Fragrances - GUERLAIN - Samsara

This review is for the extrait, which I was lucky to score on eBay. I had avoided Samsara for years despite being a Guerlain collector (in a minor way, you understand). And I fully admit it: it was because I am a terrible snob. Anything post-1980 I regard with suspicion, especially if it's a big seller. I also turn my nose up at Guerlain's recent foray into high-end commercialism and …Read more

Fragrances - GUERLAIN - Gourmand Coquin

Jul/18/2017

An interesting exercise by Guerlain in the gourmand trend set by Thierry Mugler's Angel. I had expected this to be a little more in the grand Guerlain manner, but don't detect a great deal of the Guerlinade base in here (the clearest recent iteration of that style by Guerlain is surely the wonderful 180 ans de Creations). Gourmand Coquin opens with a big blast of rum-soaked fruits that …Read more

Gels/ Soaps - trilogy - Botanical Body Wash

This is lovely. It has a beautiful light herbal/floral fragrance which is perfectly unisex. Many 'naturally fragranced products smell generic or samey to me - this is very subtle. It is moisturising too, and doesn't seem to strip the skin. Lathers up well and does the job. I love that it comes in a larger sized bottle. I got it at a discount, which is good because it is a trifle spendy.

Fragrances - CHANTECAILLE - Frangipane EDP

Jul/13/2016

Chantecaille Frangipane deserves more love, I think.( It got a pretty snide review in Perfumes: The Guide, whereas Tommy Girl gets five stars? Mystifying). As many have said, it is a basic vanilla/tropical flower combo, but it's the quality of the materials in this pefume that make it shine. It is sweet, but not too sweet, the sugar balanced by a subtle aquatic/ozone note. This would …Read more

Fragrances - Lorenzo Villoresi - Teint de Neige Eau de Toilette

5.0

Superbly blended. This is considered Villoresi's masterpiece, and for a reason. It's the contrast/balance between the edible and non-edible elements in this scent that make it so tantalizing. As a reviewer has accurately pointed out below, a rich vanilla note anchors this scent. I think Luca Turin described Kenzo's 'Amour' as a fascinating interplay between 'eat …Read more

Gels/ Soaps - REN Clean Skincare - Moroccan Rose Otto Shower Wash

4.0

Mar/02/2016

I find this doesn't quite live up to the hype, although it is undoubtedly a very nice rose-scented body wash with reasonably 'natural' ingredients. (Anytime I see a company claiming to be 'natural' I sniff greenwashing, but I'm an old cynic). It has a slightly loose slippery consistency but lathers up quite well on a bath lily and fills the shower with a gorgeous …Read more

Fragrances - L'Artisan Parfumeur - Drole de Rose

Jan/25/2016

This rose is on the opposite of the spectrum from the ironically titled 'Portrait of a Lady'. I can't help thinking Frederic Malle was having a giggle with that one, because it is the embodiment of what I would call 'butch rose'. This, on the other hand, is all candyfloss, petticoats, lipstick, frou frou and girlitude. It's immensely pretty, and as others have …Read more

Deodorants - No Brand (DIY or homemade) - Baking Soda & Corn Starch

5.0

Jul/13/2015

A fantastic deodorant. I first tried this because of the rave reviews on Makeupalley, and I'm so glad I did. I have searched for years for an effective, non-irritating 'natural' deodorant and it looks like I've finally found it.

The proportions can vary, but I've been using two parts baking soda and organic cornstarch to one part coconut oil. Mix thoroughly …

Treatments (Face) - Unlisted Brand - Kosmea Rose Hip Oil

I don't use this brand so this is more of a generic review for the product. I do use an organic brand which has a deep colour and a distinctive nutty smell (which is to be expected and is not unpleasant).

This is an excellent all-round healing and moisturizing oil. It is very soothing to minor skin irritations and in my experience clears up minor irritations in short order …

Screaming scrubber. Eau de furniture polish. An industrial accident in a plastics factory. Sure-fire migraine trigger. Should be marketed as an emetic by a major drug company. Possibly the worst perfume ever made, and certainly the biggest misnomer. Pass the sick bag.
