Pressed Powders - Laura Mercier - Pressed Setting Powder - Translucent

This and LM's foundation primer are two of the brand's best sellers that I have put off buying for years, which is strange for an LM loyalist. But when I finally caved and got the primer, I became an instant convert. The story with the pressed powder, however, is less of a fairy tale. I neglected it for months, not out of disappointment, but because I believed I didn't need it. …Read more

Shampoo - Klorane - Shampoo with Peony

I am shocked by my strong dislike for this shampoo. Beautiful packaging usually wins some points from me, but not this time. It doesn't bubble up at all, and the lack thereof doesn't seem to produce any perceptible benefits to my hair. For the same price, I'd rather get Bumble & Bumble or Fresh.

Lipstick - Yves Saint Laurent - ROUGE PUR COUTURE Lipstick Collection

2.0

May/20/2013

Not sure what is so special about this formula because I find it to be completely mundane. Therefore, outrageously expensive. Doesn't apply evenly and calls attention to the flakes when your lips are dry. After using Suqqu, no other lipstick feels as moisturizing and effortless, but Suqqu is in the top echelon by itself. It is probably more fair to compare YSL to, say, Burberry or …Read more

Lip Treatments - Rosebud Perfume Co. - Strawberry Lip Balm

It has a storied heritage. It tastes like strawberry. It is budget-friendly. It now comes in sanitary tube form. I really, really wanted to like it, but its weak hydrating properties and constant need for reapplication left me underwhelmed.

Moisturizers - Unlisted Brand - The One - hydrant intensive hydrating concentrate

Hooray for Watson's gift baskets, without which I would not have been introduced to The One, a terrific, no-nonsense skincare brand developed by a Taiwanese biotech company. The company has a licensing deal with Uriage, which speaks for its technological reputation, but the truth is I like their own products a lot more than the ones they make for Uriage. Retailing for US$18 (30ml), this …Read more

Cleansers - Curél - Gel Makeup Remover

May/20/2013

Not to be a pain, but the official name for this product, as printed on the tube container, is "makeup cleansing gel," though the MUA title "gel makeup remover" is an accurate descriptor. One of Curel's most popular products, it is developed for sensitive skin and praised for being incredibly gentle. And gentle it is--it can effectively remove eye makeup and foundation …Read more

Skincare - Face - Avene - Thermal Spring Water

I know sprays are often used as toners or makeup setters but this one is strictly special occasions-only for me. I don't need it often, but for a few short weeks when spring accelerates into summer, my skin gets itchy and it is time to give my usual regimen a rest. During seasonal transitions I use nothing but this and an ointment from my dermatologist at night. A thorough spray after the …Read more

Lipstick - Burberry - #28 Devon Sunset

This shows up more as fuchsia than coral on me, which is a huge letdown. On many blog swatches this looks like a shimmery peach, which is beautiful, but in reality the orange has all but disappeared. Instead, I got a cool tone and a hint of neon. Quite similar to the YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick #23 Corail Poetique, but is slightly pinker. Aside from the color, the product is exquisite to …Read more

Lip Treatments - Unlisted Brand - Hanaka - Chu Chu Lip Scrub (strawberry & cotton candy)

MUAers agreed with me when I said Sara Happ's lip scrubs, however cute and tempting, are overrated. But I didn't mean lip exfoliators in general are overrated. Quite the opposite. On average lips need a good scrubbing more often than face, and that seems to be true regardless of weather. But I have come across no facial exfoliant, including the top-of-the-line kind, that works on …Read more
