Polishes -OPI - My Private Jet
theminx 6/8/2011 12:53:00 AM
This review is for the non-holo version of My Private Jet (NL B59). After seeing all the gorgeous pictures of the holo version of My Private Jet, I was gutted to find out that it was no longer available. I decided to settle for the non-holo version. I figured that the holo version was so gorgeous, surely even the non-holo version would have a touch of the same fabulousness. I was so wrong! The colour is just a boring, flat, deep greyed brown with shimmer. It doesn't exactly look terrible on me but it's just a big yawn. The colour isn't deep enough for the "edgy" dark nails look, nor does it have enough shimmer to glisten and shine. Wish I could return this to the store.

Eyeliner -Lancome - Artliner
theminx 5/31/2011 1:56:00 PM
I bought this in Noir in Singapore for about SGD$30 (approx USD$24). I've been using Mac Fluidlines for years, but I thought I'd try a liquid liner for a change. The packaging is beautiful and sleek. The applicator is just amazing - sort of a hybrid between a felt-tip and a tiny brush and very easy to control to get a thin or thick line. Last all day with no flakes or smudges in 100% humidity and oily skin. Comes off easily with Lancome Bifacils waterproof eye makeup remover. Unfortunately the liquid is so shiny its almost reflective, and that makes it a bit tricky to put on (I need to check various angles/lighting to ensure both sides are even). When it dries it stays a little shiny as well, which I'm not keen on. But the biggest issue I have with this is that no matter how long I allow this the liner to dry and no matter what primer or eyeshadow I use, my eyeshadow transfers to the liner, almost as if the liner has some magnetic effect on the eyeshadow on my lid. Today I wore Benefit Skinny Jeans eyeshadow (a taupey silver) with my Artliner and within an hour my liner had turned silvery. Also, I find that if I go over the liner with a pencil liner for touch-ups, it gets rubbed off instead of intensifying the liner. I will not repurchase.

Polishes -OPI - Not Like The Movies
theminx 2/6/2011 2:47:00 AM
This purple-green duochrome looks beautiful in the bottle, and I couldn't stop looking at my nails after I put this on, simply because the colour was so unique. But after a day of wearing it, I had to admit it was just unflattering on my NC50 skintone. I can get away with it if I put Black Shatter over it though. I'm giving this a 2 because the product quality is excellent - smooth application, lasts well and the colour is truly unique. EDIT: I've upgraded this to 4 lippies 'cos I found it looks so much better on me when I have short nails, as I do now.

Polishes -OPI - Black Shatter
theminx 1/14/2011 11:08:00 AM
I came across this by chance today at the OPI counter in the Katy Perry collection display and I just HAD to have it. The tag on the bottle describes it as a 'deep asphalt black with a "shattered" texture'. The instructions read: "Apply one coat of Black Shatter over any completely dry Katy shade for an irresistible "shattered" affect'. Have to agree with the description and the instructions. I found if my nail polish isn't 100% dry, Black Shatter would drag at the polish below and end up messy. This goes on like a regular black creme polish (albeit a streaky one), but wait a few seconds and the polish starts to take on the shattered texture. It takes a minute or two for the shatters to properly separate, so be patient. Love the fact that it's a sooty matte black. I tried this over OPI DS Coronation, OPI Ali's Big Break and OPI DS Design and OPI Not Like The Movies (also from the Katy Perry collection) and the last combo worked best by a mile. With the other polishes, I couldn't get the 'right' shatter effect. Not sure if its my lack of skills or the polish wasn't completely dry though. I'm thrilled I bought this!

Eye Shadow -Christian Dior - Dior Impression Cuir Leather Couture For The Eyes #001
theminx 11/18/2010 7:55:00 AM
I admit I only bought this because it looked so pretty. I tried to justify the high price tag by thinking I couldn't go far wrong with this, being an NC50 brown-eyeshadow loving girl. Well I didn't know how wrong brown could go until I got this. All 3 colors go on muddy on me, and I don't find the shadows very pigmented. I do use the middle color - the most shimmery one - as an all over lid color sometimes and it does the job but it's nothing to write home about. I'm just glad I paid only half the retail price of on strawberry.net.

Polishes -OPI - Designer Series - DS Mystery
theminx 11/18/2010 7:44:00 AM
One of my all-time favorite OPI polishes. Two coats gives my nails a almost-black maroon color with maroon sparkles, 3 coats just makes the color more intense. Doesn't dry on nails as fast as other DS polishes I've tried though. My only complaint is that this chips easily, as with other OPI DS and Suede polishes. If black polish hasn't worked for you, but you still want something with a similar look, this is a good bet.

Masks -Clarins - White Plus Intensive Whitening Mask
theminx 6/24/2010 11:13:00 AM
I've been a big fan of Clarins White Plus range for years (I swear by the White Plus Total Whitening Essence). I put off buying the White Plus mask for a long time though, because of the seemingly high price. The product comes in a box containing 8 supposedly single application tubes of 8ml each. But unless you're plastering this on with a spatula, you can get at least 4-6 applications from one tube, and since you're using it only one or twice a week, it's actually pretty good value for money. This white cream rinse-off mask is great as a little pick-me up after cleansing and exfoliation - I can definitely see that my skin looks more refreshed after using it. I can't comment on the whitening effect of this product alone as I'm using several Clarins White Plus items at the moment (day cream, night cream and essence) - but I can report that the combination of all the products has made a dramatic difference to my skin in less than a month - it glows and never looks dull, and has even made my fine lines on my forehead and neck disappear.

Treatments (Eye) -La Roche Posay - Redermic for Eyes
theminx 6/24/2010 10:42:00 AM
Decided to try this out because I got it very cheap at a warehouse sale. I usually use Lancome or Shiseido eye creams, but bought this as a standby. The product itself a yellowish gel-cream that comes in a white 15 ml tube, which I like because it's more hygienic than a tub. I've been using this cream exclusively for a couple of months now (both day & night) and my eye area looks much smoother and refreshed. It's particularly great for day use under makeup because it never causes my concealer to crease. Overall I've seen good results comparable or even better to my more expensive Lancome and Shiseido eye creams, and I will definitely repurchase at full price.

Sunscreen -Unlisted Brand - Sunplay sunscreen lotion SPF 130 PA++
theminx 6/24/2010 1:44:00 AM
I bought this on sale for the equivalent of about USD$11 in Singapore. Comes in a cute, palm-sized 35g/31ml plastic bottle. I use this on face (under makeup) and body (over moisturizer). This is awesome stuff. Comes out as a white runny liquid, but dries to a clear finish with absolutely no white cast on my dark NC50 skintone. Not oily nor drying on my combination skin. Easy to apply because its very liquid-y. After 4 hours in the scorching sun, I only tanned very minimally - that saying a lot considering I tan very easily. Two downsides though - it works out out pretty expensive is used on face and body regularly; and it definitely clogs my pores a little, so I don't use it everyday, only on weekends/holidays if I'm outdoors a lot.

Mascara -Maybelline - volume express hypercurl
theminx 6/24/2010 1:26:00 AM
I'm totally sold on this mascara. I was faithfully devoted to Lancome mascaras for over 15 years until I discovered this. My lashes are naturally curly but all my Lancome mascaras make them droop, and I've always been too lazy to curl my lashes. This mascara holds my natural curl all day and if I brush more on the tips I get that wide-eyed look all day. This is also my first waterproof mascara and I'm thrilled I can finally define my lower lashline without any smudging. I just press the wand gently against my lower lashline and I get instant definition! No flakiness, no smudges. Love it. I'm on my second tube now.

Sunscreen -La Roche Posay - Anthelios Xl SPF 50+ Fluide Extreme (for face)
theminx 2/26/2010 11:35:00 PM
Since I'm dark skinned (NC50) my main concern always with sunscreen is that it will leave a white cast. This absolutely does not, quite amazing when you consider it's a white-as-snow runny liquid. The SA told me to pat it on rather than rub it in - and that's the only way I can get it to work without balling up or pilling. It doesn't leave the face oily, is extremely lightweight, no overwhelming fragrance and is generally pleasant to use. I tan easily, and this did prevent a tan when I was out in the sun all day. No complaints here, and since it's cheaper than my usual Clarins UV Plus Day Screen (which does leave a slight white cast) I will repurchase for sure.

Polishes -OPI - Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees Suede
theminx 2/26/2010 10:31:00 PM
I am absolutely in love with this polish. The colour is a matte-ish gunmental gray with subtle sparkle that's a great, more edgy alternative to black. OPI does say in their display and on the little tag on the bottle that their suede polishes aren't as long wearing as their regular polishes - so I can't fault them that it chips within 1-2 days. However it's so easy to apply and dries in literally seconds that it's no hassle to re-apply or touch up every other day. The brush is awesome too. I don't know if it's the OPI pro-wide brush or not, but the brush makes this so easy to apply even for clumsy hands like mine. For the real 'suede' effect it's recommended not to use a topcoat, but I suppose you can to make it last longer and for a different look if you do use one. This is one of the few polishes that I can see myself finishing the entire bottle. I'm NC50 for reference.

Styling Products -Dove - Dove Advance Care Sheer Moisture Replenishing Mist Spray
theminx 10/26/2008 8:10:00 AM
Wow, this really does deliver as a detangler. Recently I switched shampoos and got major tangles on my straight, dry hair. A few spritzes of this took care of that easily. My hair looked a lot more moisturised and I think it looked a little shinier. I used quite a lot of this but it doesn't weigh hair down or look greasy. However, my major complaint is the scent - it's positively overwhelming! After spraying I need to get out of the room asap of I feel like I'm choking on it. Even after 10 minutes the scent still hangs in the air.

Cleansers -Clarins - Water Comfort One Step Cleanser
theminx 10/13/2008 11:02:00 AM
I'm liking this althought it's a totally superfluous product (for me anyway). I'm reviewing the version with Peach Essence Water for Normal to Dry skin. This is quite pleasant used in the mornings when you don't have makeup to clean off, and just need a little light cleansing. I normally use a foaming cleanser and toner, but since I for a couple of 50ml GWPs, I decided to skip toner and use this for a while. I like the peach scent, but I can imagine some would find it overwhelming. I attempted to remove make-up with it once - after going through 3 cotton squares soaked with this stuff, my makeup Studiofix foundation still wasn't completely off. Plus my face started stinging and it wastes a LOT of product. So in my opinion, if you're looking for a makeup remover, look elsewhere. There so many more effective make-up removers in the market that do the job with less effort. I wouldn't buy the full size 200ml bottle for retail (SGD$46.50/US$31.60), but I will use up the GWPs that come my way. Basically - nice to have, but totally non-essential.

Eyes -Ardell - Duralash
theminx 10/13/2008 12:13:00 AM
I'm having so much fun with these! I bought the short black flare ones (SGD$8.95/USD$6) together with with Ardell's Lash Grip Adhesive (also SGD$8.95/USD$6). The pack contains 56 individual lashes, and are re-usable if you're careful handling them. I start by placing one close to the outer lashes, then another one next to it, and finally one in the middle of my lashline. Takes some practice to get the application right, but from someone with zero experience with false lashes, I think it's not that hard. Nobody can guess I'm using falsies, it just looks like I've got naturaly lush lashes combined with a great mascara. I only used these at night though. The lashes have a sheen that is unnatural comparaed to my own lashes, it would be a dead giveaway in daylight I think. I like the lash glue too. Comes out white, but dries clear, and stayed put for over 5 hours.
