Basically the same as Revlon's Blackberry to me; I'm not sure there's anything about the product that makes it worth paying twice as much. But it's a nice formula (although it comes off easily on drinks, as does the Revlon one) and a great color so if you prefer MAC there's no reason not to buy. I only said no because I'd probably go back to Revlon instead of repurchasing.
This is the best red lipstick I ever found. Its creamy but I find it matte on application. This is so old Hollywood red. Great to get into the mood for Oscar season.
I've been dying to get my hands on this for probably three or four months now. My local MAC counter was consistently out of stock, even though it's not an uber-popular item (apparently MAC isn't renowned for their supply management abilities...), but I didn't want to order it online because I had an absolutely horrific experience with ordering lip products via a website. Needless to say, I don't buy things online if they can melt easily.
I stopped by the MAC counter earlier today and decided to pick out a new lipstick on a whim. I was thinking of maybe Viva Glam Nicki 2 or Smoked Purple (something a bit bolder), but my mom (who was with me) reminded me that I had wanted this. They finally had it, so I snatched it up as quick as I could and hurried home to test it out.
As far as reds go, this is probably a three on a scale of one to five. It's bright without being outspoken and loud. It's nice because it's orange toned without looking orange; I don't liked blue-toned reds (they turn pink on me and bring out the red in my skin), but I have issues finding yellow/orange-reds that don't look too orange. Dubonnet, as far as I am concerned, is my holy grail red. It had very subtle touches of brown, which tone it down and make it a bit more wearable. It also has some nice berry tones, which helps bring the glamour of a blue-red without bringing the issues- i.e., that horrible moment when you realize your beautiful red lipstick is now patchy hot pink. This doesn't fade to a horrible shade of 80s pink; it's just gradually dissipates to a beautiful, lovely brownish-berry, then a rosy nude, and then- poof!- it's gone.
As far as wear times go, this lasts just like any other MAC lipstick I've tried- four to six hours without fading, six to ten with some visible wear. The scent isn't assaulting, but it does linger for a little while and it seems to be particularly strong with the tube of lipstick I got... It's a bit annoying, really, but at least it doesn't smell like plastic :) I'm sure this was just an issue with mine, though- I don't see why one shade would smell more strongly than the rest.
All in all, this is absolutely going to be my go-to red. It's a lovely wearable shade when applied lightly and when layered on (most particularly with a brush) it's absolutely a showstopper- without being horrible bright or way too pink.
Let's talk about red lipsticks, or rather, how my OCD brain attempts to understand them. Everyone has probably already heard of "blue reds" "orange reds" "brown reds" etc etc, but I take a slightly different approach, more like:
and of course,
I could write pages and pages going over the various nuances of each, and perhaps I will, someday. But for the sake of reviewing, I'll try to get right to the point. Everyone has their own feelings about red lips and whether they think they can pull them off. Make-up aficionados love to say that everyone can wear red, and technically they're right, but whether you WANT to wear red or not (and to which degree of red) is ultimately up to you. I feel like red lipstick is such a personal opinion, to make a really honest review its best to offer a little bit of insight at What Red Means To You.
I wanted a Red. Maybe bordering slightly on the edge of Red! is alright. I wasn't looking for a RED at the moment because I wanted it to still be just a little subdued and restrained, something for going out at on a weeknight where I could look more dressy and sophisticated rather than "Showgirl". Don't get me wrong, Showgirl RED is beautiful and I love it, but there's a specific time and place for it, I was craving a Red that could be a little more versatile.
Dubonnet is Red. It's richness and slightly deep tone steers it towards Red! especially if layered on, but a light coat still puts it firmly in Red territory. Even used minimally, you're not going to get ...red? It's amplified finish makes it much too intense for that. I wouldn't consider this a "red" either, there is some brown, yes, but all it does is soften the point of REDness. I was concerned that a shade like this might be a "red" on me and go more brown, or,what is more likely to happen in my experience, have it go more "red" on me in the fucshia variety. I'm happy to report such is not the case, and I'm glad to confirm Dubonnet as a great Red.
Dubonnet's been part of the MAC lineup probably since the company began, for good reason. It's a brown-red that's bold but not glaring. I'm surprised by all the reviews that call it very red and the photos here too; on me (NW 25), it's definitely a rusty brown. It's a great Fall color.
When I heard from a makeup artist that Dubonnet was Gwen Stefaniís most purchased lipstick from MAC, I had to try it! It is a brick red color with brown undertones. I always receive compliments when I wear this one! Much more so than my favorite red lipstick, Russian Red. I think this one adds a certain sophistication to the wearer. It always lasts at least 6 hours before needing to be touched up. It is comfortable to wear with an amplified creme finish. I highly recommend this lipstick!
I've been in search of the perfect shade of red lipstick for many years and was so glad I found this shade after reading the reviews here. This is the perfect red for those with medium warm skin tones. It's not cool at all so it gives your skin a beautiful warmth. I've received many compliments when I've worn this lipstick. A little goes a long way so I'll probably have this tube for a while, but will definitely repurchase when I run out.
My "office" red. A blue red that has enough brown in it to make it not scream RED at the office. Wears beautifully. For more drama, I go with a different shade (and texture of red). This is just a lovely, classic red.
I don't normally wear red lipstick but this one is fantastic! If i'm feeling daring and wanting some red in my look this is where I go. The red is a deep red not an orangey fire red. It looks to me like it has a bit of a purple undertone rather than a red undertone. Its a vibrant red color but its not too crazy. I love it!
I love this lipstick. This is my first red and it is quite bright but slightly darkerin colour. It lasts a long time and does not come off easily. It is such a gorgeous colour and very pigmented and really makes the shape of your lips look great. It is beautiful.
