Fragrances - Thierry Mugler - A*men Pure Havane Eau de Toilette

Let the syrupy cherry note die down and enjoy a magnificent blend of pipe tobacco, honey, vanilla, and a dash of patchouli. Reminds me of the vaunted and pricey Herod by Parfums de Marly, and of the extraordinary (and pricey) Naxos by Xerjoff. It's stronger than those, thicker, heavier in a good way. I can't believe it's selling for just under $100 and can apparently be found for …Read more

Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Mancera Lemon Line

I'm hunting the perfect lemon fragrance. I mean the kind of fragrance that's "lemon-forward." The kind of thing you could find in the 1970s at the drug store and which, for some reason, is extinct. Mancera Lemon Line is touted by dozens of reviewers as a heavy-hitting big lemon fragrance. Only Promum Roma's Acqua Viva is generally regarded as better if the lasting scent …Read more

Fragrances - CREED - Aventus Eau de Parfum

OK, it's extremely subjective, this question of what smells good. I say that because goodness knows, Aventus is a hit. Such a hit that as of this writing, Creed is about to launch a new version while continuing to sell the current version. To me, though, Aventus is a tad nauseating. It opens quietly. It took about an hour for it to develop. When it did, there was the famed pineapple, the …Read more

Fragrances - Marc Jacobs - Bang

To my nose, Bang is a misfire. But I had an agenda. I read all the comments on various sites that said it's a good substitute for Hermes's Poivre Samarcande, which is one of those frags like Eau d'Hermes that I have a morbid fascination with. Bang is to PS as pepperoni is to the peppercorn. They are nothing alike. Yes, they both have pepper, but the pepper in PS continues through …Read more

Fragrances - Hermès - Poivre Samarcande (Hermessence series)

Another offspring of Ellena's fave, Eau d'Hermes, this is a peppery animalic with some citrus. When I say animalic, here I mean sweaty, but not in quite the salacious way Eau d'Hermes is sweaty. This is more like a sweaty fat guy. In fact, imagine a sweaty fat guy coated in black pepper, but he started the day by putting on a citrusy after-shave. Still, I find it compelling--and I …Read more

Yikes! Lemon up top and a chemical smelling musk base that this house uses a lot of. Smells like Eau d'Hadrien, as another reviewer noted, but Eau d'Hadrien is soft and rich. This is like a trumpet blast. Smells cheap and brassy, like the kind of thing that should come in a gold bottle shaped like a Cadillac. Longevity for days. What is that base? It's awful. I love musk …Read more

Coffee--brewed, with lots of milk and sugar, then vanilla, and something else I can't name. After ten minutes on the skin it becomes a near exact replica of Serge Lutens's Ambre Sultan. Go figure.

Fragrances - Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Perfumes - Route du Vetiver

Picture the blade of a shovel that's just come out of the earth. Reach over and grab a fistful of the fresh damp earth and press your nose to it. Assume that you have a healthy bundle of vetiver roots in the mix. A master perfumer takes what you smell and adds, perhaps, a dose of citrus, but in a way that conceals the citrus; its identity is hidden and it is used to add a balancing hint …Read more

Fragrances - Dior - Diorella

Not much I can add but I feel compelled to write a review anyway. I was startled at how much this smells like Eau Sauvage. It really is ES, with sweet top notes. Luca Turin calls it "perfected Eau Sauvage" and I can smell why. First, it cures the fleeting longevity of ES, which tends to vanish quickly. Diorella hangs in there. And it is more complete than ES. However, the notes …Read more

Maybe definitions are the problem; at the risk of sounding like a perv, I am on the hunt for "skanky" "raunchy" fragrances. Whenever I read a review that suggests some genius has bottled the scent of a woman's unmediated natural smell--her hair, breath, skin, sweat, etc.,--I am downstairs and in a cab and on my way to Saks or Bergdorf or Alaska as if it were the cure for …Read more
