Fragrances - REVLON - Charlie Eau de Toilette

Charlie (1973) is a cheerful, accessible soapy green floral chypre for the masses. In the same vein as Norell, Chanel No 19, Ivoire, and Fidji— but a bit brighter & simpler. This was worn (heavily!) and loved by many women in my family. I loved smelling it in the air as a kid, as it seemed sophisticated and exciting with its brisk greenness. And I associated it with things I wasn’t allowed to …Read more

Lipstick - wet n wild - Megalast Liquid Catsuit High-Shine Lipstick

This was an impulse buy while I was stocking up on powder and eyeliner at Walgreens. I've been looking for a pale pink lip gloss that doesn't make me look washed-out and ill (most are too frosty and/or cool-toned) and the shade Peach Stole My Look seemed perfect. It is!

I highly recommend this shade if you have yellow undertones and find that most "nude" lip glosses …

Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Evyan White Shoulders Eau de Cologne

Glorious! The original Flowerbomb. (Seriously, that would be a much better name for it) 😊

I think the current version (EA Fragrances) is *okay* and will give you a diminished, bare-bones idea of what White Shoulders used to be in all its glory. But, the original version by Evyan is readily available all over eBay and has held up remarkably well over time. I have bottles from the 1960s …

Fragrances - Estée Lauder - White Linen Eau de Parfum

An unexpected love that took a few tries to develop! White Linen (1978) is an early Sophia Grojsman creation for Estée Lauder that is “clean” in the same way that many aldehydic classics (Chanel 5, Chanel 22, White Diamonds) tend to be— reminiscent of fine hotel soaps and starched sheets, but with a touch of the human about them too (thanks to oak moss, civet, and musk).

White Linen is …

Sunscreen - Neutrogena - Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock spf 70

5.0

This is a great facial sunscreen for oily skin! Its light texture and ease of use leaves me with no excuses for not using a daily sunscreen. Goes on very thin and watery, and quickly dries to a matte, primer-like finish. There is absolutely no greasiness or whitish cast to the skin after using this; it’s totally invisible once blended into skin. There is a mild fragrance that goes away quickly— …Read more

Fragrances - Marilyn Miglin - Pheromone

5.0

Pheromone is hard for me to review objectively. My beloved feminist grandmother wore it, my mom wears it, I wear it. Marilyn Miglin is based in Chicago, as is my family— and as a kid I got dragged along to her cosmetics outlet store, where even I fell under the thrall of Marilyn’s neon eyeshadows and frosty, perfumed lipsticks. My favorite product was the Pheromone Liquid Gold lotion, which left …Read more

BB Cream - Unlisted Brand - Hydroxatone Anti-Aging BB Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 40

I thought I’d review this because it’s currently being sold in twin packs for $20 at Costco and $28 on Amazon. I got mine at Costco.

I do like many things about this product, but let’s get one thing straight: this is NOT a “universal” shade of BB cream! It is a wam (yellow/orange toned) medium beige. It’s sheer, so you can get away with wearing it if you’re a couple of shades …

Cleansers - Palmer's - Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil

Finances forced me to ditch my beloved Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm. I found out about Palmer’s cleansing oil from a Makeupalley message board... and it’ll do nicely! (Palmers: $10 for a 6-oz bottle; Clinique: $30 for a 4-oz jar).

The trick to dissolving makeup well is to apply a couple of pumps of the oil to a DRY face with DRY hands, massage in throughly until makeup is …

Stick - Maybelline New York - Fit Me Shine-Free Foundation Stick

I’m 48 but have combination skin that still gets oily in summer, so I need a foundation that won’t settle into lines, but also isn’t too greasy. I really like the Fit Me stick! It’s easy to blend— I just swipe on cheeks, chin, and forehead, blend wrh my fingers, and then use more under my eyes as concealer and blend that.

I use Classic Ivory and it’s a perfect match for my yellow …

Fragrances - Oscar de la Renta - Esprit de Oscar Eau de Parfum

5.0

I initially wrote a negative review on this one, based on the first wearing (wrist only). Then I decided to be brave and spray it 4x on my neck and under my shirt, and to live with it for 12 hours before re-reviewing. Guess what? I LOVE it!

I think the initial dislike was because Esprit D’Oscar wasn’t at all what I was expecting. I’ve worn the original Oscar for years and thought for …
