Foundations -Cover Girl - Covergirl and Olay Tone Rehab 2 in 1 Foundation
rated 3 of 5

I bought this product on a whim because I had never seen it before, was browsing cosmetics trying to remember what it was I needed (it wasn't foundation but what the heck) and it was raining so I wasn't in any hurry to make that mad dash for the car. Pretty much all I can think of to say about it is "meh." It's ok, I found the coverage to be very, very sheer so I ended up layering another foundation over it. The pump is great, the scent is lovely, coverage seems to last all day, didn't break me out and being such a sheer coverage, it's pretty easy to guess at your color, I got it right the first try. Don't believe any of the hype, it's just a plain, no nonsense light foundation. If you need to cover discoloration, red spots, freckles, etc, look elsewhere. My skin is getting dry and this foundation felt nice and emollient. For someone with perfect skin, I recommend this product.

Hair Color -Garnier - Olia
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 3/16/2013 8:17:00 PM

This review is for the color Light Natural Auburn. I read all the reviews prior to using and I must say, I was a bit scared of the outcome. But, I had already bought the color before reading the reviews and since at least a few of them were positive, I took the plunge. My hair is naturally red but since I am 51 years old, all the red is gone and is replaced by a dullish reddish brown on the ends and my new growth is without color, that gunmetal gray that is so ugly. I've been coloring my hair for years in any brand of lightest golden brown, which always pulls red on me and is fine, but I wanted to use something new to try and make my hair redder. I hesitate to try this because any haircolor that has "auburn" in the title, for some reason, turns my hair purple. Every...stinking.... time. If I go darker than lightest golden brown, my hair will turn nearly black. But, being the adventurous soul that I am, I went with Olia in Light Natural Auburn because the color is so pretty on the box. I didn't use the applicator, due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews, and mixed using the bowl and brush method. I bought two boxes of product because my hair is thick and just below my bra strap. It mixed easily. I applied it to my roots and left on about 18 minutes, then used nearly all the rest of the product left in the bowl for the ends of my hair, left on for about 9 more minutes. It rinsed very easily, to my surprise. After rinsing, I shampooed my hair to make sure all the color was out, then conditioned using the included conditioner. My hair is soft, a natural vibrant red and just what I wanted. I can't figure out why everyone else has had such a negative experience. I even liked the gloves. Not only were they not tight, they were a little big. I must have mutantly small hands or something. I just now colored so I can't comment on the longevity of staying power but I don't expect much, all the reds fade fast. If it fades unusually fast, I will update this review. All in all, I had a very positive experience and highly recommend.

Skincare - Face -Olay - Pro-X Clear Acne Protocol
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 7/19/2012 12:51:00 PM

I'm suddenly having serious skin problems that I've never had before. Growing up, reaching puberty, no pimples. Going through 20's, 30's and 40's, skin getting dry but no major problems. BOOM here comes age 50, menopause and a greeeeasy, oil spill, pimply disaster of a face. Not to mention the moustache. Ugh. Time to search for new products to manage the aging skin. Saw Olay Pro-X Clear at Walmart and decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Didn't dry out my skin at all, despite using the products twice a day. My skin thankfully cleared up a little, but not completely. ANYTHING was an improvement so I'm not expecting miracles. First I use the Skin Clearing Complexion Renewing cleanser (why do they have to have such long names that make ridiculous promises?) My face doesn't look particularly renewed but it's definitely cleared up. Then I used a thin smear of the treatment lotion, pretty much all over my face, then the moisturizer, which is a gel. My only complaint is that the products are fragrance free. I like a strong clean scent with my facial products. All in all, I'm happy, at least I can go out of the house without looking like a pimply faced teenager with wrinkles, gray hair and a moustache.

Liquid -Maybelline - SuperStay Makeup - New Version
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 7/18/2012 7:24:00 AM

To start my review, I need to say that I'm in major menopause. I was using estrogen hormone replacement but found out due to a blood clotting issue, I had to suddenly stop taking it, which made my face break out horribly. My skin has always been very dry but suddenly, I have an oil slick on my face. I don't have to worry about mosquitoes because if they land on my face, they skid right off. My regular makeup was too emollient for my new faux puberty skin so I was on the search for something new and this make up fills the bill nicely. I had a little trouble getting the correct color but settled on Natural Beige, which is nearly an exact match. I'm not having any trouble with it staying in place from very early in the morning (2:30 a.m. I don't sleep well either) until about 7:30 in the evening when I remove it. I'm not sweating it off during those annoying hot flashes, either. The coverage is darn good, too, it covers all my new zits pretty well, with the addition of a setting powder on top. All in all, I will continue using, until my face goes back to my normal sahara dryness, if that ever happens. I do recommend this product!

Hair Removal -Gillette - Venus Pro Skin
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 5/16/2012 6:30:00 AM

If you can't stand the thought of waxing or have tried it and can't stand the pain, then this is the razor for you! It makes your legs very smooth, you get a nice close shave, without having to use soap or shave cream. It has the soap/cream built in on top and bottom of the blades so you get plenty of slip, even on the underarms. I haven't tried it on the bikini line, I use nair for that area. I highly recommend this razor and I'm going to buy one for all 4 of my daughters to try.

Deodorants -Donna Karan - Cashmere Mist Deodorant
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 3/12/2012 4:40:00 AM

Ok, ladies, I've found it, the HG deodorant/antiperspirant. Being a profuse sweater, I have to be very careful about my deodorant. I was standing at the Dillards lingerie counter checking out and they had this on the display. It smelled heavenly and I asked the salesgirl what she knew about it. She said she loved it and it never let her down. All I needed to know so I bought one, to the tune of $18. Put it on that night before bed and nearly couldn't sleep because the perfume in the deo was so strong. Not one to give up, I put it on again the next morning after my shower and shave (it did not sting or hurt my skin, applying it right after shaving) and the scent didn't seem nearly so overwhelming. Kept me dry and comfortable all day, with a hint of the scent lingering. I love it so much that I decided to do some research and see if there were any other high-end stick deodorants in my favorite perfumes. No such luck, which is a darn shame. I will continue to use this deo and will probably buy my daughters and sister each one so they can enjoy it, too. Highly recommend!

Mascara -Maybelline - XXL PRO 24HOUR BOLD
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 2/2/2012 8:37:00 PM

I bought this mascara on the recommendation of my college age daughter. I have used these double sided mascaras in the past with good results so I felt the usual pull to try something new. On one side is a black mascara, or "primer" (probably the same mascara as the other end) with a smaller, thinner wand. On the other side is the top coat mascara, with a thicker, longer wand. The primer side does an amazing job of getting all the little hairs and into the tight corners without getting it all over your eyes. The top coat mascara with the bigger wand does a really good job of catching all those little lashes since the primer got them ready with a bit of product. It definitely lasted nearly 20 hours and was still looking great when I went to wash it off with a makeup remover cloth. No clumps, no racoon eyes and easy to remove with a remover wipe. I'm totally impressed and will definitely repurchase.

Eye Shadow -Sonia Kashuk - Instructional Eye on Neutral Palette
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/25/2012 8:17:00 PM

I bought this eye shadow solely based on the one MUA review currently available and I'm so glad I did! It's very difficult to find eyeshadow with no shimmer or shine, something older eyes don't need, and this shadow meets that criteria. There are lots of shades in this palette to play with and the color payoff is excellent. They are easily blendable and mixable, too. Price is a wee bit high, I paid $20 at Target, but imo it's worth it. The compact is nice and well made. Would definitely repurchase and highly recommend!

Hair Color -Unlisted Brand - Just for Men - Moustache and beard dye
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/23/2012 6:06:00 PM

I decided to try this product based soley on the MUA reviews and I'm so glad I did! Due to aging, my eyebrows have gotten very light and I spend quite a bit of time getting them darkened and filled in every morning. I colored them with Just For Men in medium brown and they are perfect. The next darker color would have been too dark and I would have looked like Groucho Marx. Didn't have to spend any time on my brows this morning. I thought the product was going to stain my skin but I got it off with some hair color remover that I got from Sally's but I think it's just alcohol. You only mix a little at a time so a box of color should last a long time, as you use very very little to just do your brows. The instructions were clear and easy to understand. Ladies, be careful putting it over your eyes, you don't want any drips! The only problem that I could see was it colored all the little stray hairs that I couldn't see before so I had more plucking to do. Highly recommend!

Blush -LORAC - Powder blush in PEACH
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/18/2012 11:14:00 AM

Lorac has the best blushes of any company! I have the colors Rose and Plum (I like Rose the best) but just bought the color Peach. Peach is a beautiful, soft, peachy, coral (sort of) color. No sparkle or shine, which is what I like the best about Lorac blushes. Stays on all day and the color stays true. Don't bother checking the online swatches, I haven't found a single one that matches the color in person. The one on amazon.com is waaaay off. I bought mine at Ulta, I think I paid $20 for it. One pot lasts me a little over a year, using it once a day, no touch ups. Love, love, love! Highly recommend, especially for the older ladies that don't want any shimmer or shine.

Fragrances -Lancome - Poeme
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/18/2012 8:12:00 AM

My 16 year old daughter and I were trying fragrances at Ulta and couldn't find anything we both liked. We must have smelled every perfume in that place but finally decided on Clinique Happy Heart, (I think that was what it was called). I went to the register and bought it but then, here comes my daughter with what she thinks is the holy grail of fragrances, Poeme by Lancome. She was flat out right, the stuff is heavenly. Very floral, kind of an old fashioned smell and very heavy, you only need one spray. We both loved it and wear it every day. Oh, I got right back in line, returned the Clinique and bought this one. The Ulta manager was very understanding.

Lips -Hard Candy - World Balmination in Starfish
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/14/2012 9:32:00 AM

I don't normally wear tinted lip balms but I bought this one, solely based on the cute tube. It has flowers all over it and it's really pretty. That said, I'm really pleased with the purchase since it's a really nice lip balm. The color is a pretty coral color, very very light. It is moisturizing but not all day, it will need to be reapplied. I actually layered it over a coral lipstick for a little extra wet look and it works great for that purpose. As another reviewer stated, the packaging ain't too swift. The stick doesn't retract all the way down in the tube which I think is a bonehead design. Other than that, it's a great product!

Lipstick -Unlisted Brand - Arissa - ALC 15 Tangy frost lipstick
rated 3 of 5
tuffers 1/14/2012 9:23:00 AM

This review is for Arissa ALC 15 "Tangy" frost lipstick. What a gorgeous, orangy-coral lipstick this is! I don't normal wear this shade of lipstick but picked it up on a whim after reading about MUA ladies loving a MAC coral. It's a soft, not too heavy/not too dark coral and I absolutely love it. Doesn't dry my lips out and stays on fairly well but will need to be reapplied after eating or drinking. I did layer a Hard Candy lip balm in "starfish" over it, just for a little extra moisture. This lipstick is dirt cheap at $2.64 a tube, bought at a local drugstore called Drug Emporium. The packaging is better than most high end lipsticks. I'm super impressed and will repurchase. EDIT: Kind of changed my mind a bit on this one, the color doesn't last long enough. It's so cheap that you can continually reapply but who wants to do that?

Misc Beauty Tools -Clarisonic - Mia
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/9/2012 8:08:00 AM

When I first saw the Clarisonic, I thought, "oh great, an expensive doo dad to help you escape from the drudgery of washing your face." A little background first, I bought the new Physicians Formula "concern: aging skin" cleanser and I didn't like it. It has no fragrance and no lather so even though it probably was a good cleanser, I didn't feel like it was cleaning my face very well. Then, I bought my teen daughter the clarisonic mia for Christmas. I found it in her room, several days later, still in the box, and as mothers are sometimes wont to do, I stole it. I needed a mild facial cleanser to use with it so I brought the Physicians Formula back out and I'm so glad I did! It works great with the Clarisonic! What a fun tool this little brush is. I thought it would spin but it doesn't, it vibrates. I go over my entire face and neck, after slathering on the cleanser. The only complaint I have is that when I'm scrubbing my nose, it vibrates my face and it feels a little weird. Feels great everywhere else, especially the forehead. You don't apply pressure, just skim the surface of your skin. You also need to use a very mild soap, no scrubs. I also think it would be great for a teen with acne on the face, arms or anywhere. It was very expensive but seems very well made and entirely submersable. It doesn't hold a charge for very long, only about 20 sessions or so, but it's easy to charge. My face is soft, smooth with no flakiness after cleansing with the clarisonic and using a good, thick moisturizer (my skin is very dry). I'm seriously thinking of giving this one back to my daughter and buying the full size one for myself. Highly recommend.

Powder -Palladio - Wet/Dry foundation
rated 5 of 5
tuffers 1/7/2012 6:06:00 PM

Ok, I really like this powder foundation as a setting powder, it doesn't provide enough coverage as a foundation on my 50 year old, aging skin. I use this over whatever liquid foundation I'm using at the time ( I like to experiment and switch around alot) but I never switch around my setting powder, I'm too happy with this one. Not only does it set my foundation, it adds an extra layer of coverage and makes my makeup stay on all day. The color I use is cypress beige and it's a perfect match for my light/medium skin tone. As another reviewer stated, if you use it dry, use a flat top kabuki style brush, the puff that it comes with is pretty useless. It doesn't dry out my already dry skin and it stays on for hours without a weird color change. The packaging is sturdy and looks like a department store product. Highly recommend!
