Mascara -BeneFit Cosmetics - They're Real
amy_singhs 5/25/2013 4:41:00 PM
So I got this free from Sephora for the annual birthday gift in a mini size. I don't go high end with much makeup, and with SO many mascaras out there, there's no need to spend a lot. This retails for $29CAD for the regular size and I don't think I've ever spent more than $12 on a mascara (and I find that high). But dammit, I like this. It could provide a little more thickness, but it really defines my lashes, which are fairly long but super fine, so you can't tell when they're bare. This really does make me think, "wow, they're real!", providing a nice, evenly-coated flare. The tip of the brush has kind of a spiky ball on it, which I don't use since it seems like it would place too much product on the lashes, but there's a video on the Benefit website showing you the technique to use. I'll give it a shot tonight. If I find this lasts me 3 months, which is how often I replace mascara, I might spend $12 on the mini size...a splurge for me! **UPDATE**: I followed the tip on the site to first coat the tops of the lashes before applying as normal. Won't do that again as it gave me clumped, spidery lashes that I just couldn't separate or fix. But I sill like it when applied normally so my rating won't change.

Mascara -Maybelline - Volum Express The Falsies Flared
amy_singhs 5/25/2013 4:25:00 PM
Bought this without properly consulting MUA....needed a mascara, was overwhelmed, took my chances. I wanted to find something a little cheaper than my go-to, L'Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes.I like thick lashes and thought the brush would deliver, especially since I like curved brushes, but nope. Falsies? Apparently the name refers to its false claims, and not to any similarity to false lashes. Oh and it flakes. And the worst part: the smell! Like when a pen explodes or when red wine goes bad. I can smell it for a long time after I apply it. Might have to return to Beauty Tubes for a few extra bucks.

Cleansers -St. Ives - Clear Pore Cleanser [DISCONTINUED]
amy_singhs 5/25/2013 4:09:00 PM
This is discontinued but I found it at a Dollarama, so it must be still out there. Within 2 days I had dry flakes on the bridge of my nose and around my nostrils. Way too drying. I have normal to oily, breakout-prone skin, but the SLS in this was just too much. I'm moving away from stripping cleansers altogether since they just make my skin imbalanced and messy. Might work for super oily types. Nice scent, nice feel, great price, but I'll never use it again.

Mascara -New York Color - Maximum Boost Volumizing Mascara
amy_singhs 1/29/2009 7:28:00 AM
As soon as I saw the brush I knew this was not going to be what I wanted it to be. Takes way too much work to get any volume. Plus by the end of the day it's smudged on my bottom lids...and I don't wear it on my bottom lashes. Might be inexpensive but still a waste of money since I'll be replacing it asap.

Top/Base Coats -New York Color - Extra Shiny Top Coat

Going in the garbage. Ruined my paint job.....encouraged it to come right off. Didn't last even a day.

Powder -Cover Girl - TruBlend Minerals Pressed Mineral Foundation [DISCONTINUED]
amy_singhs 5/12/2008 6:34:00 PM
I love a good powder foundation...it's the easiest, quickest way to get a flawless face. I bought #1, Ivory. It's too light but I use it under my eyes and around my nose and mouth where I want to lighten. I considered getting #2, but I think it may be too dark...it's a strange leap in shades. The main reason I don't like it, is I get oily really quickly..I almost think it's made my skin oilier, not sure why. I can touch my face and it comes right off, I can see it on my finger. And it's been settling into my smile lines. A powder should not do this! There should be a mirror, and the brush is useless. I've been using a wedge sponge. The quest for a powder that covers, stays put, and doesn't break me out continues. I take all suggestions!

Shampoo -Pantene - Smooth and Sleek shampoo
amy_singhs 11/4/2006 11:28:00 AM
I got a great deal on this: on clearance for 3 bucks with a bonus conditioner. Definitely would not pay full price though. I switched to this after my Redken Smooth Down ran out and from then on my hair has been oilier at the roots than it ever was. Still not sure if it's the shampoo or the conditioner that's doing it, but since I don't put conditioner at my roots i guess it's the shampoo. Hopefully the same deal I got on Ice Shine won't disappoint.

Cleansers -Neutrogena - All-in-One Makeup Removing Cleansing Lotion
amy_singhs 11/8/2004 2:36:00 PM
I hate to be the one to bring the average down, but this does not live up to its name. I'm currently on Accutane so my face is super-dry. I wanted a non-drying cleanser that would still remove all my make-up. I bought it because of the positive reviews; one person even said it took off her Revlon Colorstay. I don't even use long-wearing makeup and this cleanser left a lot behind...more than one cotton pad would remove with toner. I'm returning it tomorrow.

Mascara -Cover Girl - Fantastic Lash [DISCONTINUED]
amy_singhs 10/5/2004 5:49:00 PM
Nice results with this mascara: dramatic is what I like. I would like it better with a curved brush, though. The tube is fat and can stand up on its own, so it feels like there's a lot of product. I think it's very cute but a little bulky in the m/u bag. Give this a try if you want thick, rich lashes.

Mascara -Maybelline - Full 'N Soft Mascara
amy_singhs 10/5/2004 5:42:00 PM
I've been wanting to try this for a long time, and after doing so, I can't hop on the F 'n S bandwagon. Not as good as MF 2000 Calorie or CG Fantastic Lash. If I don't work really hard then my lashes end up sticking together. I can get a semi-full look, but whatever makes the formula "soft" prevents them from getting nice and dramatic, which is what I like. In general I prefer the results curved brushes give me and this isn't available w/ a curved brush in Canada, so maybe I'll try using my 2000 Calorie brush. If the curved brush comes here, then I'll try it, otherwise I won't repurchase.

Cleansers -Freeman - Pure Bliss Creamy Face Wash
amy_singhs 6/24/2004 6:50:00 PM
This cleanser was exactly what I was looking for in terms of texture: thick and creamy with a great lather that removed all of my makeup and rinsed completely clean. But the scent is just TOO pungent. It smells like pot pourri! It stings my eyes pretty much every time I use it, and if it gets in my nose it's painful! If you're not sensitive to scents and you want a cleanser with the formula I described above, this is a good option, especially at $3 Canadian. I have a basically full bottle up for swap if anyone's interested!

Crème -Clinique - City Stick [DISCONTINUED]
amy_singhs 3/17/2004 10:20:00 PM
I ended up buying this after the girl at the counter said I would hate Dewy Smooth (which I intended to buy b/c of its SPF). I said I was prone to breakouts and was concerned that the ingredients that keep the product in a stick form would break me out. Plus, I've tried cream-to-powder products and thay've all accentuated dry spots. But she was my age (24), with oily skin like me, and said this was the first foundation she ever used. Plus, Ivory Twist was a perfect match. Anyway, I am pleased to report that I didn't waste my money. The texture is unlike what I expected a stick foundation to be...it's oil-free but has a silky-smooth texture that glides and blends beautifully. It's sheer coverage but I find it lasts longer than the Almay Kinetin I was using before. Plus I'm getting my sun protection in! Perfect for travel as well, which I do a lot of. The only downside is that I can't wear it under the eyes, as it tends to crease and accentuate some annoying little bumps I have there. I don't normally spend that much on makeup ($28 CAD) and when I run out I might see if there's a comparable product for less, but I would repurchase this again. Oh yeah, most importantly, no breakouts!

Mascara -Maybelline - Wonder Curl Mascara [DISCONTINUED]
amy_singhs 2/25/2004 10:44:00 PM
Bought this because it was on sale and i have liked Maybelline mascaras in the past. Did pretty much nothing! I think it's the only time I didn't use a mascara for a full 3 months before starting a new one. Just not good enough to stick it out!

Mascara -Max Factor - 2000 Calorie Mascara
amy_singhs 2/25/2004 10:06:00 PM
This is the only mascara that I've ever bought twice in a row. The first time I got black-brown and really liked it. It's a drier formula than most mascaras, which allowed for a cleaner application, and ability to build on itself. So when it ran out I decided I wanted to go back to black. But it's just not as good for some reason...definitelty flakes more, and my lashes are "falling" by mid-day. Had I used the black first, I wouldn't have bought it a second time. Don't know what accounts for the differences...but the search continues!

Treatments -Neutrogena - Night time pore clarifying gel
amy_singhs 1/13/2004 5:59:00 PM
After searching Paula's book for a decent BHA I thought I would give this one a try. It's virtually scent-free and the clear formula seems to disappear into the skin, but it really didn't do much. Maybe it kept my skin clearer than if I hadn't used anything at all, but it certainly didn't keep me blemish-free. My problem area of the moment is my forehead, which never seemed to clear up. Paula says the pH level is borderline, so I guess I'll just have to keep searching for one that's just right.
