Lotions/ Creams -The Body Shop - Almond Oil Daily Hand & Nail Cream
scarletquill 12/2/2012 1:11:00 AM
This is my HG hand cream. I have no idea why they had to go and change the packaging though... it's awful! What was wrong with the plastic tube anyway!? It was fine. The metal tube (why did they go back to using these things!? If they're going for the retro angle, they can forget it, it's just not practical!) gets squished, it's terrible to travel with, it doesn't stand up on your dressing table/vanity area, it starts to get rusty and mangled when you're not even half way through it, it's difficult to get the very last of the product out of it, I've had the tiny little cap get lost so many times and have had it actually break on me once rendering the thing unusable so I had to wrap it in cling wrap!, I even bought their Christmas set of the Almond Oil hand wash and hand cream just so I could re-use the big pump bottle that it came in for decanting it out of these horrible tinny tubes! I also bought a couple of the old discontinued tubes of this for 8 bucks or whatever when they were trying to get rid of them but I'm just about to run out of these now.... nooooo!.... Bring back the old sensible, practical plastic packaging please Body Shop! I'm begging you! These metal tubes are the worst.

Concealers -Stila - Perfecting Concealer

It's a bit too cakey. If you need it only for a tiny spot or area, it looks okay, but if you're using it on a larger region of your face or under your eyes, it doesn't look that good. Overall, it's an okay product, nothing special...it's better than their stick concealer though.

Concealers -Stila - Stick Concealer [DISCONTINUED]

This is a complete waste of money and a horrible concealer. The consistency is awful and it doesn't blend well at all. It's overpriced- there are so many better concealers out there. Liquids and creams are so much easier to work with anyway. Don't waste your money on this.

Highlighters -The Body Shop - Radiant Highlighter
scarletquill 3/20/2010 3:23:00 AM
This is a gorgeous glowy liquid highlighter. It's nice and creamy but it blends so easily into the skin. It looks extremely beautiful without being glittery or overly shiny. You can even use it if you're a person who uses powder foundation or mineral makeup. Just make sure you add a sheer layer of powder to set it over the top. Definitely one of my HG products, it's amazing.

Concealers -Urban Decay - Surreal Skin Creamy Concealer

Only use this for under-eye concealing, the subtle shimmer is horrible for covering any kind of redness or blemish! They should call this just an under-eye concealer because that is what it is. It's okay for that, but it is a bit drying even for that area. The coverage for anywhere else on the face is not great. Not the best product.

The choice of shades is very limited. The consistency isn't very good either. Not a great product.

Concealers -Maybelline - Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Concealer

Fantastic all-round concealer. When I first bought this I chose it because I wanted a liquid concealer in a tube...and the majority of the others were either stick concealers (which I hate!) or creams in a small tub. I love that this is easy to fit in your handbag for touchups when you need it. I keep one at home and one in my handbag so I don't always have to go searching for it in the morning. I will say that some of the shades are a bit off, it might just be my skintone but there seems to be quite a big difference (jump) between the lighter shades. There needs to be at least another shade choice in there for us pale girls! That said, it is the perfect consistency. The Mac cover-up can be a bit too thick at times, but this smoothes out perfectly without looking cakey or dry. I'm not sure whether it's oil-free, but it doesn't seem to make my combination skin more oily at all, which I am happy about. I always seem to go back to repurchase this one no matter how many others I try. And I usually don't go for Maybelline as a brand in general, so that is saying something!!! It does also work very well if you blend with a small brush; either a concealer brush or an eyeshadow brush (clean of course!) but it blends out very well with just a patting motion with your finger. Having said it's an all-round concealer, I will say that it is better for redness and slight blemishes than it is for under-eye circles. It does okay, but if you put too much under your eyes it tends to look a bit 'off' or weird and a bit 'matte'. But being matte that makes it better for all the other areas because it doesn't add any unwanted shine or leave greasy-looking areas. It really is an amazing concealer for a pretty good price! I'm glad I found it!

Blush -MAC - Matte Blush in Cheek [DISCONTINUED]
scarletquill 2/27/2010 2:41:00 AM
This blush is a bit too orange on my pale skin. It's also not as soft or silky as other Mac blushes I have tried, I guess I prefer something with a bit more frost or shimmer. This one just tends to look a bit chalky. Definitely not the best look on extremely light skintones.

Brows -Kevyn Aucoin - The Precision Brow Pencil

This is awesome for shading and filling in brows! The only thing that disappoints me is that it isn't available in more brunette shades! If there were more choices of colours, it would be amazing! Still, it works very well. Wish it wasn't so expensive here in Australia too!

Makeup Brushes -Ecotools - Bamboo Blush Brush
scarletquill 2/27/2010 2:30:00 AM
This is a lovely soft blush brush! It's great for powder blushes. It doesn't pick up too much colour. The only problem I have with it is that it's not really that great at blending and buffing in the blush after you sweep it on. You need to have a kabuki on hand to finish off, but as long as you are okay with that, this is a good brush. As with all the Ecotools brushes, they are awesome because they are cruelty-free and environmentally friendly (including all the packaging they come in!) and they are stunningly soft! You can't get much softer out there, apart from some of the Body Shop brushes. These and the Body Shop brushes are my go-to makeup brushes because I find many other brands are too stiff and they scratch my sensitive soft skin. These are a winner! The only reason I didn't give this a 5 is because of its blending capability- if the bristles were a bit shorter it would be perfect for every aspect of blush application!

Eye Shadow -MAC - Dazzlelight
scarletquill 2/27/2010 2:24:00 AM
Always gorgeous! It's just perfect everytime for an all-over 'look wide awake' wash of colour for those of us who wear minimal eye makeup and just mascara, and it's a very pretty highlight if you're going out at night! Looks great on your eyebrow bone to define your brows and open up your eyes! It's my favourite Mac eyeshadow!

Makeup Brushes -Ecotools - retractable kabuki
scarletquill 2/27/2010 2:12:00 AM
This is almost as good as The Body Shop one. It's incredibly soft and so handy for keeping in your handbag as it can't get dirty or squashed out of shape because it's all covered. Love the fact that it's cruelty-free and so, so soft. I don't think many people will be disappointed with this one. I need soft brushes because I have sensitive skin, and Ecotools and the Body Shop never let me down! Mac face brushes are often too scratchy and stiff for my skin.

Makeup Brushes -The Body Shop - Mineral Foundation Brush
scarletquill 2/27/2010 2:08:00 AM
The Body Shop brushes are truly amazing all round, but their kabukis are really special. This one along with the rest of their brushes (both mineral brushes and normal brushes) are incredibly soft. I don't really like some of the Mac face brushes because they are so stiff and they scratch my sensitive skin, but the Body Shop brushes are gentle on my face. Sometimes they don't pick up enough powder, but if you blend properly they do deposit powder evenly. You just have to be careful to blend and buff so it looks even! I love that they are cruelty-free and that they wash so well! After I wash them they just spring back to their original shape and texture. Just remember with this one to dry it upside-down because you don't want the water seeping back into the short handle. I can't really fault it though. They wash better than the Ecotools even. This one is great to buff out any harsh lines and make your bronzer or blush look more polished and blended. Their bronzing kabuki is also really amazing, just has more surface area and great to bigger areas or if you want to add a light dusting of bronzer to your entire face.

Lip Gloss -MAC - Dazzleglass in Date Night
scarletquill 2/27/2010 1:59:00 AM
It looks very dark in the tube, but once applied it adds a shimmering pinky red gloss to the lips. I thought it would be too overpowering with my extremely pale skintone, but it's great for those times when you want your lips to stand out more and pop! For people like me who wear minimal eye makeup and just mascara, a lipgloss like this is essential to make me look less dead and pale! It's also very smooth and easy to apply!

Makeup Brushes -Ecotools - Bamboo Angled Eyeliner Brush
scarletquill 2/27/2010 1:53:00 AM
This is a very stiff brush which makes it great for eyebrow shaping and defining as well. I don't wear eyeliner so I can't speak to how well it works for eyeliner application, but it is quite a handy brush for using with eyebrow powders and to blend out harsh lines left by darker eyebrow pencil shading. Great for brunettes and those of us who have very dark brows who want to keep them nicely shaped or fill them in! For the price it is definitely a great brush, Ecotools really never lets you down. I like some of their brushes better than Mac. The only thing that I don't like about this one though is that some of the hairs are uneven, and I don't mean the angle, just some are out of place/longer than others; it would be better if they were cut more evenly.
