Lovely fruit-incense-cedar-vanilla. The fruit is rather dark and melds really well with the other notes. Cheap at Winners right now, $13/1 oz. bottle (also lovely!).

Eye Shadow -NYX - Single Eyeshadow - Taupe Pearl
rated 4 of 5

A truly neutral taupe that will look great on all skin tones. I'm about NW20 and any warm shades make me look ill, but I love taupes. Needless to say I've had lots of disappointments but NYX has a great range of neutrals and TP is a gorgeous one. Doesn't lean yellow OR pink, a hard trick! A beautiful burnished taupe which is soft as butter, makes your eyes glow and goes with anything.

I adore NYX blushes, both powder and cream. A recent blush convert, their quality and gorgeous range of colours is on a par with much higher end brands... do try NYX before spending your $ on something just as good if not better!

Lipstick -MAC - Russian Red

I last wore RR in... 1992? At any rate, I've always loved it but felt no need to revisit it... until I tried it again and realised it is the perfect, perfect red. Incredible texture that is not 100% matte, so beautifully flattering. Slightly darker than MAC Red. Lasts like crazy, and makes me feel fantastic. Why did I wait so long?!?

Lipstick -Cover Girl - Lip Perfection in Divine
rated 5 of 5
highrise 4/17/2011 3:51:00 PM

The quality of the Lip Perfection line is terrific. Light as air, long-lasting and (at least for the pinks that I tested) crazy pigmented. They WILL stain your lips. This is fine by me in terms of longevity but may bother others. Fadeout is long and gradual, also a plus personally. Anyway, on to Divine! This is indeed like an amped-up Up The Amp. To be honest, it cranks what I wanted UTA to be up to 11. More magenta, but no tacky 80s factor. Stays on like cement, and feels like nothing. Top marks!

Mascara -Maybelline - Volum' Express The Falsies

Clump City, unfortunately. Even after wiping down the wand (and I don't like that bendy 'spoon' brush either!), it makes me look like I've got 3 fat lashes on each eye. Waited for it to dry out a bit, and still clumpy. No thanks!

Eye Shadow -Wet 'n' Wild - ColorIcon Palette in Lust [DISCONTINUED]

Fantastic quality, very cheap, and if you're cool-toned you will use EVERY colour in this palette. Amazingly pigmented and great dupes for pricey MACs.

Lipstick -Kat Von D - Hellbent

Great formula. Really light on the lips, and lasts for ages. This colour is remarkably different on the lips than it is in the case, as all the previous reviews attest. This wasn't a problem for me as I read the reviews here first but if I had bought it without testing I'd be quite shocked! I love bright, deep pinkish reds and that's exactly what this is, leaning a little more towards the pink end. It wears well but does stain.

Fragrances -Chanel - No 5 Eau Premiere
rated 4 of 5
highrise 2/24/2011 11:55:00 AM

No. 5 edt was one of my first 'proper' perfumes, and I liked it, but it was always a little soapy and...not quite enough on me. I've tried 2 samples of Eau Premiere and it is gorgeous - quite different but retaining a small element of No. 5 in its DNA, like a smaller, prettier cousin. However, to me there is a lot of crossover with Guerlain's Chamade, which is HG and has the additional green 'edge' that makes the sweet powderiness more unique. I can't warrant owning both, so I'll stick with Chamade - but Eau Premiere is beautifully done.

Lipstick -Marcelle - Rouge Xpression Lipstick - all
rated 4 of 5
highrise 2/3/2011 3:07:00 PM

Just saw a new display for about 10 new colours in the Rouge Xpression line at Rexall/PharmaPlus. Marcelle is overlooked - probably because they're Canadian and not easily available elsewhere! They are great quality but perhaps a little 'mumsy'. However, the last few campaigns seem to be changing that image, and there are some bright, vibrant colours in the new selection of lippies, which are creamy, pigmented and hardworking. I picked up 'Cleopatra' which is a gorgeous bright berry-fuschia- a slightly pinker version of MAC Plumful.

Blush -NYX - Angel

A really nice innocent pink matte blush - subtle, pretty and sweet. Soft texture makes it a little flyaway on application, but no bother. Cheap as chips too!

Blush -Cover Girl - Cheekers in Classic Pink

Cheap as chips, terrible packaging/brush but no matter - the colour's the thing - a beautiful pop of cool pink! I'm just discovering blush and love this - no-shimmer, brightens my eyes and whole face. A perfect pick-me-up for the January doldrums.

Blush -Physicians Formula - Happy Booster™ Glow & Mood Boosting Blush in rose
rated 5 of 5
highrise 1/22/2011 4:35:00 PM

I usually never buy PF (weird, expensive products to me), but I've discovered blush for the first time in my life and this little thing call my name loudly! Now let's be totally honest about the design - with those fat, adorable little shimmering hearts smiling up at you, how could you not bring one home? I picked up Rose. The violet scent is lovely and fades gradually. The colors in Rose are definitely cool-toned, ranging from baby pink to plum, with fine shimmer. The colour is a sweet, sexy flush which can be built to a rosy pin-up cheek. In Canada it's $17.99, par for PF's usual prices, but it does have a $6 mail-in rebate offer. I love this and having become a blush convert, now totally appreciate that little rush of happiness that it gives. Guess it works!

Eye Shadow -MAC - Unflappable Mega Metal Collection
rated 4 of 5
highrise 1/10/2011 10:11:00 AM

A beautiful dark shadow, the first MAC I've bought in ages as so many of the recent collections have been underwhelming or dupeable. The Mega Metal shadows are huge and there are some gorgeous, unusual colours but Unflappable was the standout for me as a fan of dark, burnished plums. While not as highly-pigmented as I thought, this works in favour of subtle shadowing on the entire lid. Wonderful in the crease and as a soft liner, blends beautifully with lighter shades.

Fragrance -Yves Saint Laurent - Kouros
rated 5 of 5
highrise 1/9/2011 5:27:00 PM

Okay, I've gone back to the department store three times to get spray samples of this, which means I need a whole bottle. Glorious with a fascinating, slightly repellent strain of civet and musky 'skank' that blends so well with the notes of incense, sweetness and pure hot cleanliness. Kouros conjures up such a strong image of old-school, sexy masculinity for me that I wonder if Dad wore it in his heyday. Husband may wear it, if he asks nicely.
