Sunscreen -Avene - SPF40 Lotion for Children
rated 4 of 5

Thanks to BTG for bringing this to our attention. I've pretty much lowered my requirements for highly-protective, stable sunscreens. It's okay for it to be sticky, shiny, greasy, heavy, drying, whitening... as long as it doesn't burn my eyes and doesn't ball up.

This sunscreen, thankfully, doesn't burn my eyes. It may be sticky but it's not too shiny, greasy, heavy nor whitening (I have tan skin). It's also very moisturizing, doesn't ball up and has no fragrance. What more could I ask for? :)

My friend has this and when I tried it I was totally blown away. I have never seen my eyelashes looking so thick and long. Needless to say I immediately got myself one.

Loose Powders -MAC - Select Sheer Loose Powder
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/14/2006 7:30:00 PM

I don't use makeup and have never really used loose powders but I was looking for something to tone down the shine I get from using sunscreens. This one works well. The SA was very nice and helped me choose the right shade for me -- NC30. This powder leaves my skin matte and matches my skin tone very well. It doesn't clog up my pores either.

My favorite scent. Light and refreshing floral. I'm not fond of fragrances as they usually give me a headache but not this one. I just love smelling it.

Lotions/ Creams -Vaseline - Healthy Body Complexion Moisturizing Lotion
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/14/2006 6:53:00 PM

I've been looking for a body lotion with alpha-hydroxy acid to help my skin get through the winter without getting dry, itchy and scaly. It gets really bad especially on my shins. I used AlphaHydrox 10% Enhanced Lotion last year and I thought it was fantastic. The magic ingredient though is AHA as it exfoliates and helps the skin retain moisture at the same time. I saw that Vaseline has a lotion with AHA so why not give it a try. This lotion works just as well leaving my skin so soft, smooth and hydrated. As with any body lotion, the best time to apply is after a shower.

Hair Styling Tools -Sedu - Ionic Ceramic Professional Flat Iron (Original)
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/14/2006 6:46:00 PM

I've been using my 1" Sedu flat iron for more than a year now and I'm very happy with it. I have thick, wavy hair and this iron smooths and straightens it out easily and quickly. This flat iron is also very light and heats up quickly. There's even an indicator light to tell me when the iron is hot enough for me to start using. Highly recommended.

Moisturizers -Cetaphil - Moisturizing Cream
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/14/2006 6:39:00 PM

If you're looking for a no-frills moisturizer then this is it. It is soothing, hydrating and it does not break me out. You can use as much or as little as you need. I use this when my skin is dry and irritated as well as when my skin is combination and it work both times. Highly recommended.

Sunscreen -La Roche Posay - Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics SPF60-PPD28
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 7/11/2005 8:11:00 PM

I decided to try this after the great reviews on the skin care board and because the sunscreen I was using Bioderma THP Lait SPF30 PPD20 was discontinued. Here are the sunscreens I've tried

Bioderma THP Lait SPF30 PPD20 -- balls up a little, no white cast, stings my eyes a little, a little drying, shiny

Bioderma BIO Lait SPF30 PPD20 -- balls up a lot, plenty of white cast, stings my eyes a little, very drying, shiny

Bioderma Familial Spray SPF30 PPD20 - balls up a little, no white cast, stings my eyes a little, a little drying, very runny, shiny

Bioderma Max Lait SPF100 PPD31 - balls up a little, little white cast, stings my eyes a little, a little drying, shiny. I can't really find much of a difference between this and the THP Lait.

Canadian Ombrelle Extreme Lotion SPF30 - balls up a little, thick, sticky, stung my eyes horribly, plenty of white cast, very shiny

Shiseido Cream SPF55 - plenty of white cast. I had a zit on my nose by the end of the day.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Dermo-Kids SPF60 PPD28 - doesn't ball up, doesn't run into eyes so no stinging, little white cast, doesn't dry out my skin. In fact, I can wear it without moisturizer. Less shiny, a bit thicker and stickier than any of the Bioderma sunscreens.

Hence, the Dermo-Kids gets my vote. I especially like that it doesn't ball up nor sting my eyes.

EDITED: It does sting my eyes! I changed my rating to 4 because of it. The seach continues...

Lipstick -Shiseido - Sheer Gloss Lipstick in Honey Tea [DISCONTINUED]
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 2/7/2005 5:03:00 AM

I'm on my 2nd tube of this lip stick. It leaves a sheer and very natural-looking color to my lips. It's funny how the same lip stick can look so different on different people. It looks pink on my Korean friend who has very fair skin. I have olive skin and it looks more red on me. However, it looks great and very natural on both of us.

Treatments -Unlisted Brand - Cellular Skin Rx- C+ firming Serum
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 2/7/2005 4:39:00 AM

I like the fact that this serum is a no-frills product (only 2 ingredients) that really works to brighten my skin. You only need to use very little so it lasts a long time. It's also stable. I've had mine since November and it still looks and smells the same as the day I got it. At $38/oz I think this offers the best value for money among all C serums out there. Their CS is excellent and the $2 shipping cannot be beat.

Styling Products -Citre Shine - Shine Miracle Anti-Frizz Polisher
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 1/9/2005 2:47:00 PM

I've been using this product forever. It's the only one that can tame my thick, very wavy hair. It's a bit heavy but that's what I need or I'll end up with big hair. Still looking for a product that can prevent frizzies in humid weather though but this is good for now.

Lip Treatments -MAC - Tinted Lip Conditioner - Petting Pink
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/9/2005 2:39:00 PM

It's my first MAC product. I thought the pink shade won't look nice on me bec I have brown skin but it surprisingly does. It moisturizes my lips well and I really like that it has sunscreen. The pot is huge but I wish it came in a tube so it will be less of a mess to apply.

Sunscreen -Coppertone - Oil Free Faces SPF 30
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 1/9/2005 11:44:00 AM

I suppose this is the best drugstore sunscreen so far. It's broad-spectrum, photostable, PPD ~8.7 (from Nora80s notepad), no detectable fragrance, sinks in quickly, not too greasy, and cheap. I'll continue using this until I find a sunscreen that has a higher PPD and the rest of its qualities.

Cleansers -Olay - Sensitive Skin Foaming Face Wash
rated 5 of 5
mariefm 1/9/2005 11:28:00 AM

I've been using this for several months now and I like it. It's a no-frills cleanser that foams and cleanses well, and doesn't leave my skin dry. It's fragrance-free and soap-free. I just bought 2 more bottles of this bec I found out from the Oil of Olay site that they're discontinuing this in favor of the Gentle Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin. The new one has aloe vera, comes in a tube and is $2 more expensive. Oh well.

Moisturizers -Alpha Hydrox - Enhanced Lotion - 10% AHA
rated 4 of 5
mariefm 1/9/2005 11:04:00 AM

I don't use this on my face but it's the best thing I have found to get rid of dry, scaly, itchy, bumpy, red patches of skin on my legs. Not sure what they are called but I get them every winter. Not this season though because of this wonderful product. I apply every morning after showering and my legs are just soft and smooth. I also use it on my underarms to get rid of bumpiness from shaving. I definitely recommend this product not for your face perhaps but on your body.
