Hair -Philosophy - Shear Splendor Restorative Hair Marinade
WhoKnew101 4/21/2009 11:15:00 AM
Goes on just like Carrot Oil. If you go to the hair aisle in walmart, or wherever, and look where they have some of the products for African American hair like the Olive Oil brands, you'll find Hollywood Beauty Carrot Oil.(I'm not sure whether Carrot Oil targets any ethnicity, but it is very light and washes out of my very fine blonde hair). Looks the same, has even better ingredients than the Shear Splendor (compare the ingredient lists and see), and you get a big bottle of it for like $5-6 (probably twice as much for 1/4th the price). That product is far superior to this stuff, and if you want you can pour the cheapo stuff into the Philosophy bottle and no one would ever know. (same color, same viscosity, better results with the Carrot Oil). Monoi or even regular old kitchen olive oil works better, in my opinion, than either of the above, but olive oil smells like dipping oil or a salad on my head, whereas these other oils smell much prettier :) As others have mentioned, if you do hair oiling where you put in a bunch and let it sit til you shampoo, you CANNOT plan on leaving the house because your hair will look wet from oil and give new definition to the term "greaseball" lol. If you just use a tiny dot as a smooth product post shower, that's a different story, tho

Blush -BeneFit Cosmetics - Posietint
WhoKnew101 4/21/2009 10:38:00 AM
Love love love this stuff. I am a fair neutral tone (BE 1.2 or summer bisque if i'm "tan"). Regular Benetint is too purple-y for me, it shows up kind of a medium eggplant hue on me. But I love tints and stains. Until the last year, for whatever reason, most of the stains were the same purple-ish family and just didn't work for my skin as much as I wanted them to. I've tried other stains (lips or cheeks) and some were okay, none were perfect. Benefit Posietint is PERFECT. It is girly-pink, not so unlike the pink on these MUA borders, but blends lighter or builds up. The brush it comes with is ABSOLUTELY USELESS. It's a nail polish type brush, and for the life of me I just end up with a blotch when i use it. If i had to use it with just that brush, I'd give this product a 2 or less, because while beautiful it would be impossible to use with any success. Instead, what I do is take a larger flat taklon brush, and brush the brush (wipe the taklon brush on the nail polish brush to pick up some tint). I then dab something plastic* to even out the tint on the taklon brush (for instance, I usually swipe the taklon on the side of a bath dixie cup), just sort of swiping and picking the tint back up, on the taklon, evenly). Only then do I swipe the taklon brush on my cheeks, building up as needed with whatever product is then on the head of the brush or the cup, and then blend with the taklon when done. It sounds like a pain, but it's actually not, it takes an extra 5 seconds, and applies perfectly and even. You can apply where you want it, smoothly, and with accuracy (not just a rub and a smudge). It gives me a pink natural glow that is natural-but-better. It is bubble-gum pink, but doesn't look visibly bright pink on your skin, just looks so natural, pretty, but visible on paler skin. You can build the color up to be as visible as you want it to be. I don't have the patience nor time to build up the color for lip use, but it would work well for that otherwise. Using as described above, I've used up a bottle in 2-3 months, which is faster than i expected, but does illustrate how usable this product is once you find an alternative application method. (I also tried using a foundation sponge to apply. That worked better than the nailpolish type brush, but not as well as the taklon, and absorbed a lot of pricey product in the process..) Packing got 3 lippies because of the terrible brush. I have used this successfully on top of regular foundation and also on top of MMU foundation. If you apply it with a heavier hand on bare skin, and use your MMU foundation on TOP of the tint, it looks great too. *You COULD pick some tint up on your taklon, and swipe it on the back of your hand to even the amount on the head, but: 1) it's tint, so you'll end up with a stain of pink on the back of your hand and 2) you will "lose" a lot of product that way.. with swiping it on the plastic, it doesn't absorb any of the product, and I can go back and pick the rest of it up on a second swipe. (hope that makes sense)

Hair Styling Tools -Goody - Styling therapy Jojoba oil hair brush
WhoKnew101 4/21/2009 10:24:00 AM
I bought this half off at Walgreens a month or so ago. It's lightweight. As other reviewers have said, it doesn't have bulbs at the end, so it doesn't scratch. It also doesn't penetrate into too much hair, the bristles are flimsy so if you have thick hair you'll probably need to brush it in layers. I am rating this middle of the road. You can't use it for (heat) styling of any sort, so it only pretty much works as a finishing brush. It functions pretty good as a brush (except for the flimsy bristles not getting through thick hair). On the other hand, that makes it very gentle on your hair. It seems to work decent at preventing static. I really don't notice an improvement or change as far as the jojoba infusion goes, though. My hair is very fine and I don't notice any signs of conditioning, so if it is oil-ing, then it is very very very subtle. If this were a bit smaller, or in comb or pick format, it would be better, as I think this product would work best in a travel format, so if you're out and your convertible or the wind or the heat frazzle your hair by the time to get to the ladies room, this would probably smooth it down without weighing it down. But for home use, I will continue to use it but would not repurchase, esp at the full retail price. But it's worth a try, it's not a waste of money, just not some life-changing invention, at least for me..

Fragrances -Clean - Fresh Laundry EDP
WhoKnew101 7/4/2007 4:07:00 PM
"How many perfumes do you need that smell like soap?" asked my bf.. Hahahahahahahahaha.. silly man!! Of course I need as many as smell good! :) I got this in the HSN special buy. I really liked it. Wore it for a week before I realized I already owned a knock-off of it.. (woops, guess I do have a lot of soap perfumes!).. I really like Fresh Laundry for freshening dry cleaning and my sofa cushions and stuff. It smells just like fabric softener. However, I can buy a jug of Downy and dilute it for 1/100000th the price. I think the whole Clean line is overpriced. So for that, I take off a lippie and wouldn't buy again. Great smell, though.. But there are less pricey ways to smell identical.

Fragrances -Clean - Fresh Laundry Body Lotion

I got the HSN tsv and this came with. The lotion smelled chemically- and sour - and not at all like the perfume. I would not repurchase the lotion.

Highlighters -La Bella Donna - Luminere
WhoKnew101 7/4/2007 3:57:00 PM
I got this in the Allure beauty box 2007. At first it went on a la Disco 1977.. but with a lighter hand, it was like Clear Radiance (bare escentuals) just deeper. I found it gave a healthy dimension to my normally flat mmu. I LOVE LOVE LOVED it brushed on my decollete and shoulders. Unfortunately, i started getting breakouts from it. I looked at the ingredients and sure enough, it contains silicones. Silicones always make me break out. I had to give it away. If it hadn't made me breakout, i would have really liked it for cleavage and shoulders and forehead glow..

Cleansers -BeneFit Cosmetics - Not on My Pillow Makeup Remover
WhoKnew101 1/21/2007 4:35:00 PM
I am terrible about washing my face before bed and I don't like getting my face wet. I wear mineral makeup which isn't bad for your skin, but also doesn't wash off easily. This liquid takes it off pretty well. (my follow up with a washcloth still showed a little mmu, but that might have been areas i didn't swipe). It is not stinging like SeaBreeze/alcohol but works better than witch hazel. It is not trying, but not moisturizing either. Didn't leave a film. I follow up with a wet washcloth rather than rinsing. I do not like that it doesn't get my eye makeup off. (Says not for eye area AND it doesn't remove it anyway). I guess that's the tradeoff for it being non oily or nondrying.. I would buy again unless it makes me breakout.

Lipstick -NARS - Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama
WhoKnew101 1/21/2007 4:26:00 PM
For some reason, the Sephora tester looked more cinnamon than the one I brought home. Bahama is a mauve-brown nude on me (dusty pink maybe, but not a pink-pink). Everything everyone has written about this is true, both good and bad! It IS smooth, which is good but also I find that creamy pencils tend to not last long - so I am not sure how long this will last. It IS matte, but not drying on my lips. It looks very natural, but it IS more mauve on my skintone (BE 1.2). It is darker than I expected on. Blotted it looks like my lips but darker. Unblotted it is too dark and brown, I would need to put a pink gloss on top to lighten it up. I am pleased with the product (creamy, no taste or smell, wears well, just a light powder type of feeling). I may learn to love the color. It is a deep nude. I agree that the price is way too high unless it becomes my HG. I've bought similiar chubby lip pencils for <$10.

Fragrances -Sugar Cosmetics - Sugar Makes The Heart Grow Fonder
WhoKnew101 1/21/2007 4:05:00 PM
I tend to like clean scents or citrus scents like Clean, Philosophy's Graces, Fresh's Sugar line, Maybe Baby, etc. (unless I am in a suit, then I like something less wholesome (like Chanel Allure)). The Sugar Makes the Heart Grow Fonder (SMTHGF) parfum was in the Sugar Cosmetics section, not the perfume section of Sephora, so I didn't even notice it. My 8 year old came over smelling delicious and I asked what he had been spraying and he brought me Sugar Makes the Heart Grow Fonder. I do not like Aquolina's Pink Sugar which I think smells TOO much like cotton candy. SMTHGF smells sweet like that, but does not smell like I spent all day working at the fair. I think it is 60% young girl scent but the vanilla and musk notes makes it more sophisticated. (I never wear musks, but I like the musk in this scent). I am mid thirties and it seems ALMOST too childish but at the same time delicious. It smells good enough to eat, but you can't exactly say what it smells like.. just sweet and vanilla and floral. Like a bath and sugar cereal. I have gotten several compliments on this. It fades to my nose when I'm wearing it, so it's hard to gauge how long others can smell it. I think it's sweet and delicious. I like the atomizer, but it does leak (leak upwards, oddly). I have tried tightening it more, if that doesn't work, i will transfer it to another container so it doesn't evaporate..

Concealers -BeneFit Cosmetics - Galactic Shield [DISCONTINUED]
WhoKnew101 2/27/2006 6:31:00 PM
Most concealers slide right off my skin after about an hour. Or they are so drying that they draw attention to what I'm trying to conceal. Galactic Shield does a great job of concealing AND staying put. The fine tip is excellent for covering JUST the red area and not the surrounding area, so to better disguise a breakout. Topped with a little powder and it makes breakout invisible, and helps them heal. Love this stuff. I agree that it's way overpriced, but for me, worth it. I am a BE 1.2 (fairly light skin) and the 01 Fair shade is a great match.

Fragrances -Clean - Sweet Layer
WhoKnew101 9/12/2005 6:44:00 PM
I was expecting to LOVE this, so I bought a full size on ebay.. To me, it smells like Orange Power cleaner or 409 or something. NO way is it worth the money, when you can buy orange cleaner and spray it on your wrists for far less!! I don't think it's sweet at all, i'd define it as tang-y.
