Liquid -Neutrogena - Mineral Sheers Liquid PF 20
innamorata 5/21/2010 4:27:00 AM
Okay, here's the deal. You don't have to use the brush if you don't like the brush. It's really just that simple. I agree, the brush is completely and totally useless...so what I did was grasp the brush with one hand and gently but firmly push at an angle. Don't pull straight up or you'll just be wasting your time...it's more like you're snapping a stick in half. If you do it right, the brush will just snap right off. Now, what you're left with is a plastic insert with a twisty thing in the middle. The twisty thing comes up as you twist, thereby forcing foundation up through the tube and out the brush...at least, that's what is supposed to happen in theory. In reality, the brush sucks and, more often than not, is defective (like mine was). But now, what you can do is pull out the tube and apply using your finger or a makeup wedge or even the brush if you're dead set on using it, as long as you are holding it in your hand and it is NOT attached to the tube.
I found that this foundation dries VERY quickly after you apply it to your face, so speed is key. Once it dries, it is dry and it is not going anywhere. Once I had it applied and powdered down, I loved the way it made my face look. I used Natural Ivory and the pinkish tone really suited my skin. (If you have yellowish undertones, try Classic Ivory.) My face looked almost airbrushed. The finish was smooth as silk and my face felt nice and soft, not greasy and icky.
But...after a few hours, this started to break down. It ended up caking very badly on my face and, for lack of a better description, it began to separate on my skin. Kinda like milk does when it goes bad. I used the Monistat chafing gel as a primer but that didn't help a bit. I used my NYC loose powder but that didn't help. I used Neutrogena's Healthy Skin powder but that didn't help either. My skin became greasy and slimy and this stuff broke down under pressure.
It's too bad, because I really wanted to like this. I tried everything to make it work, but nothing did. If it would stay looking like it did when I first applied, then I'd be thrilled and never stray. But I can't have cakey, separated makeup on my face. If they could make it stay looking like it does the first hour or so on my face, then I'd be sold.

Mascara -L'Oreal - Extra Volume Collagen Mascara (waterproof)
innamorata 1/2/2010 5:25:00 AM
I've never said this on here about a product, but I have to say...this stuff sucks royally.
First...it's clumpy. It should be called Extra Clumpy Mascara. I knew it would be bad when I took it out of the package and unscrewed the wand for the first time. Ugh...it looked like it had already been used, which it hadn't been, of course. No, it's Just. That. Bad.
Next...the brush. It's that horrid hourglass shape that seems to be so common among manufacturers who want to show that they are innovative or different than the rest. All it did was tick me off.
Finally...the application. I got more of this on my eyelids than I did on my lashes, and the product that I managed to get onto my lashes looked horrible. Now, I've been wearing makeup since I was thirteen years old (I'm forty now), so I think I know how to apply mascara. This stuff does NOT stay on your lashes, but mysteriously appears on your skin no matter how hard you try to keep it off. It didn't thicken or lengthen or magnify or volumize or do anything but sit on my lashes like a lumpy mess of black yuck. Seriously, it's like applying axle grease with a branch from a cheap artificial Christmas tree.
Don't even ask me about the wear. I didn't keep it on my eyes long enough to find out. I took it back to the store and got my money back. Do NOT waste your money on this trash...you'd be better off coloring in your lashes with a Sharpie marker.

Blush -New York Color - Color Wheel Mosaic Powder Pink Cheek Glow
innamorata 11/23/2009 2:51:00 AM
This is one of the most versatile powders I've ever used. It has various shades of pink and brown in a mosaic pattern, ranging from a neutral brown to light pink to medium pink. It has a slight shimmer but nothing that looks like a Las Vegas showgirl. I've used it for everything from an eyeshadow to blusher to even a highlighter on the decolletage area. You can swipe a large fluffy brush across it for a blusher, or you can use a smaller eyeshadow brush and pick up individual colors for subtle accenting of the eye area. When I am having a "no-makeup" day, I will use a fluffy brush drawn across all the colors to put just a swipe of color onto my eyes, add a bit of eyeliner and mascara, and I'm set. I have very oily skin and eyelids, but I've never noticed any fading or streaking.
The only real gripes I have are the usual...the lid isn't exactly super-tight, but I don't mind it too much because I use a small makeup case and there's not a lot of room for makeup to bounce around in there and uncap itself. The other is that I broke it...I dropped it on the floor of the bathroom and that was the end of that. But I just turned it upside down and let the broken pieces collect in the plastic lid and use it that way...I just don't take it with me anywhere. Once I use up what I have I'll definitely be buying more. At less than five bucks, it's a fairly cheap splurge for your makeup fix.

Gels/Soaps -Suave - Naturals Body Wash in Cocoa Butter
innamorata 11/9/2009 4:56:00 PM
Wow, this stuff rox my sox. First, this smells awesome. Not overwhelmingly cocoa buttery, but enough that you have a pleasant aromatherapy experience in the shower. I find it fades off once I get out, so it doesn't interfere with my perfume. Next, it lathers up nicely...not foamy, not slippery or goopy (like I've noticed some of the clearer Suave body washes can do...it's like washing with Jell-O), but a soft, luxurious, creamy lather that smells ooooooooooh so good and feels wow nice. I've caught myself continuing to scrub after I know I'm already clean, just because I like it that much. It's made me late more than once! And I can feel it on my skin after I get out...not a heavy, oily feel, but just a moisturized feel to my skin that I like. And last, it's uber cheap. Less than two bucks at Wally World and you've got yourself a wonderful body wash. I've been on a cocoa butter kick lately and the only way I could like this better is if they gave it away for free...but for less than two dollars (one dollar if you can find it at your local all-for-a-buck store), they may as well be. Run out and get you some, but don't take it all...there are other people who want this too, you know. I used to use the Cocoa and Shea Butter Body Wash, but this is close and I like the color better. In fact, it might work even better than the old version. This is pretty much the only body cleanser or soap that I use in the shower. Who needs Dove, at almost eight dollars a bottle and which doesn't smell as nice, when you can have this?

Fragrances -Coty - Ici
innamorata 9/14/2009 2:13:00 AM
Would I buy this again? Absolutely. This has become my signature fragrance. I've gone through three bottles of it already. I love it, my husband adores it, even my kids think I smell nice when I wear this.
I can see where some might think it has a "foody" smell, considering the mid-notes feature caramel, creme brulee, and cocoa, but it is sooooooooo much more than a foody scent. It has lovely, sparkly floral notes to open it, living magnolia, rain forest orchids, muguet, mimosa, peony, orris and hyacinth; then come the deliciously smooth and buttery-creamy mid-notes that I mentioned earlier; and it gradually ends with basenotes of amber, musk and exotic woods. So smooth, so yummy, so gorgeous, so different than anything else I've tried. I love how this starts out as a lovely floral and gradually morphs itself into something sensual and deep and darned sexy. This is such a multi-layered fragrance that the opening and basenotes are almost like wearing two different perfumes, yet they compliment each other beautifully. I'd put this up against any expensive department store brand.
This goes over extremely well on a date. In fact, this perfume reminds me of a date...flirty and fun and lovely at the beginning, deliciously and promisingly tempting in the middle, and smoky-eyed sensual sex-on-a-stick wish-fulfillment at the end. If you haven't given this a try, you don't know what you're missing. But warning...do NOT wear this if you are not woman enough to live up to all it promises.
Oh...by the way, it's places like this that rumors get started. I wrote Coty begging for the reinstatement of this supposedly "discontinued" fragrance, and they told me it has most definitely NOT been discontinued. So, let's go through that again, slowly so you can catch it...ici has NOT been discontinued. Now, go buy some! (just not MY bottles!)

Concealers -Almay - Bright Eyes Eye Base + Concealer
innamorata 5/9/2009 2:01:00 AM
People, people, people. No need for all this hubbub. All this anger about the useless little brush, when all you have to do is do as I did...the second I took it out of the package, I grabbed hold of those silly little bristles and yanked the thing right off the tube. No problems. Now, it is extremely easy to take one's finger and get a bit of product off the plastic end of the brush. Alternately, you can squeeze a little bit of product up in the tube and, again, onto one's finger. Simply replace the dorky brush when finished. Lather, rinse, repeat as needed.
So now that we've gotten THAT out of the way...
I was needing a new eyeshadow primer, since I'd used up all my L'Oreal Decrease. I had noticed this in the store, and read reviews here (that's how I knew about the useless brush...but then, most "flow through" brushes ARE useless), but thought the price a bit steep (similar to Decrease...around seven to eight dollars). However, one day in Target, I noticed that the Almay was on sale, so I ended up paying about five bucks for this. Not bad, I thought.
I have the lightest shade, Light. It matches my skin okay...not exactly, but since the purpose is to wear it UNDER makeup or eyeshadow, I wasn't worried about an exact match. Like I said above, I daub it on with my finger, both on my eyelid and under my eye in the "dark circle" area. It goes on easily enough, spreads smoothly, and doesn't ball up or get sticky.
And that is where the compliments will end. First, this does NOTHING to either decrease the puffiness under my eyes nor to cover up the dark circles under there. Yes, my dark circles are legendary, but I have managed to cover them before, so I know it can be done...just not with this. As far as a primer for eyeshadow goes...within an hour my shadows creased. All of them, cheap and not-so-cheap. I tried powdering it down with cornstarch before eyeshadow application, and that didn't work. Powdered the top of the shadow too, and that didn't work either. I have very oily lids, but I am not stupid, and all of the preventative measures that have always worked before do not work with this stuff. I think it must be because it is kind of oily on its own. Oily product on oily lids...not a good combination.
Last, it is developing a crack in the seam along the side where you squeeze it. I do NOT squeeze this hard...no reason to, it is practically full. Cheap product, cheap container, cheap brush, cheap performance. I bought some Decrease today, which is what I should have done to start with, and this is going straight to the trash. I bought this at a Target an hour from my house, so it isn't even worth the gas to take it back and get my five bucks. I really wish there was a zero rating, because that is what this deserves...zero.

Skincare - Body -Unlisted Brand - Nadinola Cocoa Butter Cream
innamorata 12/16/2008 4:08:00 AM
Let me just say that I am a cocoa butter fanatic. I've used just about any product I can find with cocoa butter in it because I love both the scent that it gives off and the way it moisturizes my skin like no other product I've tried. I've used the two "holy grails" of cocoa butter creams, Queen Helene and Palmer's, and while they do have their place I have to say this little jar of Nadinola Cocoa Butter Cream wins hands down.
While I have seriously oily skin on my face, from my jawline down my skin is bone dry. In the summer, I mostly used the Queen Helene cream on my skin that was too dry from the tanning bed, and it seemed to work okay, but I've suffered through many a winter here in the Midwest with seriously dry skin and I needed more performance than either Queen Helene or Palmer's was giving me. They were good, but not good enough to tackle MY dryness...I needed the big guns, something that wasn't going to screw around. I saw this for a dollar, thought the ingredients were nice, and decided to give it a try.
All I can say is WOW. First of all, this smoothed the alligator skin on my legs right out. I had big patches of dry skin on my legs, thighs, and butt, and this made them smooth and soft. On my shins, I have giant flakes coming off and my skin bleeds so badly there that it actually stains my jeans, but this product eased the pain and soothed my skin to where it isn't bleeding any more. I used probably a bit more than average so I had to rub and rub to work it in, but that's okay...my skin was thirsty! I have a couple of patches of very itchy, red, irritated skin on my side and chest, and this settled those spots right down. The scaly ick on my elbows is gone. I put this on my feet at night after a pedicure, wear socks to bed, and my feet are still nice when I get up. And the best part...I do NOT have to wash my hands after using this to get rid of that overly greasy feeling, because this works right into my hands and makes them nice and smooth. I HATE greasy lotiony hands. The texture of this is not super heavy, but it still packs a punch.
The ingredients in this are what initially sold me in the store. Most cocoa butter creams I've seen have cocoa butter as the fourth or fifth ingredient on the list, or sometimes even farther down, with some fragrance thrown in to make you feel like you're getting more cocoa butter than you actually are. Not with Nadinola...it is the second ingredient. I think this is what gives it that nice chocolatey smell...it isn't overpowering but it is there. I like it. Also, the seventh ingredient is coconut oil, also known for its moisturizing qualities. Yes, it has petroleum and mineral oil, but srsly. People have been using these things for millenia. Don't get so worked up about it.
All in all, this is fast becoming my favorite skin cream. It is doing wonders for my seriously wounded, dry, itchy, bleeding, flaking, painful skin. Oh, for those of you who are having a hard time finding it, I found mine at Family Dollar for one buck. You might try places like there or Dollar General. And, of course, walgreens.com has it for $.99, but you're going to pay over five bucks for shipping.
UPDATE 3/24/09: I have found out that I have contact dermatitis, and on places where I am broke out from it I wear this cream between the times I apply my prescription foam. I also wear it when my skin is not bad enough for the prescription but is still itchy, and it works great. If I need a cream that protects, I use Suave Oatmeal, but for everyday itchies and dry skin this stuff is da bomb.

Wow, this stuff rox my sox.
I have been using Ivory body wash for a while, and I like it, but I ran out one day in the shower and had to use this, my daughter's body wash. LIKE WOAH. As soon as I was decent, I ran to Wal-Mart and picked up my own bottle, because if I used up all my daughter's she'd kill me. ;)
First, this smells awesome. Not overwhelmingly cocoa buttery, but enough that you have a pleasant aromatherapy experience in the shower. I find it fades off once I get out, so it doesn't interfere with my perfume.

Treatments -Burt's Bees - Baby Bee Diaper Ointment
innamorata 7/12/2008 3:45:00 PM
Yes, I would buy this product again, and have, even though my children are teenagers.
Why? For one thing, if you've ever had a man around the house, and said man works a hard, physical job or plays sports on a regular basis, you know that men develop rashes in a, uh, rather sensitive area. Most of the time this is due to heavy perspiration mixed with clothing rubbing on the wet skin. It's called "galding" and it's a horrible thing, very painful. This is the only cream I've found that not only protects the skin against further irritation and dries up any weeping and moisture, but heals the inflamed area while it protects it.
And if you've ever experienced a little of this yourself, ladies, due to heavy sweating and your clothes rubbing (such as pantyhose or spandex or underwear), you know the pain the guys go through. I've used this myself on red, irritated skin in sensitive areas and it really helps. I usually apply heavily, then sprinkle on some Gold Bond powder. I advise the guys to do so as well, and they say it does help. Regular diaper rash cream just doesn't work the same...I can assume it's the essential oils in this that makes the difference. It also doesn't sweat off or wash off, which makes it nice for situations which call for protection. I can wear it all day outside in the hot sun and it doesn't rub off.
I've even used it on blisters on my feet, because it doesn't rub off or sweat off. It also helps heal the skin underneath. I think this would be good on any skin that is irritated or inflamed in some way (barring a serious burn, of course).
My husband has said that some of the guys at work look at him askance in the locker room when he applies diaper cream...but they don't laugh once they've been galded and ask what that stuff was he used that worked so well. :)

Fragrances -Alyssa Ashley - CocoVanilla

Sex on the beach!
It took me forever to find this little gem, but once I did I realized it was worth the hunt. I finally located it at a CVS Pharmacy, and I ended up buying it on sale for about seven dollars US (normally it runs around twenty bucks in the store, although you can find it cheaper online).
The box it comes in is a yellowish color with stripes, which I believe is meant to remind one of sand and the beach. The bottle itself is a frosted yellow with a gold cap, and it is rather large and rectangular, with the cap being almost half the height of the bottle itself.
The scent is lovely and, while it does have layers, it is not too complicated...basically, the title says it all. Coconut and vanilla. However, it isn't as simplistic as that. You can detect a faint floral note (which the website describes as tiare flowers, which is a type of gardenia) and a subtle hint of something which reminds me of sun and sand, although I can't put my finger on it.
Normally, I'm not one for "foody" fragrances, leaving that to children and immature noses, but this one is complex enough to lift it up out of the one-note teenagey body sprays and into a more mature, adult category. It starts out like a sunrise over the beach; the mid notes are like a bright, hot noon on the sand; the drydown is definitely darker and smoky, like a summer sunset over the ocean. The end notes are definitely sex on the beach and absolutely worth waiting for.
It doesn't last forever but I can get six to eight hours out of it. This really is a very sexy fragrance if worn with the right attitude and I receive many compliments when I wear it.
Now, the one drawback to the bottle I have...I own the alcohol-free version (there are three sprays, an EDT, an EP, and a body spray). Being alcohol-free, the spray is not a light spray that is easily absorbed into the skin. It's a bit heavier and it tends to sit on the skin. In other words, you can't just spritz this on and walk off...you have to rub it in a bit. I usually rub my wrists together, and I either take my fingers and rub the spray in my skin anywhere else I have sprayed, or I take a big body brush and work it in. And I try not to wear this two days in a row...I've found that if I do, it tends to break out my chest area. I just have to be careful to rub it in (so it doesn't get on my clothes) and scrub well the next day in the shower.
You can usually find this on eBay and in certain stores if you get lucky. You can also order direct off the site. I'd like to see them come out with a CocoVanilla Musk or a CocoVanilla Night or CocoVanilla Sunset, for evening wear. All in all, very sexy and wearable, and not as simplistic as it sounds.

Lip Gloss -E.L.F. - Luscious Liquid Lipstick in Maple Sugar
innamorata 5/26/2008 4:05:00 AM
A definite HG lip product. I never expected a lip gloss that only cost a dollar to be so wonderful, but by golly...here it is! A beautiful taupey mauvey color that looks not quite MLBB, but it definitely is a color that enhances and livens my natural lip color. I don't need a mirror to apply it and while it does wear off kind of fast, it's no problem to reapply.
It comes in a plastic tube with a fuzzy tip through which the product flows, through several little holes. It's much like the Revlon gloss of the same type. It takes several clicks of the tube to get the product flowing, but just keep trying, it eventually comes out. About the only thing I don't like is when I carry this around in my pocket, the product seeps out of the little holes and I have to apply with my finger instead of the applicator.
I've already gone through one tube and am working on the last bits of my second. I keep one in my purse at all times in case I don't like the lip color I have on when I leave the house or in case I forget to put on some lip color...for a buck, I can afford to have one in all my little hiding places. It smells nice and tastes fine, kind of a minty sort of smell. I'd like it better if it smelled sugary like many of the other lip products ELF produces, but I can live with it. :)

Gels/Soaps -Unlisted Brand - Ivory Moisturizing Body Wash
innamorata 5/18/2008 12:53:00 AM
Love, love, love this stuff. I'm so happy that Ivory now makes its lovely soap in a handy body wash. For a while, they were selling large bottles of it at Wal-Mart for around four bucks, but then they started selling them in slightly smaller bottles for $1.97. Whut? So buying one!
I noticed there are three scents available at my store...Simply Ivory, Simply Ivory Aloe, Simply Ivory Lavender...I have the original scent. One sniff takes me back to childhood and that beautiful floating bar of Ivory soap. I used to buy the same bar when I was first married and too poor to buy anything else.
It says what it does and it does what it says. It lathers (but not overly lathery), it moisturizes (but not oily-like), it smells nice and soapy clean (but not perfumey), and it cleans my body. What more could I ask for? I also found out that I can mix in a little bit of scented body wash (to match whatever perfume I will wear) and it gives off a little bit of the scent, but it doesn't become overpowering (like perfumed body wash can sometimes do). I don't think I'll go back to Dove again, as long as I can get this for under two bucks.

Gels/Soaps -Dove - Cream Oil Shower

I love this body wash. I was having problems with extremely dry skin over the winter, and this body wash (well, the whole line, in its different scents) seriously helped keep my skin soft, smooth, and hydrated. I could feel it hours after I got out of the shower, but not in a bad greasy skin kind of way...rather, in a soft skin kind of way. It was so nice and smooth going on, and even with showering every day a bottle would last me three weeks to a month.
The problem is the price. For a long time, a bottle was $4.97 at Wal-Mart. However, now the price has gone up to almost $7 a bottle. Sorry, Dove, but I don't care how good this is, I'm not paying that price just for the product to literally go down the drain. If it ever comes back down again, I might repurchase...but I'd have to think about it, since I hate to find something I like only to have to stop using it for some reason.

Liquid -Physicians Formula - CoverToxTen50 Wrinkle Therapy Foundation
innamorata 4/16/2008 11:02:00 PM
Quite possibly the most sucktacular foundation I've ever tried.
First of all, the price. I paid thirteen dollars for this crap and you better believe I took it back to the store and got my money back.
Second, the attached brush. Since I'd done my MUA homework, I knew that the brush was pretty much useless, so once I got home I immediately unscrewed the brush from the base (really not hard at all, you just twist it a few times while pulling) and put it in the cabinet. The makeup itself flows out of a few holes with a plug in the center, so it's easy to just dab some on a makeup wedge and apply.
Last, the wear. The color I chose, Classic Ivory, was the lightest and was an okay match. It didn't give my face much color or brightness...it's pretty much a neutral ivory color, not warm nor cool (I have oily, PPP, very cool-toned skin with no yellow tones whatsoever). I applied some one evening at home over clean skin and the few hours that I had it on, it wore okay. No nasties or shinies or whatever (I wore Corn Silk loose powder on top to set it). I didn't really notice a great deal of wrinkle reduction, but then I've been blessed with a "young" look so I don't have a lot of wrinkles to start with. People always think I'm younger than I am (I am 38), but I've started to notice little lines at the corners of my eyes and on my forehead that I'd just like to cover or camouflage if at all possible. While this did cover nicely, I didn't notice any huge, remarkable difference. The texture of my skin really didn't change.
The next day, I applied around noon and went about my day. I would like to point out that I did not apply a ton of this...in fact, I was pretty conservative in my application, considering I was using a makeup wedge and could therefore more accurately control how much product I was using than if I was using the brush. I again used the Corn Silk powder to set it. After a few hours, I noticed the foundation was starting to break down around my nose, and I was getting the dreaded "spotty nose syndrome". You know, where the foundation wears off on the skin of your nose but stays in the pores, leaving a spotty look. I looked in the mirror while outside, and even with a very conservative application this looked cakey after a few hours. By the end of the day, my face was an oily mess, with the foundation breaking down and looking splotchy and goopy.
But the best was yet to come. That night, I noticed a weird red, bumpy rash along the right side of my jawline, extending down onto my neck area under my chin. The next morning, the red bumps were still there, but they were joined by their friends the pimples, which had appeared all over my chin and cheeks. That sealed it...I was going to try it with a primer underneath, or trying it with the matching pressed powder, but if it's going to give me zits and a rash then forget it. I work too hard to keep my skin clear to have some stupid, nasty foundation ruin it.
Oh yeah, and about SPF? Putting SPF in makeup is just to fool consumers into buying a product. You can't put on makeup with SPF and expect it to protect you all day. In fact, you can't put on SPF lotion/cream alone once a day and expect it to protect you all day. You have to reapply during the day for continuous protection. So unless you're prepared to take off all your foundation at least once a day, possibly more, and reapply, then SPF is pretty much useless in makeup. Carry an umbrella or wear a hat.
If it works for you, great, but it didn't work at all for me. I would say, if this is a foundation that works for you, just take off the stupid brush (why does PF resort to such gimmicks, anyway?) and use a makeup wedge. Once you've applied, stick the square fat part of the makeup wedge over the hole and screw the lid back on, with the skinny flat part scrunched up in the lid. This keeps the foundation from leaking all over the place.
