I bought this product, when the hair powders got very popular.
Drugstore brands just never delivered what I was looking for, so I went straight ahead to Aveda and bought the pure abundance hair potion.
Again, itīs the kind of product you really should know, what you want from it. Itīs simply too expensive to waste your money and find out, that itīs not working for you.
My hair is oily at the roots, fine and limp, but I have a mass of hair, which is about shoulderlenght. I need volume at the crown and nothing greasy or rich, which would weigh my hair down.
The hair potion comes in a plastic bottle with a cap.
You should never ever let the hair potion get wet or shake it. That ruins the powder and you wonīt be able to get the powder out of the bottle.
Now thatīs the tricky part with this product: You need to find out for yourself, how much product you need and where to apply it best.
Honestly, too much product just makes a greasy mess out of my hair. I usually apply the product at my crown, near my scalp, because thatīs where I need the volume.
You apply it on dry hair and there are separate ways to apply it.
The powder can be put into your palm and then you rub your palms together and spread the liquified powder on your hair.
But thereīs a technique a hairdresser at the Aveda salon showed me and you can watch it on Avedaīs youtube channel in the "How to: Weightless volume in 3 ways" video too.
You part your hair at the crown or on top of your head, so you have 2 sections. Then you take the bottle, position the cap of the bottle just where the hair is parted, maybe hold it horizontally and squeeze the bottle. The powder comes out in a little powder cloud and gets directly at the roots, where I want the volume.
I do this several times around the top of my head. Then you get with your hand in the hair and shake it to activate the powder and create volume. It takes a little practice, but is effective.
Itīs one of these products, you need to have the right technique to use it or itīs worthless.
The finish is matte finish, so if youīre into glossy hair, this one may not be the right product for you.
Otherwise, itīs pretty undetectable and you wonīt feel like you have any product in your hair, given you didnīt use too much.
It gives texture and volume to the hair and holds my oily roots at bay.
If I use it, Iīd say, I get a pretty good bedhead, messy, surfer, rockstar style for my hair. Looks effortless and with the right technique only takes my a few minutes to style my hair.
To re-activate it through the day, you can just get with your hand in your hair and shake it a little bit.
Especially on bad hair days (which means limp, oily, lifeless hair with my hair type) this boosts the volume and saves my hair from looking really bad.
The downside of this product is the price: I paid 23 Euros for the very small bottle. But it lasts and delivers good results with my hair.
I honestly donīt know, if this works on other hair types than fine and thin hair.
But if you have fine, thin, limp or oily hair, you might give this a try.

I was fortunate to get this in a swap. For reference, I have fine, color-treated hair cut in inverted bob (stacked in back, longer in front) and I insist on covering up my back part/teasing for volume. I cannot stand the tiny applicator tip on this bottle - I have a helluva time ever getting product out (and yes, I've read all the helpful hints).
That said, this definitely provides me w/ additional volume for backcombing. But, I get the exact same results w/ the much cheaper Got 2 Be Powderful Volumizing Powder for a fraction of the price and a much easier dispensing container = I won't purchase.

It took me a long time to figure out ow to use this product. The way that has workd best for me is to open the bottle and gently tap around my hairline and part on dry hair then work through with my fingers.
It does appear that my hair is 'bulked up' which is what I'm looking for. But my hair feels horrible. It feels very matted and hard to get my fingers or even a comb through. I personally like my hair to feel natural so this is a deal breaker for me.

DO NOT SHAKE!! DO NOT SHAKE!! AGAIN DO NOT SHAKE!!!! Ok ladies. This is an amazing product for adding volume in selected areas and for teasing as well. Especially when combined with Avedas air control or control force. The bottle is designed with the tiny opening for control so u don't end up with an unwanted glob. I graduated from the institute and was taught how to apply. Section the hair where u want to apply, turn the bottle upside town and tap gently. DO NOT SHAKE!! It will turn to gel in the bottle. That's what it was designed to do on your scalp. Shake your hair to activate to product. Whoever sold it to u should have told u. Protect the product from heat and moisture. It can also be applied to the underside of a section for teasing. Start with a small amount. U can always add but removing requires washing and starting over. Hope this helps

I have fine hair and it's always cut in a textured way for volume. I use a lot of Aveda products, but none of the hair stuff...Until now.
Last summer I heard about Big Sexy Hairs texture powder. I tried it and liked it a lot at first...Then I noticed how greasy it made my hair. I have oily skin anyways and this made it like a oil slick after a few hours. I really liked the way it made my hair super textured and the volume it gave though. I started searching around for something similar and found Tigi's hair candy powder. It is oil free and only a buck more. I have been using that and it worked good.
A few days ago I got my hair cut at an Aveda Salon and they styled it using the hair potion. I had no idea Aveda carried this type of product and I really loved how it made my hair. The stylist used it the same way I use mine. She blew out my hair, then lifted up sections and squeezed the powder on the roots/scalp area, then backcombed. I fell in love! My hair had major volume and I could still run my fingers through it..Unlike the other brands powder products I have used. It did still feel a bit tacky and well not freshly washed but that is the key.
Freshly washed and healthy hair don't style very well.
The thing I also like about this product is that it is about two times the size of the other brands. I shop at Cosmo Prof and Salon Centric for liscensed professionals. The products I got at cost were still $10. So retail they would be about $20. The Aveda one is only $24 and double the size...So, its a good deal too!
Sorry this is long winded. I just really like this product and wanted to share the info with you all.

I really wanted to like this product, bought it ages ago when it was hyped in the UK press (I go to an Aveda salon and use their shampoos and conditioners) however, I just can't get it to work. I find however hard I try to follow all the tips etc I just end up with sticky hair that looks a bit of a mess.To mop up oil, I find Batiste dry shampoo way better and for styling, I use the Aveda volumising tonic which is great. Sorry, but a fail for me.

I used this quite a long time ago and really liked it at first. I just started going to an Aveda salon and fell in love with the color and products they use. I decided to purchase again and I was not sorry. I agree with the other reviewers, you need to apply this carefully or it will end up a huge glob. I travel for my job and am concerned about the plane. I will just carry it with me and keep it upright. All in all, it is a good product, does what it promises and I will buy again.

I wanted to like this, but it just didn't work for me. I had hoped it would give my fine hair volume -- and perk it up on days I skipped a wash (since it absorbs oil) -- but the feel of it was unpleasant to me. It had a slightly dirty, gunky feel (even when using just a little) and it did not add significant volume. There are plenty of good Aveda products out there, but I don't care for this one. I prefer Aveda's Volumizing Tonic or Phomollient.

This is like a miracle in a bottle for my extremely fine, lifeless hair. The 'potion' is a powder but after about 3 uses it changed to a liquid. Not sure what I did wrong but even though some reviewers have said they have had to chuck it out after this happened, I just have kept using it as a liquid on damp hair and it works the same.
If you use anymore than about 1ml it's too much for mid chin length hair. I just rub it into damp hair and blow dry then straighten and the amount of volume I get is unbelievable. I got emotional the first time I used it! I also tease my hair every day and it dramatically reduces the amount of teasing I need to do to achieve big hair.
I've tried dry shampoo to get the same effect but dry shampoo build up leaves my hair more dull and this doesn't really make my hair less shiny.
I am going to try Schwarzkopf Osis Dust It as well to see which is better, as it's cheaper. Even though the potion is very expensive for a small bottle I think it's worth it completely.
EDIT: Bought a new one which hasn't turned to liquid. Still LOVING it. Maybe wouldn't work as well for longer hair but I just apply it to the roots.
Didn't like Schwarzkopf Osis anywhere near as much.

this stuff is only for desperate people with awfully thin hair. for all the rest it's not worth the suffering.
i admit, it gives volumes and solves the problem of oily scalp - with it i am able to go for 3-4 day instead of 2. however, if feels like cement in your hair, you can't comb it, you can't run you fingers through it. even though i tried to apply it on the roots, the ends of my shoulder length hair became dull and stiff.
it's veeeery difficult to apply - you can't see the powder coming out so i often overdo one part of my head whereas the other remains virtually product free. and you can't distribute it as you can't comb throuogh your hair anymore! it also becomes a paste upon contact with water and it becomes even trickier to apply. i left the bottle in the bathroom for a couple of days and because of humidity the paste formed inside the bottle - i had to though away like half of the bottle.
really, if you have more than a dozen hairs on your head, explore other options!

This is good stuff, does exactly what it says it will do. Great for short hair, to give you that choppy tousled textured look. It does take away a little shine, but I'll sacrifice shine for style any day. It would also be a great product to use if you are planning an updo, it will give your hair some stickiness which helps to hold it up, keeps the hair from sliding out of the style.
I have a new bottle, so I am hoping it won't turn liquid on me before I can use it up like other reviewers have mentioned. I will complain to Aveda for sure if that happens, because for the price, it shouldn't. Even a cheaper product shouldn't do that. Since the product in my bottle is still fine, I am going to say that I would purchase this again....but I won't if it goes bad on me.
Speaking of price, it is a little over the top, but as long as I get results, I am ok with that. The thing is, that old spray shampoo product, the one that has been around since the 70's, called "Psssst", can still be found at some drugstores for about $7 a can, and the results from using it are not all that different than with the Aveda product, esp if you run a dab of texture wax thru your hair first. I haven't bought Pssst in a while, as I am trying to stay away from aerosols, but if you don't care about the environment, give it a try!

I have a shorter graduated bob with layers and I've been using this product for over 4 years now. I had my stylist show me how to properly use it and I think that makes all the difference. After I blow dry, I only sprinkle it in my roots at the top of my head and a little on the sides. I turn the bottle upside down and gently tap the bottom of the bottle to let the product sprinkle out. I start off w/ only a little bit, run my fingers through my roots and fluff up, and add more if needed. It gives my hair volume, lift and that 'next day' look.
The only major complaint is that yes, the powder forumula does turn to a liquid goop if I keep it in my bathroom (humidity causes this, as does shaking the bottle). I store it in my bedroom in a drawer to help with this issue, but I can say that I've never finished a full bottle. It usually turns to goop liquid with about 1/4 left. For the price, that's a real bummer, but I keep buying it because it gives me results, that and I'm a fan of Aveda products.

I have very fine, limp hair (although lots of it) and have tried just about every volumising product out there, but this is definitely the best.
It took me a few attempts to get to grips with it- you don't need much and it works differently on wet hair to dry hair (but it can be used on both) but it gives the most fantastic instant volume that really lasts.
The downside? I do get product residue in my hair and it feels a little sticky at the root if I apply too much, but that's a small price to pay for the amount of volume it delivers and using a clarifying shampoo once a week clears away any build up.

I tried to find this type of product in a reccomended brand but I couldnt and then I came across this. I have fine curly hair and I wanted a more volumized look that would look more natural and hassle-free as oppose to clip-in extensions which I couldnt be bothered to start using so I heard about this dry hair volumizing powders.
This hair powder is white and you literally just style your ahair as nnormal and when you have finish tilt your head upside down and shake this over areas you want to volumize. Try a little at a time at first and do not rub in. If you rub in it makes your hair messy and knotty. This white powder imedaitely turns to a glue like substance - similar to hair spray and 9instantly gives it volume and gives it a messed up but sexy look.It is amazing hoe such a lttle amount creates an impact and I really work this into the crown of my head and that is abalding area.
When I used this on my birthday 0- yes special occasions noyl as this was about Ģ17.00 I think - I cannot afford to use this often as it is about 30ml and really you will probably get about 25 uses of you are lucky and mind you that would not be using a lot at a time. I do rate this though because it does boost your confidence as welkl as your hair because it creates the illusion of thick hair and also more hair in your thinning areas and if like me you have thicker hair everywhere except for the crown then this reall yhelps even things out and allows me to wear my hair down because I can volumize the crown now. I do finhs off with a bit of hair spray all over for the aaurance that my illuioned hair will last the night. I do think it is worth it but mind you if I could afford it I would use it every day so I am hoping that the high-street catches on to this product so other cheaper brands can sell and market something similar so I can afford it daily. Love it!

I have very long fine hair and usually turn my head over and spray the roots close to my part and slightly tease to add volume. With this product now, I just sprinkle a little powder on the top of my head and then take my fingers and shake my hair close to the scalp to work in the powder. And WOW....instant volume with no teasing. I love this stuff and will by another bottle when I run out.

I confess this product is nice, but simply too over priced to ever repurchase again. I have normal- oily hair, medium thickens, medium length (a little passed my shoulders) dark hair.
PROS: (1) a little goes a long way. a sprinkle of this does work to give me volumized refreshed hair. It was great when I needed to refresh my hair at the end of the day, or if I wanted to skip a day of showering (it absorbs the oilies!). (2) Restores style of my hair while making it look better than when i first styled it! (3) smells like wonderful Aveda goodness. (4) Feels really nice when you sprinkle it on your roots because it has a fascinating 'cooling' affect. you can feel exactly where you have applied it making it easy to evenly distribute it.
CONS: (1) the price, it is so expensive for what little product you get. If you use it frequently, one small bottle will only last 4-6 weeks. (2) packaging is terrible and hard to work with, it is easy to accidentally poor too much out and waste precious product. (3) Not travel friendly. For those who do not know, it starts out as a powder, and when shaken/sprinkled onto your scalp it becomes a paste like substance that feels dry. It's the same feeling your hair gets when you have been in the salty water at the beach. That's why it works so well to give you great volume and absorb any oil. However, if you shake the bottle the entire product will turn into a paste rendering it completely useless. It can only sit on your counter at home!
Personally, I won't repurchase this product. It does work, there is no doubt about that. However it is a high maintenance product that is super expensive for what you get. I rather use a cheaper alternative such as Klorane Dry Shampoo- it may not smell as nice but it gives me the exact same results without the drying 'beach hair' effect for a third of the cost.
Happy Shopping!

I'm on the fence about this product.
It does help hair look a bit thicker... a bit.
It does give a lift at the roots.
It does add texture and hold to your style.
But it's a B^%$# to comb through afterwards.
It's really expensive.
The packaging leaves something to be desired.
(you can tap the bottle - while hoovering it over your head to drop the product where you want it - hopefully a big dump doesn't come out - or that area of your hair with be super sticky. ---- or you can squeeze the sides of the bottle to make it fluffy little clouds of product into your hair - both are extremely unpredictable..... You can also pour it into your hands and then try to work it in to your hair - but that result was worse for me than the first too options.
I have repurchased this 3 times... and bought one for my sister when she borrowed mine and loved it. But since then - I think we've both forgotten about this product in the last year or so.
I guess I've fallen in love with Dry Shampoo as a styling agent --- (current fave T3 Dry Shampoo in Auburn- yes, they have one for red hair ladies!)
So, Pure Abundance Hair Potion is not horrible - I have repurchased it - but it's not HG material. It's kinda funky - kinda sticky - but kinda cool too.

Wow !! This stuff is nuts..... it really gives flat hair a vicious BOOST !! And I love it !!!!!! While it is expensive, a little goes a very long way... and it is SO handy because it is small enough to be purse friendly. If you don't have time to shower in the morning, this will take away the oilies on your roots, almost like a dry shampoo. It doesn't really have a noticable smell at all, which is nice, and it doesn't leave your hair looking powdery.
The ONLY THING in the whole wide world that actually gives me real volume that lasts. I cannot say enough good things about it. I love it :)

This is the most amazing thing for fine hair ever. Unfortunately, at 20+ a tiny bottle, it's not the most affordable product. However, it's worth the purchase. I put a little on my fingertips and rub it into the roots of my hair and I get killer volume all day. I'm out of it right now and I'm trying to get ahold of some! Kind of a bummer that it's only available in salons or online. This stuff is magic!
Found it at a Dillards counter. Best 23$ I ever spent! SO glad I have it again, I will never again be without this product!

So i've gone through a whole bottle of this. The bottle itself is very small, but you really only need a couple of shakes per use. The best use I found for this was as a dry shampoo. & although I love how weightless it was, to get any volume at my roots I needed alot more of this and in the end left my hair kind of greasy. I wanted so badly for this to be my little hair potion, but the search continues...
