Lipstick -MAC - Apres Chic
AnnaMaria 1/4/2013 4:58:00 PM
I agree with Spamela74 - MAC's Apres Chic Lipstick is THE highlight of the collection. It is a wonderful color that, I think, will work well for cool and warm-toned women. I am very cool-toned (and very fair), and it literally brightens up my complexion. It's a perfect winter shade because it goes well with the in-from-the-cold blush look, but this is a color that will work year round. When I first read the description, I thought for a moment of the LE Strawbaby (which I really liked), but I find Apres Chic so much more wearable that Strawbaby. And it is so moist -- a glossy lipstick. I love that because I'm not a big fan of glosses, but I like the look. I've already ordered a backup and ordered one for my Mom, too. She tried it (also a PPP, but warmer toned than I), and it looked great on her. I, like Spamela74, really hope MAC makes this one permanent. It's a keeper.

Polishes -Chanel - Rose Confidentiel
AnnaMaria 9/18/2011 5:25:00 PM
I'm a cool-toned PPP (NW10), pale with blue undertones and pink in my skin, and this polish works beautifully for me. It's a dusky rose with mauve tones in it, and the first day I wore it, I got a compliment on it within 30 minutes of leaving the house. I was buying cigars for a friend who just had a baby, and the SA said, "That nail polish is beautiful on you" and asked me what it was. That has only happened to me a handful of times with polish. I also get a lot of compliments with Nailtini's Pink Poodle, and Chanel Rose Confidentiel reminds me of Pink Poodle but it lasts longer (although it's slightly pricier). Rose Confidentiel is a little more muted, but they are in the same family. Very flattering for cool-toned PPPs. And very professional. They are colors that work well for work.
This is the first picture I've ever taken of my nails, so it doesn't fully do the color justice. Plus I wasn't planning on taking a picture so I didn't devote a lot of time to painting my nails. But this polish applies so easily and is not at all streaky. I do find have to touch it up a little every couple of days (on the tips of my nails but not my toes). I love this color and hope Chanel keeps making it. The wear of this is decent -- much better than OPI, Essie and slightly better than Nailtini. It is not as good as Rescue Beauty Lounge but few polishes are. RBL polishes hold up SO well on me, but sadly she hasn't made a shade like this. If RBL would, I would stock up. For some reason I can't get the picture to post in my review. :( But it is in my profile.

Polishes -Rescue Beauty Lounge - Grunge
AnnaMaria 9/14/2011 1:47:00 PM
NOTE: There were two places to post a review for Grunge, so I'm posting the same review in both places. Grunge rocks! It is such a professional understated color. It's name doesn't match that. I'm 43, and I find it very professional and classic. Depending on how much light I have on it and how the light shines on it, it's a lilac-tinged beige. But somethings it looks more grey-beige. It's great on my cool-toned PPP (NW10) skin. And RBL polishes, although pricey, are WONDERFUL because they apply so much more even than other polishes and wear so much better -- so much longer without chipping. They are a dream. I have purchased Smitten (too pepto for me -- doesn't work for me so I'll wear it as a base), Bruised (which works surprisingly well for me -- both on toes and fingers), Grunge (my favorite because it is foolproof and professional) and an opaque pale pink shade (misplaced the bottle, can't recall the name, that I thought would work SO well for me but did NOT work well with my cool skin toned and just didn't wear right). So after that pale pink didn't work, I decided to try Grunge, and it is FABULOUS. I see it working beautifully on all ages and for all occasions. It's unique (to me at least). Get it before RBL stops making it (which they tend to do way too often on all their shades).

Blush -Laura Mercier - Blushing Tint
AnnaMaria 6/28/2011 10:01:00 PM
I recently rediscovered my Blushing Tint in my blush collection, which reminded me how lovely it is. I had just swapped for Filtered Brown, and that caused me to reach for Blushing Tint in my stash even though I hadn't used it in a couple of years. (I have it in the old container with the matte flat lid with "Laura Mercier" embossed on the lid. Since then she's updated the packaging to include a shiny curved lid with no embossment). I now have Blushing Tint, Filtered Brown and Apricot Face Tint -- all three that Laura Mercier made. I'm sad she discontinued these, but one little container will last forever so I'm stocked for years. I don't know if her loose mineral blushes were meant to replace these, but I assume they are. I love Blushing Tint, Filtered Brown and the Apricot Face Tint -- all of which work really well (with light application) on my NW10, cool-toned PPP 43-year-old skin. I'm going to go ahead and address all three in this one review. I never thought Filtered Brown would work for cool-toned fair me, but when I got a swap request, I decided it was worth trying (after reading all the raves on MUA :). And I'm so glad I got it. It warms up my pale skin but not in a fake way. Light touch is key for me. I use my MAC 188 skunk brush or my NARS Yachiyo to apply these. I tend to put a little in the lid and swirl it into the brush and then depost it lightly on my cheeks and blend. So after getting Filtered Brown I started using my Blushing again. I'm wearing it today. It looks really natural. I would have thought all three of these would be too warm for me, but they somehow. This gives a natural flush. I'm wearing it with a purple shirt today, and I usually choose pink or lilac blushes when I wear purple, but this is working. This applies pinker than the brick red it looks like in the container (which is a good thing IMHO). I find these last well on my skin, too. My most recent addition is Apricot, the color I thought would least work for me. But it works well too. It warms up my skin, too, but in a different way than Filtered Brown. Filtered Brown gives me a natural blushed-bronze look (more blushed than bronze for me even though it looks brown in the pot), whereas Apricot gives me a rosier peachy brightness. As you can tell, I'm a fan of these. I would buy again, but one pot will last forever, although I'd swap for backups because I'm a fan and I've had my Blushing Tint for years and it works as well as the first day I used it. That's one of the beauties of powder products. Give these a chance if you have the opportunity because I see them working well on a lot of skin tones -- from light to medium (maybe not the darker tones) depending on how you apply them and the look you want.

Sunscreen -Ducray - Melascreen Creme Solaire SPF 50+
AnnaMaria 6/5/2011 5:25:00 PM
I love this sunscreen. I generally prefer physical sunblocks (with zinc oxide being my preference over titanium dioxide), and my derm feels the same, but this is my most favorite chemical screen. It has both Tinsorb M and S. It also has other chemical screens, but the Tinsorbs are why I love it so. Tinsorbs, which are sadly and foolishly not yet FDA approved and therefore not available in U.S. sunscreens, provide great stable and broad spectrum (UVA aging and UVB burning) protection. They are not broken down by makeup like the favorite U.S. broad spectrum screen avobenzone is. So you can wear this under makeup and under zinc oxide-based sunscreens with no destabilization problems. LOVE that. I use the Cream, the Emulsion and the Milk/Lotion. Love them all, but I have not detected a big difference between the three types. This is tacky feeling and, for me, that diminishes but never goes away (the entire day it has a tacky feel on my face), but I'm okay with that because it provides fabulous protection and it's not drying. I use foundation and a mattifying powder over it, but it's still tacky. But not in any way that bothers me. More in a way that makes me feel like it's not drying me out (which, as stated above, it doesn't). I even think it moisturizes some, which is rare in a sunscreen. Oily ladies, this is not for you IMHO (although the protection is), but normal and dry skin ladies should love it. I have been wearing it almost every day either on its own or under my Sofina. On days I don't wear it, I wear my Sofina. I always wear makeup over my suncreen, so this is a broad spectrum chemical sunscreen dream come true. Five lipsticks all the way. You can get it from Euro sites like Beautyplatinium, Tubotica, frenchcosmeticsforless, and more. Suncreen lovers and PPPs, I highly recommend it.

Eye Shadow -Burberry - No. 2 Trench
AnnaMaria 5/30/2011 3:04:00 PM
Oh my! This is so lovely. Who could not love this eyeshadow? I know I love it. It is as soft and creamy as butter. I usually wear it alone with liner and it makes me look alive. Like my eyes but a billion times better. This is amazing stuff IMHO. The only people I could see it not working as well for are darker ladies because it would stand out more, but in that case it would be more of a traditional shadow or a highlighter. I have to just say, in case I haven't made it clear, I totally adore this shade and this shadow (they are so wonderfully textured and wear amazingly well). :) It is pricey, but you get a lot of product (more so than with other shadows), and the packaging is fabulous. So elegant, plus I love the magnetic closure. I was deciding between this and Porcelain and went with this b/c I read that Porcelain has some gold shimmer in it. Trench is part of the Spring Collection from Burberry, which is FABULOUS. I have Trench and Rosewood shadows, Misty blush, and English Rose lipstick (all from this collection), and I love love love all of them. For reference, I'm a cool-toned PPP (NW10). Trench has become my go-to shadow for that polished, put together look -- that "I'm wearing no makeup but look amazing" look that most people (including me) can only get WITH makeup. :) Get this. I read the Spring Collection will be made part of the permanent collection, and I hope that is the case.

Powders -Guerlain - Meteorites powder for the face in Mythic 01
AnnaMaria 5/28/2011 7:52:00 PM
I cannot believe I have not reviewed these before. I adore them, so I assumed I had reviewed them. I'm NW10 (cool-toned PPP), and they work really well for me. They give a soft radiant look on my skin. One thing I love about these balls is that it is hard to over use them. I tend to over apply loose powders (I prefer loose powders to pressed -- I get a better effect with them). T. LeClerc Loose Powder and Mythic balls are my holy grails. With the Meteorites, I don't over apply (usually -- unless I start playing with them and then overuse them). The older I get, the more important NOT over applying product is IMHO. I started using these in my 30s and now, at 43, still love them. Because of my devotion to Mythic, I was concerned when they discontinued them. I'm one of those people who actually LIKES the cardboard packaging. I just swapped for the new Teint Rose, and they do indeed seem the same, but for the outer packaging. My concern about these has been the older I get, will they work as well. The answer, if my mother is any indication, is a RESOUNDING "yes!" When I was running low on a tub, I gave my mother the one I was running out of and got another. She was a little before 70 at the time (is now 72), and she loves them, too. Since then, I've ordered her her own full size. They look great on her. Not obvious, just soft and glowy. When they discontinued Mythic, it made me realize how much I do love this powder. I always thought Mythic would be the only one that would work for me with my coloring. And it is the best. But I've gotten others, including Pucci, the bee ones, the mini Pink Fresh (use as a blush), and, most recently, Beige Chic. And Beige Chic works REALLY well for me, too. Gives me a little warmth and pop of color. Like a pale bronzer. If you missed out on Mythic, get Teint Rose. They are the same, in the new packaging. And if Mythic works for you, Teint Rose will work as well. They claim Teint Rose is new and improved, so maybe they'll work better, but I do not see much difference in the two.

Eye Shadow -Burberry - Rosewood
AnnaMaria 5/23/2011 5:49:00 PM
I love this shadow. Cool-toned PPP ladies, GET THIS. It is wonderful. Laura Mercier Metallic Gold Cream Shadow has been my longtime holy grail, but this, too, is a holy grail -- only my second ever shadow HG. It's like a pinky taupe IMHO. It's definitely in the taupe family. I think this is permanent and not LE even though it's in the spring/summer collection. The spring/summer collection ROCKS. This, the Misty Blush, the English Rose Lip Cover -- all are fabulous for the cool-toned PPP woman. I swapped my first one of these to get a LE item I want. But I don't think I can live without this long because it is a wonderful color for me (NW10). It's silky with a buttery texture, applies beautifully, wears well, and lasts all day on me. You also get a lot of product in the package, which is good considering the price. I LOVE the packaging. Love the gunmetal look of it and the metallic clasp. Five lipsticks and will for sure rebuy.

Concealers -Bobbi Brown - Corrector
AnnaMaria 5/22/2011 6:33:00 PM
I love this corrector. It's one of my all time favorite Bobbi Brown products. It works as it is designed, and it works really well. It's highly pigmented, and you don't need a lot. This is one of those products that I use up (which means it's on a short list) and I have to repurchase quite regularly. I once misplaced (in a move) one and repurchased it and then I found it (after replacing it), so I asked my mother (who is a youthful 72) if she would like it. She said, "Of course. I love Bobbi Brown products." She would never buy it on her own because it's pricey for what you get and she doesn't splurge on herself, so I was glad she wanted it. I'm 43, and it works great for me, too. Great pigment (as stated before) but NOT drying like a lot of heavily pigmented products can be. I have repurchased this several times (I wish you got more product for the price) and will continue to do so. Once I decided I was going to go with other, cheaper corrector/concealer products (when I was down to just the sides of the pan on my corrector), but I realized just how much I reach for it and how nothing works better, so I restocked. I use a concealer brush to apply this or my fingers, depending on the coverage I want. I am NW10 (with sensitive, dry skin) and use (and love) Porcelain Bisque. It's a perfect shade for me.

Makeup Brushes -Guerlain - Meteorites Brush
AnnaMaria 5/22/2011 10:17:00 AM
Save your money, ladies, and buy a different brush instead. As a rule I adore/love/covet all things Guerlain, but this is an exception to my Guerlain rule. This brush is just not impressive for application, and it's not the best way to apply Meteorites balls or pressed Meteorites (or any powder). Instead, there are several other brushes I highly recommend for these purposes (and these are not in order of preference but the way to most logically describe them IMO). 1) The Burberry Beauty Brush is lovely and is lovely to powder products you want to use all over your face. It works great for the balls, loose and pressed powders. It's soft and not as dense at the NARS Botan, but it is definitely worth having in your brush collection, and I think you'll find yourself using it a lot. 2) The NARS Yachiyo Brush is THE perfect brush to apply blush and bronzers. Some Meteorites work better as a blush or a bronzer, and the Yachiyo is perfect in every way for this. You could use it as an all over powder applicator, too, but I feel like the Burberry Beauty Brush and the NARS Botan (next) are better for this. FYI, the Botan and Yachiyo (my favorite two brushes in my stash) are part of NARS Artisan Collection (there are four brushes in that collection). The other two are better for contouring. And also, FYI, the Botan and Yachiyo are both made of goat hair, like the Guerlain Meteorites Brush is. And finally, the granddaddy of them all, 3) the NARS Botan Brush is a super kabuki that I LOVE for applying powders (balls, loose, pressed) all over my face. It is VERY densely packed and not as soft as the Burberry Beauty Brush. But it is amazing, IMHO, and the BEST for buffing in your makeup for an airbrushed (as much as makeup can do this) look. I adore my NARS Botan and it is my favorite for using the balls. I put the Botan (it is large) over the mouth the the full sized Meteorites container and then turn it upside down. The I buff the powder residue from the balls all over my face. Voila! Perfect application. I've read on the MU board before someone saying they wish the Botan was softer, but I think it's soft enough. It's just SO dense, and I find it's denseness and firmness are perfect for the best powder application. But if you are looking for soft, get the Burberry Beauty Brush. It is super soft (and lovely). You can't go wrong with any of the three above, and all are better than the Guerlain Meteorites Brush. I'm giving the Meteorites Brush three lipsticks, however, because it does not shed (which I think indicates it is very well made) and because, as noted above, I do love all things Guerlain. :) I've had my brush for around eight years and washed it a lot (not as often as others because I don't reach for it very often), and mine does not shed. I got mine at Sephora, FYI, and not from ebay or Amazon. I personally believe that all brushes, no matter how high the quality, are going to shed on occasion, which is why I feel my Meteorites Brush is well made as it has not. Also, another nice thing about the Guerlain brush is that the bristles are dyed pink, which is cute and different from the black bristles in most of my other brushes (including the three above). But I like brushes for functionality as opposed to just appearance, and the Guerlain Meteorites Brush, while well made, simply is not as functional/effective as the other brushes. I find it harder to control application with this brush. In conclusion, the Meteorites Brush, at $36 now (and cheaper when I bought it) is less expensive than the NARS or Burberry, but I recommend taking the money you would spend for the Meteorites Brush and put it towards one of the other. Most people will probably find the Burberry Brush ($52) the most appealing (because it is so soft and has a cute squared metal plaid handle), and I do love it, but I find the Botan (the priciest at $75) and Yachiyo ($50) to be the best for me. I have the most controlled application with them. The Yachiyo is unmatched as a blush/bronzer blush. You simply cannot beat it. And the Botan is unmatched, in my opinion, as a kabuki brush (the Botan is definitely a SUPER kabuki) and as a buffing brush.

Foundations -Erno Laszlo - Absolute Finish Finishing Mousse Foundation
AnnaMaria 5/21/2011 12:33:00 AM
This is a really nice foundation -- very pigmented and I like the short ingredient list. I also like that it contains a BHA. You get a lot of product in the tub, especially considering how pigmented it is. I would buy again, but I don't see needing to for a while because one tub will last forever. I don't use the same foundation every day, but if I used this every day I would see it still lasting for many months. There are a few things I would change about it, so I took a lipstick off. One, I wish the palest shade was paler. It's a little too dark for me, but because it's pigmented, I blend it in over my zinc oxide-based sunscreen, and it works really well. And I wish it provided more moisture. It's quite matte. I like it better when I use a moisturizing primer underneath. But all in all, this is a really nice foundation I'm impressed with it and will keep using it. If I don't think I'm pulling off the color (I really do wish Porcelain was more porcelain than it is), I may end up offering it for swap, but it will only be because the shade isn't perfect for NW10 me because I really do like the formula. If you can find a shade that works for you and you like cream/mousse foundations, you should love this one. This is what I hoped the L'Oreal Magic Souffle would at least be a little like.

Misc Beauty Tools -Unlisted Brand - Lipstix Remix
AnnaMaria 5/19/2011 1:37:00 AM
MUAers who love lipstick, GET THIS! It is wonderful. It works just as it is supposed to work, and I have made FABULOUS lipsticks with it. I also have been able to make entirely new lipsticks out of what is left in the base of several tubes of my holy grail discontinued lipstick (Dior Rose Perspective). I didn't know just how much product is in the base (a lot) of lipsticks, until I used one of the little plastic tools provided in Lipstix Remix (LM) to scoop out the base. This will totally pay for itself by being able to make new lipstick out of tubes that have broken off and the excess in the bottom of the bases. I want to share a few things/tips I've learned in using it. One is that it usually takes more product than I initially estimate to fill the mold. If I took a brand new lipstick and melted it down, I would need to add a little more in order to have enough to fill the mold. I'm fine with that. It's just I learned over time to add a little more than I think I need to make sure I fill the mold and fit tightly in the base one I freeze and solidify it. Another thing is the that the mold is standard size -- so you can use this to refill your fancy high end tubes, like the Guerlain mirrored Rouge G case. You don't just have to use the tubes that come with LM, although they are quite nice and worth using. I would have never bought a Rouge G lipstick (or I would have been a lot less likely to) without Lipstix Remix. I've already refilled a Guerlain Kiss Kiss case and a Dior case and a Bobbi Brown case (which was the first I tried because the cases that come with LM look a LOT like BB black/gold cases). The process can be a little messy, but I also tend to speedily make my lipsticks, so slowing down would make it neater. And it's easy to clean up super quick. Use the Pam/cooking spray like the instructions recommend. It really helps for the lipsticks to pop out. Also, I tend to leave them in the freezer for quite a bit longer than the instructions recommend. I also need to microwave the lipsticks I am melting longer than they recommend. Make sure the mold is clicked tightly together. Twice when I was making lipsticks I didn't tightly lock it, and some melted lipstick seeped through. I just added a little more lipstick and remelted and it worked fine. I have already made eight lipsticks, and I adore and use them all. You can take shades that are too dark for you and add a little to lighter shades you love to turn them up a notch. I usually pick shades in the same family or I use all of the same shade (as in the case of my dc'd Dior HG). I have, however, mixed several unique shades before to see what I get, and it actually worked out quite well. This is as close as I will ever get to having my own makeup line. Again, GET THIS if you love lipstick. It is so worth it, and if you are like me, you will wish you had gotten it sooner. t works really well. It pays for itself with the product you previously tossed that you can now turn into gorgeous lipsticks. It's fun. This has been one of my favorite makeup purchases because it's the purchase that keeps giving. I had several lipsticks I loved that I had broken off in the tube. Previously I would usually not toss those, but I wouldn't reach for them. And now they are back as good as new. I could be on her informercial. I'd heard the inventor was on Shark Tank. I hope she won with this fabulous, innovative product that makes concocting your own gorgeous lipsticks incredibly fun and rewarding. And you'll have even more fun wearing your news shade that you created. AAA+++ product.

Eye Shadow -MAC - Shale Eyeshadow
AnnaMaria 5/15/2011 1:07:00 PM
Shale is my all-time favorite MAC Eyeshadow. I'm NW10, and Shale is beautiful for my skin tone. It's what I hoped Satin Taupe would be (after hearing all the raves for Satin Taupe for years). Don't get me wrong, I like Satin Taupe, but Shale is just so flattering and lovely. It's a purple gray shade, as others have said, but there is something taupish about it on me. I actually think of it as a purplish taupe. That is how it wears on me. It's great shade for work or can be applied more intensely for night. The discontinued Chanel Vega (also a purpley taupe) was one of my favorite shadows, and this kind of reminds me of it. If you are fair and cool toned, please check out Shale. I LOVE it and will definitely repurchase.
