Skincare - Face -Liz Earle - Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish

I found out about Liz Earle on a beauty blog (http://www.beautyscribbler.com/ which is fantastic and I am not being paid to promote it). I had tried Clarisonic and the Shiseido brush, and both just destroyed my skin. I wanted to add a gentle exfoliating step to my daily routine but didn't want to add harsh exfoliators. I bought the Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish and muslin cloth. The cleanser is thicker than DHC oil but spreads easily. I use it at night about 4-5X a week. I use a pea-pearl size drop of cleanser, rub it thoroughly on dry skin. I then soak a muslin cloth in hot water and apply it to my skin for a few minutes to get get the steaming effect. I then massage my skin with the muslin cloth twice and then rinse. I have used it for three weeks, and my very sensitive and acne-prone skin is in love. I look brighter and wide awake afterwards, and my skin feels very clean. The muslin cloth is very gentle and I don't apply a lot of pressure, just gentle circular motions. This definitely removes all the dirt and grime from my face. If I am wearing make-up, I will remove it first with DHC cleansing oil and then use Liz Earle.

Moisturizers -Ole Henriksen - Pure Perfection

My sensitive skin was doing well with a glycolic toner, so I thought using this as a night treatment would help. I was using it on nights I was not using the toner. But alas, my skin did not agree. The lactic acid was the culprit, and I broke out in a mess! It has taken almost a week, and I am still fighting cystic zits. This is a definite no buy for me.

Masks -DHC - Mineral Mask
rated 4 of 5

I have been using this product for two weeks, and every other day and as a spot treatment. It is easy to apply, no smell, and rinses off easily. As a clay mask, it also does not overly dry out my skin and has been great at "attacking" stubborn TOTM acne. I will wash my face and apply a light layer for 10 minutes. It dries quickly. I will rinse off, and my skin softer. I will leave it on overnight as a spot treatment too. So far, no irritation or breakouts. Highly recommend.

Hair Styling Tools -Goody - Spin Pin
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 5/20/2010 10:32:00 PM

I went to 2 Target stores ans a Wal-Mart before finding this at CVS. These are hot-sellers! It took me a few tries to get the pins to stay in place. I have medium-longish, thick long hair. I did have to use a pony tail holder though. I am happy to report that the bun is still in place 7 hrs later. Pros: sturdy pins, affordable, easy to use after a few tries Cons: Need patience if you have thick hair!

Cleansers -DHC - Deep Cleansing Oil
rated 4 of 5

This product has been wonderful for my skin. I had a terrible experience with Retin-A Micro and was in need for a simple, gentle routine to clear up acne and the mess left behind from RAM. I had tried this product as a make-up remover only, but after reading the reviews, I made this my MU remover and cleanser. I started with a small pump amount and massaged this onto dry skin for almost two minutes. I then rinse, tone, moisturize. After one week of use, my skin was so much softer and no new breakouts. During my two minute cleansing, the dried oil bits would just slide right out (gross I know but also so rewarding to see gunk coming out of my pores). After about one month of use, my skin feels so much better. The oil has helped moisturise and reduce the acne. So wonderful! If you are near a Japanese supermarket, try shopping there for the oil. It is approximately the same price but you don't have to pay for shipping.

Treatments -Unlisted Brand - Retin A Micro
rated 2 of 5
socalwahine 3/19/2010 7:49:00 AM

Sigh. I have lost another battle with acne. My derm prescribed this for my hormonal acne. I thought the product would help clear my skin as I didn't experience any peeling and only slight irritation. I could feel that skin on certain parts of my face were smooth, but what good is smooth skin when there are still breakouts in other places? I used the prodcut for 3X a week for ten weeks. I was slightly irritated the first two weeks and had the initial breakout. A bad initial breakout. But I also saw smooth skin on my nose and cheeks. But the breakouts on my chin, around my mouth, and necck NEVER stopped. It seemed that each round of breakouts was more painful and red than the last round. I finally stopped at the 12 week point and have not used the product since. PROS: covered by insurance so affordable, smooth skin CONS: initial breakout (or in my case, continuous breakout), never cleared acne

Cleansers -Fresh - Soy Face Cleanser
rated 3 of 5
socalwahine 1/7/2010 6:40:00 PM

So I'm a big The Hills/The City fan and think Whitney is a natural beauty. I read that she uses Fresh Soy Face Wash and Cream, so I figured why not give this a try. I just started Retin-A Micro and my usual Burt Bee's Acne Cleanser was too painful to use. I bought the smaller size of the cleanser at Sephora. I love the consistency of the product, and my face felt so clean afterwards without feeling dry. It was super gentle, and I could feel dirt being lifted away. But after one week, I noticed some new red bumps. I am not sure if it is b/c of the Retin-A causing the initial breakout or the face wash not working. I will keep updating, but for now, this will be a keeper. I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

Shampoo -Garnier - Fructis Curl and Shine
rated 2 of 5
socalwahine 1/7/2010 6:34:00 PM

I initially bought this product to help give definition to my textured, Asian hair. It's not incredible straight but not wavy that anyone notices. Texture is what my hairdresser calls it. :) The shampoo definitely helps in bringing out the wavy texture and gives nice volume. But I realized this makes my skin break out really badly--anywhere my hair touches my face or neck, awful breakouts appeared. I would love to repurchase this if it didn't make my face so miserable. So this gets a 4 as a product if it didn't cause breakouts.

Sunscreen -Bliss Labs - Best of Skintentions Daily Moisturizer
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 11/30/2009 1:24:00 PM

I'm sad to read that some users had a bad experience with this product. I am notorious for never using sunscreen b/c it was causing such bad breakouts. :( But after seeing the signs of crow's feet, I had to find something tolerable. I rec'd a sample of Best of Skintentions from Sephora. I was skeptical at first as I instantly thought the product would break me out and be totally greasy. The first week of use was un-impressionable--no results, skin just as oily. By the third week though, I noticed softer skin and less oily skin. I also had fewer breakouts. I also started rubbing the product on my fingers and then patting onto my skin as opposed to directly applying to my skin. I am happy with the product and how my skin was adjusted to it. And for a Bliss product, this is actually affordable. PROS: light fragrance, no added parabens and artifical chemicals, afforable (for bliss) CONS: only SPF 15, needs time for skin to adjust

Cleansers -Burt's Bees - Natural Acne Solutions - Purifying Gel Cleanser
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 10/26/2009 6:42:00 PM

I was not expecting much from this product because it was all-natural. I had been struggling to find a good cleanser and my Bliss Steep Clean had lost its cleaning power. I saw an ad in Lucky magazine and took a chance on this wash. The bottle is $10 at Target. I used it morning and night for about one week, and amazingly, the product did work. Blemishes were smaller, and I saw clear skin for the first time in several months. I used the cleanser in combination with DDF BP Gel, and my skin has been wonderfully clear. The cleanser is a bit runny and does not foam and works well with the Clarisonic cleanser. My skin did dry out a bit, so I am only using this with Clarisonic about 3x a week. Cons: Poor packaging as the bottle lid leaks a bit. Smells a bit like lemon Pine-Sol.

Eye Shadow -Smashbox - Eye Shadow Trio - Head Shot
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 5/19/2009 6:37:00 PM

Very pretty colors and create a beautiful neutral eye. I am not a fan of sparkles and shimmer, especially for the work place. These colors blend well and do not crease. There is just enough pigment to catch the light but nothing that shouts "Disco Queen." Colors did not fade after a hot and sweaty afternoon in the desert.

Nice gentle cleanser for oily skin. Washes face clean and leaves no residue. Skin is soft afterwards and no breakouts after three weeks use. Works well with Clarisonic cleanser Price is a bit high, but you only need 3/4 size pea to wash the entire face.

Misc Beauty Tools -Clarisonic - Pro Skincare Brush
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 3/4/2009 1:39:00 PM

Update: So I have gone back and (knock on wood) results has been just amazing. The first time, I was not patient enough and wanted immediate results. My second time, I used it diligently every day for one month. My skin went through an initial purge of two weeks. Lots of acne, blotchy skin. I started to feel like perhaps resuing the Clarisonic was a mistake. I made a deal to keep using it for two more weeks and see what would happen. Within the two weeks, the purging stopped and clear, beautiful skin appeared. My understanding is that the Clarisonic was bringing all the bad "stuff" to the surface and out of my skin. Unlike other products that just kept acne beneath the surface, Clarisonic acted like a detox diet for the skin. All the bumps underneath the skin have gone away--no more sandpaper skin around my temples. My advice is to be patient. I didn't see results for almost three weeks. ******* I had wanted the Clarisonic brush for nearly one year. I researched Internet articles, read dozens of reviews, and asked current users and my facial lady. I was going through some bad skin issues too—uneven skin texture, some redness around my nose, dull skin. I finally invested my money and had hopes it would work. After the first use, my skin was much smoother. An awful blackhead that had made a semi-permanent home FINALLY went away. The ugly, sand-like bumps around my temples went away too. In my eagerness, I started using the product every day, and this was a mistake. My skin started to turn blotchy. I returned to just once a week, and my skin felt much better. After about eight weeks of use, I am on the fence. My skin is smoother, but the skin tone and clarity have shown no improvements. I do notice that blackheads and extractions are easier to remove. I stopped exfoliating b/c of the Clarisonic’s heavy duty cleaning. I very much wanted this to be a lifesaver product. I may just return it and buy a great exfoliator instead. Any suggestions on how to get the wonderful results everyone is raving about are absolutely welcome!!

Blush -Chanel - Les Tissages de Chanel - Blush Duo Tweed Effect
rated 4 of 5
socalwahine 2/16/2009 12:19:00 AM

I saw the wonderfully adorable Keri Russell wearing this color on a cover of LUCKY magazine. She had just the perfect "I've-played-all-day-in-the-snow" cheeks but still looked sophistacated and natural. I was not disappointed when the Chanel SA tried out the color on me. The coral is a natural color, just the right amount of pink-coral-peach with the slightest amount of sparkle. It is similar to NARS Orgasm but Chanel has a longer staying power and does not fade.

Moisturizers -DHC - Coenzyme Q10
rated 3 of 5
socalwahine 2/8/2009 12:42:00 AM

I wanted this product to work for my combo, stressed skin and was trying to find an affordable replacement to Kinerase lotion. The first few days, my skin was firmer, and the skin tone was smoother and brighter. By the second week, I was developing bumps and some ugly acne cysts. I have stopped using since, and the skin is clearning. I am returning to Kinerase lotion.
