I'm with the perplexed masses. Years ago (like 40!) when I first tried this mascara it was because it was the only mascara going and everyone used it. It was in every hip gal's makeup bag. I also remember years of us gals with racoon eyes after outdoor concerts, rain soaked shopping trips, dances, emotions, etc. That was the look because that is what this mascara behaved like. I tried it again once or twice over the years (man I wish I had stock in this product) because I'll see it has once again hit the top 10 lists of makeup artists (sheesh) and each time I'm amazed and perplexed that this piece of crap wasn't dropped a gazillion years ago. Companies have a new mascara out almost every other month that have way more potential to be a favourite than Great Lash, and they discontinue and reformulate those others all the time. And yet Great Lash is like some sacred cow - they don't even update the goofy colours (which were very 'mod and hip' back then, but nauseating now). And the formula - it's so whatever - and a mess under the eyes. Since that is a major issue for me with most mascaras, Great Trash is just another under-achiever and doesn't get great reviews from me.

I love this mascara. I have naturally long lashes (medium volume) that happen to be blonde and stick-straight. Both the mascara and brush work perfectly to volumize, separate and curl my lashes. I've tried lots of Maybelline's other mascara brushes, from super-bushy to super-tiny, and this one gives me the most control and precision.
None of the fancy mascara samples I've received from Nordstrom/Sephora/Clinique have a formula or brush that works as well for my specific needs--which is fine by me, because Great Lash is dirt-cheap compared to Dior mascara.

This is a staple for me and has been for years. I used to have to use one mascara to separate and lengthen my lashes, and another to build volume. This one does it all and without the need for 100 coats like a lot of mascaras. It doesn't clump whatsoever, lasts all day, gives amazing volume, separates, lengthens...couldn't ask for any more. And it is SO cheap, I'd easily pay double for this. I first came across this when I saw it in a magazine years ago as it was voted the best mascara in some sort of contest so was intrigued by it, and I love the bright packaging too. I'm so shocked at the bad reviews on here, I've used all sorts of mascaras from cheap ones like this to MAC/UrbanDecay etc and I still can't fault this one!

Wanna know why makeup artists like this? Well it's because they usually use disposable mascara wands to apply mascara, so the wand of the mascara they buy is not important to them, just the formulation! And the formulation of the Great Lash is actually not bad, and it's the cheapest mascara around, so makes sense to get that when you're gonna go through tubes of it like crazy.
Of course for regular people like us, the wand is very important, and the wand of the Great Lash is pretty pathetic.
I have fairly long lashes, but they are poker straight. This Maybelline mascara actually does a decent job on them, so I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. It lengthens them a bit, gives a bit of natural-looking volume, makes them nice and dark, and holds a curl through the day. However, it does not separate them that well, takes ages to get the decent aforementioned effect because of the crappy small brush, and worst of all, it flakes a through the day (just a bit, but still, everyone hates flaking!). The formulation is a bit wet, but I actually like that.
Personally I won't be repurchasing this, but I think for the price it is actually not bad.

I have both the regular and waterproof in "Very Black", and they both give the same look after applied, the only difference is that the waterproof will hold up to extreme heat or swimming. I will say, that I have naturally thick, long lashes, so most mascaras end up looking the same on me. What makes me love Great Lash, is that it never clumps or makes my lashes brittle, and that it holds a curl wonderfully! I am lazy, so I am a one coat mascara kind of gal and both formula's give me a fanned lash look with a decent amount of both length and a little volume. It also tints my lashes a nice deep black. I very much appreciate the smaller wand and hate fat mascara wands (like CG Lashblast). So basically, this meets all my mascara needs, at a great pricepoint, and adorable packaging!

I got this in my early teens and i swear i remember the brush being a lot bigger! I bought this with money off, got home and was really disappointed, the brush is tiny and the mascara just builds on the lashes horribly, i used to buy this over and over in my early teens and now i just dont know why.

I used this when I was a little girl and didn't know better. Now I know better. This is wet, messy, clumpy, and just gross. Just... no.

This is a mascara that me, my mom, and my sisters all used for a while, but this is definitely not one I will get again for basically only one reason.
Pros: I found even the waterproof one with the little wand really great at building volume and making it look like I was wearing flasies, which I loved. It's also a great price for those that can wear it!
Cons: Since I have oily skin, it slid down my face quite prolifically. People with dry skin (like my mom and sisters!) shouldn't have that issue.
Don't get the one with the wand with a heart shaped tip though! It was just so adorable that I couldn't resist and it SUCKS. It gets mascara everywhere and clumps eyelashes together like no one's business! The waterproof and giant wand ones though don't have that problem.

Tiny wand. Crap Mascara. Does Not Work. Worst mascara ever!

First, of all, really like the packaging! The pink and green is so vibrant.
BUT this mascara, although the price is alluring, is not worth it. The wand is so tiny and it does nothing for my already short lashes.

I used this mascara for a long time when I was a teen before I really knew all the mascara options out there. I don't hate it, not at all. It doesn't give va-va-voom lashes some other mascaras, but for what it is, it's a great staple mascara. I received compliments when wearing this just as much as when wearing a $30 product. Give it a try!

I know this one is always considered one of the best but I am not sure why. Formula is thin and runny. I have long lashes and this actually makes them look short. Maybe at the time when there weren't better formulas on the market this one was good...but seems there are better alternatives now.

This mascara is such a classic, I honestly think its been around longer than Ive been alive... I am a mascara junkie and have many others I would rate higher than this- but for an everyday classic mascara, you can never go wrong with the green and pink tube! I give it a 4/5 for how it defines and seperates the lashes: the brush is that where it does a good job making sure you dont have clumps of lashes (or spider lashes) and it gives you the right amount of definition and volume for an everyday natural wear mascara. I give it a 3/5 for the look of longer lashes:the it doesnt wow me or do anything special with lengthening my lashes, however mascara in general will make your lashes appear longer so its not exactly a fail. If you are looking for a mascara spicifically for lengthening, i would pass on this one. It gives a fair amount of volume but it applies and looks so natural that the length is not a focus with this mascara. Lastly, i give it a 5/5 for applying evenly. No matter how many layers of mascara you apply with this tube, it always applies evenly. You will never have to worry about chunks of product all uneven on the wand- making it hard to apply evenly on both sides because the consistency is pretty thin and the brush does a good job distributing the product. At just over $5 per bottle, and ulta usually running a buy one get one 50% off sale, you cant go wrong with this simple, staple mascara!

Worst mascara I have ever used. Clumped my lashes up, and flaked. Does give you a decent "lift", but nothing more. Don't waste your money on this, try Falsies or Clump Crusher.

I have tried this so many times over the years, and I always hope to love it as so many makeup artists swear by it. For me, it is too watery...I prefer a drier formula. And I find that it really doesn't do much for my lashes, which would be fine if I could build it...but it clumps. Overall, I think I've tried it for the very last time. Maybelline has great mascaras (or I think so...love Full'n'Soft) but this is not one of them for me.

It's a given that I had to try this product sometime in my makeup lifetime. The formula itself is watery, which I tend to like more than drier formulas and the length that this mascara gave me was great. I won't repurchase because I don't do washable formulas; when my eyes tear up, I end up looking like a raccoon with this mascara on.

I've been using this product literally for decades, since I was a teenager. And in all those years, it's been reliably great. Now they seem to have changed the formula. It leaves tons of little clumps on your lashes that won't come off, no matter what makeup-removal product you use; and I've tried everything. In fact, you lose eyelashes trying to remove them. I never thought I'd throw out a Maybelline product, but I have, and I'll never buy it again. They took a perfect product and just ruined it.

It's not the WORST mascara. I actually kind of like this mascara because my lashes are thin so, the little bit of clumpiness works well for my lashes. I won't be repurchasing because there are better mascaras out there but for now, I'll finish using this mascara.

I gave this another chance due to its popularity with some of my favorite makeup idols. Still not wowed, but after using it a few more times, I'm liking it more!
Pros: Cheap, easy to find, cute pink tube.
Cons: Does not particularly do much for my lashes in comparison to other mascaras, and I was hoping it would be a little more gentle on my lashes/easier to remove due to it being a more natural-looking mascara.
My new thing is counting how many lashes I lose each day when reviewing mascaras! The first night I wore this mascara, I used Lancome Bi-Facil and very gently tried to remove the mascara (which I did not apply an excess amount of by any means), and I lost two lashes. The second time I wore it, I didn't lose any. Third and fourth times, I lost one lash. Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth times, I don't think I lost any lashes! Ninth time I wore it, I lost one lash, and tenth time I wore it, I lost four lashes! Not good, but on average, it's not the worst mascara. However, I'm not sure if it's a HG or not, I want bigger lashes!

This is my favorite mascara of all time. Iv'e been using it for 10 years and have alternated with others just to compare and I have always come back to this one. Everyone is different but for me I like it because it doesn't feel too heavy and at the same time it gives my lashes just the right amount of drama that I love! For me personally, I am a dedicated GREAT LASH user, in blackest black! :D
