Eyeliner -Almay - Amazing Lasting Eye Pencil
rated 4 of 5

I usually use liquid liner, but I needed a pencil to recreate a look I received in a makeover. I was so pleasantly surprised by this eyeliner. Smooth and even application, nice deep pigment, great staying power...I was so dreading the pulling and tugging that I formerly associated with pencils, and this stuff has redefined my idea of pencil liners. I also love the no-sharpening-ever design. One quality product!

Palettes -Sally Hansen - Color Case - NUDE
rated 4 of 5
sharopooks 5/18/2004 3:27:00 PM

I so wanted to like this palette but the glosses (and to a lesser extent, the shadows) are just not enough color for my medium toned skin (I'm an Asian MMM). When they say nude, they really mean nude. I was hoping to get away with that "all nudes" look but these aren't the colors for me to pull it off successfully; I looked noticeably washed out the second I got to work...my coworkers even said I looked sick and asked if I was feeling ok! HOWEVER, I can use just the blush with good results. The light rosy/brownish peach is quite possibly THE perfect, universally flattering blush, enough to raise my original rating of "3" to "4". I can also use the eyeshadows and blush to tone down bright eyeshadows for a muter look, or to neutralize blush and bronzers for use as subtle eyeshadows. So yeah, I've found uses for this, but I do not have the full palette satisfaction that some of you lucky, paler gals are enjoying. UPDATE - had to scrape the 2 lipcolors/glosses out because of gross crayon smell. Now I enjoy using the eyeshadows and blushes more.

Eye Shadow -Sue Devitt - Silky Matte & Silky Sheen Eyeshadow in Dreamtime Legend
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/18/2004 2:16:00 PM

This is a beautiful highlighting champagne/off-whitish color. The formula is smooth and long lasting, and the shimmery sheen can be appropriate for both day and night. I'm a MMM/GGG (depending on the season!) but I think everyone can use this color. Not the cheapest eyeshadow, but you do get the performance you pay for.

Eye Shadow -Sue Devitt - Silky Shadow in Cuba
rated 2 of 5

Lovely formula but the pretty pink was indiscernable on my MMM skin. Paler complexions would probably have more success with this shade. Maybe someone with medium skin like mine could use it alone, but I ordered it at the same time I ordered Dreamtime Legend (a frosty highlighting whitish champagne). Since each shade was doing basically the same thing, I returned this one.

Mascara -Maybelline - Lash Discovery Curved Brush
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/18/2004 2:00:00 PM

I love this mascara! It's more convenient to purchase than Defincils (not to mention easier on the wallet) and the mini-brush and formula make it a better choice for me than Great Lash (which was my steadfast drugstore choice until Lash Discovery). I have tiny Asian eyelashes that have been all but depleted by my teenage years of eyelash curler abuse and sleeping with makeup on. This mascara rediscovers my lashes. (Wait - Did I just say "rediscovers" during my review of Lash DISCOVERY? I am one un-original cornball! I'll sit down now...)

Eyeliner -Revlon - ColorStay Liquid Liner
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/18/2004 1:52:00 PM

This is my HG eyeliner. I wear this every day of my life (excluding weekends usually). The pen-type applicator makes this easy to apply and control (once you get the hang of it, if you normally don't use the pen-types) and it L-A-S-T-S. This isn't even waterproof and has outlasted other, so-called "waterproof" liquid liners. With some products, though I've found an HG product I love, I'll still try other brands and types for variety, but not with this. I'm sticking to this eyeliner, that's how proven this product is to me. I prefer Blackest Black. Icy Black is a shimmery gray/black, it doesn't last as long but it's nice for a change (haven't tried the other shades).

Loose Powders -Clarins - Loose Face Powder
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/18/2004 10:41:00 AM

WONDERFUL loose powder. The finish is great, the color match is perfect (I use the darker of the two transluscent shades on my MMM-Asian skin) and my skin looks amazing and velvety. I discovered this product quite accidentally. I needed a loose powder and went to an all-day department store beauty event. Normally I would have already checked the reviews on something before purchasing, but since I was getting a Clarins facial, I thought I should check out their loose powder before seeing the reviews (which are, not coincidentally, all favorable). I'm glad I did. I'm not a fan of the bulky packaging (it took a while for me to realize the top screws open, I just about pried the thing open!) but I'll tolerate it given the results.

Did not like this. Sat like chalk on my face. Wasn't sure if I got a shade too dark (medium), and the finish wasn't nice enough for me to buy the next lightest to find out.

Powder -Sephora - Compact Foundation
rated 4 of 5
sharopooks 5/15/2004 6:11:00 PM

I LOVE THIS PRODUCT. First off, it's available in so many colors, I found a perfect match (D30/Warm Beige). It's $18, a fraction of the price of say, Smashbox's wet/dry (and in more colors too), it covers superbly and feels great, and the packaging is cool (product on top, compartment below for the sponge with a mirror). My only regret is that titanium dioxide is the second ingredient listed; I'm looking for my wedding foundation and all the bridal boards say that titanium dioxide makes people white in photos. Otherwise, this compact is just about perfect! ETA: OK tried this again years later - it's not just about perfect, the coverage is rather light dry, & a bit cakey wet IF you overapply. This is still nice, though, but not as awesome as I initially raved it was.

Treatments (Eye) -Kiehls - Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado
rated 1 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 5:01:00 PM

Liked this at first...interesting consistency, not your typical moisturizer, felt more like a nurturing, non-migrating treatment (which was nice) than a cream. BUT I had the same problem as a reviewer below, I started breaking out! I gradually got a few small breakouts in my eye areas, and I NEVER get those! This is the second Kiehl's face product to break me out (the lip balm gave me whiteheads around my mouth). I do not have sensitive skin and I only break out occasionally in my T-zone. I'm a little more wary of Kiehl's face products now (the body stuff remains ok).

Concealers -Aveda - Conceal + Protect [DISCONTINUED]
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 4:17:00 PM

When I first bought this, I gave it 4 lippies. It's a nice-feeling formula (I like this consistency as opposed to a liquid - you get coverage and blendability) and the packaging is pretty neat - you can buy more than one shade and screw them together so you can travel with more than one shade attached as one as opposed to a bunch of separate containers. That's what I did, I'm using the darker shade (pecan) on blemishes (works great), and bamboo under my eyes (works ok). UPDATE - This stuff gets better and better to me. It makes a fine eyeshadow base. AND, it covered a bruise on my chin wonderfully, when my Two Faced Blenders couldn't. Still doesn't cover my eye circles perfectly but it works good enough and I've grown to love this and its multiple uses. ANOTHER UPDATE - CanNOT believe they discontinued this... just when it was becoming a staple to me! Is that the sound of my heart sinking??

Concealers -Cover Girl - Invisible Concealer
rated 3 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 2:44:00 PM

After years of avoiding liquid concealers due to ineffectiveness, I was ready to try again. I really liked this at first, covered surprisingly well, blendable...but I saw myself in sunlight and the undertones are too pink. For me, this looks good in office light, but unnatural when outside. Even though I unfortunately slave away enough in the office to get away with wearing this, I'm still looking.

Lip Treatments -Kiehls - Lip Balm #1
rated 1 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 1:39:00 PM

This was part of a gift basket I received. I was happy to have a chance to check this much-hyped product out, as the chances of me actually shelling out the money to try this were slim. Worked fine at first, nothing special, but it worked. Then I got a whitehead around my lips. Then another! Then yet another. Ordered Avon lip balm and never looked back.

Moisturizers -Kiehls - Ultra Facial Moisturizer
rated 1 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 1:25:00 PM

This was part of a gift basket but since it has no SPF, I tried to find different uses for it. Tried using it as a hand cream, not moisturizing enough. Was going to use it as a night cream but then TWO other Kiehl's products started breaking me out. So I tossed this.

Moisturizers -L'Oreal - Plentitude Age Perfect
rated 5 of 5
sharopooks 5/14/2004 1:20:00 PM

This is great stuff. Last year when the weather got colder, my moisturizer (Olay Complete) no longer performed on my combination skin...my dry cheeks remained flaky. Purchased this and it worked like a dream. The packaging says for "Mature Skin", but I'm in my 30s and it worked great on my combo skin. I thought I would have to switch again to something lighter when the weather got warmer, but I find that I can keep using this through the springtime and it's not too heavy even on my sometimes-oily T-zone (the dead of summer is another story). Moisturizes wonderfully and has SPF. I love it.
