Mascara -Maybelline - Volum' Express Colossal Cat Eyes

I'm new with this whole makeup-mascara-telling-the-difference-between-all-these-brands kind of thing. I saw the wand of this beast, and I decided to try it out. Now, my review isn't solid since I'm hesitant of it myself. It does infact give me the cat eye effect, due to my almond shaped eyes, but alas, it has a rather funny smell and when I wash it off (isn't waterproof), it burns my eyes? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I'd love if someone contacted me (if that's possible? I'm new here) and advised me on what to do (:
