i feel like a traitor even writing this review, but only because i have always haaaated all forms of Great Last mascara. i was even somewhat excited when they came out with Great Lash BIG because i thought maybe with a different brush i would see what all the love was about, but that big brush didn't make a bit of difference to me in how totally blah the product made my lashes look. however, i am a sucker, and i was very intrigued by the construction of the brush for this newest addition to the Great Lash line, so i gave in and bought it, almost sure it would get relegated to the 'never use again' bin. but.... i really like it! first of all, like all the other Great Lash mascaras, the Very Black CANNOT be beat in terms of color saturation and deep, sooty, decadent BLACKness. i'm pretty sure (but not completely) that the actual mascara is the same as all the other versions, but it must be because of the genius brush that it can coat my lashes from root to tip in utter blackness w/o getting specks of mascara around my eyes and without weighing my lashes down. now, if there is one thing i'm FANATICAL about, it is curled eyelashes-- i do just about everything possible to make my lashes long and curled (Latisse, heated eyelash curler, Talika Lipocils, etc), so if a mascara weighs down my curl or doesn't hold it, it's out the door in a nanosecond. the truly unbelievable thing about this mascara is that it curls my lashes on it's OWN just during application. now i don't mean my usual, curled straight up to the ceiling lash look, but it actually lifts my lashes (WITH NO LASH CURLER USED) and makes them visible and cute looking! a kind of natural curl, unlike my regular super-dramatic curl. lately with my schedule, school, and just an overall tiredness i haven't been feeling like doing my whole ten minute lash curling routine in the morning, and this mascara came in at the perfect moment to give me some time off from that. now, speaking of it holding a curl from a lash curler, it does that well also, as i have tested it out when i had more time. as for performance, it doesn't flake, doesn't smear, doesn't run, doesn't weigh lashes down, washes off easily with regular cleanser and leaves lashes in a healthy condition. the brush is just genius at separating your lashes and getting even the teensiest inner ones coated because it tapers to a very thin point at the tip, and the thicker part is amazing at getting each and every longer lash evenly coated w/o overdoing it. i just can't believe how much i love this mascara, and wanted to give it it's due applause :)

I dont really like this. The formula is very sticky and doesnt seperate or volumize my lashes. Its not a very good mascara overall actually. I dont recommend it and I will not repurchase it.

Before this mascara I never understood what someone meant when they said " this mascara flakes" well I DO NOW! It really does flake pretty badly within two minutes and even with those makeup fixer sticks it is hard to get rid of them because they travel pretty far down my face.Because of this brushes shape( Christmas tree) you use the wide end of the brush for your outer lashes it makes to hard to do both eye with the same technique .
Which is just to much work I shouldn't need to figure out which hand to use on which eye to get the mascara to work especially on a mascara that flakes.

I am not a fan of the original great lash mascara. It smudged horribly on me. With that being said this is a great improvement to the original formula. I received this as a bzzz agent and was curious to try it after seeing the oddly shaped brush. I have this in the original formula in very black and it doesn't smudge at all. I really like the brush too, it has a full triangular shape that's perfect for getting all the little lashes in your inner and outer corners. It also provides good separation with no clumps, which is a huge must for me. I also liked that it doesn't have an odd smell like some maybelline mascaras do.

This mascara does have a few downfalls. It didn't volumize or lengthen enough for my preference. I prefer a full false eyelash look even for every day. I also had to apply 2 coats to fully coat my light blonde lashes, which is too time consuming for me when I'm in a rush in the morning. I probably wouldn't repurchase for myself but I would definetly recommend this if you need a lot of separation and like a natural look.

I love Clinique's Bottom Lash mascara for my lower lashes, but I don't like spending $10 for it. I saw this at Target for less than half the price and decided to giuve it a try. I still prefer Clinique, but this stuff does a darn good job at darkening my lower lashes without giving me raccoon eye,and personally I don't have a problem with the brush. Given the size of the brush, I would never use this on my upper lashes. I may buy Clinique again when I need a filler item to get their GWP.

Update: The Lots of Lashes tube has started to dry out a bit, making the mascara sticky and clumpy. I've changed my rating from 4 lippies to 2. I take it back; Clinique is worth the extra money. I'm done with Maybelline mascara forever.

The product was affordable and is packaged very cutely. I find that although the brush is small, it is very precise and useful for getting in the outer and inner corners of my eye. It lifts up lashes well and provides lots of definition, although volume is lacking. Overall a nice mascara for what you pay and works fairly well.

Well, this is the newest member to my great lash collection!
When I used this for the first time, I absolutely hated it. The brush was difficult to use, and my lashes all clumped.
Now, its okay.. I like the way it makes my lashes look. They look long and defined, but still natural. This mascara holds a curl pretty good, and well, makes me look like I have 'lots of lashes'. On the bottom, I don't tend to use it. I've tried a few times, but they end up all sticking together.
The only thing I don't like, is that the formula is funny. Which makes my lashes thin looking. I want a thick lash look. Although, if I used this along with a thickening mascara, I'm sure it'd work great.
Overall, I really like this mascara. The brush is great for getting into small creases where you need extra mascara.

after soo many years, maybelline finally perfected the fail of a mascara, great lash.. this mascara has a small heart like shaped wand. i got great separation and length with this. i got it in blackest black and it's a true black. i was soo surprised i even bought this, but it was super cheap ($3.xx @ walmart) so i figured, why not?!
ive tried the other great lash mascaras and they are all garbage to me, except the clear one that can be used to groom brows. they finally scored on this, hopefully they dont discontinue it

I'm not an original Great Lash user because I don't think it gives enough length and overall I think it's kinda an inferior mascara compared to the new stuff Maybelline has come out with. But the new brush intrigued me, so I bought this. First off, it was unusually clumpy. The brush's shape was ideal for one particular angle only. It was not fun trying to put it on my lower lashes. Disappointing.

I love this mascara. I think it's my new HG. (former was Maybelline Falsies and OneByOne) It's super cheap, I love the formula and the wand is amazing. It's a very unique applicator. In my opinion it's a melding of the Lash Blast type wand and the Lash Explosion wand. (the one that looks like a spiked ball) It separates my lashes fairly well, is super black, add length as well as a little volume. The only downside is that if you apply too much of the product it can get clumpy. But you really don't need to as it's good with just one coat.

*Update* Still like it... But I prefer One By One better.

Finally I can say I too am on the Great Lash wagon! Like so many others, the original formula was too wet, left my eyelashes a horrible clumped mess, and always smeared under my eyes. To boot, the formula would sting my eyes. Well many years later, I am reviewing an updated version of the original, and this time the original doesn't hold a candle to the new version!

Same classic pink tube and green cap, but what's inside is a welcome surprise! The brush is a vast improvement over the original brush. The formula is wonderful - not wet and messy. I have very sparse & short lashes. This is magic in a tube! Lengthens, darkens (I chose the brownish-black), and curls (after several coats since not only are my lashes short & sparse, they are stick straight!) without the use of a lash curler. I just hold the brush against my lashes for a few seconds and it holds the curl:)

Anyways, so happy Maybelline is expanding on the Great Lash Mascara Line. As the packaging is the cutest I've ever seen... and now it performs as well as it looks. HG? I think so!

I'm a BzzAgent, so I got to try this product for free. Initially, I used the wiggle method when applying this mascara (wiggling the wand back and forth, starting at the base of your lashes and moving up), but that only made my lashes stick together and look a little clumpy. I switched to the regular, apply-straight-up method, and that works SO much better! My lashes look very long, which makes my eyes look bigger and more open, which is good for me because I have small eyes. It makes them look a little dramatic too, and I love that look! All in all, if applied correctly, I think this mascara is great and I would recommend it.

I wanted to like this mascara so bad. Cute pink brush that's all I can say. The end of my lashes looked BENT and i don't curl my lashes:( It did not volumize by lashes and by the time I went back for the 2nd coat the mascara starting flaking off on my face. Yes I will be taking this $5 mascara back today.

I love this mascara. Gives me lots of length and just the right amount of volume. The brush really grabs onto my lashes and maximizes their size. The formula is wet, which allows for easy layering. But can also cause clumps if you're not careful. My only gripe is the brush itself! I have to turn the brush to do my left eye, which can be a pain. It never looks as good as my right eye. But other than that, this was very much worth the money. I would buy again.

I have this mascara in very black, and as the name would imply, it is VERY black, which I like. I believe the brush probably would not benefit those who do not switch hands to do their mascara as it is wide at one end and very thin at the other. Because I do switch hands, I find this mascara works extremely well on my lashes. The formula seems more dry than the original Great Lash, but that could be from the difference in applicator. My lashes do look longer, separated, and more voluminous when I use this mascara, so I would definitely repurchase. When removing the mascara it breaks up into little flakes, so it's important to wash your face after removing your eye makeup if you use a separate eye makeup remover or makeup removing wipes. It doesn't remove as easily as Maybelline claims. I have found my lashes will clump together if I'm not careful with the brush because of the formula, but it's very, very easy to avoid any clumping. It's a very buildable mascara. The tapered end of the brush does work exceptionally well to get my lashes at the inner corner of my eyes, much better than other mascaras with tapered brushes. Overall I would say I like the brush shape more than the mascara, but I really, really like the mascara, so I hope that says something.

So, just to clear up any misconceptions people who have used the original Greatlash may have about this product, this is NOT the same as the old and immensely crappy Greatlash that we all know Maybelline pays to have favorably reviewed in makeup magazines. No, this version of Greatlash probably uses the same formula but a different applicator, which makes all the difference in the world. I have very sensitive eyes and can comfortably wear this since I do not experience any smudging or flaking. The rubber bristle applicator ensures no clumps and an extremely clean look, HOWEVER, it's so clean that my eyelashes actually look a bit sparse, more so than with other mascaras. I've never had this happen before, and even when I apply multiple coats my lashes still seem puny. It gets each and every one of my lashes, but somehow they look...bare, almost like I'm not wearing anything but just naturally have fabulously separated lashes. I'll continue to use this because it doesn't make my lashes look bad, but rather a bit more natural than I was maybe expecting.

I fell for the hype based on the reviews here. Was excited to try this mascara out as I remembered Great Lash being in every teen magazine I bought back in the day. Anyway, I had quite a different experience with this mascara than other reviewers.

The wand is horrible. You can't get right into the base of the lashes unless you want to poke your eye out. My lashes stuck together using this mascara whereas other brands allowed them to separate. It made my lashes very limp, lost their curl, and had no shape at all.

When it dries, my lashes feel stiff and crispy. It's basically like I coated my lashes in a black paint that has no other benefits than color and crispiness. I had high hopes for this mascara as I'm looking for a cheaper mascara that will offer volume. This is definitely not it. I will not repurchase and would not recommend.

Wet formula, and very thickening! I wish is were waterproof, and I prefer it when these plastic brushes are rounded on the ends like Buxom or Rimmel. I hate Covergirl Lash Blast because the inner bristles are basically non-existent. This Maybelline brush is small enough to hit my inner lashes though, and strong enough to comb out any clumps I get. The clumps are because the formula is so wet and my lashes lean over and stick together, but the brush separates them again before they dry together.

I do prefer Buxom mascara, and should have just ordered it again instead of spending the same amount of money searching for a good drugstore mascara, but I'll use this until it dries out or it gets empty. I'll recommend it to people and buy it again in a pinch.

I wasn't a fan of this. I'm not sure how the shape of the brush is supposed to maximize your lashes. I found it awkward to use. The formula was a bit too runny for me too. Once again, I fell for the "cute" factor (the pink heart and the cute brush). I've left it in my makeup case just to get used up but I find myself opting to reach for my other mascaras over this one nearly every time.
