Moisturizers -C.O. Bigelow - Extra Light Face Lotion [DISCONTINUED]
rated 4 of 5
AnonAnon217 5/22/2005 8:21:00 AM

Another rave review. I bought this solely based on the good reviews here on MUA. It's expensive for my tastes but I'll buy it again. It is a very light moisturizer; I wouldn't recommend for dry or sensitive skin. I find that if my skin is feeling dry then I need to use something with more substance, like Clean and Clear Shine Control Moisturizer. But the C.O. Bigelow is the best as far as shine control goes (admittedly, my C&C doesn't do all that much for shine, I just like it cause it moisturizers my skin well for an oil-free lotion). I only use this Bigelow stuff in the morning before I apply makeup. It helps keep my makeup fresh and I really notice how when used with a matte foundation, my skin is much less oily and shiny. Doesn't irritate my skin or make me break out at all. I would recommend this to anyone with oily, combination or acne-prone skin. I'll certianly be buying this again when I run out. EDIT: I think this lotion ended up breaking me out. I will only use it on really shiny spots like my nose from now on. Plus, it doesn't provide a enough moisture as a base for applying foundation.

Err . . . I don't know if I was even using the same product as every else . . . this was horrible for me! I have had such good luck with products based on reviews on MUA. I have no idea how I could have had such a bad experience with this one considering the great reviews of it on here. The first time I tried it I put less than a half-pea sized amount on my face overnight. The next day my skin started getting red, and then over the next few days I burned and peeled! I am not over-exaggerating one bit - my skin was falling off. My face was pink and the skin kept coming off in layers, I could see oil coming out of my pores five minutes after washing my face. I had to scrub my face with a pumice stone to get the flaked dead skin off just so I could go out in public. It was such a horrible experience. HANDS DOWN THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD WITH ANY SKIN CARE PRODUCT. It lasted a week and a half. To make matters worse, in the meantime I couldn't use any acne medications, so I broke out in cysts while I was waiting for my face to heal. I had to use an expensive healing lotion because no other moisturizer would soothe my irritated skin. It was a horrible experience. I shouldn't have tried it again, but I thought surely I must have used too much because the reviews on here are so great! So a couple weeks after that disaster, I tried it again, this time the tiniest amount, not even enough to thinly cover my skin, and I washed it off after six hours or so. Again, buring and peeling. WTF? Maybe I am allergic to BP? I have no idea how this product could have wreaked havoc on my face when so many others have had good luck with it. I hate to write a bad review but others must be warned! I will not touch this stuff with a pole now. EDIT: I haven't had the guts to try another benzoyl peroxide product since this disaster (I guess I may be one of the few allergic). But I found that sulfur-containing products have really been working for me. So if there are any more of ya'll who have trouble with BP, try sulfur. It's effective and much, MUCH less likely to cause irritation or peeling.

Liquid -Neutrogena - Skin Clearing Oil-Free Makeup
rated 2 of 5

I'm on my second bottle of this, after switching over from Healthy Skin makeup. I have mixed feelings about this foundation . . . the thing I love most about it is that it DID NOT MAKE ME BREAK OUT. A lot of makeup that I've tried in the past has made me breakout, but this didn't at all, not once! I actually think the added salicylic acid helped prevent breakouts for me. This inspired me to buy thee Neutrogena Healthy Skin powder too. My skin has done well with these. Although I've had good luck as far as breakouts go, I regret that (as other reviews have noted) this does NOT provide good coverage. It is very sheer and didn't cover my acne scars one bit. It's also not matifying at all, so I find I need quite a bit of powder to seal the deal. I'm searching for a nonacnegenic medium-coverage foundation to replace the Neutrogena, however I might continue to use this as a sheer foundation for very unspecial occasions when I only need very light coverage. Another prob I had with this is that I couldn't find a shade for my skin. I bought Softest Gold 40 which is a tad too dark and pinkish. All in all, I'd say if you are satisfied with light coverage are just looking for something that wont break you out, give this a try. EDIT: Changed to 2 lippies. You're better off going with Almay Clear Complexion Blemish Healing Makeup. It's a better quality foundation with similar coverage and has a much more realistic shade selection. Seriously, why are Neutrogena's makeup products all so orangey???

Masks -DDF - Sulfur Therapeutic Mask [DISCONTINUED]
rated 5 of 5
AnonAnon217 5/5/2005 4:16:00 AM

I love this mask. I bought it based on the MUA reviews. It's expensive for my tastes, but you only have to apply a thin layer so a tub last a long while. It absorbs oil, dries in about 5 minutes, and helps with acne. The downside is it does smell a bit like sulfur. Personally, the smell didn't bother me while I had the mask on (they do a pretty good job of masking the smell considering it's 10% sulfur!) but I did notice that my towel smelled of sulfur after I dried my face. No biggie though, I still think the mask is great. It's my new fave. I still use Queen Helene, but honestly, this mask is way better.

Hair -Kiehls - Hair Conditioner and Grooming Aid Formula 133

This leave-in conditioner seems like it work work well on all hair types. I have dry frizzy hair and I love that it tames my frizzies and makes my hair softer. If you have very dry or coarse hair, you might want to try Kiehls Creme with Silk Groom too. It's best applied to wet hair, although I have smoothed a teensy amount over my dry hair to get rid of frizzies without my hair getting greasy. I've never used it in place of condtioner, rather as a leave-in/style aid. Another great Kiehls product!

Treatments -Mario Badescu - Drying Lotion
rated 5 of 5
AnonAnon217 4/30/2005 4:30:00 PM

I've been using this for a little over a month, and have been very pleased with the results. I used it nightly according to the directions on the bottle (don't shake, use only on existing pimples!) I experienced no dryness from this, which is exceptional because I have typically become dry after using other acne products (especially BP and SA). I am surprised at the negative reviews. First off, when you buy ANY product please do not expect a miracle! This stuff works great, but it will not make your zit "disappear" overnight. It will take 2-3 days to reduce the zit to an insignificant size, but you will notice a difference after the first night. I am very pleased with this product, it is my new staple. I have recommended Drying Lotion to friends and they have had good results as well.

Masks -The Body Shop - Tea Tree Oil Face Mask

Ugh. I so wanted this mask to work because it had an invigorating and relaxing smell, and I liked that it didn't dry out after ten minutes. UNFORTUNATELY, this mask did not help my acne - in fact I think it made me break out. I would not recommend this to anyone with acne.

Moisturizers -Cetaphil - Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF15
rated 1 of 5
AnonAnon217 4/13/2005 10:54:00 PM

I tried this lotion twice because my dermatologist had recommended Cetaphil products. OUCH! I have acne-prone skin, but I have never been especially sensitive to any products. This lotion burned my skin. A few times I had to wash my face right after I used it because it hurt too much. The first time I tried it I made the mistake of putting it all over my face . . . the stuff got in my eyes and burned like nothing else. I couldn't let the stuff get within and inch of my eyes from then on. I don't know what all the rave is over Cetaphil, generally these products did not help my acne and this lotion certainly irritated my skin and made my acne worse. Be cautioned before you buy this product - as you can see from other reviews it can has a "warming effect" that can be burning and irritating to some. I have tried a lot of drugstore face lotions and this has been hands down the worst. I guess it's either a hit-or-miss product. Oh yeah, and this stuff DOES make you face look shiny and oily.

Cleansers -Clean & Clear - Continuous Control Acne Wash
rated 5 of 5
AnonAnon217 4/11/2005 9:47:00 PM

I have tried almost every drugstore product (including Cetaphil, St. Ive's, Queen Helene and other MUA HGs) and I have found C&C Continuous Control Acne Wash works best for me. I see a difference after the first couple days. It takes off makeup well and doesn't leave any residue, although it can be drying so use an oil-free moisturizer afterwards. This product won't clear me up by itself, but works well in conjunction with other products. I have had good luck using this cleanser along with C&C Oil Control Moisturizer, MB Drying Lotion and Aspirin Toner.
