Hair Color -Clairol - Nice n' Easy Foam
rebslo 9/6/2011 1:52:00 PM
As many others, I trusted a name brand and purchased the reddish brown foam for covering grey. The idea of highlights seemed like a nice change. I wish I had come to this site first. Yes, the smell is horrid. Most hair color products have a strong odor, but this is twice as bad and even after rinsing the product out, the scent lingered on my pillow. The color? Dark brown/black. No highlights as promised on the package. Stained skin resulted from contact that normally washes off easily. Now my ears itch as if I have a allergy from my own hair! Never again...

Cleansers -Aveeno - Ultra-Calming Moisturizing Cream Cleanser [DISCONTINUED]
rebslo 3/9/2011 5:24:00 PM
Thanks Aveeno for making a cleansing cream without mineral oil. I found this onsale at Ulta for just under $6- very reasonable. I like that no scents are added and it removes makeup and won't irritate my eyes when removing eye makeup. Of course it doesn't foam, so don't be upset or complain it is like a cream. Because that is what it is! I remove with a warm wash cloth and feel like a dream.

Cleansers -Burt's Bees - Orange Essence Facial Cleanser
rebslo 3/9/2011 5:16:00 PM
I am addicted to Oil Based cleansers and cannot stop myself from purchasing more. I got this product from my sister who tried using it in the shower and didn't like it. First, I apply to dry skin, not wet. I use between a dime and quarter sized amount. I rub in circles for a few minutes and the oil dissoves the oil in your face (remember chemistry? Oil dissoves oil). The orange fragrance is quite enjoyable. It does not foam nor should it. Foam does not equate to clean and often the bubbles you find in other cleansers are chemically induced to make you feel clean. After rubbing, you may feel the plugs in your face loosen. What a feeling! Remove with a warm wash cloth. Like a facial in your own bathroom!! Easy to find in most drugstores for $8.00, worth every penny.

Looking at the ingredient list, I cannot easily find a single oil listed! Why pay for this product when you can easily and more economically use any vegetable oil product from your kitchen and get better results? I use olive, almond sesame and or canola and apply after warming in the microwave (be careful). Leave on from 15 minutes to a few hours. Wash out and enjoy!

Scrubs -St. Ives - Apricot Scrub
rebslo 2/16/2011 5:22:00 PM
What a classic! I have come to believe this is too rough to use on your face as others have noted and will not repurchase. The list of ingredients alone is a mile long. I just don't need that many chemicals in a scrub. Will it tear your face as others have warned? I seriously doubt it. If it had glass in it perhaps. I have decided to make my own scrubs with kitchen safe items such as sugar and oil. Sometimes I just add some sugar to my regular cleanser and presto your done. I admit to pilfering sugar packets from restarants so I can store them in the bathroom without a mess.

Cleansers -Origins - Clean Energy Cleansing Oil

I am so pleased an American company has produced a cleansing oil for us non oil phobic. I am an oil based cleaner convert and this product is quite nice, priced well considering the other imported options and is full of natural ingredients. The scent has a citris base and is pleasant. The product takes off makeup with ease and rinses off after water is added. As others have noted, a pump included with the purchase of the bottle would be a plus.

Cleansers -Ponds - Deep Cleanser Cold Cream
rebslo 2/8/2011 3:48:00 PM
An oldie but a goodie. Drugstores like to hide Pond's on the bottom shelf and make you really search for it. This is a great classic makeup remover/cleanser that won't let you down. Makeup will melt off your face. I used a wet warm wash cloth to remove and it feels like I am getting an expensive facial. I do feel what some may call a residue, but I actually like this feeling, and skip a moisurizer. I have noticed some breakouts, but I tend to use multiple products so I can't say with complete certainty Ponds is the culprit. For some reason mineral oil based products tend to clog up my skin although all of them insist they wont. For what you are buying (whipped baby oil) I find $8-9 for the large 9 oz container to be a bit high considering that you can make this money go pretty far on other drugstore named brands. CVS and other stores do offer a generic version and the name brand tends to go on sale if you are vigilant wait for those days to get a few dollars off. This is a good product for those who wear heavy makeup or if you have dry skin, it really locks in moisture.

Cleansers -Neutrogena - Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser Cream
rebslo 2/8/2011 3:37:00 PM
I was on a search to find a simple cream cleanser that didn't contain mineral oil (ie. Ponds). I found a generic version of this item for just $4 at CVS (on sale!). I thought it was worth a shot as Neutrogena is a reputable brand. My first use ended in excess tingling perhaps due to my zealous application. I realized the menthol was the culprit and the next time I used less of the product and it reduced it to a more "cleansing refreshing tingle" vs. "get this off my face now tingle." Overall over the course of a few weeks, I am pleased with the results. No breakouts, clean skin, easy to find and cheap. My only concern is the fragrance- which I find medicinal and the menthol tingle. Does the addition of menthol add a benefit I am unaware of? Or is it there to make you feel the product is working hard to clean? Sometimes, I leave it on as a mask of sorts and I feel this softens blackheads. I then follow with a gentle foaming cleanser. Also, this product does not foam and it not intended to as it doesn't containing a lathering additive. I would prefer and unscented, minus menthol version, so I am on the fence about re-purchasing.

Cleansers -Aveeno - Clear Complexion Cream Cleanser
rebslo 2/8/2011 3:28:00 PM
It is surprisingly hard to find a decent non-mineral oil based cream cleanser. As with most cream cleansers, this does not foam, nor is is made to lather which I don't mind. After a long and hard search, I found this product by Aveeno. Price wise it runs about $7 in drugstores which I feel is decent. I like the cream like consistency and lack of fragrence. Another selling point for me is even though the label cautions against contact with your eyes, it does not burn or stink if you should slip up which is often the case with facial cleansers. My face looks and feels clean after each use. Kudos to Aveeno!

Skincare - Body -Dr. Bronner's - Lavender Liquid Soap
rebslo 2/3/2011 11:23:00 AM
A great bath and shower gel that I will use over and over. Dilute as it is very concentrated. Use a drop at a time and it will last forever. It is more expensive than "regular" soaps? Perhaps, but if you add water it comes out to be cheaper because you use so little of the product. Smells wonderful in the bath without being overpowering. Is the label ranting crazy? Yes! But it gives you something to read in the bath. Was Dr. B nuts? Yup! But he makes the best soap ever. I am a convert!

Gels/Soaps -Dr. Bronner's - Almond Castille Soap

Just about the best true soap you can buy. Economical. Remember to dilute, dilute and dilute. Will purchase Dr. B's again and again. I will never go back to SLS based soaps again.

Gels/Soaps -Dr. Bronner's - Peppermint Castille Soap
rebslo 2/3/2011 11:14:00 AM
I have fallen in love with Dr. B. After reading other reviews I literally ran to Trader Joe's ($8.99 for 32 ounces) to buy my bottle. I generally am not a peppermint fan, unless it is a peppermint pattie that is but the smell in the bath was fantastic. Almost better than eating chocolate. Almost. If you consider how concentrated the product is, the price isn't bad. Remember-Dilute. Dilute. I didn't tingle because I used a drop or two at a time as a body wash. I plan to use all over my house to clean. Perhaps a pump top would help dispense with care, but otherwise this is a perfect product.

Cleansers -Smashbox - Cleansing Oil
rebslo 11/8/2010 12:25:00 PM
Purchased on eBay for $9 plus shipping. Scent was not appealling to me at all. Very difficult to describe- almost like a smell used for a bathtub cleanser. Thin, easy to pump, large amount of product, but didn't impress me in cleansing ability. I didn't feel the "melting" of my makeup I was hoping for. I have used many other oil cleansers and even made my own. I don't mind if the oil doesn't wash off completely but didn't notice a residue as others have mentioned, however, I could be immune to the feeling by now. Would never buy at full price and would not purchase again at a discount either. From what I have heard, this product has been discontinued by Smashbox.

Cleansers -Serious Skin Care - Olive Oil Cleanser
rebslo 11/5/2010 11:11:00 AM
Purchased on eBay for well below the retail price ($6 vs $21). I am a oil cleansing addict and have used DHC, Smashbox, regular OCM and Origins. Packaging was acceptable. Directions indicate 2-3 pumps for face, I used more. Scent was acceptable, but neither good nor overly bad. The lather (which I don't really need or want) was fairly weak. Removed most of my makeup but burned my eyes, which is a dealbreaker for me. Would I pay full price? Never. Would I buy on eBay? No. I prefer regular olive oil, but it breaks me out so I am forced to find a product that will rinse away and thought this would be a good bet. I prefer my oil based products that don't lather and need to be used on a dry face. DHC brand was a still a winner, Serious Skin-not even in the race for me.

Cleansers -Unlisted Brand - Albolene cleanser
rebslo 10/21/2010 12:28:00 PM
Yes, it does look like a tub of petroleum jelly and takes getting used to- but I love it for removing make up. I message a generous amount all over my face and wipe off residue with a warm washcloth. It feels like I am giving myself a home facial. Some are turned off by the oil like feeling but if you massage for a while, you will feel the oil dislodging blackheads. Sometimes I follow with a foaming cleanser- but either way I don't feel greasy afterwards. Of course no extra lotion/cream is needed. I feel clean and moisurized.
