At first sniff, I thought this was a Monster Tuberose. But about 30 seconds in, I got the fig, mimosa and lactones. This is a very milky perfume, with intense florality at the beginning. It's quite lovely. As time went by the sandalwood and leather showed up. On skin, this phase was barely perceptible and that was irksome. On fabric, it was much stronger and lasted several hours. On skin …Read more

Fragrances - Cartier - La Panthere

The bottles are the most beautiful and creative that I've seen for a long time. They remind me of the old Laliques. Fortunately, the perfume is also very beautiful. La Panthere is a modern, light-as-air take on the old-fashioned French chypre'. I love the vintage chypre's and own many of them, but La Panthere has the advantage of being wearable in far more situations! The first …Read more

Fragrances - Serge Lutens - La Religieuse

I am biased somewhat against La Religieuse because I already own and wear L'Eau Froide. They begin in a very similar manner and seem to be olfactory paintings of a similar genre. With both, a blast of cold incense, which I love, hits the brain. It's not particularly churchy because it's so cold and intellectual. Then L'Eau Froide gradually moves into woods and musks. La …Read more

Fragrances - Serge Lutens - Gris Clair

Gris Clair is my favorite lavender and my favorite of the "cold" Serge Lutens perfumes. It starts out as a standard oriental, not too sweet, with a huge wallop of icy French lavender. A bit ho hum for Sir Serge, right? But then it morphs into hot ashes. Utterly vivid, flame and ash. So weird, so compelling, it's really more of a poem than a perfume. This is a perfume you could wear …Read more

Fragrances - Thierry Mugler - Angel Taste of Fragrance

This is my favorite version of Angel. The dark cocoa is a wonderful way to start, and even my DH, who hates Angel, loves this version. He is a chocoholic, so I guess that makes sense, but this flanker really outdoes the original. It is a little softer in effect than the original, so I think it is more wearable overall than its powerhouse mom.

Fragrances - Serge Lutens - L'Eau Froide

The first blast of L'Eau Froide is mentholated, quirky, and sharp. It's great on a hot day! Next comes a much sweeter interlude of frankincense and white musk. There's a little soapiness, and a tiny touch of aldehydes. Then it settles down into what I call "laundry musk". After about 3 hours, it's pretty well gone, but lasts much longer on fabric. In addition, the …Read more

This is a lovely, sheer, unpretentious floral. I get lily, but others swear to lilac, rose, and clean jasmine. Later I actually smell violets, like the violet/rose vibe from old-fashioned cosmetics. So...green notes, flower of choice, cosmetics. Then a soft, sweet, powdery drydown. It's very sheer and inobtrusive. I see this as the perfect office scent. It's beautiful, but will offend …Read more

This is a beautiful incense perfume. It is actually quite dry and sheer, like a whiff of frankincense that's just out of reach. It really does have a feel of mystery. Makes me think of cloister gardens at sunset. Easily worn by men or women. This could be Brother Cadfael's signature scent!

This is a lovely, lush, old-fashioned chypre' with a few modern twists. If you have been hankering after a bottle of Roja Dove's "Unspoken", but can't get hold of it, this is a close cousin. It's delightful and rich, but probably not the best choice for people who hate patchouli!
