Gorgeous red, and this coming from a girl who usually leans towards nude glosses. But that's exactly the point for me -- it is SO clearly different from what I normally wear that it caused coworkers to sort of look at me in shock (never a bad thing, in my book, unless I have a snot-wad dangling outta my nose).
And therein lies its beauty -- it makes people take notice. Love it.

Add me to the list of Russian Red-lovers. I am very pleased with my purchase. As so many people have said below, it is a true red, with a blue base and a matte finish. It looks great either by itself or with a clear gloss on top. I use Lipcote to give a long-lasting finish if I'm wearing it by itself, because reapplying such a pigmented colour can be tricky. I like how it looks when I just apply it straight from the tube and rub my lips together, but it's very easy to get it wrong and not easy to fix without makeup remover (or at least a tissue).
I'm quite happy to wear this in the daytime, but it may be too much for some - and it's almost certainly too much for my business-casual workplace, where few women wear any kind of lipstick at all. But at nighttime, it comes into its own. Between Russian Red and my other favourite red lippie, Clinique's Vintage Red, I can always pull together a glamourous look in a matter of minutes.

Love this red! Perfect shade for me, very intense, not as moisturising as other intense shades (such as Girl about town) but not drying whatsoever, with very good staying power. Very good for when you are going for a retro look as well. I went all the way for a night out to a show, with black mascara and eye liner and it still was not too "in your face". Elegant shade.

Wow, this is gorgeous - the perfect true red. Lovely formula that glides on and stays on! Smells very nice too. Only negative is that it can be a bit drying.

I liked Russian Red, but it clashed with my skin tone. If you can't normally wear red lipstick, GLAM might be the answer for you. It is only available at MAC stores. I liked Russian Red 2nd best out of all the MAC red lipsticks I tried & think it would look great on many people. It is a blue red but it appeared orange red on me.

This is such a beautiful perfect red. I feel so sophisticated when I wear this color. Sexy for night, classy for day. The staying power is pretty good. The formula is a bit drying but that's okay. I will repurchase and am in love with this wonderful red.

I LOVE THIS LIPSTICK!
I have extremely fair, cool toned skin, dark hair and blue eyes. I had been searching for the perfect blue red for a long time, ever since I lost an old revlon lipstick that was the perfect blue red color. This is a very vibrant blue red, the MA who suggested it for me put clear lipglass over it, and that really gives it that extra...oomph. Very good nightime lips. Doesnt turn to fuschia on me like a lot of lipsticks do. I will repurchase if I ever manage to run out. Lipliner is essential with this color. I use China Red by sonia kashuk.

I got this about an hour ago, and am just now trying it on for the first time, but I give it a tentative 5.
I must admit, though, that upon seeing RR in the tube, my first reaction was "Oh, no; this is identical to 'Tassle'!" I don't need two of the exact same red.
BUT when I applied RR it looked quite different from Tassle, brighter and less burgundy, more red. I would say that "Tassle" is a fall/winter red, and RR is a summer red. RR is, as others have described, a perfect glamor-girl deep red. It is a matte, but doesn't feel especially dry to me. Oddly enough, it looks brighter and more true red on me after it's been blotted fairly heavily. And the person who advised using a lipbrush with this one is right! If you miss your natural lipline by a micrometer with this one, everybody is going to know it!
But for a red like this, a little extra care is worth it. Would repurchase.
UPDATE: I've had this one for about 3 months now, and though I still like it, I'm lowering its rating by one lippie, because "Powerhouse" looks more true red on me. Therefore, I find myself reaching for "Russian Red" very seldom. RR is still a gorgeous fall red; brighter and less maroon than "Rocker," another terrific fall red.
Though "Russian Red" is not my HG red(that honor belongs to "Powerhouse"), it's gorgeous, and well worth having in my "arsenal."
MAC artists, for some reason, push "Russian Red" very hard, but I've never been able to like it as much as so many others do. Thank God for "Ruby Woo," of which I bought two tubes. "Ruby" is also a deep red, but on me it looks less maroon and more red than RR. I think everyone should give RR a try, though; so many absolutely love it, and I'm picky.

If you're looking for a straight bright red, this is definitely holy grail material. The texture is to die for. It's more on the warmer orange-y side rather than blue tinged. Not as dark as it might seem in pictures. Definitely not a gothic color. One of the best things about the amplified formula is that it stains the lip when it rubs off so you can eat and drink all you want and still have a nice even tint all day. Fantastic!

The PERFECT red lipstick! A classic! I am so so happy I've found this (thanks to all the + reviews!) (:
*Update*
I've found that unless reapplied within a couple of hours the lipstick seeps into the lines in my lips and really emphasizes flakes and dryness. Nevertheless, the great color is still worth it.

UPDATE:2006 OCT. I raised one lippie. I lightly brused pressed powder on my lips, directly apply Russian Red, rubb my lips, tissue off, use a lip brush and layer many many times, use tissue and press. Apply again, rubb lips, apply again.
The color stayed all day without any touch ups.

The best red lipstick EVER! A bold intensly pigmented blue red. It has a matte finish, which can make it slightly drying, but a little MAC gloss over it does the trick. I wear it over cherry lip pencil, which matches Russian Red perfectly. If you are looking for a bold red, then this is your color. I would absolutely buy again and again!

I finally found a true red that looks good on my cool tone skin (C3/4). Not too orange or too pink, or too brown - a true, blue red. First of all, this MUST be applied with a lip brush or a finger. I tried applying it from the tube and it is way too pigmented to even attempt. One millimeter outside the line, and you need your m/u remover to touch-up. The staying power is very impressive! Even after removing it, my lips were still stained red! It leaves a completely matte finish. Russian Red reminds me of the red lipstick my grandmothers used to wear in the 40's. How they applied it from the tube, I will never know, but it has a real retro feel to it. I also like to apply it with my finger for a lightly stained look...like I just ate a pint of ripe strawberries. I usually just apply the tiniest bit to the center of the lip, and then pat on with my finger. Now, Russian Red gives a completely modern look. It looks sexy, and the staying power is amazing!

I found RR to be a bright orange-red lipstick that looked garish on me. Nice consistency, decent price, just unflattering on me.
