Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Parfums MDCI - FK3 Enlevement au Serail

5.0

Oct/13/2009

Enlevement au Serail (FK3) is one of the most stunning, elegant, drop-dead gorgeous scents to come down the pike in years. Huge shout-outs to Claude Marchal and Francis Kurkdjian for this beautiful creation. It is like a rich Baroque tapestry with opulent colors and textures. The opening reminds me of the original Rochas Femme, only cleaned up a bit. This is the indolic jasmine part, but …Read more

Fragrances - CHANEL - No 5 Eau Premiere

5.0

Oct/13/2009

The flanker industry has produced a mixed bag. Too often a flanker is as ridiculously bad as or is worse than the original. There are exceptions to many things in life, and Eau Premiere is one of those happy exceptions. Jacque Polge has once again proved his genius in navigating the ever demanding waters of perfumery. Eau Premiere is exceptionally wonderful. It has been many a year since …Read more

Fragrances - CHANEL - Sycomore

5.0

Oct/13/2009

Sycomore is another example of Chanel's commitment to luxury and elegance. The opening of Sycomore is one of the most interesting a vetiver fragrance can offer. It smells a bit of chocolate, roots, and salt and pepper. It morphs fairly quickly into a dry smokiness which eventually makes way for long lasting, austere woods. All in all, Sycomore is an elegant addition to the vetiver …Read more

Fragrances - Estée Lauder - Private Collection Jasmine White Moss

2.0

Oct/13/2009

Private Collection Jasmine White Moss is like Cristalle with talons. I found it very disappointing. There are two impressions I get from PCJWM, other than its being an obvious nod to Cristalle. One is the smell of acetone. You know, fingernail polish remover. The other impression I get is a good measure of helional, which here smells discordant. Helional, by the way, is the impression of …Read more

Fragrances - Robert Piguet Parfums - Fracas

Oct/13/2009

Fracas is the ultimate tuberose, the uber tuber. And it really is the ultimate in white flower fragrances, a perfection of creamy tuberose and orange flowers. Fracas is basically a very linear, very powerful fragrance. Apply sparingly, and it will last for hours and hours. It's a beautifully done fragrance, one of the real classics brought back to life as closely as possible to the …Read more

Fragrances - Miller Harris - Noix de Tubéreuse

5.0

Oct/13/2009

Miller Harris's Noix de Tubéreuse smells like a perfect combination of Fracas and L'Origan. The opening is tuberose and bubble gum, and then a few seconds later something like coconut emerges. I'm not a fan of super-sweetsie fragrances, but I don't find this stage offputting. It's fun, interesting, short lived and totally inoffensive. What emerges in the middle notes …Read more

Fragrances - Jean Patou - Normandie

5.0

Jul/30/2008

Normandie was originally launched in 1935 to commemorate the crossing of the Atlantic by the ship of the same name. When I first tried this fragrance, I was immediately taken by Normandie's beauty and simple versatility. Sadly, it has been discontinued; there are still a few bottles online here and there.

Normandie's drydown has an ambery, clean smell to it. It …

Fragrances - Estée Lauder - Sensuous

3.0

Everything old is new again. Cue Sensuous. It is very close in construction to the now defunct Ferre 20. In 1998, to celebrate 20 years in design, Gianfranco Ferre released Ferre 20, a vanillic-woodsy scent for which the great Pierre Dinand designed a gold ingot style bottle topped by a cylindrical silver cap. One of the great things about Ferre 20 was that it thumbed its nose at all the …Read more

Fragrances - Caron Paris - Violette Precieuse - 2006 Reissue

2.0
Created with Sketch.

Apr/22/2008

This new and third iteration of Caron's Violette Precieuse begins as a lovely and softly soapy little violet. All prim and proper with its white gloves and lace hanky. Then it morphs into a powdery colossal mess. How disappointing. It smells like cheap hairspray at this point. Then the drydown begins and if you like Chanel's No 18, then the drydown is worth waiting for. VP has the …Read more

Fragrances - Bond No.9 - Park Avenue

1.0
Created with Sketch.

Apr/22/2008

One of my least favorite smells is when fabric holds cooking odors, especially fried cooking odors. Know what I mean? Park Avenue smells like a violet that has absorbed the smell of fried chicken grease. I couldn't believe my nose when I smelled this stuff. Violet + the smell of fried chicken grease that has wound its way all through the house. This is the polar opposite of what I …Read more
