If I didn't know any better, I would call Callanetics some kind of weird black magic. I mean, I still can't find an explanation as to how it works and works so fast too. I've tried all kinds of exercises. Traditional weights and cardio, kickboxing, pilates, barre, ballet, circuit training, etc. You get the idea. I enjoy weights very much, but somehow it doesn't get me the results that Callanetics does. I only discovered it last year when I stumbled upon it by accident on Amazon. Hardly anyone had a bad word to say about it. In fact, most people were raving about how fast and effective it is. I couldn't have come across it at a better time. I didn't have access to a gym at that time and was itching to get fit. My weight wasn't an issue at all. I'm 5' 6 and weigh about 130 lbs consistently. I looked fine in flattering clothing. But underneath I had all the problems a skinny fat person does. Love handles galore, shapeless arms and legs, underarm fat, etc. I started this program like I do everything, with great zeal...initially. I did it 5-6 days a week faithfully. I followed the original dvd a few times and by then I'd memorized it. After that, I put on my wireless headphones and did the program while listening to music. Once you've memorized it, it takes about 40 minutes to complete. I'm not going to comment on the music or the clothing, since I only watched it a few times. It doesn't effect the effectiveness of the program. I barely broke a sweat the first time, but I was sore all over the next day. In about 3 weeks, I couldn't believe the difference it made. I lost inches everywhere, though my weight remained the same. I encourage everyone to take some before/after photos. I did and I could clearly see that my midsection was flatter and sucked in. My arms looked daintier and my legs began to take on a nice shape. I should also mention that I was doing the arms section of Tracy Anderson's Mat workout 3 - 4 times a week since Callanetics doesn't focus on arms too much. TA's arm workout looks silly, but I truly believe it works. Anyway, after the first month, I started slacking off and was doing Callanetics about 3 times a week. In the end, I did it for a total of 5 months and the results only got better. After that life happened and I stopped exercising completely for a while. Now I've pulled it out again a year later, looking to recreate the magic. I can tell you that it's not an exciting workout. It works, and works very well, IF you do it consistently. I look forward to getting back in shape again.

Well well thanks to Ms Pinckney!I started doing Callanetics again (the basic 10years 10 hours) on DVD.First of all yes it is outdated, the outfits, the hair, the make up and omg that poor man in the socks I'm the only one who is trying not to laugh every time I see him. SorrynotosrryBut let me tell you. I've been going to thr gym since '014 4-6 times a week, and this January I got into powerlifting.Of course I need to stretch a lot, I get tight really easy, my back, my legs, hips etc not to mention I strained my lower back once and it's not a joke feeling and moving your body around so stiff and robot-like like your grandma. Callanetics is wonderful. Like a magic potion to my tight muscles and joints!Some of you already said it before me! Totally agree with sweetbabylace who wrote down exactly my feelings:I feel not so sore I'm loose and relaxed like a ragdoll! It's therapeutic like it calms my nerves and sends me to a chill place. Love it! Fave parts:Warm up for arms, under arm tightener - i dunno how but sculpts your arms, my muscles seem to peak through more than before, and I'm not even shreddedThe hip and behind section is superb it pumps up your ass and I seem like to retain less water on my hamstring which has always been a problem area. #preciouspeach lolStomach - I hate weighted stomach excercises bc they add a bulk and bulky waistline never looked good. So to keep waist small but abs still sculpted these are awesome.And hopefully it will help me with my lifts! Will report back;)

My goodness, I just found out that MA has reviews of products other that cosmetics! (My idea of a good cosmetic is a cheap one [and one with no animal testing too, btw], as I just cannot bring myself to spend that kind of money [and I am by no means poor] on a cosmetic.)This program, my friends, is the ultimate in quickly shaping up and staying in shape, no matter what shape you are in. The workout might not be terribly fun, but it works, and it works quickly!If you are in a situation where you can afford a little time to work out, please do invest in either a book or a dvd. You will be so happy that you did. This system is brilliant!

The first few times I tried callanetics, I didn't like it. Now, I'm in love with it!!! I have completed a total of 16 hours over the past 2 months. I am in my early 30s and in overall great shape. However, I had a major hip flexor injury from 2 years ago that has caused lower back strain, chronic hip flexor tightness and leg muscle tightness/strain. I also seem to constantly have a stiff neck. ALL OF THESE THINGS ARE IMPROVING RADIDLY WITH CALLANETICS!My neck feels loose and relaxed, my shoulders are much less stiff and my leg/hip area from my injury is REALLY loosening up and is much less sore. I've already noticed some butt lifting/shaping, my calves seems a little more trim and feminine and I notice a cinching in the waist already. This is after only 16 hours stretched out over a 2 month period. I have not been very consistent with it until the last 2 weeks! Most people begin to see serious results after the first 20 hours, so I can't wait! Again, I don't have a lot of problem areas, but definitely have some adjustments I look forward to seeing. The therapeutic aspects alone are worth it.CALLANETICS HAS ALREADY HELPED ME MORE THAN ANY PT OR CHIRO HAS EVER HELPED!

Okay, this just popped up on the homepage and I HAD to comment. My friends mom had this old VHS lying around her house when we were younger and we used to work out using it together - HILARIOUS. It's a super vigorous workout...and Callan is basically Bea Arthur in spandex, and when she describes turning your butt into a "TIGHT SWEET PEACH" hahahaha. amazing.

This is a general review for the Callanetics (Book & DVD) exercise program. Given all the 80s revival I thought it was appropriate to post a review of my favourite form of exercise (I hear Jane Fonda is bringing out a new DVD!) that I have been doing off and on for over two decades. First let me begin by saying that this program is neither exciting nor easy to master, what is however, is extremely effective.I have tried many forms of exercise to varying degrees of commitment (gym,running,Pilates mat based & reformer based, Yoga),but this is the only one I always come back to.The beauty of this program is that it works really fast , is cheap; all you need is a secondhand book & DVD, and you can do this anywhere the only equipment you need is a chair and maybe a towel. When I first tried this back in the 80s I found it really hard to do as I hadn't the Video, when I used both the book & Video I finally understood what I was supposed to be doing.If you have done Pilates before you may find this a little easier to do, though they are quite different techniques but they both emphasise the core, and utilise slow ,tiny repetitions that work the muscles deeply.I much prefer this to Pilates even though I used to have private instructors (some members of the Spanish Royal Family, and the Barcelona FC captain both used my studio) because I found Pilates took a fair bit longer to show results than Callanetics, though I think Pilates is better therapeutically for the back and other issues, also there were tonnes of pilates moves and the Callanetics program has far fewer. As I previously mentioned it can be a bit tricky to master, but if you really take it seriously the benefits are truly impressive.This exercise regime is not cardiovascular but if done correctly you look as though you've lost weight, and indeed some heavier people report losing weight as a consequence but that clearly is down to personal metabolics. I have always been slim around a size zero , maybe a 2 now that I'm older and have had two kids. But even though I am naturally of small build I do have a tendancy to have bulky upper arms and cankles and a flat butt (perhaps to do with my Asian genes!) I haven't exercised regularly in a year or so, but even after a couple of sessions I can see and feel the difference. My posture is better, I feel really limber and energised and my body is more toned, my clothes also are a bit looser.I aim to do two hours a week because anything more is unrealistic for me as I am horribly lazy and the kids make it hard to do stuff during the day- can't do this in the evening as it makes me too alert.When done regularly it really tightens and lengthens the body and I feel much happier about wearing shorts and bathing costumes as it really gives you a streamlined shape, the best thing is that it gives me an awesome behind- high, round and firm! In all, if you are prepared to do 2-3 hourly sessions a week you can have a great figure regardless of size. Not only do I feel great afterwards, I find that my lung capacity/breathing improves and I can 'sing better' when I go to Karaoke as I can hold notes for longer. I've read that athletes sometimes to the program as a warm up . Oh, and the founder of this program Callan asserts that doing this regularly will have a pronounced effect on libido, I have to say I concur......Edit: Ha, ha just read the other review, so true ! the footage is beyond dated, actually it is super cheesy, but don't let the porn-ish muzak and bad styling put you off, it really works. Some people also find Callan (the instructor) really annoying but all I can say , she was pretty old then and her body was amazing ;strong, lean and as agile as a dancer I would post photos if I knew how .Also, if you check out the book/DVD you can see an elderly lady (Midge) Callan's Mum who must have been in her 70s or 80s at the time of this video and her body is really elegant. Also forgot to mention the book is out of print now but you can easilly find it on ebay/Amazon and DVD's are fairly easy to find. There are some Callanetics studios around but not that many, I guess because it is so unfashionable but it still has legions of loyal fans read the reviews on Amazon for more info.Despite the naffness of this program (my husband finds it hysterical , so I can only exercise if he's out) it is worth persevering with.
