Hair Color -Clairol - Loving Care ] [DISCONTINUED]

This product is a godsend for fixing messed-up hair; however, not so sure about just for gray coverage. My natural hair color is a level 6 ash (light ash brown) with some gray. I tried the Loving Care to cover the gray and I had no luck with the product meeting that purpose. So, I went to a salon for color and highlights. I described to the stylist what I wanted and even brought a picture. This lady gave me the right shade but gave me warm coloring with golden highlights. She said the gray was making my hair "ashy." That's because it is ashy! I tried living with it for almost a week, but I looked and felt awful. Red hair is nice, but not on me! I tried Shimmer Lights, which toned down the highlights but did nothing for the red. Desperate and unwilling to go back to this salon (and of course bummed that I flushed $70 down the toilet -- I can mess my hair up for a lot less!), I purchased Loving Care in Light Ash Brown and just went for it (I certainly couldn't hate my hair more than I already did). My hair looks great again -- the red is pretty well gone. There's a slight hint in direct sun, but it's waaaaay better. I was a little apprehensive because the box said not to use the color I chose on light hair, but I found that it just toned down and softened my highlights and their color is just fine. I'll keep using this product while my hair grows out.

Cleansers -California Baby - Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash

After developing eczema, I had to quit using my regular shampoo and look for something that would not irritate my skin. I found this product at Target for $8.99 for a 8.5 fl oz bottle. It seems pretty pricey, especially sitting next to the $3 baby shampoo. Nothing was working so I decided to try it. I've found it to be gentle. It doesn't lather up a whole lot, but it does clean my hair. I have fine, wavy hair and it makes my hair soft and full. I use it everyday and it also works well as a facial cleanser/makeup remover, though it doesn't always remove some tougher waterproof mascaras. I will keep buying this shampoo.

My hair is darker (6), and it lifted color, making it look more orange (yuck!). I was trying to grow out my highlights, but I had to go to the salon for a color job. Was not pleased with this product and will not buy again.

Sunscreen -Neutrogena - Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 30

I really like this sunscreen. I have oily skin and have had a hard time finding one that's not too heavy, causing breakouts. After reading some reviewer comments about the effectiveness of the sunscreen, I did a little searching for my own answers. According to findings put out by Suncare Research Laboratories: "Products containing Avobenzone degrade in sunlight, but start out with SPF values several-fold higher than their labeled values. Thus their measured SPFs are their cumulative SPF values over the period of UV irradiation." The chart they provided showed the initial SPF at the time of application to be somewhere around 90, with degradation dropping to the low 20's (still within safe standards for protection). The researchers also add, "However the cumulative SPF was approximately equal to the labeled SPF*. We have observed similar behavior for other products containing Avobenzone." [the labeled SPF for their experiment was 30]. After reading this report (www.suncarelab.com), I feel confident wearing this sunscreen. It does appear some people experience an allergic reaction to Avobenzone, breaking out in a red, burning, roseacea-type rash.

Styling Products -Citre Shine - Straightening Balm

I have fine, wavy hair that has a huge tendency to become frizzy. For most of my adult life, I've had to suffer with products that either did nothing for me (mousse)or were too heavy for my fine hair (most frizz serums). I have used John Frieda's 5-minute manager along with Citra Shine straightening balm for about seven years now and, in combination, are the best products I have used to keep my hair under control. I spray my hair with 5-minute while my hair is still sopping wet and then I apply a small amount of the Citra Shine after ringing out some of the water out of my hair. I can either scrunch my hair into ringlets or blow dry it straight. I don't like either product so much alone, but together, they're great for me.
