BB Cream -Skin79 - Vital BB Cream SPF50++ Hot Orange Label
rated 3 of 5
PiMehMeh 9/1/2012 5:41:00 PM

This particular Vital BB claims to have a matte finish, so I obtained it to test it against my oily, summer skin conditions. The cream dispenses via a squeeze pump, and because this has medium to full coverage, it should be applied sparingly to avoid the mask-like effect. However, this negates the effectiveness of its very high SPF; to avoid the mask-like effect and still protect your entire face, I recommend wearing a separate clear sunscreen underneath first. If you have very fair, neutral- or yellow-toned skin, this should be a good match as it only comes in a single, yellow-toned shade that will not work for cool undertones or medium to deep skin tones. I have light-medium skintone, so while the yellow undertones were perfect for me, this was actually too light for me, as I've had to mix it with darker BBs or foundations to match my skin tone. This BB applies semi-matte and dries to a matte finish with little oxidation. I tested this in 100°F+ humid summer weather and found myself blotting oil already after only 2 hours of wear, so this does not stay matte for long and isn't very effective at controlling oil if the climate is extreme. But in 80°F–90°F its mattifying effects last a little longer, where I've blotted only once after around 4 hours of wear. Over all, the coverage or staying power of this BB has lasted me around 7 hours in the summer. I have not tested this for winter wear. Also, because this has a matte finish intended to keep the skin dry, I'm not so sure that I recommend it for dry skin types, for which it may accentuate dry patches. This is probably best for normal to combo-oily skin types year-round, but it can't hurt for those with very oily skin to try this during the winter when their skin won't be as oily but still needs a matte finish.

Eyeliner -Maybelline - Unstoppable Eyeliner
rated 5 of 5
PiMehMeh 9/1/2012 5:18:00 PM

I have purchased this eyeliner twice because not only was it affordable, easy to apply and manipulate, and convenient on the-go, but it was also effective at holding up against a variety of wet conditions including surf and salt water, monsoon-like rain storms, tropical humidity, and—dare I say—long, adventurous nights in the bedroom. I have worn this on my oily lids without primer and have never experienced fading or smudging. I purchased this liner in Onyx, but it also comes in a few other dark colors that, as of this review being written, I have yet to try. This is nice for those who don't like stark black liners but prefer dark liners with a hint of warming or cooling color. Otherwise you don't have a whole lot of color options for these babies. The ergonomics of the product are standard as well; you twist to expose the eyeliner. I have actually never experienced any breakage, as I twist up only a little and apply conservatively. The packaging of this eyeliner does not include a self-sharpener so crisp lines can be difficult to achieve upon application, but this formula applies creamy and is pretty forgiving, as it does not set to dry right away. You have about a minute to smudge, sharpen, and manipulate the shapes you draw before the eyeliner sets and becomes waterproof. To make application easier, it is good to have waterproof makeup remover and cotton swaps handy for shaping, or to have a smudging eyeliner sponge or brush, such as e.l.f.'s Smudge Eye Sponge. But if those are not handy, once again, this eyeliner gives you enough time to shape it even with just your finger tips before setting, which is nice when you're on the go and don't have a full dresser at your disposal. I find this to still be an easy formula to work with and can still achieve the cat eye look, with or without any other tools.

Mascara -Neutrogena - Healthy Volume
rated 5 of 5
PiMehMeh 8/8/2012 7:14:00 PM

The packaging for this mascara looks cheap but the formula was in fact very impressive, comparable to Maybelline’s Full N Soft Mascara (my favorite, but this is a close second). I have short lashes, so this mascara's large wand applicator was a little tricky to maneuver through each lash without missing. But the mascara is pretty fluid, so I never experienced clumping and it separated my lashes nicely and didn't weigh them down throughout the day. No flaking, either! However, it is easy to wash off at the end of the day, so some people may find that this smudges easily during wear. My favorite thing about this mascara is its olive oil component, and how soft my lashes stay with it on. It lengthens and volumizes in a single coat, and it doesn't feel stiff or brittle. I actually wonder if it possibly improved the health of my lashes, because I noticed that both my naked upper and lower lashes were slightly longer with repeated use. For those who are looking for a very dramatic look, this probably won’t volumize and lengthen your lashes enough, but this is a really nice if you like a look that's in between natural/no-makeup and dramatic. Once you get used to the brush, it’s very easy and quick to apply since just a single coat makes a big difference.

BB Cream -Unlisted Brand - Hada Labo - Hyaluronic Acid BB Moist Cream SPF32 PA+++
rated 5 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/29/2012 11:49:00 PM

This BB is a cream formula that has a liquid equivalent for normal/combo/oily skin and long sun exposure, Hyaluronic Acid BB Emulsion SPF50 PA+++, and a whitening equivalent for damaged skin or post-sun exposure, Hyaluronic Acid BB Medicinal Whitening Cream SPF32 PA+++. They all have high-SPF (UVA), broad-spectrum (UVB) sun protection, are alcohol/ethanol- and fragrance-free (great for sensitive skin), are paraben-free, and the shades are for the most part the same across products (slightly lighter for creams). Unfortunately, medium- to deep-toned skin types will not find a color match with any of these products. I received the Hada Labo BB cream in Natural Beige (the tanner of the two shades is Natural Ochre) as a gift from a former Japanese roommate back in January of this year, so I have been using this for 7 months (winter through summer) at the time of writing this review. It is my favorite BBs of the many I have tried, largely because Natural Beige has a yellow/golden undertone that evens out my skin tone and and gives it a healthy glow without making me look ghostly pale like many gray-toned Korean BB creams have. All of Hada Labo's BBs are yellow-toned, however, so while they are great for yellow and neutral undertones, they are probably not a product for those with cool/pink undertones. The coverage is sheer but buildable to a medium. It evens out my skin tone beautifully and has a natural, satin finish when blended in, and can be matted with finishing powder if desired especially for oily skin, because this may feel heavy after 6 hours. This works well at covering my dark circles because of its yellow undertone, but acne scars or other dark spots around the face may need concealer since this will not cover it all in a single layer. The texture of this "cream" is actually more fluid than most Korean BB creams (this may seem runny during initial dispensing from the tube) but it's still a little thicker than the emulsion formula, so the cream is moreso a treat for dry skin than oily skin because it is more moisturizing. But its light, fluid texture makes it easy to apply and blend over the face using fingertips, a brush, or sponge. I have used this for three seasons, and while the moisturizing is greatly appreciated during the winter when my skin is dry, it may be a little too moisturizing with the summer sweat so powder on the T-zone especially helps tone down shine and oil for summer application. The staying power varies among skin types and seasonal climates, but on average across the seasons, this will last me 5 hours of wear time without powder and up to 8 with powder. During the summer, I blot no more than twice throughout wear time. While the coverage may not be enough to cover significant skin imperfections, I love this BB for its lightweight and easy application, healthy looking shades, high-SPF, broad-spectrum sun protection, skin tone evening, its omitting of comedogenic ingredients (alcohol, fragrance, and parabens), and the fact that it is an BB option that doesn't whiten the skin like most Asian BBs do. At US$16 (US$20 at most online retailers), it's a little pricey compared to most Korean BB creams but still cheaper than many high-end Asian and Western BB creams. And you get 45g/1.6oz of product; with the aforementioned benefits, it's a generous amount and well worth it. As for those who are looking for yellow-toned BBs with higher coverage, try Ishizawa nanocé BB moist cream SPF30 PA++ 40g/1.4oz (~US$20–$40 depending where you look) or Kanebo KATE Mineral Cover BB Gel Cream SPF30 PA++ 30ml/1oz (~US$16–$20), both from Japan. The tubes are a little smaller, the sun protection levels are a little lower, and the shade selection is still limited to fair-medium, but these provide a stronger medium coverage than Hada Labo's BB Moist Cream.

BB Cream -Maybelline - Dream Fresh 8-in-1 BB Cream
rated 3 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/29/2012 1:12:00 AM

For those who are familiar with Asian BB creams, once again this American BB cream is hardly anything like the Asian BB creams despite Maybelline’s forage into Asian BB territory in the past (they have at least 3 Asian BBs). But to be fair, BB has a very broad definition now and Maybelline is simply tweaking its formula to meet the demands of a different demographic with Dream Fresh BB. I tried this BB in Light/Medium, which wasn't quite a match because it has pink undertones (I have gold/neutral undertones) but once blended it dries sheer and the undertones aren’t noticeable. Dream Fresh BB performs much more like a tinted moisturizer, but it makes a surprisingly good tinted moisturizer for its lightweight feel and subtly dewy finish. The back of the Dream Fresh BB tube has a rubric to score by, so here is how I feel this BB performs based on its claims: 1. Blurs imperfections—it does even out minor imperfections/uneven skintone, but coverage is sheer so concealer or another foundation may need to be layered over more noticeable imperfections. 2. Enhances—what exactly it enhances, it doesn't specify. 3. Brightens—yes, given you get a close color match of the 5 offered to the American market (4 in the European market, I believe). I notice that these BBs have cool/pink undertones. 4. Adjusts to skin tone—coverage is very sheer, so technically, it blends into your natural skin tone, not adjusts. But it's otherwise natural-looking. 5. Smoothes—this in fact makes a pretty good primer for powder makeup. 6. Hydrates—yes, great for dry to normal skin. Okay for oily skin as long as you dust matte powder over it to set it and prevent too much oil coming through in a few hours, because this does not seem to have oil control properties. 7. SPF30 protects—probably not, because this only contains 1.15% titanium dioxide; a more substantial sunscreen should be worn underneath 8. 0% oils and other heavy ingredients—it does feel amazingly lightweight. Based on its own rubric, this product scores 6/8 for me but may teeter at 4/8 or 5/8 for some people due to shade selection and specific skin needs (hydration, blemishes, uneven skin tone, coverage, etc.) As far as its claims, this BB cream succeeds as a lightweight tinted moisturizer but fails as a sunscreen. I use it primarily as a primer (it’s cheaper than most primers too, at $7 or $8) and moisturizer over an actual sunscreen to ensure sun protection, and add powder foundation for additional coverage I might need. Dream Fresh BB isn't enough of a multi-tasker to replace an existing skin care and foundation regimen like most Asian BBs intend to do, but it can still fit nicely into an existing one. As for me personally, I will not be repurchasing this BB because my needs for coverage, sunscreen, and skin care are better met by other foundations and traditional Asian BBs at a relatively comparable price. Tinted moisturizers and BBs that perform like tinted moisturizers (most American BBs) just don't seem to work out for my combo-oily skin type.

Tinted Moisturizer -Urban Decay - Urban Defense Tinted Moisturizer SPF20
rated 2 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/28/2012 9:20:00 PM

I used this product in its older pump-dispenser tube packaging in the shade Bodyguard during both winter and summer seasons. Bodyguard is their second-lightest shade after Halo, but is best for medium skin tones as it was a tad too dark for my light-medium skin tone. Luckily, the coverage, as with most tinted moisturizers, is sheer, so I got away with a tanner look in the summer. However, I find that tinted moisturizers don’t seem to quite work out for me possibly because I have combo-oily skin, so my face is naturally already moisturizing itself. Other tinted moisturizers I have tried though are Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Tinted Moisturizer SPF15 and Josie Maran Argan Tinted Moisturizer SPF30, as well as Maybelline Dream Fresh BB (more of a tinted moisturizer than a BB in my opinion), but all of these formulas yielded less of an oil-slick finish on my face than Urban Defense did. Urban Defense made my face look like I was sweating without going to a gym, at least until I set it with matte powder; it wasn't so bad after that. The pump dispenser packaging also dispenses more than you need for one application; half a pump is best. Honestly this was better to use during the winter, when the weather dried up some of the oiliness. Also, this tinted moisturizer claims to have SPF20 sunscreen protection, but from the looks of the ingredients, there is no presence of titanium dioxide as a sunscreen ingredient among the others listed... so I have my doubts about this being an effective sunscreen.

Foundations -Maybelline - Dream Matte Mousse
rated 3 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/28/2012 8:56:00 PM

I’m split over this product. I have been using this foundation for 2 months and alternated it with other matte foundations, BB creams, and powders to compare them. I was lucky that Light 4 Nude was a good match for me, as I have gold undertones that drugstore foundations just don't cater to, but luckily I can get away with neutral-undertone foundations. But I find that Maybelline ones tend to run too cool or too warm/orange, so I was surprised that Light 4 Nude worked out. While I am ecstatic that I found a shade that worked for me where I typically wouldn’t, the formula is what I am on the fence about. The foundation has a fluffy cream mousse texture, which blends easily and beautifully to a natural-looking, sheer–medium coverage with the promised matte finish. It’s $7 at most retailers, so it’s pretty cheap and great for everyday wear, errands, and casual outings. I don’t feel overly made-up at all. However, this foundation isn’t buildable; in fact, I’m not sure that it sets to dry fast enough to build up the coverage. While the finish is deceptively matte and seems to have set, it does slide on my combo-oily skin regardless how long I’ve worn it. So it’s hard to layer it on since I just end up swiping off my first layers. What helps with this foundation’s staying power is to use a matte finishing powder over it so it doesn’t slide all over my face, while keeping it truly matte and controlling sebum much better than if I were to wear the foundation alone. Without powder, this foundation lasts 3 hours before the matte effect starts to glisten in oil. With powder, I get 6 hours of matte wear. But I do have combo-oily skin with a few dry patches from weather damage or acne spot treatments, and unfortunately the foundation (with or without powder) will accentuate the dryness unless I spot-moisturize those dry areas. So as far as skin types go, I don’t recommend this for extremes of dry or oily skin; it's the least work to apply onto normal skin, because even combo skin types will have to put in a little more prepping and priming on different areas of their face to get desired, even results. I like this foundation for everyday wear; while its staying power isn’t great and it’s very tricky on combo skin, I don't feel guilty about its price point. I wore this alternatively with MISSHA M Signature Real Complete BB Cream SPF25 PA++ (semi-matte finish, $17 for 0.7oz/20ml) and with CLINIQUE Stay Matte Liquid Foundation (matte finish, $23 for 1oz/30ml), I honestly prefer these two formulas over Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse because, while they are more expensive, the staying power is 2 hours longer (with and without powder), and the coverage is superior to Dream Matte Mousse, with far less effort to apply.

Moisturizers -Cetaphil - Cetaphil Derma Control Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30
rated 2 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/28/2012 8:05:00 PM

A friend gave this to me since it wasn't working out for her; she has sensitive skin, but I don't. However, I do have combo-oily skin and was on the hunt for products that controlled oil, reduced shine, or had a matte finish. This product did just that, even under a light foundation with finishing powder, but these benefits didn't last very long before I started seeing shine come back when I checked 4 hours later. My makeup looked better for longer using a Clinique moisturizer instead. I would have continued using this moisturizer anyway just to finish it, but the most off-putting thing about the Cetaphil moisturizer more than anything was its odor; it smelled a little bitter, a little sour. And it was practically brand new! I'm not sure that it was supposed to smell that way, but I just couldn't deal with it on my face let alone the unimpressive oil control. Glad that this bottle was just given to me, but I see why my friend regrets spending the $14 she did on it.

Eye Shadow -Wet 'n' Wild - 8-pan Palette "Comfort Zone"
rated 4 of 5
PiMehMeh 7/28/2012 7:51:00 PM

This caught my eye because the color selection is very similar to Kat Von D's True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in Ludwig, which also contains neutrals and wearable greens in matte and shimmer finishes, but costs 8 times more! The WnW is a great starter palette, because the shades are wearable, the pigmentation is stellar, the texture is soft and silky and not overly powdery, and one of the definer shades is an unusual brown with aqua/green reflective shimmer, which the Kat Von D palette does NOT have and is very similar in shade and sheen to Urban Decay's Lounge eyeshadow single. The WnW Comfort Zone palette is also versatile in that you can choose for a subtle natural daytime look with 2 or 3 of the shades, add a pop of green color for something a little off-beat, or create a dramatic, smokey, night time look. Cheap and sub-standard packaging design aside, the only thing that keeps this palette from being perfect is that the green eyelid shade does not have great wear time; it does fade into a neutral color after about 3 hours of wear, even with primer. Otherwise, this $5 palette is a gem!

Lipstick -Clinique - Butter Shine Lipstick - Delovely
rated 4 of 5
PiMehMeh 6/8/2012 7:41:00 PM

After testing out several of the colors I bought Delovely and have been using it at least once a week since then. Given that Delovely is a nude shade, it's a little difficult to say that it has serious color payoff; at best, it's pretty sheer, but all of the colors from their Butter Shine Lipsticks are more saturated than their Almost Lipsticks (practically a lip balm). Butter Shine Lipsticks seem to take one coat for sheer color and shine, and two for true color. No more than two though, because the shine may be too much unless you blot off the shine first. Delovely did work at evening out my lip tone and moisturized them very well for about 4 hours before the shine began to fade. Not bad, compared to the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters, which lost their shine in two hours and flaked if I didn't use a lip balm underneath.. kind of defeated the purpose of being a moisturizing lipstick! If it weren't for the flaking and over-drying, I would have loved Revlon's too because the pigmentation of their lip butters is actually better than Clinique's. But Clinique's Butter Shine Lipstick did not require pre-moisturizing and never flaked, and the lasting power was at least twice that of Revlon's. It's also about twice the price, but I wanted moisturizing color and this does it better than Revlon's, and the metal bamboo-shaped casing is adorable and secure. Note that because the casing is metal and the formula is a soft gloss stick, this doesn't bode well in makeup bags on a hot day because it may melt faster than lipsticks in plastic casings. While this may not be a great option for those who need a lip color on the go or need the strong pigmentation of a true lipstick, it definitely moisturizes for hours with a wearable color before reapplication might be needed again. The color lasts longer than the shine, so even if the shine fades and you have to reapply for added moisture, the nice thing is you're building up color with the second application. This is a winner for me as far as my needs for dry lips and color evening goes, so I would definitely repurchase.

Eye Primer -Victoria's Secret - Pro Lasting FX Eyeshadow Primer
rated 4 of 5
PiMehMeh 5/1/2012 10:15:00 PM

I am a bit of an eyeshadow junkie but I tend to be a budget runner as well, so I really strayed away from Urban Decay Primer Potion (and well, it felt too thick on my eyelids, and even naked, my eyelids tend to feel heavy as is). So I went ahead and tried out VS PRO's eyeshadow primer and loved that felt far lighter than UDPP and didn't compromise the intensity of my eyeshadows from day to night. If any fading occurred, it usually had to do with the eyeshadow itself (I use more drugstore shadows than prestige), not the primer. I never had creasing with this. Although the formula for this primer is light on the eyes, it can feel a little oily and greasy so it's a hit-or-miss for those who don't have dry or normal skin. I myself have oily lids that just get oilier throughout the day, but just a dot of this primer on each lid somehow keeps that in check without weighing my eyes down. Sometimes when I use this, the tube (I've only bought the tube packaging, not the new wand packaging) does dispense oil before the product, in which case I just keep dispensing until the product pushes out the excess oil. Albeit if there's no oil it does dry out the product faster, so I would squeeze with caution. Also, compared to primers from UDPP and NYX HD Studio Photogenic Eyeshadow Primer (which comes closest in texture of all the primers I have tried so far), this one isn't entirely creamy in texture, in fact it's slightly grainy. I personally love the texture because it feels like an eyelid massage while spreading it. I loved this enough that I bought three tubes of it back while it was still a squeeze tube formula. Since they revamped their packaging (and possibly their formula—haven't tried this one yet), the price of this primer has been going up in $2 increments. It used to be $8, then it was $10, and now it's $12. It's still relatively inexpensive, but I have since moved onto trying NYX's HD eyeshadow primer which has similar packaging and product consistency as VS PRO's, but for $5-$6 (I actually picked this up at ULTA for $3 during a BOGO sale).

Primer/ Corrector -E.L.F. - Mineral Infused Face Primer
rated 4 of 5
PiMehMeh 5/1/2012 9:44:00 PM

I used this at the same time as I was using the more expensive Victoria's Secret VS PRO Airbrush FX Face Primer. The packaging between the two was largely the same, except in VS PRO's, you could see how much primer you have left, whereas the jar for e.l.f.'s was opaque so you had to guess how much product you had remaining. I knocked down my rating for the latter as well because the pump for e.l.f.'s primer actually broke off after about 2 weeks of use, so I had to keep scooping primer out of the bottle using a cotton swab. Despite the packaging fluke (which I hope is all it was), this face primer is actually really nice on the skin, especially those who may have oily areas. I usually warm it by rubbing it between both my hands briefly and then patting it all over my face. This primer is lightweight and is in a clear gel formula, so after it's spread, it feels like nothing at all, hardly leaves a greasy feeling, and doesn't give a white or cool cast like NYX HD Studio Photogenic Primer does. If you need color correction, this won't do, but if you only need a lightweight primer that won't contribute to excess sebum, this is a very affordable choice.

Palettes -E.L.F. - 32 Piece Eyeshadow Collection
rated 3 of 5
PiMehMeh 5/1/2012 9:14:00 PM

I received the palette with cool and neutral colors as a Christmas gift a few months ago. I have also used the Endless Eyes Pro Palette that has 100 colors, but I was very disappointed with that one. This 32-color palette or Endless Eyes Mini Pro Palette, however, turns my impression around, especially for its retail price. Unlike its larger counterpart, nearly all of the colors in this palette are much softer to the touch and are more pigmented and ergonomic. For those who have not tried out the 100-pan palette, about half of the colors required scraping work to get any pigment out of their pans. Whereas this one, I would say most of the colors are a joy to apply. The only shades that I had the most trouble applying were the darker shades that made up the right side of the palette; this is where the pigmentation and ease of ease falters. Particularly, it was the darkest neutral shades that were the most trouble applying, as these were either chalky in texture or would require scraping/scratching/scoring just to get a little pigment out of the pan. The application of the blacks and greens was also very sheer and harder to build intensity compared to the darkest blues and greens. I myself will not be repurchasing this palette because I am in need of well-pigmented shades that don't break wallets. However, if you are on a budget and are looking for a good cool palette, I would still recommend this as most of the colors are still very good for what you pay. One work-around for this palette if you have problems applying any of the colors, especially the darker ones, is to apply them using wet-on-wet techniques and to definitely use primers and eyeshadow bases underneath these.

BB Cream -MISSHA - Cho Bo Yang BB Cream
rated 4 of 5
PiMehMeh 4/30/2012 2:54:00 AM

I picked this up this BB cream in a 20ml tube in shade No.2 Calm Beige during one of MISSHA's flash sales, probably one of the only times I would purchase them because this tube is otherwise $18 and the 50ml tube is $46! I'm not sure that it's worth that high of a price tag, but I will definitely vouch that the product is worth trying if you can catch the flash sales! In the past I have also used a few BB creams including MISSHA's Perfect Cover and Signature Real Complete BB creams. I personally really like Cho Bo Yang BB Cream; it's faintly fragrant, it has a natural, semi-matte finish, and amazing medium-to-full coverage. This is currently the only BB cream I have tried so far with that kind of coverage. Unfortunately, because this covers so well, you need to match your skin tone if you can. Even more unfortunately, this only comes in 2 shades. I had their deeper shade, and although it eventually does come close to my skin tone after oxidizing, I must note that I do have yellow undertones and this neutralizes/dulls it just a little more than I would have liked. One of the things that may be troubling about applying this BB cream is that it has a very, very thick consistency. Ranked from watery to viscous: Signature Real Complete, Perfect Cover, and Cho Bo Yang. Because this is a thick cream formulation, it can be difficult to spread this over the face, but this is eased by dotting it more frequently than you would if you had Perfect Cover and then patting and blending from there. The great thing about it being so thick is that it lasts all day! I find that this has the longest-lasting coverage of any BB cream I have tried. While this BB cream is recommended for dry skin, I was also surprised that the cream itself feels far drier than any other BB cream I have tried. (Though most of the ingredient claims and anti-aging benefits are questionable; they seem a little old-fashioned and anecdotal...) But I found this beneficial anyway because I have combo-oily skin, and this BB cream, although a little heavy at first, has good oil control throughout the day; I have never had to blot. This may end up being a different case during the summer though when my sebum levels are much higher, in which case this BB cream may feel very, very heavy. The deal breaker for most people with this BB cream will be the limited color selection (as with most BB creams), but go on the green light if you find a match!
