Fragrances - GUERLAIN - Idylle

4.0

Guerlain's ad copy calls Idylle a "mist of flowers," and that is true. The first burst from the bottle is a rush of blossoms - rose, lily of the valley, lilac, freesia. I couldn't help but smile. After some time, the rose and LOTV are the most prominent, and what a lovely duet they sing! All of this is set against a background of musk and a dollop of patchouli. Some have …Read more

I have been thinking about fragrances that fit the (stereotypical) image of old Vienna: The waltzes of Johann Strauss II, balls at the Hofburg, Wienerschnizel, whipped cream in your coffee. Amouage Lyric Woman is the feminine fragrance that fits this image for me, but what about the men? For them, there's nothing better than this fragrance that really does come from Vienna: Knize Ten …Read more

Fragrances - Amouage - Lyric Woman

I have been searching for a fragrance that conjures up a stereotypical vision of Old Vienna: Balls at the Hofburg, Schoenbrunn palace, the waltzes of Johann Strauss II, and whipped cream in your coffee. Amouage Lyric Woman just about does it, with its deep red roses and its yummy vanilla cream and spice notes. Like another favorite of mine, Parfums de Nicolai Sacrebleu, it stands directly at the …Read more

Fragrances - LUSH - B Never too Busy to Be Beautiful-B Scent

5.0

Jul/01/2009

B Scent is, simply put, delicious. I think of it as my Greek grandmother's kitchen in summer. It opens on a huge lemon note, followed by fennel. See, perfume companies? Gourmand scents don't have to smell like canned fruit and cake frosting. They can also be savory! There are hints of rose and jasmine in there, too. It's remarkably long-lasting for a citrus scent. By far, it's …Read more

I love perfumes that abstractly recreate pastries. I'm not talking about literalist gourmands like Pink Sugar (cotton candy!) or Britney Spears Fantasy (cupcakes!), but rather the citrus-vanilla creme brulee that is Shalimar and the creamy anise-flavored macaron (not the big, coarse coconut things but the delicate little ganache-filled sandwich cookies) that is L'Heure Bleue. Vero …Read more

Fragrances - GUERLAIN - Mitsouko Eau de Parfum

5.0
Created with Sketch.

Jun/14/2009

I am probably the only person on the planet who likes New Mitsouko (reformulated to replace the oakmoss with treemoss) better than the old stuff. Prior to its reformulation, I found Mitsouko bitter and musty, resembling nothing so much as rotting peaches locked in an old spice cabinet. Now it smells like golden, velvety peach skin, marinated in spices. And for those of you who would screech and …Read more

Fragrances - Frederic Malle - Une Rose

5.0
Created with Sketch.

Jun/09/2009

So, you think you hate rose scents. You think they're all cliched, too pink, too old, too reminiscent of grandma's potpurri. Well, you're in for a surprise here. Une Rose is a crimson rose from which the thorns have not been pruned away. It is deep and rich. And it incorporates gourmand touches that are miles away from the usual sweet fruits and vanillas that largely make up that …Read more

Fragrances - Cacharel - Anais Anais

Don't let the pretty little florals fool you! Underneath the bright muguet, lily, and rose, Anais Anais has a surprising amount of depth. The amber-leather-oakmoss (yes, there is still real oakmoss in this one) base lingers for hours. This perfume isn't just about a pretty girl in a frilly hat and Laura Ashley dress sitting in a garden. This girl also has a PhD in English Literature …Read more

Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Carthusia I Profumi - Fiori di Capri

I thought that Fiori di Capri would be perfect for me. Carnation? Lily of the valley? Oak? Where do I sign up? But alas, it was not to be. It starts off carnationy, but dries down to a generic blend of sweet, warm nothingness. I have smelled similar things a thousand times over the years, and yet I can't compare this to anything. Maybe Roma? No, that was way better than this. Mariella …Read more

Lipstick - Lipstick Queen - Oxymoron

4.0

May/08/2009

I just bought this in Minor Crisis and I am very happy with it! This is an ideal product for achieving the Jane-Austen-heroine look: Gently rose-tinted cheeks and lips. The color, a darkish rose pink, is perfect for my deep, coolish complexion. The texture really is a matte gloss! It doesn't slide off the lips or become sticky like regular glosses can, and it's not drying and cakey the …Read more
