I have used Preference the last two times I've dyed my naturally medium golden brown hair, using #5 1/2 Medium Amber Copper Brown. The first time I used it I got my friend to add 10 foils of lighter reddish brown highlights (nice 'n easy #111 natural medium auburn) on the top and sides of my hair, and the color turned out great. I was called a redhead repeatedly which was my goal- lots of red in it though I didn't actually use a base color that claimed on the box to be "red". It looked very natural too, and the Preference base color was shiny and my hair felt healthy afterwards. The conditioner is FABULOUS and even before I put it in, while I was washing the dye out of my hair, my hair was not that mushy mass of tangles that feels rough and damaged that you get so often with hairdye. The color held quite true for about three weeks, with minimal fading, then faded more but still the color looked good and shiny even though most of the red had faded. It still had nice warm amber highlights toning it throughout.
This time when I dyed it, it was a lot darker than last time, it seems, even discounting the fact that there are no highlights. It's definitely darker than the color it shows on the box. I think I should have left it on only 15 minutes and not the recommended 25. It is too dark and barely reddish- like coffee looks when it is held up to the light. Because I have dark blond eyebrows from my blond mother, I look weird with the hair that is one to two steps darker than my natural color, and I am disappointed with it. I am going to fix it with lighter red soon.

I've used Preference for about ten years and love it so much. I occasionally switch for the sake of experimentation(recently i used Feria - great color, nasty drying and color didn't last long) and am now back with Preference. I only dye one shade lighter than my natural dark goldy-blonde color (I use Champagne Blonde) and it always looks so natural and shiny afterwards. The conditioner that comes with it is awesome and as someone said previously, I wish they sold that separately too! Out of all the dyes I've used this brand is absolutely my favorite. Worth the couple of dollars more than the other drugstore brands by far.

I just used the Medium Ash Blonde 7 1/2 last night and am shocked by how good this home coloring is. The night before I had tried their new L'Oreal Experte product in a warm shade with highlighting and thought it too brassy. Called the L'Oreal hotline and the woman recommended this Medium Ash Blonde. It worked beautifully. It has been a long time since I've used at home color. I usually spend a lot of money at the salon, and I am very impressed with this Preference to say the least. BUT, home color is VERY risky and never seems to be as good as what a decent colorist at a salon can do.

Preference is really great. I have only used the darker shades, so I can't say anything about their lightening formulas, but in my experience Preference has always left my fine hair in good condition afterward. For the Noir Fatale colors (Deepest Cherry, etc.) it looks best if you keep them on for at least fifteen minutes longer than the box says. The color will stay a lot longer.
I really like the conditioner that comes with this. I wish they sold it separately!

This is one of the best at home hair coloring that I've used. My hair came out exactly as the color on the box showed. It is so very silky and soft and just feels great. I love the conditioner that comes with it. It doesn't weigh my hair down but leaves it soft and full of body, not to mention the added shine. I especially like how they give enough conditioner to use for 6 weeks (use weekly). I will definitely repurchase.

I have been coloring my hair since 1963. I have always purchased Clairol products: the Frost n' Tip
kit, Miss Clairol, and their line of toners mixed with 20% peroxide, and one or two crushed Wella Bleach tablets for a faster lift.In the last few years, I used Revitalique (blistered my scalp), Ultress (also harsh) and Lady Clairol (the color was too drab). After spending $75 for color application at the salon, I decided to try Preference Shine Extending Color in Ultimate Natural Blonde 10B. The result is dazzling! There was no dripping and the product did not burn my scalp. My hair is super shiny and soft, and it has also calmed my frizzies. If I have only one life, let me live it as a Preference Blonde!

I usually use Garnier Lumia with excellent results but I wanted a little more variation in my color this time for the holidays. I was going to use Feria, but I got cold feet when I went to buy it since my hair was super dry when I tried it before. I found a color in Preference I always wanted to try, Lightest golden brown, and bought it. It made my hair SUPER shiney!!! Lots of highlights and my Mom complimented my hair(okay...that NEVER happens). This is lighter than my natural color and the Preference color stays on 10 minutes longer than Lumia and is WAY stronger but my hair still feels healthy and I love the results!
