If I had a time machine, I would go back to the 90s-early 2000s and buy every perfume in the department store. I don't know if the formulas get cheaper or I get older and old-fashioned things appeal to me, but I've long given up sniffing the new releases. My old faves have been reformulated, and I stopped buying them. Without the time machine I have two options: eBay and vintage goods …Read more

Fragrances - Ormonde Jayne - Frangipani Absolute

Ormonde Jayne fragrances smell like department store fragrances should smell, and I mean this in the best possible way. Ormonde Jayne is definitely my favorite house in a draw with Serge Lutens. I think I prefer OJ for summer, and SL for winter. OJ fragrances are not unique or shocking (not even Ormonde Woman), you won't find rubber, pavement, manure or circus elephant among the notes. Some …Read more

Fragrances - Serge Lutens - Daim Blond

Feb/05/2016

It's always interesting for me how others describe a fragrance. There are some that evoke certain places (countries, vacations or nature), others certain stories or characters from films, etc. And there are those, like Daim Blond that represent a certain type of woman. Daim Blond is beautiful and successful, and it's always easy for her to achieve her goals. She's lucky, we could …Read more

Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Parfum d Empire Cuir Ottoman

Feb/05/2016

Cuir Ottoman has quite a flowery start (iris, jasmine and labdanum), but it soon becomes a straight-up leather. It's smokey and dark, the black/dark brown leather of furniture or bags. It's a unisex fragrance, but for me it's rather masculine when it reaches the dry down.

Fragrance - Dior - Dior Homme

Feb/01/2016

This could easily be called Dior Cookies and marketed in a pale lilac bottle for women. First I get iris + cocoa powder. The iris is very nice, not cold as in a lot of other cases, but the cocoa powder has a suffocating effect on me. It's like I bent over a huge pile of cocoa powder, slapped my hands in it, and the powder filled my nostrils and didn't let me breathe. It's very …Read more

Fragrances - Amouage - perfumes

Amouage perfumes have a lot in common, so I was happy to see that Amouage can be reviewed as a brand. It's definitely not my favorite house, but it has a lot of good offerings, and the concept it mostly remains true to is an interesting one that certainly gives food for thought.
Amouage is marketed as a luxurious (moreover, royal) brand and the products do stand the test of quality. The …

Fragrances - Serge Lutens - Ambre Sultan

Jan/29/2016

Ambre Sultan is one of my favorite perfumes this winter. There is a huge difference between the initial smell and the dry down, so if you find the beginning too herbal or medicinal, don't rush to scrub it off, try to wait a bit. It soon becomes a well-composed, sweet, vanillic amber, much easier to like. I personally love the herbal beginning, and am sad that it goes to the background so …Read more

Fragrances - Unlisted Brand - Parfum d'Empire Ambre Russe

Jan/29/2016

Parfum d'Empire is an homage to Tsarist Russia. It has a classical French perfume base plus notes of vodka, champagne, tea, tobacco (to symbolize the lifestyle) and incense (to symbolize the spiritualism). It sounds stereotypical, but actually is fun and most of the time quite pleasant for the nose.
The perfume starts with a blast of alcohol, vodka and champagne, but the power of the …

Bronzers - CHANEL - Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base

This is a bronzing base, not a proper bronzer, and I think it is the best choice for those who (like me) are not very skillful or trained at make-up and are searching for something natural-looking. I've bought numerous bronzers during the years that I hardly ever used, because I couldn't use them properly. They never looked good on me because I couldn't blend them in. I know I …Read more

Mascara - Estée Lauder - Sumptuous BoldVolume Lifting Mascara

I've found this mascara totally mediocre, and as there are much better choices in this price category, I gave a definite NO for repurchase. It's nicely pigmented, but it clumps and flakes a bit. Nothing horroristic or panda-like, but enough to make you unhappy about this product and put it in the drawer and forget about it.
