Liquid -Revlon - ColorStay Stay Natural Makeup
Janay 8/28/2005 7:51:00 PM
I have been using ColorStay Stay Natural in Buff Chamois for a few years now, and it is my HG foundation. I like it better than the higher-end foundations I've tried, including Lancome Adaptive. This foundation covers both my hyperpigmentation/melasma and red spots from acne, provides sun protection with SPF 15, and stays put for many hours. I have, however, noticed that as I've gotten older and less oily, this foundation seems to be a bit heavy and mask-like on me. I plan to check out some of the mineral makeup lines but will continue to use this foundation until finding a suitable alternative.

Bronzers -Wet 'n' Wild - Bronzer
Janay 8/28/2005 7:37:00 PM
I took Paula Begoun's advice and tried this bronzer in the Light/Medium shade. This is now my HG bronzer. It gives me a truly tanned look without the juvenile glitter/shimmer, it's dirt cheap, and one container lasts for a very long time.

Bronzers -Maybelline - Maybelline Bronzer - SunLight
Janay 8/28/2005 7:26:00 PM
Sun Light proved to be too shimmery with too little pigment for my liking. I'd rather have a more matte bronzer that makes me look tan instead of shiny. I won't buy this again.

Eye Shadow -Max Factor - Nude Scene #150
Janay 8/28/2005 7:03:00 PM
Nude Scene #150 is the perfect neutral for me, and it works well as a base for other shadows. I have deep set eyes and oily eye lids, and this shadow lasts several hours before creasing.

Fragrances -Estee Lauder - Beautiful
Janay 8/28/2005 6:43:00 PM
Yet another floral fragrance that fights with my body chemistry and sits on top of my skin, annoying me, until I scrub it off. This scent is simply too strong for me. I agree with some of the previous posters that perhaps heady florals have had their day and are not appropriate for present day, especially considering the increase in allergy and asthma cases.

Fragrances -Estee Lauder - Beyond Paradise
Janay 8/28/2005 6:31:00 PM
Gorgeous packaging. I respect the vision behind this fragrance and am impressed by the variety of notes that were used. But this "prismatic floral" is too heady for me and proved to be a direct route to a migraine, and it appears that I am not alone. To all who adore this fragrance, please apply it lightly so as to not offend those around you.

Fragrances -Estee Lauder - White Linen
Janay 8/28/2005 5:57:00 PM
My Grandmother always purchased White Linen gift sets for me when she was alive. I did not have the heart to tell her that I disliked the fragrance (yes, I'm a coward, but she was a sensitive person and would have been very disappointed). The aldehydes, amber, and everything in between worked together to give me a headache. Interestingly, from a distance, White Linen can smell good on other people, so I gave it two lippies.

Fragrances -Calvin Klein - CKbe
Janay 8/28/2005 5:45:00 PM
I bought this fragrance during mid-swoon, about one minute after getting sprayed by the tester. The top notes are exquisite - bergamot, juniper berry, mandarin, mint, lavender & white musk. Unfortunately, things went downhill on the drydown. It must be a combination of my body chemistry and my overly keen sense of smell, but all I could detect after awhile was an acrid, bitter, resinous scent. I kept the bottle and continued to try it every once in awhile to see if it would smell better. No luck. That was my first hard lesson in fragrance testing - don't buy it until you've worn it for a few hours to experience the evolution of the fragrance on your skin.

Fragrances -Calvin Klein - Obsession
Janay 8/28/2005 5:25:00 PM
I've tried to like this EDP, but apparently, it does not work with my body chemistry. The coriander and oakmoss drown out the rest of the fragrance. But I can't give it a terrible rating, because it often smells great on other women, especially when they do not apply it with a garden hose. Moderation, ladies....

Fragrances -Calvin Klein - CK One
Janay 8/28/2005 5:11:00 PM
I received CK One as a gift in the mid-1990s and wore it quite a bit, like the rest of the US population. I then got weary of smelling it everywhere and gave my partially-empty bottle away. This is actually a pleasant, clean fragrance when applied with a light hand, and it has decent lasting power. The problem is that the person wearing it becomes desensitized to the fragrance and tends to overapply it and reapply it throughout the day because he/she thinks that it has worn off, thus offending those around him/her. With that said, it is still an artfully-blended EDT that I hope to enjoy again someday.

Blush -L'Oreal - Feel Naturale Blush- Mauvelous
Janay 8/28/2005 4:45:00 PM
As with many of my cosmetics choices, I relied on MUA to select this blush and could not be happier. Mauvelous is a perfect summer shade for me as it shows up on my tanned face (I use Charmed Peach to give me some color when I do not have a tan). I don't even remember how long ago I first opened this blush container - I use it everyday and have hardly made a dent in it. What a bargain!

Blush -L'Oreal - Feel Naturale in Charmed Peach
Janay 8/28/2005 4:35:00 PM
I bought this blush on the recommendation of other MUAers and am thrilled. My skin has olive undertones, and with my brown hair and eyes, this neutral peach blush looks great. Of course, I don't use the brush that comes with the blush in favor of a good blush brush. This is such a soft color that it is difficult to overapply.

Fragrances -Coty - Emeraude
Janay 8/28/2005 4:20:00 PM
Emeraude was my grandmother's signature fragrance, and I'll always associate it with her. My unsophisticated nose did not appreciate the spicy notes of this fragrance when I was a child, so I decided to try it for myself as an adult. Funny, it does not smell like I remember. In fact, it seems to be a very disjointed fragrance (not well blended). The notes seem to be jagged and harsh, making for an unpleasant sensory experience. That is a shame, as this is supposed to be a classic Coty fragrance. I wonder if it was reformulated somewhere along the way?

Fragrances -Coty - jovan white musk
Janay 8/28/2005 3:36:00 PM
Jovan White Musk for Women was a staple in my perfume wardrobe throughout my 20s. I wore it year-round and always liked the way it smelled on other people. After finishing a bottle, I did not replace it and went on to try other fragrances. In a nostalgic moment, I recently tried a tester at the mall and was not so happy with the fragrance. The aldehyde, ylang-ylang and amber notes were a bit much, and I decided that this is no longer a good fragrance for me. More power to those who like White Musk - it still smells good on most other people, and it is difficult to overapply.

Eye Shadow -Maybelline - Liquid Eyes in Eternal Expresso
Janay 8/28/2005 3:17:00 PM
I purchased Eternal Espresso after having great success with All Day Cafe, in spite of my oily eyelids. Unfortunately, Eternal Espresso does not last but a few hours on me before creasing. That's too bad, because it is a very pretty neutral with some shimmer.
