Moisturizers -The Body Shop - Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream
rated 1 of 5

Again, as with the seaweed cleanser, this is too fragranced for sensitive skin! And for oil absorbing properties...look elsewhere, because this controlled nothing. Overall, this TBS skincare line is way overpriced drugstore-quality facial care, and way better items can be found. At least it can always be returned for a refund, so I wasn't out any $$.

Cleansers -The Body Shop - Seaweed Deep Cleansing Facial Wash
rated 1 of 5

Ouch - not for skin sensitive to fragrance. I used it for two weeks, and like most TBS skincare, it was too fragranced for my skin. In addition, I have no idea why the hell they call it seaweed cleanser, especially when the bladderwrack powder is in such minute quantities (yes, it comes AFTER preservatives in the list of ingredients). Needless to say, my skin was red, itchy, bumpy and irritated, so this went back PRONTO! The only good thing about it is that unlike their previous oily skin line (cucumber milk) they left the waxy lanolin out of it.

Candles -Yankee Candles - Yankee Candles
rated 5 of 5
ChaniMarie 7/11/2003 10:36:00 PM

I love Yankee products...I have the vanilla cream housewarmer candle, various votives and tarts. The fragrance that I'm stuck on is cucumber canteloupe. I don't usually love melon scents, but this one is perfect, balanced with cucumber. My only complaint is that the tarts are often crumbled when I buy them, and there isn't much of a selection where I live.

Blush -Maybelline - Brush Blush (In General)
rated 1 of 5

I'm not in the majority here, but Maybelline Brush Blush blew big time. I bought Plushed Plum, and I love the colour in the packaging, but on my skin it hardly shows up! I can't build any kind of intensity at all! What a pity, because the colour is so nice, and I'll probably have a hard time trying to match it with another brand.

Makeup Brushes -Unlisted Brand - Simply Basic

I have to agree on the quality of SB brushes. I got the 8 piece set for 8$ Canadian, and I love them. They're so much cheaper than TBS brushes and they're just as good. Who says you get what you pay for? For a rock bottom price, I got a complete set of great brushes! I will be rebuying these in the future!

Lipstick -Rimmel - Sheer Temptation Lipstick
rated 4 of 5
ChaniMarie 7/9/2003 2:47:00 AM

Mmmm, I love this lipstick. After being disappointed with Almay's Pure Tints, which were lipsticks, not sheer tints, I tried Sheer Temptation in Temptress, a nice pinky colour that doesn't look too dark (like most berry lipsticks)or like Pepto Bismol. Sheer Temptation was sheer, but not as much as I had hoped (I only want a hint of colour, I don't really care about reapplying), but it is the best I've tried so far. Layering over clear gloss gives me the impact I want. Cheap, ok packaging, nice colour for my skintone, readily available, swift application, nice creamy texture, overall a very nice lipstick. I just wish that the other pink colours worked better for me. I will definately rebuy this little gem! My only big complaint about it is the watermelon scent, I can live with it, but it's not my all time favorite.

Masks -Unlisted Brand - Aspirin Mask
rated 4 of 5
ChaniMarie 7/6/2003 10:29:00 PM

A little history - no one "invented" aspirin. It has been used for ages the world over, as acetylsalycyclic acid comes from willow bark, poplar bark and buds. For my face, the aspirin mask is excellent, and it boosts the effectiveness of BP when I apply it afterwards. I've also been using it as a "toner" (mix w/ water, apply, let dry, then brush off all the little particles)until I get PC 2% salycylic acid liquid. A little wierd maybe, but it does work :)

Mascara -Maybelline - Great Lash Mascara
rated 1 of 5
ChaniMarie 7/4/2003 1:12:00 AM

To add my own redundant remarks about this utterly horrid mascara... I hated it. It was dry, flakey and brittle, but kind of tacky at the same time. It was so gross to have it on my lashes. It felt like gooey swamp water with Sahara sand mixed in it. It was clumpy, it smudged big time, and it looked slutty. I've obviously been on a different planet b/c I've only heard this hyped up a couple of times, but then I'm not a faithful mag reader, either. Next time you want to look like a crack whore, practically clawing at your lashes because they feel so horrible, this is the buy for you. I only wish it were possible to give zero lippies for a product! This one would be one of the few that should not even be rated! I think that some chemist should be drawn and quartered for creating such a CRAPPY mascara.

Mascara -Rimmel - Exaggerate mascara
rated 4 of 5
ChaniMarie 6/28/2003 8:56:00 PM

After using Maybelline Great Lash, I was frustrated with mascara, and tired of dry, flaky, smudgy, clumpy lash make up. It felt slutty and looked even worse. I decided to try Rimmel Exaggerate and I am happy with my choice!! Exaggerate makes my lashes look longer, and they do not clump together. It feels good, and didn't make my lashes feel like a waxy, wiry brush. I got it for about $6 Cdn, along with 30mL of eye make up remover. The only drawback is that it smudges a bit, although not as badly as Great Lash. I will probably buy Exaggerate again.

Moisturizers -Almay - Kinetin Age Decelerating Daily Cream SPF 15
rated 4 of 5
ChaniMarie 6/28/2003 8:33:00 PM

Almay Age Decelerating Daily Cream is a fabulous moisturizer. The pricing wasn't incredibly steep, it was on sale for $28 Cdn at Shopper's Drug Mart. Compared to $34 at the body shop for essentialy the same thing, you get more product for your money (60mL vs about 40mL from TBS). Almay kinetin cream left a slight tingle for the first couple of days, but other than that, no serious reactions, which is surprising for such a rich cream. It left my skin smooth and I swear a bit more supple, and it has done wonders for dark spots left from hyper pigmentation from acne, as well as chemical burns from Neutrogena products. The only drawback is that my skin seems a bit more oiler later on in the day, more than normal, but it is easily remedied with some powder. I would recommend this product to almost anyone, and I will be buying it again! Edit: One of the ingredients listed is willow bark extract. If I remember my chemistry correctly, acetylsalicyclic acid (aspirin) and saliacylic acid (zit product)are both derivitaves from willow bark. I wonder if this has a disinfecting quality for acne prone skin, or does it have another effect?

Concealers -Almay - Skin-Smoothing Concealer with Kinetin SPF 10
rated 3 of 5
ChaniMarie 6/28/2003 8:08:00 PM

I bought the Almay Kinetin Concealer in medium. It is quite orange, and would not be suitable for untanned skin tones or lighter skin tones. For my summer tan, it matches ok. The concealer is nice and smooth, but it does not hide dark eye circles 100%. For minor blemishes or discolorations, it covers nicely. The brush is pretty much useless, you have to blend with fingers anyway, and it tends to overload on product. I don't know if I'll buy the concealer again. Rimmel Hide The Blemish works just as well, and is about $4 cheaper (about $6 compared to about $10 Cdn for the Kinetin concealer). An average product, but may be of some benefit for older skin.

Lip Treatments -Almay - Pure Tints Protective Lip Care
rated 2 of 5
ChaniMarie 6/28/2003 5:17:00 PM

I decided to try Pure Tints after seeing an ad. I thought it would be a perfect sheer gloss, with spf in it. Boy, was I ever disappointed! I bought mauve, and it was heavily colored, not at all glossy. It was WAY too expensive (it was 6.99$ Cdn at Shopper's Drug Mart)and it is a total waste of money. Plus, there is little product in the tube. Big time bust!! I will not be rebuying!

Lip Gloss -New York Color - Liquid Lip Shine in Cherrywood
rated 5 of 5
ChaniMarie 6/28/2003 4:17:00 PM

I absolutly love this color! Other colors in the liquid lip shine line were disappointing - Cappaccuino was a big bust - had little color, but lots of shine (it made me look like a '60s hooker). Cherrywood is now my alltime favorite lip color. Needs to be applied frequently, but at 2.99$ Cdn, anyone can afford it.
