Part of me thinks I'm crazy for giving this such a low rating. I mean -- tobacco, oakmoss, vanilla, coconut...what's not to love? Plus the cool packaging and the fact that it's my birthstone....but, no, I just can't push it up any higher. While I love the idea of the notes in Onyx, and indeed, while I adore my Onyx candle to death and lust after the shower gel, I simply CANNOT wear the oil. It sits too dark, too artificial and too heavy on my skin. I can't pinpoint what specifically is wrong with this fragrance -- all I know is that it just doesn't make me feel sexy; it instead makes me feel distinctly uncomfortable and unclean. Very weird. I love Sage's line, and have five other oils by her, but this is one I just can't bring myself to add to the collection.
UPDATE: Lovers of this fragrance MUST try Yosh's Ginger Ciao oil. It's everything I wanted Onyx to be. Heck, it's everything *Onyx* wants itself to be -- the starlet that the teenage Onyx has pin-up posters of on her wall, gazes dreamily at, and imagines being when she grows up!

This is almost identical to DSH - Hippie Chic, perhaps even identical to some noses!
Even though the description makes it sound sweet, I definitely don't class it as such at all. I actually regard this as a unisex scent. This is a sultry, beachy/tropical scent and smells to me like bourbon vanilla and and toasted coconut with a tiny splash of burnt sugar. I wish it had a touch more sweetness to it to balnce it out and make it more feminine, for this reason I deducted one lippie.
Nice but WAY overpriced for such a miniscule 1/8oz bottle and that's why I deducted another lippie. Sadly I wouldn't re-purchase even thought I quite like it!

Decription: "Onyx: (Birthstone for August) A fragrance that is as darkly opulent as the stone for which it was named, onyx begins with a bewitching top note accord of black coconut, tobacco and oakmoss. Its rich and enveloping base note accord of vanilla, amber and sheer musks caresses the skin like a sweet dew born of nocturnal, tropical air. A perfume of almost primeval intensity, Onyx evokes nature's beauty in its darkest forms; a jungle's depths, volcanic heat and velvety night skies."Onyx is one of the best-executed oils in the Sage collection, although Pearl is by far and above my favorite. I like Onyx for it's sensual spicy demeanor, with tobacco, coconut, oakmoss, vanilla nectar- a great combination of notes that make for a really great dark coconut fragrance that is both sweet and bitter in a way. A great scent that is long lasting and different than many scents out there. The packaging is stunning, of course. EDIT: This fragrance reminds me of The Pirates of the Carribean movies, with the dark but tropical vibe. The black coconut and tobacco and vanilla and oakmoss combine to a sultry effect. It is a bit narcotic and entrancing in a way. The only problem I have with the scent is that at times it has too much of a peppery tinge, while at others I smell pickles or something green that turns me off-- maybe the oakmoss. But soon enough, it smells great again and I forget about those offenders. A mysterious scent that changes throughout its wear on the skin.Onyx contains no water, chemicals, or alcohol- just pure perfume essence oils.NOTES: Black Coconut, Tobacco, Oakmoss, Vanilla, Amber, and Sheer Musks.

I'm really on the fence wirh this one. On one hand, IMHO, Onyx is the sole stand out of the Sage Machado line. Its dark coconut/tobacco/oakmoss thing is a headturner, and is undeniably sexy. I really enjoy this fragrance, however, it is missing a certain "something" that would compel me to acquire it. I think this might be great layered with either more vanilla or with a white flowers type scent. Unfortunately, it galls me to pay $45 for 1/8 oz of a scent that needs to be layered to reach its ultimate potential.

This is one of my favorite vanilla scents. The addition of coconut makes it so beachy and sexy. I wear it with other fragrances and get lots of compliments.

Ok, I'm in fragrance heaven...just have to be....this delightful coconutty/vanilly concoction is just perfect--absolutely pure and authentic. There is nothing plastick-y or artificial about this baby...and the packaging is so adorable--this is just too much! Love it, love it, love it!
(Did I say I love it?)

I dont know what all the hype is about here. Why all the rave reviews ?? It does smell interesting in a toasted coconut meets sweet pipe tabacco kind of way..but thats about it. Its a bit of an odd combo I think. The coconut in it is nice though. But still I wouldnt want to walk around smelling like this.

This is a nice, warm fragrance. Initially it smells like coconut, then as it dries it turns more to vanilla and spicy musk with a hint of tobacco. DH loved this--great for evening. Sweet and comforting.

I thought this was going to smell tropical, what with the coconut and all, but, instead, it's simply a warm, vanilla-type scent. It actually reminds me abit of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Bois du Chocolate and Fleurs du Chocolate, but, where I can't stand either of those due to the sickly sweet/sour musk base she tends to use in all her blends, Sage doesn't have that problem and therefore I can wear and enjoy it. Expensive and not exactly original and yet, I can't stop myself from wanting desperately to go buy a roll-on bottle as soon as possible.

Okay. Get yourself a dollop of rich double thick cream, stir in a heaped spoonful of shredded coconut, add a few pinches of very fine pipe tobacco and mix well. Let stand for a while... Now, inhale deeply, and you just about have Onyx! Lavishly sweet and creamy, but given a dark and earthy edge by the tobacco and oakmoss. It becomes gorgeously musky an hour or two later, and on the final drydown, still musky, but ever so slightly powdery. Onyx is certainly distinctive, but when I wear it, I’m reminded just a little of two other fragrances I love: La Perla Eclix and Pilar & Lucy The Exact Friction of Stars. All three have very different and complex personalities, but they’re related somehow, like distant cousins. Just as they begin to dry down, Eclix has a chocolately thing going on and EFoS has a chocolate/coconut/tobacco thing (though Onyx is deeper and richer in this department). But that’s where they’re alike, because for a while Onyx emulates chocolate in a similar way to its cousins…but darker chocolate. No matter how I look at it though, Onyx is another beautifully blended oil from Sage…and it's delicious!

Onyx is absolutely my favorite skin scent ever! (so far that is) It seems to meld into your skin and become one with you. The quality if fabulous, being 100% oil, lasting all day! I love it so much I purchased the shower gel and body lotion to go with it. I'm in love. Oh! Class act packaging too.

I love the combination of vanilla, dark coconut and tobacco. It reminds me of the beach. This is my 2nd favorite Sage fragrance, it is very unique and lovely.

Delicious vanilla nectar with just a hint of coconut. I didn't detect any notes of chocolate here. The tobacco notes are very faint which was a bit disappointing to me. I can smell a hint of musk in the drydown that somehow makes me feel nostalgic. A very luscious scent that I will probably buy again. The packaging is quite adorable.

Wow! I didn't expect to like this as I hate coconut but this is divine. I initially get a strong tobacco note but it mellows. On dry down this becomes a lovely warm scent with a hint of naughtiness.

Intoxicating!! This is beautifully blended, and there are no artifical smells at all. Onyx oil is now one of my new favourite fragrances. The first thing I smell is the coconut, then some vanilla, and I can't describe what else is in it , but definately coconutty/vanilla type of fragrance. This is a very warm, sexy, sensual fragrance. The packaging is very cute and unique, and I love the little glass roller bottle, it is just the right size. This is priced well, not to expensive, and a little goes a long way. I am just LOVING this, heaven in a bottle!!

What a HUGE disappointment this was. I was hoping this scent would be on the darker, tobacco side but instead it is SICKENINGLY sweet. It is not smokey at all. All I smell is coconut and vanilla. I am not sensitive to smells in any way, but this stuff literally made me want to throw up. I hate this. I am so annoyed!!

When i first reccieved this in the sample, I wans't in love. the odd mix of tobacco and vanilla was a bit unusual. i wore it one day and it melded beautifully with my own body chemistry. i love this mixed with topaz, which is my favorite but not on its
