Lipstick -Wet 'n' Wild - Silk Finish Lipstick in 508A Black Orchid
Lippyloo 9/29/2006 7:06:00 PM
I have fun with the concept that you can get a decent lipstick for $1. You really can, if it's Wet 'n' Wild! (They probably sell their products more "at cost" than dept. store brands w/shi-shi packaging, and make their money off the fact that most women buy more than one!) Black Orchid is by far my fave Silk Finish shade. It's similar to Clinique's Black Honey in that it looks almost black in the tube, but applies as a neutral (not purple or fuchsia) berry-brown. Clinique's version has a touch more red, but I can do a pretty good Black Honey impression by applying my w-n-w lippie lightly over a clear balm. This is a versatile and often-used shade in my collection. Smells perfumy but not gaggingly so; lasting power is average for a non-matte lippie. Don't be scared by the dark shade in the tube- this color is magically versatile!

Blush -Maybelline - Dream Mousse Blush - All colors [DISCONTINUED]
Lippyloo 9/29/2006 5:21:00 PM
Aauuugh, I *so* wanted to like this because it's an oil-free version of cream blush, and the texture is ideal for creating a soft, natural look. However, Cloud Wine is the deepest shade they sell and I still couldn't get it to show on my skin! I'm a PPP (usually use the Ivory shade in a foundation line) and kept adding more of the mousse to my cheek hoping to create an autumnal plum glow... but it just kept disappearing. Finally, by applying huge globs, I got the color to show up, but by that point it was all over my face and dripping off. I have moderately oily skin but used powder before applying. I just don't get this product. It needs about 200% more pigment.

Eye Shadow -Maybelline - Shadow Stylist in Sophisticated Wine
Lippyloo 9/29/2006 5:13:00 PM
I was a bit leery of this product since Roller Color was such an awful mess to apply- but Maybelline has perfected the application of loose shadow powder! The packaging is cute and lightweight- it looks like a bottle of liquid liner- but when you pull out the applicator, it's a sponge tip covered with just the right amount of shadow! I was drawn to this shade because I like deep roses and plums to set off my golden-brown eyes. Sophisticated Wine is a deep cool rose with gold pearlescence. A really beautiful color for PPPs- would really set off green eyes- but I'm not sure if it would show on darker complexions (it's lighter than the packaging indicates). Lasting power is about 8 hours (I use oil-free concealer as a shadow base) and the product does migrate upward as the hours pass, but it's still pretty. I did notice a slight problem with excess powder falling onto my cheeks and lashes; the problem disappeared once I learned to tap the applicator against the bottle before applying.

Lip Treatments -Carmex - CHERRY Click-Stick
Lippyloo 9/26/2006 8:01:00 PM
I am a huge Carmex fan, have used the medicinal yellow goo for 25 years, so I was really excited when the company came out with a scent other than "menthol/paint thinner". The Carmex website has a big hullaballoo over the two new flavors, Cherry and Strawberry. Neither, IMHO, are very appealing-- probably because the company left in the menthol/camphor/phenol and just put a fakey fruit flavor on top of it. Strawberry is marginally better than Cherry, which smells like a throat lozenge, but neither is the least bit yummy or natural-smelling. If you've smelled a Lip Smacker, imagine that crossed with Noxzema. On the plus side, I do like the cute "click-click" sound of the tube, and the actual product has the typical waxy emollient Carmex texture plus SPF15. It's a good balm, just not a girlie balm.

Lips -Maybelline - Wet Shine Lipstick in Cherry Rain
Lippyloo 9/14/2006 8:55:00 PM
I was really surprised by the opacity and matte-ness of this color compared to the other WetShine lipsticks I've tried (Pink Topaz, Glowing Glimmer, Drippin' Honey). This is not a true red; it's a VERY blue-toned red bordering on hot pink/magenta; reminds me of Revlon Cherries in the Snow. It is very, very bright and quite stunning if you're into that kind of shade. While it isn't any shinier than any other lipstick, it is very moist and spreadable in texture and can be used as a stain by rubbing in a small amount with fingers or lipbrush. It leaves a pink stain on lips after removal, so be warned about that. As with all WetShine lippies, the packaging is cheap and flimsy. Still, this is a fun color!

Lip Gloss -NARS - Lip Lacquer in Chastity
Lippyloo 9/8/2006 8:19:00 PM
I got this as a gift; it came with another Lip Lacquer (Baby Doll) and a lipbrush. I love the minimalist NARS packaging, but this product is a dud for me. It's a very cool silvery pale mauve that just doesn't work for this yellow-toned PPP. It seems to suck color from my face instead of adding to it. I think this just doesn't work on warm skin tones. Some deeper mauves do, espcially if they have a touch of brown, but this is just pale, frosty, and makes me look dead. Plus, the NARS lacquers all smell like wet sheep. I gave it two lippies because it is a very thick and long lasting gloss.

Lip Gloss -Wet 'n' Wild - MegaSlicks Lip Gloss in #568 Bronze Berry
Lippyloo 9/7/2006 11:41:00 PM
Yes, I read Allure too, and would sure rather pop for a $2 lipgloss than for one of the $100 face creams they tout. I'm underwhelmed by this gloss. I gave it two lippies because at least the *texture* is nice: liquid-lipstick opacity, nice and moisturizing, doesn't bleed. But the rose-gold-brown shade in the tube turns much lighter and frostier on the lips. I'm very pale and need a lip color with some depth; this color promised to be a soft rosy nude and instead turned frosty white. And the smell is pretty horrendous. W'n'W used this same scent 20 years ago, when I was in high school. It was kind of cool in the '80s, when cloying fragrance was all the rage... but now? BLECH

Lipstick -Revlon - Colorstay Soft and Smooth lipstick
Lippyloo 8/14/2006 10:57:00 AM
Since Revlon d/c'd the old Colorstay (in the slim black tube) just as they were introducing this product, I take it that Soft & Smooth is supposed to be an improved version of the old Colorstay. And you know? I think it is! Of course, packaging always deceives; Halle Berry's lips look downright glossy in the store display, but the actual product is matte and somewhat dry-feeling. Unlike the super-matte, parching sensation of the old Colorstay lipcolor, this is slightly sticky and feels like it bends with your lips. Still, it is silicone-based, not oil-based like traditional lippies, so there's no creaminess or shine. I got it in "Sheer Plum," a beautiful frosted beet-red that goes on light purple. It looks like a popsicle stain. I wear it with Colorstay lipliner for a more defined, opaque look. There is minimal transfer to glasses, clothes, etc., esp. after the first 5 minutes. It lasts about 4 hours, which is really all you can hope for since most of us eat every four hours or so!

Lip Gloss -Jordana - InColor Lip Jelly Juicy Tints in Berry Wine
Lippyloo 7/20/2006 12:43:00 AM
At 2 for $3, less than the price of a Frappuccino, why not pop for a couple of Jordana's new lip products? I ended up with four of 'em, and this is by far my favorite. It's a liquid-shiny, lanolin-based pot gloss that is slick rather than sticky, and looks like a pretty stain when applied with the fingers (i.e., it's very easy to blend). Berry Wine is a deep wine-red with gold shimmer, and it's more pigmented than the other shades in this line. I'm a yellow-toned, auburn-haired PPP and I really like the shimmering, autumnal look this gives. It's just so effortless to apply. My only gripe is the scent-- neither like berries nor like wine, just sort of a cloying, artificial "fruit" smell.

Lipstick -Maybelline - Forever Metallics-Berry Bronze
Lippyloo 7/7/2006 11:38:00 PM
My favorite Walgreens had the Forever Metallics line on clearance for $1.79, so I popped for Berry Bronze. The shade name is puzzling, as it's a cool-toned vivid purple-pink with no trace of either berry or bronze. I would not describe it as fuchsia, as that suggests more red and less purple. The weird thing is that when I wipe this off my lips, the tissue shows a bronze undertone, but not a hint of that bronze shows up on my lips! It's like invisible ink that you need a special decoder to see. I have to say, although this is not the most flattering shade on me, it is really pretty if you're into bright tropical colors. The formula is really nice (lasts several hours, feels moisturizing, wears off evenly, creates a defined & opaque lip) and I just *adore* the cute metallic packaging. It manages to look futuristic and '80s-esque at the same time, the perfect complement to an unusual color.

Eyeliner -Maybelline - Ultra Liner Waterproof
Lippyloo 6/30/2006 11:18:00 PM
I love liquid eyeliner, so have become a connoisseur. And really, Maybelline's is just as good as NARS, in my opinion. I can just put it on and forget about it all day and night... and into the next morning if I forget to wash my face! I got this in Taupe, sort of a medium-to-dark brown, for 25 cents on clearance, so maybe they are discontinuing this shade. Can't say the packaging is real inspiring, but the brush works well for me in tracing a thin or thick line at the base of upper lashes.

Lipstick -Almay - Truly Lasting Color
Lippyloo 6/30/2006 11:14:00 PM
I've increasingly gravitated to no-transfer lipcolor since having my daughter, and this formula is the best-- the color feels the lightest and goes on sheerly, the gloss is surprisingly long-lasting and pleasantly creamy, and the double-ended packaging is sleek and practical. Like all longwear color, this will wear off around the inner lips if you eat anything containing oil. But unlike most longwear color, it's fairly simple to reapply the color where needed without getting too flaky and opaque. So why didn't I give this 5 lippies? The color selection SUCKS and the package color is inaccurate. "Truly Raspberry," which the packaging suggests is a bright magenta-red, is actually just medium rosy-pink. And "Truly Latte," which appears to be a deepish neutral brown, is actually a cool, frosty mauve-beige that makes me look like I need a mortician. Almay needs to break out of its "no-nonsense," overly clinical image and give us some bolder colors! The line contains no true red, for example.
