Lipstick -Lipstick Queen - Saint Nude
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 9/13/2010 9:54:00 AM

This is a great lipstick, which is extremely wearable for just about anyone. Like all the Saint colors from Lipstick Queen, this comes in a small gold colored round brushed metal tube, with the Lipstick Queen logo in dark purple printed on the cap. When you lift the cap, you will see the By Poppy logo printed on the tube containing the lipstick. The packaging feels high quality, and is very attractive. Though some brands have larger lipsticks, these aren't tiny or disappointing in their size or anything like that.

The colors is a great nude, a "My Lips But Better" shade that will flatter just about anyone. It is a muted medium light pinky brown color with a hint of orange to it. It's near neutral, but a little on the warm side. My skin is almost neutral, but leaning towards cool, and I am very fair, about a MAC NW/C 15. This doesn't look overly warm on me, it's not like I'm wearing a coral or a peach, it's really a MLBB shade. Despite this being Lipstick Queen's lighter lipstick formulation (the Sinner Lipsticks are the high pigment ones) I still consider this lipstick to have a medium level of pigment. It's more pigmented than Lipstick Queen's Medieval Lipstick, and more pigmented than tinted balms, or other light coverage lipsticks that have become popular lately. It's not 100% opaque on your lips, but the color definitely shows up. The finish is neither matte nor glossy, I would call it a satin finish, and it looks very natural on the lips. The lipstick doesn't feel sticky, nor does it feel dry. It basically feels like a balm on the lips.

I was surprised by how moisturizing this lipstick is. I thought it would be less moisturizing than the Medieval Lipstick, but I actually find it just as moisturizing. I do not feel the need to wear a balm or anything to stop this from drying my lips, which is great because my lips start to feel dry very easily. The moisturizing feeling lasts as long as the lipstick does, which for me is about 3 or 4 hours (that's longer than Medieval which lasts more like 2 or 3 hours on me). This is very comfortable on the lips, which is a big factor in why I keep reaching for it - it's so easy to wear! It looks great with everything, and feels great on the lips.

Fragrances -Unlisted Brand - Miller et Bertraux - Shanti Shanti
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 8/24/2010 10:09:00 AM

I created a new listing for this fragrance when first reviewing it - I failed to find this one as the spelling of the Brand is "Miller et Bertaux" not "Miller et Bertraux" ... however I am posting my review here as well, and I will mention this listing in my other (identical) review - I hope that doesn't cause confusion for anyone else!

Meaning "inner peace" Shanti Shanti is a lovely feminine fragrance from Miller et Bertaux with the following notes: Bulgarian rose petals, soft iris extract, cardamom, patchouli, and Indian Sandalwood.

The strongest first impression of Shanti Shanti is that of rose. Sweet, classic, instantly identifiable, unmistakable and beautifully captured. This is rose done well, which can sometimes be a rare thing. There have been so many rose based fragrances that just don't live up to the flower, that it seems like lots of people think they hate rose fragrances, but really, they just have yet to meet one that's really been done right. Now, even among rose lovers, opinions about what makes a perfect rose differ. This isn't my perfect rose, but it's a lovely rendition. Shanti Shanti is sweet, soft, and gives a strong feminine impression especially in the opening, when the rose notes are strongest, and little (if any) of the other notes come through. In my mind, Shanti Shanti is a pink rose, not a red one. I can't explain why this is ... but I think it's related to its sweetness and the lively and vibrant nature of these opening notes. Shanti Shanti leans a bit toward the smell of dried roses rather than the lush, fresh, covered in dew variety. However, the hints of iris bring back something of the garden, and living, growing things. The fragrance is warm, but not cozy.

As Shanti Shanti moves into the heart of its composition, the rose settles a little bit, and hints of cardamom and patchouli do become apparent, but it's the iris (to my nose - which softens and ties the whole composition together. Aside from rose, the other notes don't really jump out. When dabbed, the lasting power is moderate - base notes linger after 5 hours. The sillage has decent power at first, but quiets down after about 10 minutes. I believe that spraying this fragrance would result in increased lasting power and sillage.

Shanti Shanti is really pretty, it's a lovely fragrance, and I would absolutely suggest it to others, especially those who love rose. However, I don't *need* it in my collection, and as the price tag is quite high (about $155 for 3.4 oz) I'm happy to let this one pass me by.

Masks -Fresh - Umbrian clay face treatment
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 8/9/2010 7:57:00 AM

If you'd like to find most of the reviews of this product, they're under Skincare - Face, not specified as a mask. At the moment there are 49 reviews under that listing, and 15 under this one.

I've fallen in love with this Face Treatment. I asked for a sample at Sephora, so that I could try it out. I've read so many good reviews, but I wondered if I would really find it helpful. I've been using the Umbrian Clay as a spot treatment, even leaving it on overnight as suggested in a lot of reviews. A little might flake off, but it doesn't leave any mess on my pillows, and in the morning I can see that most of it is still on my skin. It does not irritate even very unhappy skin, and actually feels soothing on inflamed areas. It seems to dry up spots quite well, without drying my skin in general. I don't need any extra moisturizer because of using this, just my normal routine is fine. My biggest skin complaint is my hormonal breakouts, around my chin, which drive me crazy. This has been helping with them a lot, clearing up spots faster, and helping to prevent developing ones. It smells like clay, a sort of "clean dirt" smell that's not disagreeable, and my DH has said several times that though, yeah, it gives me crusty green/gray spots on my face, it doesn't bother him. He's even commented that it's working well. Using this just as a spot-treatment, a whole bottle will last a really long time. When I do get the full bottle (which will be happening very soon, indeed) I'll experiment with using it as a mask, and update my review as appropriate.

I've had a whole bottle of this for quite a while, and I still really like this product. I mainly continue to use it as an overnight spot treatment. It's nice as an all-over mask, but I actually think I get more benefits from it when leaving it long for a longer period of time. So using it as a mask for just 10 or 15 minutes almost feels like I'm 'wasting' it. One benefit of using a mask like this as a spot treatment is that if you're prone to picking at your skin, or even just touching or poking your spots, this will deter you. When I'm really tempted to pick, I can put on some of this, and not only is it actively helping my skin, it's also providing a physical, but more importantly, a psychological barrier to stop me from picking at anything.

Eyeliner -Shu Uemura - Eye light pencil White
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 12:28:00 PM

Basically, this is a chubby 2-ended eyeliner pencil. One end is matte white, the other end is pearl white. Mainly it's for brightening the eye and giving the impression of larger eyes that comes from using a light color like white, or peach on the lower waterline. Eye Light does have pretty good lasting power. Nothing will really last all day on my waterline, but this lasts about 4-5 hours on me if I don't wipe my eyes and rub it off, or cry or anything like that. Neither end of this pencil stings when used on my waterline which is a big deal for me. Most pencils, even those that others are OK with sting on my waterline, so it's good to find one that doesn't. I prefer to use the matte side on the waterline. It's more opaque than the pearl side which is very sheer on the waterline, though it's buildable when used elsewhere.

I keep hearing that a lot of people don't like white eyeliner for the waterline because it's "too harsh" and prefer to use peach or something like that. I think peach is great, but I disagree that white is "too harsh" I think that depends on application. Yes, you can sweep the liner back and forth and get a totally opaque application, but that's not necessary! I think it looks a lot better if you sweep it on lightly so that it's semi-transparent. Unless you've got some serious redness going on (in which case you probably don't want to aggravate it by wearing makeup anyhow) a sheer application is plenty to brighten and widen the eye without caking it on for a pure-white waterline.

The pearl end of the eyeliner is great for brightening the inner corner of the eyes, no matter what sort of makeup you're wearing. Both ends of the liner smudge and blend and sheer out nicely which makes it an easy and versatile tool - you can even use it to highlight under your brows.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - Ransom 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 10:53:00 AM

I love Ransom, and I've never come across another eyeliner that I think is comparable. It's a pretty special color! I would call it a violet purple, towards the blue end of the purple spectrum, and it definitely reflects blue-violet. It's almost like a duo-chrome or something, but it's a bit hard to describe anyhow. Ransom is a metallic color, without added glitter like some of the 24/7 eyeliners have. It's very soft and glides on completely smoothly. It can be applied really intensely, or smudged out. I will say that if you apply on the waterline, don't expect to be able to get the full intensity, you're just going to get a really sheer application ... it just doesn't adhere to the waterline. That's fine by me because though I think the glitter-free 24/7s work well for most people on the waterline, none of them work for me (they all sting because I have very sensitive eyes). I prefer to wear Ransom above the upper lashes, and it's a great high-impact pop of color. The blue/violet looks different in different lights and gives a great kind of 3-D effect as it catches the light. You can smudge it out if you want, it doesn't go matte when smudged out like some of the 24/7 shades (Rockstar) just becomes a more sheer version of itself, but it does lose a lot of excitement if you sheer it out. This is one of the shades from the Super Stash that I will rebuy if I run out, but it will take me longer to go through this than, for example, shades like Stash and Corrupt which are more everyday. I wear this when I feel like having a bit of fun with color.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide-On Eyepencil in Binge
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 10:43:00 AM

Binge is a metallic dark blue (not navy, it's bluer than that) without any glitter particles in it. It's dark enough that it's not super-loud or obvious if you want to wear it in a more subtle way, but it's not a subtle or versatile as Rockstar, for example. It's definitely not a neutral, it's clearly blue. You can smudge for a softer effect, or apply at full intensity. I actually don't really like how it looks when smudged very much, and I'm not a fan of all-over blue eye makeup, so I tend to apply it in its full metallic glory just along the upper lashes. Like all of the 24/7 pencils, Binge is very creamy soft, and just glides on. You can smudge it easily when it's newly applied, but once it's set it doesn't really budge until you remove it. It's a good color, but it's not one of my favorites from the Super Stash. I would say that this eyeliner is OK for the waterline because it doesn't have glitter, but I can't wear any of the 24/7 liners on my waterline - even Zero (plain black) stings a bit on my sensitive eyes.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - Graffiti 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 10:36:00 AM

Graffiti is a bright shimmery green color with small silver glitter in it. The base shade is metallic in addition to the glitter, so it has a lot of shine. This is not a demure color, it's quite bright even when it's smudged. The color is basically if you took the crayon labeled 'green' and added a bit of white to it. It's not a pastel, but it's not straight-up crayon-box green, it's lighter than that. I think Graffiti looks best if you're going for a bright look, and using it with colored eyeshadows, whether complimenting ones (other greens, yellows, teals etc.) or contrasting ones. It's not the most versatile eyeliner, but if you like brights, you'll probably love it. I wouldn't suggest wearing it on the waterline because it does have a good bit of glitter in it, but I don't wear any 24/7s on my waterline (even the glitter-free ones) because my eyes are quite sensitive.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Stash
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 10:28:00 AM

GORGEOUS. I'm a sucker for this sort of color - the dark olive green/brown with a hint of gold, and Stash does it beautifully. This is one of my favorite eyeliners from the Super Stash of 9 24/7 eyeliners, and I love the whole set so that's saying something. Stash is metallic, but without any visible glitter (other shades like Oil Slick and Corrupt, for example have small glitter in them). One of the best things about Stash is that it doesn't become less exciting if you smudge it out, it stays the same beautiful dark gold-olive, but less opaque. This isn't always true - for example Rockstar is another beautiful color (dark metallic purple) but when you smudge it it looks matte and a bit boring. Stash looks great applied at full intensity, and it looks great smudged. It's silky smooth and very soft, really gliding on without scratching or pulling at the eye area. If you want to smudge, that's easy to do as long as you smudge as soon as you've applied the liner. Once its set, it stays in place nicely. The other eyeliner that I like in a similar color is Bobbi Brown's Forest Shimmer Gel Ink Liner, but that has more black in it than Stash. Since Stash doesn't have glitter particles in it, it's fine for the waterline, but I don't use 24/7 eyeliners on the waterline because they sting my eyes a bit (this is not the case for most people as far as I can tell). This is one of those colors that really looks good on everyone. I am quite pale with blue/green/gray eyes and this looks great on me. It can be understated, but you can definitely get drama with it too, it's all about how you apply it and what eyeshadows you match it with.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - 24/7 eyeliner in Rockstar
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 10:18:00 AM

Rockstar is a gorgeous color, and one that I haven't seen everywhere. It's a very dark purple, fairly well balanced between blue and red. It doesn't really have any shimmer, but the color itself is a bit metallic when you apply it at full intensity (if you smudge it out it's basically matte, and looks much less purple). This isn't an eyeliner that looks purple from across the room, in fact, you can wear this with neutrals if you want to - it's not loud. But it's more purple than some of the blackened-purple shades that are out there, for example this is significantly more purple than LM blackened violet kohl. This is just one of those colors that's hard to describe, but really easy to wear. It can look a bit more dramatic depending on how you apply it, and what eyeshadows you put with it. I think it looks great on green or blue eyes, making them look more green or blue, but it would also be very pretty with brown eyes. Like all 24/7 eyeliners is glides on really smoothly, and lasts pretty much until you remove it. You can smudge it if you want, but once it's set it doesn't move around. Since this shade doesn't have glitter, it's OK on the waterline, but 24/7s sting a bit on my waterline, so I don't use them that way (sensitive eyes).

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide-On Eyepencil in Corrupt
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 9:25:00 AM

Corrupt is a gorgeous eyeliner. I have the mini from the Super Stash, but when I've used it up (and I will) I'd like a full size if they make them. Corrupt is a neutral to cool dark brown color. The color itself is a bit metallic, by which I mean even without the bit of sparkle in it, it would still be a little on the metallic side, if that makes sense - the base isn't matte. The color is that perfect brown that just suits everyone really well. It's a very wearable color, despite the small silver glitter, which doesn't take over. The shimmer is enough to make it a bit more interesting and complex, but it's not enough to make this a loud eyeliner, or something that you would only wear when going out. I like that Urban Decay doesn't just do glitter or no glitter, they do different amounts of glitter - Corrupt has a small amount of glitter, whereas other colors, like Oil Slick for example, have more glitter. This eyeliner can be smudged out or just used in a solid line, and both look good. It's soft and applies very smoothly - the 24/7 eyeliners really do 'glide on'. You can have a great intensity of color if that's what you want.

Eyeliner -Urban Decay - 24/7 Glide-On Eyepencil in Oil Slick
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 9:18:00 AM

I wouldn't say that Oil Slick is an essential or anything, but this is a fun eyeliner to have. It's a dark charcoal gray color with visible silver glitter. I've seen the same thing done a lot of times, but this is my favorite example :) This is a color that looks great along the upper lash line, or among and under the bottom lashes. You can smudge it out for a smokier look with a bit of glitter here and there, or you can apply in a strong line, which is a bit more dramatic and 'special'. One thing I would say, however - don't put this on your waterline if you have sensitive eyes. All of the UD 24/7 eyeliners sting a bit on my waterlines, so I don't use them that way, but ones with glitter are the worst for it. That's fine with me, because I don't really want glitter on my waterline, but it's worth mentioning in case anyone reading this review might want to use it that way.

This eyeliner doesn't do anything that you couldn't accomplish with a plain black or dark gray eyeliner and a bit of glitter ... but it's easy and fast, and it looks great.

Fragrances -Unlisted Brand - Parfums MDCI FK1 Promesse de Aube
rated 3 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 7:59:00 AM

Pretty, but not as pretty as the price is high. Even if you buy the bottle without the crazy expensive (but admittedly very pretty, unique and classy) bust for the cap, it's still really costly.

It opens with a nice few minutes of sweetened citrus, gentler mandarin along with lemon. Underneath these notes, the ylang ylang and jasmine start to come through. They're very nicely done, but at the same time ... I can't help but feel that Promesse de l'Aube is, more than anything else, just a better version of a composition that most of us have smelled hundreds of times before, all over the department store. Don't get me wrong, this *is* done better - the balance is just right, the development is lovely, it's downright pretty. But I've smelled this before, and I'm not 100% sure that if you blindfolded me I could actually pick this out of a crowd of fragrances that you can get for about $50 (especially if you look online at discount sites). And I'm almost positive that if you tried the same test with someone who's *not* obsessed with perfume they wouldn't pick up on this fragrance being better than the masses with which it shares so much. Back to the fragrance itself - Promesse de l'Aube sits on a nice base of sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla. It's soft and sweetly gentle. It lasts pretty well, and has almost universal appeal, I can't really imagine anyone hating this. I have no doubt that if I had a full bottle I'd wear it and enjoy it, and I think I'd probably get a lot of compliments ... but it lacks a "wow" factor, and I just can't imagine how I could justify the price.

Lip Gloss -Yves Saint Laurent - golden gloss 2
rated 4 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/21/2010 6:32:00 AM

I don't think I would have bought this gloss on my own, if I hadn't seen pictures of it on others and heard so many raves. In the clear tube, it looks like it's going to be *extremely* glittery. And though I can take a bit of shimmer on lips, full on glitter doesn't really work for me. However, though there is indeed quite a lot of these tiny gold flecks in this gloss, it doesn't seem actually glittery on lips. The particles are smaller than that and the medium opacity of the gloss itself helps to mute them somewhat. This is still on the 'high glamor' side of what I'd wear on my lips, but it *is* within the boundaries of what I think looks good. I don't really wear this gloss everyday, it's not that I'm saving it, so much as that it's not really my everyday style. I like to wear this when I go out, or if I'm going to be somewhere that a bit more drama is appropriate. In terms of color, this is a pretty and understated gloss that would suit just about everyone. It's kind of a slightly muted rosey pink with a touch of peachy brown in it. If you want it to seem more pink or more nude, you can change it by applying different lipsticks underneath it, though I have to admit that I'm lazy so I usually wear it on its own. The texture is smooth and pretty much non-sticky. It lasts a couple hours, and then leaves you with the color pretty much gone, but the shimmer remaining. That's a bit weird, but actually it doesn't look horrible - it's not like you *must* touch up or look like a freak. It can feel slightly gritty if you're really looking for that texture, but I don't notice it particularly on my lips. I don't mind that slight grittyness in a color that can actually prompt others to ask what you're wearing on your lips. My mom and one of my friends have both gone and bought this gloss after seeing me wearing it and trying it out for themselves - and that's a good recommendation! The mango (or whatever it is) scent isn't ideal, it bothers me more than, for example, the light tea scent of Dior Creme de Gloss, but it doesn't bother me to the point of not wearing this gloss. It fades after a while and you don't really smell it much after you apply it. There is no taste. One warning - though it's easy to wipe off the color in this gloss, the glitter is tenacious. It remains after the gloss is gone, and if you kiss someone, even if they wipe off any gloss color, they're still going to have glitter remaining!

Fragrances -Andy Tauer - L'Air du Desert Marocain by Andy Tauer
rated 5 of 5
proximitythe53rd 7/14/2010 9:53:00 AM

This is just a beautiful fragrance, and I would urge anyone who's even remotely interested in this 'sort' of fragrance to give this one a try. If you like fragrances like Serge Lutens's Chergui or Borneo 1834, sampling L'Air du Desert Marocain is a must.

To give you some idea of the progression of the fragrance - in the opening, you can smell citrus (bitter orange in this case) in the top notes. The citrus seems to blend, on one hand, with a coriander note which makes everything feel slightly green, in a spicy way. On the other hand, the citrus also seems to blend with a lighter touch of intoxicating floral (jasmine, softened and linked to the rest of the fragrance by rose). Under this opening, I start to smell boozy, darker, sweet (but not cloying) and darkly musky notes. Cedar has a definite presence here and it's a bit spicy and just a touch green, but fairly dry. It doesn't smell like woodshop-cedar though, the note is not as strong or distinct as that. The fragrance goes through a lot of changes and it's very alive on the skin. You smell different facets of the composition come to the forefront from moment to moment. The notes are there to be picked out as distinct entities, but they also blend together to give the fragrance an overall feel of being beautiful but not inaccessible (though certainly unusual exotic) and really pulling you in and sweeping you up (but not overwhelming you) with its unique character and the path of its development. The patchouli gives it a touch of a Serge Lutens Borneo 1834 feel (a more real, 'wrapped in patchouli leaves to protect rare silks from moths' sort of a smell), as opposed to a hippie or head-shop sort of patchouli. It has a bit of a slightly musty chocolately tone to it which seems fundamentally tied to the dark amber note, which itself has a resinous, incensnse-y, un-sweetened quality. Once the fragrance has been on your skin for a while, you don't really smell the bitter orange or coriander anymore, and the other notes are more smooth and seamless, not as easy to pick one from the other as in the opening. This fragrance is long lasting, and continues to evolve on the skin until it reaches the dry-down - sweeter, more vanillic and gentle, a bit cozy but still without becoming boring. The dry-down is long lasting, this is a fragrance you may very well still be able to detect the next morning.

I know people often wonder how this fragrance compares to Serge Lutens's Chergui. There are similarities, but they are absolutely not the same. I think others have covered the differences in the notes (Chergui: sweeter, more hay and tobacco; L'air du Desert Marocain: dryer, with cedar and an incense and patchouli vibe), but I would go on to say that though the fragrances do have a similar 'mood' they are quite distinct, and I feel *almost* equal desire for both. However, Chergui stole my heart first, and there is something about it that I've never been able to quite put my finger on that absolutely captures me. This fragrance has that quality as well, but not *quite* to the same degree. That doesn't mean I want to have to pick between them, and I intend to simply solve the problem by getting a full bottle of each when I'm not dead broke.

L'Air du Desert Marocain has this wonderful quality of being warming on a cold day, and cooling on a hot day. I might consider not wearing it on the hottest of hot days, but really ... I've worn it privately for my own pleasure on some pretty hot days, and zero complaint here. It doesn't seem to become suffocating.
