Eye Shadow -Ulta - Verdigris

Maybe the color's been reformulated since the latest reviews. I was looking for a new olive green to replace my Lorac Olive eye shadow. I should have realized the "gris" in the name means GRAY. In other words this is NOT a warm olive, as some of the reviewers suggest. It's really more of a greenish gray, emphasis on gray. Entirely too cool for my warm toned skin.

Lipstick -Revlon - Colorburst Lip Butter in Fig Jam

I can't tell you how many lipsticks I toss because they turn pink on me or they're too bright. I am a warm-toned Autumn and my lips aren't full so bright colors aren't flattering. My HG lipstick is a Rouge Baiser I bought in Monoprix in France and is a soft tangerine. (Benefit's Saucy is a close match). I bought Fig Jam on the strength of the positive reviews and it actually works on me! Yes, it looks dark and forbidding in the tube. Rite-Aid has a 40% off sale this week so I tried it. You can't go wrong for $4-5. I've worn nude lipstick before (Revlon's discontinued Renewist line had a nice spice shade) but this doesn't make your lips disappear. Just a hint of warmish brown-red. I'll definitely buy this again.

Scrubs -Neutrogena - Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub

I can't speak for its effect on acne, but I love it as a cleanser. I see the other positive review is from someone in my age group, and the other reviews are from a younger acne-prone group. The tube doesn't leak in my travel toiletries kit unlike some pump style cleansers. It does the job and smells nice. I's about $6 at Ulta and Walmart. I recommend it as a cleanser to remove your makeup at night.

Lipstick -NYX - Round Lipstick in Orange Soda #588

Yuck. I should have read the reviews more closely. When I put this on I felt like I was 13 again wearing Revlon's Candied Violet. Remember those chalky lipsticks from the 1960s? I tried it under another color and still no go.

Lipstick -Bare Escentuals - Sweet Apricot
rated 5 of 5
kinshasa 4/7/2011 2:25:00 AM

I have golden skin and have to be very careful with lipstick, because many orange and peach tones turn pink on me and look awful. Sweet Apricot is brighter than my usual shades, but the color stays true. I'm more likely to wear it at night than during the day.

Eye Shadow -Wet 'n' Wild - Color Icon Single in Brulee
rated 4 of 5
kinshasa 10/25/2010 12:18:00 PM

Just picked this up for 99 cents at Rite Aid. I needed a new neutral color to use under my eyebrows. I used it all over the lid as a base. I had been using Cover Girl Simply Ageless Corrector --- less $$ than MAC's primer. Well, this is cheaper than both of them! Yeah, it's hard to open, but for 99 cents, I'll deal with it. EDIT: When you're about 3/4 finished with the product, the powder breaks up and you can't swipe it anymore. Be very careful opening it or the powder will fall out and go everywhere.

Eye Shadow -NYX - Ocean
rated 5 of 5
kinshasa 8/10/2008 12:30:00 PM

I was shocked at how nice this color looked on my brown eyes. I never wear blue. My base lid color is ALWAYS green, usually bright (NYX Lime Green). But I bought this color because it had a periwinkle hue to it, and I like L'Oreal HIP pigment in Valiant, but the pigment particles flake off onto the lenses of my glasses. It is definitely a periwinkle/teal/turquoise color, not a cool blue. It's nice to have a change from green.

Eye Shadow -NYX - Lime Green
rated 5 of 5
kinshasa 8/10/2008 12:24:00 PM

This was my introduction to NYX eyeshadow. I am always looking for a bright green for my brown eyes and golden-toned skin. I was using the limited edition Alexander McQueen Pharaoh paint pot and looking for a similar product. This is it! I got it in a swap and love it. In fact I bought another color in Ulta, the only store I can find single color NYX shadows. Ulta had a buy one, get second one 50% off so what a deal! NYX is comparable to MAC in intense color.

Mascara -Jane - Fan Club Clear Mascara
rated 4 of 5
kinshasa 3/12/2008 4:51:00 PM

I bought this because previous reviewers suggested using it mixed with eye or eyebrow powder to use on eyebrows. Thank you!!! What a great idea! My brows need filling in and I didn't like the look of powder applied with a brush. I tried Bourjois Eyebrow Mascara and loved the look, but it was expensive. Now I can get the same thing for a couple of bucks.

Eye Shadow -Jane - Eye Zing in Brownie Points
rated 5 of 5
kinshasa 3/12/2008 1:59:00 AM

Walgreen's had BOGO and I had $2 coupons, so I tried this dark brown shade. I was not happy with MAC Espresso--- it didn't seem dark enough for my crease. I think this one is the answer. With the BOGO and the coupons, 4 eye zings cost me 17 cents. Can't go wrong!

Eye Shadow -L'Oreal - HiP Shocking Shadow Pigment- Valiant
rated 4 of 5
kinshasa 10/8/2007 6:53:00 PM

I was looking for something other than green to wear on my lids. I have brown eyes and warm toned skin and golden brown/coppery brown hair (thank you Natural Instincts!). I love MAC Golden Olive and I have also used the L'Oreal Rebel (a lighter green). I can't wear blue or purple, but when I looked at this color it seemed more like a warm periwinkle. I gave it a shot and can't believe how good it looks. I went to the MAC store to find a similar color but there was none. The MAC cornflower pigment is a true blue and not suitable for me. If you wear a lot of green eyshadow, give Valiant a try for a change of pace. The HIP products are BOGO about once a month at any one of three drugstores in town.

Liquid -L'Oreal - HIP Flawless Liquid Makeup [DISCONTINUED]
rated 4 of 5
kinshasa 9/25/2007 1:07:00 PM

I don't understand the negative reviews for this product. OK, I'm in my 50s and my skin isn't prone to breakouts so I haven't had the problems some other users have had. I tried this because I like the HIP pigments. The foundation goes on smoothly and it's a nice feel. It give me just enough coverage-- my skin is fairly good and I just need something to even out the color. I wear a lot of bright gold, orange and green and the honey shade looks great on my skin. I got unsolicited wows from my daughter's friend who is a MAC maven.

Concealers -Almay - Nearly Naked Cover Up Stick
rated 4 of 5
kinshasa 7/22/2007 12:46:00 PM

I am ALWAYS looking for concealers for my hereditary under eye circles and uneven toned cheeks (part of being 54, I guess) and bought this based on reviews. When I was a teenager I used Max Factor Erace and HATED it. There really was no other concealer out there. It was thick and yucky. I was surprised and delighted by the texture of Nearly Naked concealer and how easily it glided on. I still use Mary Kay concealer as my #1 product but it's twice the price of this one. I've been using this on my cheeks and brown spots and it blends beautifully..

Received this in a swap. I am golden toned with brown eyes and wear green well. The color ws too light so I applied it with a wet brush. It's OK but doesn't look olive on my skin.

Hair Color -Clairol - Natural Instincts Hair Color
rated 1 of 5
kinshasa 7/3/2007 2:06:00 AM

I have used Natural Instincts for years, mixing 2 or 3 colors for variety. Love the stuff. Then they changed to a creme formula--use on dry hair, so this eliminated one step, but it was hard to squeeze out of the tube and mix with developer. Also I couldn't mix 2 or 3 colors. Today I tried the new Vibrant in medium reddish brown. I should have read the box more carefully. THIS IS PERMANENT COLOR, FOLKS! Their marketing people should be shot. It should NOT be called Natural Instincts, which is misleading as most people will assume it's semi-permanent. And it's right next to the semi-permanent stuff on the shelf! Same squeeze tube, OK, but the ammonia smell socked me. My eyes started watering and it was hard to breathe. I should have realized then that this was a permanent formula. Well, I started so I was going to finish. My scalp tingled and my eyes burned a bit but that subsided. I liked the resulting color but I don't want to start using permanent hair color. My gray is easily covered with semi-permanent. Luckily I have short hair and it grows quickly, I have a cut every 5 weeks so within a few months the permanent color will be gone.
