Deodorants -Tom's of Maine - Natural Long Lasting Deodorant in Wild Lavender
kolwink 5/2/2013 4:33:00 PM
I did check MUA reviews for this deodorant, and then went ahead and bought it anyway. Brilliant strategy, eh, to ignore the collective wisdom and the (current) 1-star-ish rating bestowed by 16 other people. But I bought it with good intentions, seduced by the "Natural" label and the "Aluminum-free" tag.
Well, let me review. After a month of regular daily use, I say "liar!" to the long-lasting claim. It does not last long. It quickly makes ME smell "natural", although, you know, I don't really want to, hence, DEODORANT.
The *worst* part is that my armpits started itching- and then peeling. Lovely. What The Eff, Tom's. I dunno if it's because my skin has become attuned to Dove or Secret, and I'm going into aluminum withdrawal, but I can't stand the itching and the peeling. In my armpits. Sheesh. I tried to be make the healthier choice, I really did. But this is ridiculous.

Lips -Burt's Bees - Rose Tinted Lip Balm
kolwink 2/11/2013 6:28:00 PM
Note: Left this same review under the general "Burt's Bees - Tinted Lip Balm" product.
Gosh, I'm conflicted. I like this product very much, but it's basically 5x the price of my old standby. What to do?
I always used to stock up on the 3-pack of ChapStick's Lip Moisturizer (the dark blue tube with the white cap) at Target ... I think it was $3-4 for the pack?
(BTW: ingredients for ChapStick's Lip Moisturizer are, as far as I can tell:
Octinoxate 7.5%; Oxybenzone (sunscreen) 3.5%; White petrolatum 40.7%; inactive ingredients: aloe barbadensis leaf extract, carnauba wax, cetyl alcohol, fragrance, isocetyl stearate, isopropyl lanolate, isopropyl myristate, lanolin, methylparaben, mineral oil, paraffin, propylparaben, tocopheryl linoleate/oleate, vitamin E, white wax)
Then I got the Burt's Bees "Tinted Lip Balm Duo", $10 for 2 tubes. That *is* 5x more expensive. Maybe I can square it with my conscience by giving something else up ...
I played around with Rose, Red Dahlia, Hibiscus, and Pink Blossom; ultimately, Rose looked the best, I thought. I love the hint of color; it enhances my lip color in that great "like my lips but better" way.
I'm also a fan of the way my lips feel after applying this product. Whereas the good ol' ChapStick made my lips feel slick- as if the petroleum jelly was sitting on the surface without penetrating- the Burt's Bees oils do seem to sink into my actual skin and leave my lips softer.
However: during the past 15 minutes, I applied the balm, thought that I was pretty happy with the product, decided to write this review, started writing this review, handled a quick work task, came back to the review, and realized that my lips were totally dry. That brief staying power kind of blows. When I'm essentially paying $1 for a tube (ChapStick), I don't care ... but it stings a bit more with the higher-priced Burt's Bees.
Quite a quandary. I am going to sit here and smell the Burt's Bees tube (can't identify the fragrance, but I do like it) and ponder this deep problem.
3-star rating due to short staying power;
3-star price rating (oh come ON, Burt, you know this is edging towards over-priced-ness);
1-star packaging rating for extra and unnecessarily (and misleadingly) large cardboard tube used to house an absolutely standard-sized 0.15oz tube.

Nails -Lippmann Collection - Mermaid's Dream
kolwink 1/15/2013 8:34:00 PM
NOTE:
I also posted this (same) review under the brand "Deborah Lippmann".
I got Deborah Lippman's "Across the Universe" as a gift and promptly exchanged it for "Mermaid's Dream." (I hadn't liked the look of the glitter components- too big/bold for my taste). The small boutique didn't have very many DL choices, so I went with Mermaid's Dream- about the most non-traditional polish I own. (Um, Mermaid's Dream is the 5th bottle in my "collection", so now you know where I'm coming from.)
I applied 2 coats (no base coat or top coat- don't have either) and a few days of dish-washing have scrubbed almost everything off. The remaining patches on my thumbs still catch my attention, with the mix of gold, green, and light blue shimmer, and lovely cerulean blue medium-sized glitter. Each component color is very pretty, and the overall effect does remind me of iridescent fish scales seen in sunlight slanting through clear aqua water.
I'd seen swatches posted online, where the close-up photographs made the polish look unattractively chunky and gritty. I was pleased that 2 coats (applied with a light hand) didn't look so, well, horridly bumpy.
This polish is a bit too runny for my taste. Since I am a novice at doing my nails, I prefer thicker, gooey-er polish where it feels like I have more control over the amount of product that ends up on the brush. With thinner polish, I frantically race against the polish dripping down the brush, and the layer of color always ends up either thicker or thinner than I want it.
While I wouldn't buy this polish again, that's because:
(1) $18 is too much for my liking
(2) I've never really developed a nail-polish habit, going for months (maybe years) without wearing any ... this is a recent phase, and a beauty item that I just don't care that much about
Still, this color is quite pretty. I had previously bought (and returned) Essie's Turquoise and Caicos, since I couldn't figure out how to replicate my in-store test swatch, which left me with a lovely layer of sheer blue/green. Somehow, in my limited nail polish experience- Mermaid's Dream strikes similar visual chords- a flash of bright, sunny, green/blue ... as if I see a sunbeam underwater.

Polishes -Butter London - Rosie Lee
kolwink 1/9/2013 7:36:00 AM
My neighbor gave me a surprising birthday present this year: Butter London's Royal Navy, Deborah Lippman's Across the Universe, and L'Occitane hand cream. I was taken aback because she's a student and not rolling in the dough ... and also because these were all brands which mentally I'd pegged as 'too rich for my blood'. Still, even though I won't be making these items as part of my regular repurchasing repertoire, I decided to keep them and try 'em out.
Then I chickened out. I have small, short, and oddly-shaped nails, and am wary of bold, dark, or big glitter. I didn't like the swatches found online of Royal Navy or Across the Universe, so I went to the store and swapped them for Butter London's Rosie Lee and Deborah Lippman's Mermaid's Dream.
I know, I'm almost starting the actual product review now. Finally.
I decided that Rosie Lee would be for-toes-only, and proceeded to apply 3 coats (no base coat or top coat, since I don't own either). Man, I do love the color: a rosy-goldish, pinkishly-coppery glitter hue. It looked so warm and pretty on my toes that throughout the next day I took off my shoes at work a few times- in order to admire my feet. (Husband: "...")
I had read a Scrangie.com review of Butter London Scallywag (another glitter) which she described as drying to "an attractive sugary/sandy matte finish if you don't use topcoat." I'd say the same for Rosie Lee- my toenails definitely feel sandpapery (but not off-puttingly chunky). However, I wouldn't enjoy the gritty feeling on my hands.
Lastly, reviews online mentioned how difficult the polish was to remove. I didn't really care, since I plan to leave the polish on until it wears away on its own. Also, I just finished a 2.5 week trip to India, during which I wore sandals and walked constantly. I was pleased to note that the polish stuck stubbornly- after 10+ days, both big toes finally gave up the fight (husband stepped on one foot, and I dropped a suitcase on the other), but the little guys are still hanging in there, twinkling pinkly away.
Edit: I changed my mind and have been wearing the polish on my hands, because (unexpectedly?) 3 coats doesn't feel gritty compared to 1 coat. I guess because it's evened out? Anyway, here is my report:
- after 1 coat: sparse glitter, gritty feeling
- after 3 coats: opaque glitter, less gritty feeling
Indoor lighting gave 3 coats the coppery hue I love. Outside, beneath a cloudy sky, the copper disappeared and it was plain pink, unfortunately.

Gels/Soaps -Elizabeth Arden - Green Tea Energizing Bath and Shower Gel
kolwink 11/26/2012 4:05:00 PM
I don't particularly like change. Also, since I don't like having a lot of "stuff", I end up not having a lot of variety in my possessions. What I'm trying to say is, I have used exactly one perfume for the past 10+ years: Elizabeth Arden Green Tea.
The shower gel came as part of a gift set (perfume, gel, and lotion). I never used the gel until the past weekend, when long days of hiking ended with me leaning tiredly under the flow of hot water. Rubbing down with this gel seemed the height of luxury.
My gosh, do I ever love this smell. I find it simultaneously soothing- relaxing- comforting AND energizing- uplifting- exhilarating. I'll be an Elizabeth Arden Green Tea fan till kingdom come, I swear.
Con:
- unlike other reviewers, I did not find it lathered well at all
- would have preferred the gel to be dispensed in greater volume
- that lovely smell seemed to last exactly as long as my shower
That seems to be the consensus on EA Green Tea. Wonderful scent, terrible lasting power. So, enjoy this gel if you get it as part of a set. Don't buy it on its own. That's my $0.02.

Shave Products -eos - Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream in Vanilla Bliss
kolwink 11/8/2012 5:53:00 PM
Many many years ago, when shaving seemed like a fun, womanly thing to do, I had a bottle of Skintimate shave gel. I even remembered to use it sometimes. Then, well, I stopped bothering. Didn't have that many nicks, and surely using plain soap and water wouldn't dry my skin that much. It would? Well, fine, but I was lazy about shaving in general, so I just didn't care that much.
This year- so, after, like, a decade- I decided to put some more effort into skincare. So I spent far too much time reading labels at Target, rejecting all shave gels where I saw paraben or alcohol high up in the ingredient list. Then I came across the "eos" bottle, and braved the abysmal in-store cell coverage to load MUA on my phone. One long wait later, I read the rather crappy reviews, and decided to buy it anyway.
What I like:
- the scent. A soothing vanilla, but not overpowering or cloying. Win.
During my formative teen years, it seemed like every last product was boisterously "I SMELL OF FLOWER-FRUIT", and it was pretty annoying. Now it seems (although I am not backing this with actual data) that industry trends are swinging slightly towards unscented. (Whew.) So this mild scent is quite nice.
- paraben-free. One less source of estrogen-mimics.
What I don't like.
- lack of foam. The cream feels unpleasantly slick on my skin, and yet doesn't seem to be, you know, paving the way for a smooth shave.
- theoretically, I would need to use a lot of cream to prep my legs, yet I stop after one measly pump. So ... I get thin, inadequate product coverage, which doesn't help me get a closer shave. Fail.
I would not repurchase or recommend this. Although- what I *would* try- are you reading this, eos?- is a body lotion with the same soothing, intoxicating vanilla scent. Get on it. (Please/Thanks)

Hair Styling Tools -Goody - Spin Pin
kolwink 10/29/2012 8:00:00 PM
Read about this in the New York Times (10/24/2012), double-checked what MUA had to say, and then happily went to Target. Figured out how to use the spiral on my 2nd try, which is an astoundingly fast learning curve (for me).
I have rather thick hair falling a few inches below my shoulders. These two spiral pins hold my bun into place quite securely. Yesterday I went all Minnie Mouse, or Princess Leia, depending on your demographic, and tried for two mini-buns, with one pin apiece. That was rather less successful, as the buns loosened a little over the course of an hour. But they loosened CHARMINGLY. Cute messy buns, you know?
I like these. I think they're overpriced - what, $7 for two little diddly metal bits - and I'm not looking forward to inevitably losing and then having to replace 'em. But:
- they're fun to put in (husband looked mildly alarmed as I appeared to screw metal into my head)
- they're novel; I know they've been around for a couple years now, but no friends/family have been wearing them as yet (AND I DO TOO HAVE SOME TRENDY FRIENDS, LIKE AT LEAST ONE)
- they're functional ... they hold the bun!
- they don't appear to pull out hair ... over time, I know a few stray hairs would get caught around my elastic bands. So far, I haven't noticed pulling any out as I remove these pins.
- they're practically invisible (rather less so after I got a haircut- with the smaller bun, it's a little harder to keep in place, while the pins are a little more noticeable now. Still, I like these more than elastics)
I like 'em very much. Have been recommending them to friends and assorted sister-in-laws. However, given my general lack of fashion-how-to-ness, no one has listened to me as yet. Boo. I am a prophet without an audience. Also, not quite a prophet, since these were featured in the frickin' NYT. Oh well.
I like 'em.
Edit: I agree with another commenter's observation that screwing the pins together is a good way to store them (although that way you either find both or none).

Eyeliner -Ulta - Precision Liquid Liner
kolwink 10/10/2012 3:35:00 PM
I went to Ulta and, thanks to the combination of a sale and a coupon, walked out with $52 worth of eyeliner for $15. Man, I was STOKED. Also, confused (6 products cost less than 5). I bought 5 Ulta automatic eye-liner in teal blue (which I use daily, on my lower lash line), and this precision liquid eyeliner in 'carbon black.'
I've been playing around with this for four days straight, including reapplying before showering and sleeping. Well, that's what happens when one has avoided liquid eyeliner for years, because it seemed so intimidating- and now all of a sudden it does not!
All these years, I avoid applying eyeliner to my upper lid because it seems so obvious- that thick black Cleopatra-esque line, screaming HI I'M WEARING MAKEUP!
But, after nonstop tinkering, I've *finally* learned how to apply liquid eyeliner. Well, only on my right eye. Left eye still has telltale shaky-hands syndrome in the application, unfortunately.
However, it took me 4 days to realize that you're supposed to shake the tube before each use. Still, the color is noticeably less black than it was the first day.
I got a lot of happiness out of this small $3 tube, which was my first experience with liquid eyeliner. Gained a modicum of confidence. Jettisoned the idea that liquid eyeliner invariably looked bad on the upper lid.
But I would not buy this again. After using it for several days, the remaining color already seems less potent in the tube. And it fades a few hours after application. And I don't think it's waterproof.
Still, for $3, I've been having a lot of fun with this. And I can't help giggling whenever I think of the husband's reaction as we drove to the Ulta store. He smiled (bemusedly), seeing how excited I was to use my coupon and replenish my supply of teal blue eyeliners. "You know, you should get something else, besides the blue. Get something new and treat yourself!" Sweet, right? I'm sure he was happy that my huge splurge was an additional $3. Which I've then been painting on pretty much round the clock.
So, yeah. I would not buy this again. But I am enjoying it now. :-)

Hair Styling Tools -Unlisted Brand - Spornette 813 (medium round brush)
kolwink 9/28/2012 1:42:00 PM
When I was worried about boosting hair volume (without drastically altering my hair regimen, which is shampoo, conditioner, wet-combing, and air-drying), my hair stylist recommended using a round brush. I know, it's a totally radical concept. She also said things like "learn how to use a hair dryer" and "perhaps buy some volumizing product" but I ignored all that.
Then I started researching what kind of round brush to buy. The stylist had mentioned boar's hair bristles, which sounded a little odd. But I read up on boar's hair and was convinced. ("Boar bristles are easier on hair than cheapie plastic brushes and they redistribute oils throughout hair, boosting shine.")
Spornette seemed a good fit- recommended by In Style magazine, and without the crazy Mason Pearson price.
I wait until my hair is completely dry before flipping my head forward and briskly brushing my hair. Actually I should probably use it a little more gently, and try to tug less on the scalp. My hair does have more body and bounce, which is good, because I don't know how to operate (let alone own) any type of hot iron hair tool.
I chose the "813" because the size was about right for me, 1-3/4" diameter. They have smaller brushes (too piddly) and larger (mammoth ones which look vaguely menacing). This is just right for me.
The one thing I need to do is take better care of this brush :-( . It stays in my bag, and seems to accrue a good amount of lint and dust along with the actual hair. And I keep forgetting to clean it. (I'm looking at it sadly right now.)

Polishes -Essie - Pure Pearlfection
kolwink 9/27/2012 9:54:00 PM
UPDATE: I wear 2 coats for solid, near-opaque layer of silver, which has a warm (not cold) glitter. Without base- or top-coat, the polish lasts about 3-4 days, after which it peels off in one go.
All right! Full disclosure: I've been a member since 2005, and until yesterday, I had written exactly one review. This despite thinking that MUA was a pretty cool site and helpful community.
Long story short, I recently bought Essie's Pure Pearlfection and absolutely love it. And I decided I had to sing its praises on MUA. Except no one had reviewed it yet, and I had to reach 20 reviews before I could do so on my own.
So this afternoon was spent diligently and sincerely reviewing 19 products. And, now, I can finally gush about this polish.
Man, do I love it. I had problems with applying Essie's thin and runny formula- I ended up returning Turquoise & Caicos- but the "LuxeEffects Collection" is noticeably thicker. It makes application so easy, even for a novice like me.
I've concluded that subtle colors make me happy. Anything bold makes me worried that people are looking at my small, oddly-shaped, and super-short nails. So this shimmery polish, with its fine sparkles, is just about perfect.
I applied two coats four days ago, and it's holding up remarkably well. No chipping and hardly any peeling, despite no base coat or top coat. Totally worth the increase in price from my old Sally Hansen! And the formula is 3-free - no formaldehyde, toluene, or dibutyl phthalate. That makes me very happy.
Gosh, I love this polish so much. Its faint pearly sheen makes me feel quietly festive. I just told my teenage cousin to buy it, hoping that she thinks I'm cool enough to listen to my preaching. And- what bigger endorsement can there be- I just wrote 19 reviews in the space of one afternoon, just so I could add Pure Pearlfection to MUA's product database and write a review.
Big fan.
Also- quite a few nail bloggers have posted pictures of this polish layered over other colors. (It is supposed to be a top layer, after all.)
But I'm completely happy with this on its own. It's absolutely perfect ... pearlfect ... ha! snort ... for me.

Lip Treatments -Kiehls - Lip Balm #1
kolwink 9/27/2012 9:36:00 PM
A few years ago I ended up in Union Square, SF, and decided to splash some cash. Headed straight for Saks Fifth Avenue. You know it.
After much soul searching, I eventually decided to drop $7 (or thereabouts; at least, that's what the current price online is) on a tube of the original lip balm.
I know, I'm such a high roller.
The verdict is: perfectly fine balm. Lips feel soft. Fulfilled my desire to get something a little 'fancy' (... yeah, I know).
But, bottom line, I just don't really feel like paying $7 for a fiddly little tube of lip balm. Not when I got my Vaseline and my Chapstick.
Also, this may sound odd, but I like the way I can remove, apply, and recap the simple Chapstick tube one-handed. Kiehls - you can't, not with the fiddly little twist-off cap. Just a small category where Chapstick wins- less hassle for the clumsy.

Fragrances -Dove - Go Fresh Cucumber and Green Tea
kolwink 9/27/2012 9:26:00 PM
A poor man's Elizabeth Arden Green Tea? Ha. Ha. HA.
I bought this solely to keep at work; I figured it would be something good enough to spritz on after the gym or at the end of a long work day. But, considering I can spend twice the money and get half the volume of the actual EA Green Tea scent ... wait a second.
No, $10 for 1.7oz EA Green Tea is still a million times better than $5 for 3oz Dove Cucumber/Green Tea.
This scent is very powerful. I just uncapped the bottle and took a whiff. Unfortunately, I can't stand the scent any longer. I don't have any negative scent memories associated with it ... but I just can't take it. It's too strong. It's not the real thing. It doesn't make me feel cool, fresh, calm, or uplifted. It reminds me of bad, cheap air freshener.
I should ditch this product. Doesn't seem worthy of a swap though. Well ... anyone interested in San Francisco or Berkeley? Otherwise, I might adroitly leave it at a BART station or something, figuring it might eventually make its way to someone who wants or needs it.

Deodorants -Dove - Go fresh - cucumber & green tea scent
kolwink 9/27/2012 9:17:00 PM
Well, this has become one of my standards, and whenever I notice it on sale at Target I snap up a multi-pack. So ... I'm kind of stocked for the next year.
I wonder how many people migrated to this scent, hoping it would be 'Elizabeth Arden Green Tea' in deodorant form. That was definitely my hope.
Well, um, it doesn't smell anything like that rather popular fragrance. It's a perfectly serviceable deodorant, with the unfortunate powdery smell (not a fan). Oh well.
After my current stock runs out, I might try something off the beaten path ... off the Target shelves, I mean. Next project- find out what the deal is with aluminum in deodorants? EWG Skin Deep Cosmetics Database shows that "Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant & Deodorant Solid, Cool Essentials" gets a score of 4 ("Moderate hazard").
Yes, yes, SF Bay Area hippie alert. But seriously. I figure I get enough exposure to possible-carcinogens as it is- without directly rubbing something on my skin on a daily basis, which will tweak my immune system in the long run.
