Blush - Inglot Cosmetics - Blush #20

4.0
Created with Sketch.

I've got a serious soft spot for pinky-mauve blushes, and have amassed quite a few. Like most color-specific fixations, they're largely differentiated by nuance---in texture, in tone, in pigmentation---but they all flatter, and in a roughly similar fashion. Inglot #20 is so far the favorite of the bunch.

The measure of a blush that flatters, if I may define it, is one that …

Blush - BECCA - Cream blush in Wild Orchid

5.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/30/2014

Becca Wild Orchid has been my favorite (and at one time my only) blush for many years. At first glance it is one of many cool pinks on the market, set apart by a greyed mauve undertone that makes it seem dull and faded next to a vivid magenta like NARS Desire. However insipid it may appear in the pan, little bit of mauve works magic on my N15 skintone. It does what the right shade of blush ought …Read more

Blush - Face Stockholm - Blush - Crush

3.0

Jul/28/2014

One of the reasons why I've amassed so many pinky-mauve blushes is because of one particular color: Becca Wild Orchid, a product I've used faithfully (and almost exclusively) since 2005, when the inevitable discontinuation hit. I met, as anyone who's ever been in search of a 'true' dupe can attest, with a multiplicity of shades within the same color family, but nothing …Read more

Blush - Rouge Bunny Rouge - Original Skin Blush-For Love of Roses in Gracilis

5.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/28/2014

Of all my pinky-mauve blushes, Rouge Bunny Rouge rises head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to texture: almost creamy in its softness, yet without kicking up any dust, with a subtle sheen. While I think this is shown to better advantage with the brighter, more pigmented colors, as a nude blush Gracilis registers as healthy, glowing skin rather than makeup, because of how beautifully …Read more

Blush - Laura Mercier - Second Skin Cheek Color - Soft Iris

4.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/28/2014

In my collection of pinky-mauve blushes, Soft Iris is by far the greyest, a true dusty mauve with less emphasis on pink, quite unusual. Thanks to the grey, it has a subtle sculpting effect on my not-quite-pale skintone if taken along the cheekbone, with a brighter pink positioned on top, an understated alternative to the conventional taupe contour if that is too much warmth for you. Pigmentation …Read more

Blush - Boots - No7 Natural Blush Cheek Colour 10 Soft Damson

2.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/28/2014

If you're in the market for a pinky-mauve blush, because most pinks and corals go too ruddy, this is a cheap and cheerful option. On my N15, mixed peachy-warm and cool-olive undertones, Soft Damson wears as a faint matte rose, slightly greyed down. The quality is unfortunately on par with other drugstore blushes—underpigmented and grainy in texture—but with a good brush it's …Read more

Gels/ Soaps - Avene - XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil

5.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/25/2014

Contrary to the name, this is a mild, low-lathering cleansing fluid for face and body. It bears no resemblance to a conventional cleansing oil, and indeed, fares rather poorly at makeup removal. I can only surmise that Avene meant a shower oil like Eucerin's.

Though it lathers softly and rinses clean, it is very gentle. It's rare that a detergent-based cleanser does not …

Concealers - SHISEIDO - Sheer Eye Zone Corrector

3.0
Created with Sketch.

Jul/22/2014

UPDATE: After a few months of use, I've come to the conclusion this is not suited for skin as dry and mine. Though this is mitigated by prepping the skin with eye cream, it still tends to look dry and therefore emphasizes any tendency towards cakiness. All concealers cake, but I'd rather the texture work with me than against me. Ultimately, it's not the best fit for my needs; this …Read more

Gels/ Soaps - Unlisted Brand - Olivella - All Natural Virgin Olive Oil soap - Fragrance Free

4.0
Created with Sketch.

Oct/29/2013

Olivella is a well made basic soap, one of the nicest among those commonly available at American drugstores and supermarkets. Its simplicity is reminiscent of other olive oil soaps like savon de marseille. In the bath, Olivella softens into a creamy jelly, a soft and non-stripping low lather, which worried me initially, thinking that it'd melt away within a few weeks, but it lasts a fairly …Read more

Lip Treatments - Unlisted Brand - Hurraw! Night Treatment Lip Balm Blue Chamomile Vanilla

3.0
Created with Sketch.

Oct/26/2013

In spite of its name, Hurraw! Night Treatment Lip Balm is more of a daytime chapstick. If you're looking for a basic lip balm for everyday, it's a nice option, with some beautiful oils. The slim, elliptical tube is pleasing to the eye, feels silky-smooth without greasiness or waxiness, and for the nose, a vanillic cocoa butter scent (mine has no hint of chamomile's distinct …Read more
