Eye Shadow -Annabelle - Eyeshadow #246 (Nugget)
rated 5 of 5
amarock 8/28/2005 7:06:00 PM

I bought this colour after reading a review somewhere that lists less expensive versions of high-end makeup... apparently, this colour is very similar to Nars "Orgasm" blush, so I bought this solely for the purpose of wearing it on my cheeks. It a very pretty colour as a blush and gives me a nice natural glow during the summer. I've own this eyeshadow for a while now and have only worn it on my cheeks, and just the other day I decided to give this a try on my eyes - it's very pretty as an eyeshadow as well! It has great staying power and applies very nicely. I like the flip-top container, but the best part is that this fits into my MAC eyeshadow pan, so I depotted this and put it in my 15-pan. I will try another Annabelle eyeshadow if they have a unique colour that I don't already own.

Eye Shadow -Annabelle - Eye Dust - Golden Pink
rated 5 of 5
amarock 8/28/2005 6:57:00 PM

Gorgeous shade! I was about to pick up just another Annabelle eyeshadow in light pink when I spotted the eye dusts... it was either this colour or "Prism" and I decided on this one because it was the last one left in the display - I'm glad I did! I don't own anything like this in my eyeshadow collection - I love how it catches both the gold and pink in certain light. It has great staying power for a shimmer type of product. I really like the packaging - there's the option of using the hole, or simply unscrewing the entire lid to access the powder. I dip my fine eyeshadow brush in the hole and mix the powder with a bit of water on the back of hand before I apply onto my lids. Smooth, finely milled powder that applies like a dream! I may try the "Prism" shade next... I doubt if I'll ever run out of this colour, there's a lot of product in the little pot, and I only use a tiny bit each time. This cost me about $5 CAD, which is a great deal!

Lip Gloss -Cargo - Machu Picchu lipgloss
rated 4 of 5
amarock 8/27/2005 8:56:00 PM

I was curious about this product for a while now... so I finally got my hands on this pot off eBay. I'm glad that I didn't pay full price for this lipgloss because then I'd be angry... the major bad point of this lipgloss is the lack of staying power. It disappears from my lips in a matter of minutes (maybe this is why Cargo sells this in such a large container? Since you have to reapply constantly!) All is not lost, however, because I have learned to pair this with a coat of clear gloss, which does help the colour last longer. I do like that this product is not sticky or gooey. I gave this a high rating because I really love the colours - I own so many lipglosses that I tend to keep buying the same colours over and over (just how many YLBB colours does a girl need?) But these two colours are unique and the shimmer is gorgeous and subtle - both colours are very wearable. I have very pigmented lips naturally, and these do a great job of enhancing what Mother Nature gave me!

Mascara -Almay - One Coat Mascara (Thickening)
rated 4 of 5
amarock 8/27/2005 5:35:00 PM

I'm glad I tried this mascara - it's a good everyday mascara that doesn't flake on me. Applies nicely and not clumpy. I also like the fact that it's not too runny and doesn't smudge while I'm waiting for it to dry. Once it's dry, my eyelashes feel weightless and soft, as if I don't have any mascara on at all. My main complaint about this product is that it tends to leave a faint hint of raccoon eyes at the end of the day (but not as bad as other mascaras do) but the odd thing is, it doesn't wash off all that easily even with eye makeup remover. I'm not too fond of the brush either - it's a bit too fat for my liking. I do like how much product is in the tube - nice generous size.

Highlighters -Wet 'n' Wild - MegaGlo Face Illuminator [DISCONTINUED]
rated 3 of 5
amarock 8/25/2005 9:24:00 AM

I bought this item based on the positive reviews - I have it in the colour "Rosy". It's not a bad product per se, for the price and the quality that Wet n' Wild represents. Since purchasing this cream blush, I've gone on to try other more pricy cream blushes and the textures of those are much nicer. But, you get what you pay for, right? I took 2 lippies off because: 1) the stickiness of the product - I get my hair stuck to my cheeks every time I wear it 2) the cheap waxy smell of the product is strong. The reason why I still gave this 3 lippies is because the product does have good staying power, the colour is nice, and it is inexpensive. It took me a little practice to get the hang of applying it to my cheeks with a very light hand, and blend blend blend! I am going to buy the "Toasty" colour to see how I like that one. *EDIT: I got the "Toasty" colour the other day and I like it more than the "Rosy" one. "Toasty" matches the tone of my skin and gives a natural glow to my face. Now I'm curious to try "Sun kissed"...

Concealers -Sally Hansen - Clear-It Concealer in Light Beige
rated 3 of 5
amarock 8/10/2005 6:03:00 PM

I read about Cornsilk product in a magazine and I remembered that when I was young, I had Cornsilk foundation, which was pretty good (and inexpensive). So, for about a third of the price of a MAC concealer (NC20), I decided to give this a try. It covers blemishes well, but I find it very hard to blend for undereye circles, even with moisturizer underneath. I also found that it tends to settle in fine lines and by the end of the day, it's mostly worn off. Another two gripes I have about this concealer - it was hard to decide on a shade to choose because of the blue colour of the cap - would it have hurt to use a clear cap? I almost bought the 'no colour', and there weren't any testers at the store display. The other gripe is the smell of the product - it's waxy and chemically. Overall, it's a good product, I will continue to use this to cover spots, but I won't repurchase simply because I know there are better products out there.

Sunscreen -Hawaiian Tropic - Hawaiian Tropic Oil-Free Faces SPF 30, Sheer Reflections Formula [DISCONTINUED]
rated 3 of 5
amarock 8/2/2005 3:57:00 PM

I did a bit of research on MUA before buying this product, and I'm glad I took the risk with this brand! Bonus for me that it was on sale when I bought it. I was *this* close to buying the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry, but I was concerned about it interacting with my foundation and peeling (as I'd read in the reviews). The Hawaiian Tropic Face suncreen goes on smoothly and gives a nice glow to the skin. I apply the suncreen at least 1/2 hr prior to using my foundation so that it absorbs in properly - I use L'Oreal True Match, which doesn't contain sunscreen, and the combination of the two on my face gives a nice glow. I've been wearing this for about a month and it doesn't break me out, and it does a great job of protecting my skin from the sun (no more sunglass tan lines on my face!) I also love the pump bottle. I took off 1 lippy because of the shininess of the product, and the pump sometimes dispenses the cream all over the place! EDIT Dec 2005: Downgraded the review because of the presence of oxybenzone/benzophenone-3 (See username "sunscreens" for info). I bought Ombrelle SPF 30 and it's better than this.

Treatments -Unlisted Brand - Witchcraft Nail Hardener
rated 5 of 5
amarock 7/20/2005 10:20:00 AM

This has been a staple of mine for years now. I use it both as a basecoat and topcoat or I just wear it alone for a clear coat. It is very good at what it does - hardens my nails and help them grow. I do find that the product gets gooey and thick pretty fast, and I don't like the packaging much. I've also noticed recently that the price has been going up and it's now nearly $9 Cdn per bottle. I have not seen any other product that works as well as this so I'll continue to purchase this.

Masks -Queen Helene - Mint Julep Masque
rated 4 of 5
amarock 7/19/2005 2:24:00 PM

I've been wanting to try this product ever since reading about it on MUA, but I live in Canada and could not find this product anywhere! Thankfully, a friend who lives in the US sent me a tube because I was so desperate! I've been using it twice a week for about a month now and so far it has been fine. Not the miracle product that I'd thought it would be, but since my skin is already pretty good, I didn't expect it to drastically alter my skin. I really like the mint scent when applied, but I don't like the after-smell, which is quite chemically. It's a great masque for the hot summer months because of the cooling, tingling effects. I think this tube will last me a while... and then I'll have to bug my friend to send me more. Off chance, does anyone know where to find this product in Canada? Thanks! *EDIT: I've had several helpful MUA-ers message me about where to find this product, and I've finally found it at a nearby healthfood store! Thanks everybody, I can always count on MUA-ers!

Skincare - Body -Johnson & Johnson - Head to Toe baby wash
rated 5 of 5
amarock 7/19/2005 2:09:00 PM

This was a great tip from MUA users! I have been using this to wash off my makeup for about 2 months now. I have combo skin that is sensitive, so I was a bit apprehensive about using a body wash on my face, but I've experienced no irritation with this product. And it removes makeup really well without making my skin dry and tight. I use it to wash my makeup brushes as well. The scent isn't the best, but I'll tolerate it because I like the pump bottle and the low price!

Concealers -MAC - Select Moisturecover
rated 3 of 5
amarock 6/25/2005 1:58:00 PM

Excellent coverage and natural colour matching. The MA suggested this rather than my usual MAC Studio Finish Concealer which was too heavy and drying in the wintertime. It blends really well and stays all day. EDITED Dec 19, 2006: I think MAC has reformulated this - my new tube has a thinner consistency and doesn't cover my under eye circles as well. I am on the search for a new concealer now.

Eye Makeup Remover -Rimmel - Gentle Eye Make Up Remover
rated 5 of 5
amarock 6/11/2005 4:59:00 PM

I really like this remover, since it's oil-free and odourless. I don't wear waterproof mascara (just the regular kind) so it easily removes all traces of my eye makeup. Great price & packaging. I would definitely repurchase. UPDATE: I still love this stuff - nothing compares to how effective yet gentle it is! There are eye makeup removers out in the market for 3X the price and they don't do half as good a job as Rimmel's! I will continue buying this - a bottle lasts about 4 months for me with daily use. It's about $6 Cdn and I try to stock up when there are sales.

Mascara -Estee Lauder - MagnaScopic Maximum Volume Mascara
rated 3 of 5
amarock 6/9/2005 7:22:00 PM

Received this item as GWP and although it has some good qualities, overall, it's not worth the price. I found it did have good stay power and it did lengthen my lashes significantly. However, it made my lashes clump together and took a long time to dry, and it tended to flake throughout the day.

Eye Shadow -MAC - Jest Eyeshadow
rated 5 of 5
amarock 3/18/2005 1:38:00 AM

A nice subtle peachy colour with a luminous glow, very neutral and goes with just about everything. It's a staple in my makeup kit - I use it nearly everyday to highlight the inner corners and the centres of my eyelids. The pot will probably last me quite a while since I use so little of it each time.

Gels/Soaps -Neutrogena - Rainbath Shower Gel
rated 5 of 5
amarock 3/17/2005 11:31:00 PM

I absolutely love the natural clean smell of Rainbath. It's so soothing to lather this up! I use a bath mitt with this to scrub and lather at the same time. It moisturizes very well and the light scent stays with me all day. I only wish that it was less expensive!
