient moisturizer. It's a bit pricey but it's so concentrated that you only need a tiny bit and your hair looks fabulous!
Update: I noticed that my hair has gotten "used to" be curly and it's not working as efficiently as it was when I first bought it.

well my review is not for your curly girls out there, nather for maybe those of you who like straight hair, but due to having what I call I natural "kink" in your hair cant achieve that look too well. And your hair is not curly enought to have real curl. I bought this on the advice of a friend, who has hair like me, saying that this stuff will just soften whatever type hair you have. And she was right. I blow dyring out my hair typically, and this stuff just softened all my frizzies and fly aways. I am using this completely as off label use, but I do think it adds to the beauty of my hair. cant explain why, but it seems healthier, easier to manage, and a nice sheen to it. doesnt make my hair curly or straight, just a nice bounce and body. completely light on your hair, doesnt weight it down. - something to consider - . will update soon with the changing of the seasons. UPDATE: sadly, after about a week of using it, my hair became more stiff than soft. and hard to manage. I cant explain it propery. But let me put it this way, I stopped using it, and just grabbed some cheap suave shampoo in my closet, its all I had and my hair was SO much softer without it. too bad, I had high hopes, but back it goes.

as someone who has genuinely kinky curly hair, i was super disappointed. on my hair, which already has it's own very tight natural curl, this product ONLY had to smooth my frizz and separate - not enhance my curls or create more curls where they weren't before. It barely tamed frizz, it minimally separated, and it did virtually nothing to my curls except weigh them down and make my crown greasy.

i'm going back to the cheap stuff - life brand (shoppers) nut and honey curl cream and serum/shine spray. less than half the price and super effective - my hair is perfectly separated, bouncy, yet with the right amount of hold and shine.

tsk tsk aveda.

Used twice on my naturally wavy/curly hair with diffuser; seems to have no effect whatsoever. Returning it to salon.

I LOVE this!!! it is my HG!!! I hate the crunchyness that gels and mousses give you so I decided to try lotions and liked them much better. I then tried all kinds of different curl lotions....biolage, curls rock, kms, all kinds and none of them are near as good as this stuff!!! Its so expensive though so after using it for a couple months, I decided to try biolage b/c its cheaper and it was a major NO-GO!!! Its too late, I'm soiled by Be Curly and can never stop using it!!...now lets just hope they don't discontinue it like everything else at Aveda!

Huge rave for this curling lotion. It is my current HG and just what I've been searching for - something to define my curls/waves and to control pouf. It claims that the wheat protein and organic aloe blend in this lotion expands when hair is wet and retracts when hair is dry to intensify curls/waves. I apply this very generously when my hair is almost soaking wet and let it air dry. Although it defines, it doesn't have much holding power, so I pair it with a mousse. It can get expensive seeing that I have to use so much in my hair, but I will definitely be repurchasing this.
Here are the ingredients: Aqueous (Water, Purified) Extracts: Linum Usitatissimum Extract, Althea Officianalis Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Phenyl Trimethicone, Behentrimonium Chloride, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Panthenol, Fragrance (Parfum), Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium 11, Glycerin, Tocopherol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Phenoxyethanol.

i LOVE this
it works perfecty on my hair - it makes it smoother and silkier and i have soft loose curls, and it's usually predictable. it gets rid of frizz but isn't too heavy and my hair doesn't feel like there's lots of stuff in it, it just feels soft and it defines my curls but doesn't give me TIGHT curls which i hate.

As a person who does not like to leave anything on my hair - this is the only styling product that I actually like and enjoy using.
It helps to define my curls without adding wehgt to the hair, and or feeling "covered" (my hair is curly when air-dried, but it's hgard to keep the curly look after brushing).
It is my ultimate hair styling product, I use after shampooing my hair, or sometimes I just wet my hair and work it in. It does work really well with the Elixir leave-in conditioner as well.
It also smells nice (though somewhat strange, some may find) - it has galbanum in it - but the scent quickly fades away (which is good for me, since I like the perufmes that I wear to be more dominant than the scent of my sahmpoo etc.)
The one thing that I do not like about this product is that if you wake up the next day after applying it, you absolutely need to wash your hair, because it feels a bit sticky and the style goes away... But than you can apply it again...
Though the price is quite high, you need to use only very tiny amounts of the product, adn that is another pro...

I didn't get on with this for my thick/coarse wavy/curly hair. It did a good job of making it softer and it smelled gorgeous, but it just didn't really do anything for curl formation or hold.

Nope. Doesn't work for me. This stuff is way too heavy and leaves my naturally curly hair flat. This gives my hair that "too much mousse" wet hair look no matter how little I apply. Yes, this stuff actually makes my hair less curly. I ended up using this to smooth back my hair when I would wear it in a ponytail.
I get better results with a few sprays of Styling Curessence. continued >>

I give this a rating of 3 rather than lower because although it doesn't work for me at all, it would probably be great for someone with truly curly hair. Mine is fine and wavy. I bought it when my stylist recommended it and it's not suitable for me. It's very rich and thick; it weighs my hair down and makes it look stringy. But for someone with curly hair, especially if it is dry or coarse, this might work very well.
