Misc Beauty Tools -Clarisonic - Mia
rated 5 of 5
hags101 4/23/2012 7:42:00 PM

First, let me tell you that I have several of these types of face brushes. I will explain each of them and compare them to the Mia which I prefer. The Olay Pro X and DDF Revolve are the same except that the DDF has a sponge attachment for use with their microdermabrasion scrub (baking soda). The heads for the Pro X and Revolve fit on either unit (tried them myself!). They are nice devices to use for scrubbing my face (note: review for the brush attachment on DDF not for the sponge attachment), although my sensitive skin can get raw from these brushes if used for too long and my skin starts to get dull looking after 3 months use of either of these units. I was disappointed because both the DDF and Olay unit did not keep my stubborn clogging pores clean any differently than with my oil + emulsifier cleanser alone. Now for the CLARISONIC MIA: with the SENSITIVE BRUSH HEAD that came with the unit - it made my skin feel softer than the Olay or DDF units. Unfortunately with the sensitive head brush my pores started clogging again after 3 months similar to using my oil + emulsifier cleanser alone and the sensitive brush head felt slightly scratchy on my face. I purchased the DEEP PORE BRUSH HEAD and have not looked back since! This brush head makes my skin feel cleaner deeper down, it is gentler on my skin, and once I worked up to using it 2x a day the FLESH COLORED TINY BUMPS ON MY FACE HAVE DISAPPEARED! I started working my way to using this 2x a day by using it 1x day for 2 weeks, than 2x a day a couple of days a week for a month. This is how I use the clarisonic mia: I sweep each area of my skin in a circular motion ONE time and I only lightly touch the unit to my skin. If I used it to scrub my face (scrubbing harder or circling it over and over each spot) my skin would be red and raw (as with any of these types of devices). I also love that the unit is waterproof and rechargable! I never see other units that are rechargable! The charge usually lasts 5 days or more with using it 2x a day. I either use the Mia to work in my oil cleanser + emulsifier (oil on dry skin and use the unit to massage) or I wet the head (dip it into clean water on my hand) and massage it to clean my pores deep down and get the oil cleanser + emulsifier off. I can even use glycolics and fruit acid masks with the Mia and I have somewhat sensitive skin that reacts to products often. I just wait for a little before applying the acids after I have used the Mia.

Skincare - Face -Clarisonic - Sensitive Brush Head
rated 3 of 5
hags101 4/23/2012 7:22:00 PM

I prefer the deep pore brush head for my Mia over the sensitive one that came with the unit. The sensitive head felt slightly scratchy on my skin and has not kept my pores cleaner than using my oil cleanser (with emulsifier) does alone. The sensitive head has similar results as when I used the Olay Pro X or DDF Revolve brush (had both units); only the sensitive head brush made my skin softer than the Olay or DDF. Now for the deep head brush: smoother on my skin, 6 months of continuous use now and my pores are still clean, once I worked up to using it 2x a day (started with just 1x day for 2 wks, than 2x day a couple days a week for a month, than 2x day) IT GOT RID OF ALL MY FLESH COLORED UNDER THE SKIN TINY BUMPS on my face! My skin is looking awesome from this brush head! When I use it I only sweep each area on my face in a circle one time and I lightly touch my face with it. I do NOT scrub it on my face or sweep over the area again and again because it would (like any of these types of devices) leave my skin raw and red. I have sensitive skin that is very oily (when I do not use my oil + emulsifier cleanser) and extremely acnegenic. I break out from almost any product and get irritated skin easily.

Treatments -Unlisted Brand - lime juice
rated 5 of 5
hags101 4/7/2012 8:14:00 AM

Lime juice is great for oily skin which is also sensitive! I was using freshly squeezed lemon juice in the morning when I woke up (1 hr before showering) to lighten some sun spots and brighten my skin but I found that this juice gives me bumps all over my face and left me with blackheads in unusual places (around my eyes.....). I thought I would give lime juice a try to see if it would lighten my spots. Well, I was pleasantly surprised with the results! First, when I wake up my skin is oily in the T-zone and after using the lime juice (not sure how long after as I do not look in the mirror again until I shower) my skin is no longer oily. This juice also zaps white heads! The white head is completely gone by the time I shower.... every time! It also leaves my skin super fresh. I think that this freshly squeezed juice works better for me because it is not as oily as the lemon juice; if you squeeze fresh juice you will notice that the lemon juice leaves an oily residue on your fingers. I need to note that I am not against using oil - as I make my own oil cleanser - see my notebook (2/3 hemp seed oil, 1/3 polysorbate 80, 1-3 Tbsp each of castor oil and rosehips seed oil), but leaving oil on my skin is too much for my super acnegenic skin! I have also read that lime juice works to balance oily skin. Good stuff!

Shampoo -Oscar Blandi - Pronto Dry Shampoo
rated 1 of 5
hags101 2/15/2012 6:22:00 AM

This stuff is horrible! The only thing it has going for itself is that is has a nice application tip on the bottle. So, I have tried cornstarch on my hair when first starting out with dry shampoos and the results were almost the same! With this product it goes on really chalky (not as chalky as cornstarch though). My biggest complaint is how it works though. My hair is fine the next morning after washing it - but by that afternoon it gets really oily at the roots. Well to my horror, I used this before venturing off to campus - by that afternoon my hair was just as oily as without this stuff with the addition of being stringy at the roots from this product. Plus it did nothing to freshen the scent of dirty hair - which I hate more than anything! I also tried it on slightly oily hair with the same stringy greasy results. I will stick to my Bastite dry shampoo. I get around 8-10 uses out of a $10 bottle (not ideal - but way way better than using this crud) - but it works wonderfully! I have dishwater blond hair that goes darker in the winter and the Batiste does not leave chalky marks on the roots. The best part of Baste is that it gets rid of the dirty hair smell - all day! It also works wonderful - whether I use it directly on already oily roots or as a prevention the night before I plan on not washing my hair. Dry shampoos really save morning time especially for long hair.

Skincare - Face -Unlisted Brand - Mountain Rose Herbs Aloe Vera Gel
rated 5 of 5
hags101 2/4/2012 8:38:00 PM

I trust the quality of MountainRoseHerbs products. I reach for this aloe vera gel 2x a day sometimes more. I have really sensitive skin and this soothes it nicely. I use it as a buffer from my sunscreen between the skin on my neck + decollete (really really sensitive there) and splash it on my entire face (around eyes, on the lips...). It is not super moisturizing, but it gives my skin just a little extra. I like to mix it with my moisturizer during the day... and use it alone in the evening. I will even put some on a cotton pad and sweep it over my face to freshen up in the evening. The consistency is more like a juice than a gel. It has immediate tightening qualities on the skin. I also really like the calendula floral water from MRH to heal and balance my skin.

Treatments (Eye) -Mario Badescu - Special Eye Cream V
rated 5 of 5
hags101 1/16/2012 9:51:00 AM

I tried this eye cream last night and I am very impressed! I thought that MB dermonectin was my favorite moisturizing eye cream until now. I patted a tiny bit (just enough to get my pinky finger wet with product) of this eye cream over my eye area (upper and lower) and on my lips last night before bed. Well, the moisturizer is still on my lips and both places on my face are very dewy and moisturized. This product also did not make me break out - which very rich eye creams (like MB Glycolic eye cream) make me break out where the product creeps to the skin between the eyes (cystic pimples) and to the skin on the face bone around my eyes (white heads). This is very rich so it cannot be used under makeup. Would buy over and over - but with their sample size eye creams I will not have to buy for a long long time!

Toners -Unlisted Brand - Calendula Hydrosol
rated 5 of 5
hags101 1/15/2012 9:43:00 AM

I purchased this hydrosol from MountainRoseHerbs. The hydrosol is a by product of an essential oil - where the whole plant is usually steam distilled in copper or stainless stills. This is my favorite hydrosol out of rose, rose gerenium, and lavender. Here is the information on this spray from MRH: "Calendula is a well-known and loved herb for its therapeutic properties, and this true Calendula Hydrosol has an infinite amount of possible uses! Beneficial for skin disorders, rashes, hotspots, epidermal healing, scratches, abrasions, sunburn, scars, and an all around skin tonic. Calendula Hydrosol has anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, and astringent properties. The aroma of our Calendula hydrosol is refreshing, soothing, sweet, and mildly floral. This hydrosol is a perfect facial toner, and may be included in your skincare and herbal formulations, added to bathwater, or used within a compress for aches and sprains. Suitable for food and cosmetic use. " It has a light scent of dried flowers... but I love what it does for my skin! My skin started looking dull and it was getting really congested and oily. This spray calms my skin, heals pimples, refreshes my complexion for the entire day, and it balances it so that it does not become oily! I did extractions on my T-zone where it was becoming congested (use an oil with emulsifier cleanser which helps tons with balancing the oily skin also) and I am usually oily after until my pores get used to being unclogged - well after using this spray my pores did not become oily and my skin was not red the next day like usual. It is $9 for a 4oz bottle with a spray top and the product is organic. Watch the ingredient list from other producers since I found additives in other brands. Another good place to purchase hydrosols is GardenOfWisdom. My second favorite hydrosol is rose gerenium since it makes my complexion glow, turn rosy, and also tones and calms the skin.

Misc Beauty Tools -Unlisted Brand - TEI Spa - The Point
rated 4 of 5
hags101 12/30/2011 3:33:00 AM

I just started using this device and will update accordingly once I have used it for several months. I wanted to comment on how this product works. Here is what it says from the TEI Spa website: HOW IT WORKS: The Point utilizes a micro-current; a gentle, safe, low level electrotherapy to lift and firm fine lines and wrinkles, reduce puffiness as well as increase product penetration. The Point™ has a targeted active delivery system which allows you to zero in on areas of concern with maximum results. Enhance your results when used in conjunction with our 24 Karat Gold Firming Serum. Our brightening and hydrating platinum active firming gel combines the anti-aging effects of 24 Karat Gold, hydrating properties of hyaluronic acid, calming chamomile and rose flower extract and multiple peptides to deliver visible wrinkle reduction and prevention while firming and toning the skin. Experience the benefits of a professional Spa visit in the comfort of your home with just minutes of use a day." The gold in the serum is tiny flat specks of gold which I cannot see as adding any benefits to the skin since they are too large to be absorbed - but they may add in the electric charge of the tool. The tool has 5 settings and it beeps while in use letting you know to move onto the next area with circular motions with each beep. At first I did not think it was working and set it to "5" while using it under my eye. The skin started to quiver directly under the tip and I knew it was working! I have only used it 2x with the serum it comes with and use it on the setting of 3 since I do not feel the charge - only a slight buzz. The device with the serum retails for $140. The serum retails for $65 (Note: TEI Spa products do go on sale). The directions for use are not as through as what is offered online (the safe and unsafe areas). Unfortunately I used it in the unsafe eye area the first use (when I went up to a 5) and felt the charge (which did not hurt- although I could see my skin jump under the tip). The serum was cracked that came with the device and leaked out most of the contents. I will be contacting customer service and updating my results of use and experience with customer service regarding the broken serum tube. Other than that - the customer service representative was very helpful with the instructions for use with all the products I own (The Point, Oxyderm, & UltraCleanse). I would like to add that this product comes with a special battery (not a normal replaceable battery like the AA or AAA) that is suppose to last several months - although the cost of a replacement battery is only $5 from the TEI Spa website. ***Update: the customer service is wonderful. The representative I talk to directed me to return the serum. Once they receive the serum they will send me a new one and refund my shipping cost. I would like to add that I have used this for 3 days in a row 1x per day and I can see and feel results (tiny amount of soreness in muscles around the eyes after using it). This does not get rid of wrinkles (may be too soon) but it has really tightened my skin! I know it is the device because the first two times I used it on the unsafe eye area (too close to the eyes) with the serum all over my eye area with no results. The next three times I used it in the areas around my eyes (where my crow's feet stretch to) starting from the outside of the wrinkle area and working inward (avoiding the unsafe eye area). I started with the device setting on 5 and went down to a 3 closer to the unsafe eye area). I noticed tightening after using it this way the second time - and more tightening in other areas of the face (corner of the lips where starting to get frown lines) after the third use. I am going to continue use and update accordingly (maybe 5 stars?). I found in the Q&A section of the website that I am suppose to use this device in slow circular motions and move from area to area when it beeps - I was using it fast, so I will now start using it as directed.

Misc Beauty Tools -Unlisted Brand - TEI Spa - Oxyderm
rated 4 of 5
hags101 12/30/2011 3:14:00 AM

I just started using this device and will update accordingly once I have used it for a couple of months. I wanted to comment on how this device works. It is suppose to introduce more oxygen into the skin and disinfect the skin while calming irritation and decreasing acne. I am not sure if it works yet as I have only used it twice. The first time I used it for too long (probably one minute) because my skin was left flush for the entire day- similar to a slight sun burn (skin type is very oily and acnegenic but also sensitive - but I am able to use acids without problems). The device does not come with as helpful of instructions as their customer service department I called. The person whom I spoke to suggested that I use it for 30 seconds and use before my toner after washing and drying my face (whoops - used it too long for first use). One reviewer I found on YouTube said that it took down the pimple (cystic from her description) overnight - unfortunately I have not been able to have comparable results since the two cystic pimples that have formed on my face since purchasing this device were between my eyes and right under my nose which are difficult places to circle over and over again with the device (which is the directions for use over a pimple). The overall directions are to use a circular motion over your T zone than over the "U" area of your cheeks and chin. It also suggests going over a pimple several times with a warning not to exceed 5 minutes of use. I have only used it on the first setting (goes up to 3). It gives a static electricity to the skin (little electric shocks) which leaves a weird static electricity smell to the skin. The static electricity reminds me of when I was a child and my PJ's would spark under my blankets (but this device does not give off visible sparks). I also purchased the UltraCleanse and The Point which I will be reviewing. This device retails for $100. Again - will update with further use.

Misc Beauty Tools -Unlisted Brand - TEI Spa - UltraCleanse
rated 4 of 5
hags101 12/30/2011 2:38:00 AM

I gave this 4 stars instead of 3 because I did not want to give it a bad rap just because it is too aggressive for my delicate and sensitive skin. I purchased this item at the same time as the DDF Revolve 400 thinking that it was the same with more options and cheaper refills and that I would return the DDF Revolve (which is the same device and brush as the Olay Pro-X with the exception of the sponge attachment). Unfortunately this UltraCleanse device does not meet my expectations for use on the face. It retails for $75 and comes with a salt scrub (does not contain enough salt bits to be used as a scrub). It comes with the tool, face brush, face sponge, body brush, pumice attachment, and salt scrub. It runs off of 4 AA batteries and has one speed (high - compared to Olay Pro X and DDF Revolve devices that have two speeds which are similar to med and low). I do not like this device for the face and will keep the DDF Revolve for several reasons: the body brush is too scratchy and stings my skin (sugar added to body wash works better for buffing my body), the face brush is somewhat stiff compared to others (DDF & Olay - although some may prefer this more aggressive face scrubber), and the device spins too high for the "buffing sponge" since it tugs at the skin with the "microdermabrasion" scrub (baking soda) from DDF (note: some users use it to push lotion deeper into the epidermal layer of their skin). I like the pumice stone attachment for the feet though. If this device came with 3 speeds (adding med and low) and the body and face brush were softer on the skin I would love this tool! As of now I will just use it for the feet (pumice attachment) and microdermabrasion for the hands (with face brush and sponge). The refills are only $4 (face brush, sponge, pumice) - $7 (body brush) for each attachment which is much better than DDF's $50 for two attachments and the scrub which comes in a kit. I also purchased the Oxyderm and The Point from this brand and will be adding a review once I have used them for a period of time. Note - one reviewer I found online for the UltraCleanse (comment on an Amazon review) said that the device stopped working for her because it got wet in the shower - so my suggestion is not to use directly under water (stop the water and scrub). Other reviewers online said that the stiff brushes became softer after use - maybe if I just use them on my legs (which are not sensitive) they will soften up enough to use on the rest of my body and face (although body brush stings because it is so scratchy - even on the legs)... If I were to choose between the UltraCleanse (including the DDF Revolve and Olay Pro-X devices) and the Clarisonic Mia the Mia would win because it makes my skin super soft (softer than the at home microdermabrasion devices)! I will update if I feel differently using this device with a creamier wash than the the sea salt scrub on the body. Also- this may be the same item as the Spa Sonic Skin Care System from Epicare Ltd available from Walmart, Target, and Walgreens? (older packaging is the same color unit and attachments as the UltraCleanse).

Treatments -DDF - REVOLVE 400X Micro-Polishing System
rated 4 of 5
hags101 12/30/2011 2:20:00 AM

This device is the SAME as the Olay Pro-X except that the olay does not have the sponge head. Both the Olay and DDF have the scrubbing brush which feels the same and does the same at scrubbing the skin clean. Both brands have duo speeds (med and low) that rotate the same (as far as I can tell turning them both on next to one another and using them). The Olay one retails for around 30 and the DDF one for $100! I bought mine when the Skinstore.com had a $50 off coupon when spending 200 (also purchased the clarisonic mia) so I consider this item to cost me $48. The polishing crystals are exactly the same as the microdermabrasion polishing crystals from Olay - except the Olay contains fragrances. The "polishing crystals" from both brands are baking soda. Kind of places the prices of these "scrubs" into perspective. The refill from the DDF is $50!! but contains two heads and the "scrub." The refill on the Olay brushes is 2/$10 + the cost of the microdermabrasion duo set (separate from the Pro-X device- but same ingredients as DDF microdermabrasion scrub). If the Olay one made the sponge head I would have no use for the DDF one. The sponge head applicator makes the microdermabrasion gentler than using your hands because the pressure is lighter - but more even. I have not found a device that compares to the DDF in quality, but for $100 retail price I expect more.... such as being rechargable like the Clarisonic Mia and having different heads like the TEI Spa UltraCleanse (device with different heads for face, body, and feet retails for $75 - but I do not like for face because rotates only on high and at this speed sponge tugs at skin and brushes for face and body are too scratchy feeling). If I were to choose between the DDF Revolve and Clarisonic Mia the Clarisonic would win by far because it leaves my skin softer! I would also like to add that the sponge and brush from the DDF fit the Olay device - clicks right on (and vice versa)!

Masks -Arcona - Raspberry Resurfacing Peel
rated 3 of 5
hags101 12/9/2011 1:15:00 AM

I liked using this peel, but it is very similar to Garden Of Wisdom's Majik Exfoliating Mask.... actually the GOW mask is much stronger which doesn't seem to make sense because it does not contain the acids. But the Majik mask heats up faster and my skin is left softer and more radiant than the Arcona and the GOW one is something like $17 for 2oz vs. $68. I just like the results of the Majik Exfoliating mask better so I will not be repurchasing this one. I do adore Arcona's Reozone 40 tinted sunscreen and the Solution though!

Masks -Garden of Wisdom - Majik Fruity Exfoliating Mask
rated 5 of 5
hags101 12/9/2011 1:10:00 AM

This mask is great..... similar but better than Arcona's Raspberry Resurfacing Peel Mask that retails for $68! This mask leaves my skin really soft and radiant! The first time I used it after I put it on I was like oh man this is going to hurt.... because it started to work immediately by heating up... but than it just heated up and did not sting AT ALL even on my sensitive skin! Yes, my face is red for about 30 minutes, but than it calms down and is baby soft!

Misc Beauty Tools -Olay - Professional Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System
rated 4 of 5
hags101 12/2/2011 11:49:00 PM

This is a decent cleansing brush that I have been using 2x daily for the past 4 months. I really do not think it compares to the clarisonic because they use different types of "energy" where the Pro X spins and the clarisonic vibrates. The Pro X makes my skin feel even cleaner than normal...and cleans my pores a little better, but not enough to call this my HG. I use a homemade oil cleanser with emulsifier to get a deep down clean in my pores which works to keep them clear for around 3 months (when I need to extract) and was hoping this brush would keep them cleaner longer but it has not seemed to make that much of a difference in the long run. I still have persistent blackheads on my chin and find some on other areas of my skin. This brush has not done a thing for the under the skin flesh colored bumps I get or reduced breakouts. I like using this the best during the rinsing step to my oil cleanser. The two speeds are nice, although I usually just use the high (2x day) - but have used the low when my skin felt sensitive. I am sometimes left with dry patches because it can over exfoliate if used for too long (if used for just one pass over each area of my skin it feels fine). The batteries last a long time (3 months before starting to slow) and the brush should be changed monthly (becomes scratchy feeling on my sensitive skin after a month of use). The unit is also durable even if it is not totally waterproof - for some reason water got stuck inside the unit (brush end) when I used it in the shower (could hear it swishing around but would not drain out immediately -stuck inside for a couple of days) and the unit still works (now I make sure to turn away from the water when using this). On a whim and because the SkinStore was offering $50 off I ordered the DDF Revolve 400. It is exactly the same as the olay (even down to the strip of gray accenting the handle -just a little longer head) except it comes with 1 brush, 2 sponge, and full size scrub (main ingredient is baking soda just like Olay Microdermabrasion set). The DDF is regularly $98! But when you compare it to the Olay ($30 with one brush) and refills for the Olay are $10 and microdermabrasion is like $25 ... the prices come close if I were to buy the Olay scrub, unit, 3 brush heads. YES, THE DDF REFILL BRUSH AND SPONGES FIT THE OLAY UNIT PERFECTLY - tried them myself! They click right in. I like that the DDF has the sponge attachment for buffing a microdermabrasion scrub onto the skin -which is why I ordered it - but 1 week after ordering I ran across the TEI SPA UltraCleanse unit which contained a scrub, handheld device, sponge, brush, body brush, and pumice stone for $50. The TEI unit does not have two speeds like the Olay/DDF unit.... but refill face sponge, brush, stone is only $4 vs $10 or $50 (DDF pack that has scrub, brush, sponges). I may return the DDF and get the TEI SPA unit for occasional microdermabrasion with the sponge for the face and use the body attachments because it seems like a better deal (if the brush speed is adequate). (Note: the i-skin microdermabrasion crystals from Sally's Beauty Supply may give better results in the long run for microdermabrasion to use vs a baking soda scrub - great reviews here and at Sally's). For my stubborn blackheads on my T-zone that come back after 3 months (which is great because they used to come back within a week with a regular cleanser after extractions) I am trying the clarisonic mia with the deep pore brush to use every other evening. I will update how they work in a couple of months. Update*** I like the Clarisonic Mia the best! I have not purchased the deep pore head yet (the one I need for congested pores) but the Mia makes my skin softer than the Olay Pro X (and DDF with sponge or brush attachment). The TEI Spa UltraCleanse is not good for the face because it spins too fast (2x as fast as the Olay) which makes the sponge attachment tug at the skin and the brush way too exfoliating - did not even try it on my face with the face brush because with the speed and bristles on the body brush it was really scratchy on my body (face brush felt same as body brush). Update**** I am giving the Olay Pro X one more star because the results are similar to the Clarisonic Mia with the clarisonic's sensitive head brush. After using the clarisonic mia w/sensitive head for 3 months my skin started getting congested again (like with the Pro X). My skin did not get dull and used to the device like it did with the Pro X. I purchased the deep pore head for the MIa and have used that exclusively for almost 6 months now. This head is much gentler than the sensitive one (kinda scratchy) and keeps my pores cleaner for longer and the CLARISONIC MIA WITH DEEP PORE HEAD GOT RID OF ALL THE UNDER THE SKIN SMALL FLESH COLORED BUMPS on my skin once I worked up to using it 2x a day. I prefer the Clarisonic Mia with the deep pore head brush and admit that I never reach for the Pro X (gave to my sister) or the DDF Revolve (kept for myself but the clarisonic is doing such a good job that I have not needed it).
