Usually when a perfume does a flanker, we know what to expect to some degree of accuracy. Call it a sport or a blue and we can expect a citrus, marine or aquatic note, call it noir and here comes the patchouli truck, but what do you do to capture the spirit of a fragrance, especially one that comes out swinging damn sexy like Joan Crawford with a baseball bat on date night. Well, the House of Mollinard stole not only the spirit, but the very soul of Habanita and handed it back to us in a bottle so vanity worthy that it begs attention. I could lie and say she is just like Habanita but with a fresh, citrus opening like other reviewers, but I won’t insult Habanita L'Esprit that way. Unlike Christina Crawford this child shares a real DNA with her mother that is undeniable, but... you can snuggle her, nuzzle her, obsess over her creamy delicious tummy and bask in the warm, sparkling mimosa sun with her while the delicate musk, dry oakmoss and patchouli base keep your nose buried and heart light. If a warm Summer breeze blows by L’ Esprit you will chase her hard but if you catch her, prepare to fall in love as I have. Don’t like Habinita in any form, that’s totally fine by me, I don’t want it to become a “Flowerbomb”, especially when it takes some real doodads to wear it. As a TV/ film union makeup artist and beauty editor I covet the glamour and unapologetically feminine sirens of yesterday and the loss of the sex bomb perfumes that enveloped them. Thank God Habanita is still around in some form and that this is still dangling from it's umbilical cord. Living close to Joan’s tomb I visit, especially on her Birthday May 10th and yes, I make sure I wear one of her favorites when I go, she deserves it! I think she would love this version but only for around the house, the only place where she could really be herself. xx

Wow. I am on a Parisian kick and after recently falling in love with Molinard's Habanita and Patchouli, I decided to try Habanita L'esprit, and there's no looking back! This is a newer twist on the historic Habanita, and the homage comes through in this scent. It's ethereal and potent at once, slightly reminiscent of Donna Karan's Cashmere Mist in its powderiness, and Kenzo's Amour Florale with its airy and spicy musk combined with sweet and earthy resins. The notes are: musk, French labdanum, benzoin, heliotrope, nutmeg, lemon, patchouli, mimosa, rose, vetiver, and jasmine. This is soft, but still a strong force to be reckoned with, and is a major departure from the patchouli/incense scents I typically go for. There is more flowery/sweetness, but is such an indescribable matrix! It's fun to have something different than everything else in the department stores! This might not be a great "wear to work" perfume, but perfect for a night out on the town!

I'd been thinking about this one for years. Why did I wait so long? I picked it up for a song on ebay this past week, and am loving this. It's reminiscent of several things I have adored in a scent -- the refined air of Shalimar, the strange florals of L'Heure Bleue, the pinch of "naughty" (think blast-from-the-past Ciara perfume & sneaking a forbidden cigarette)... I typically wear patchouli, and while Habanita contains it, along with sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss and cedar, these spicy/smoky notes temper the sweet and powdery floral/vanilla seamlessly. Molinard's beautiful plush, velvety base that their line is famous for pulls this together into something special with remarkable staying power and has already drawn compliments from my husband and daughter. This is the black-eyeliner, messy 'do, brazen potion I'd hoped it would be!
