This foundation makes your skin looks so dry and flat! It is also very cakey and masky looking on the face. Very hard to remove, I had to use ponds to get it off. It also clogged many of my pores and caused a lot of acne! Super expensive too!

When they started making the "Double Wear" I believe they might have discontinued the original "Double MATTE". Now I have used both. The Double WEAR is pretty much similar, except its a bit more flexible and blendable. But since I have used this one (double MATTE) since 1998, I was a bit sad when I couldn't find it during the last few years. SO glad they brang it back! I love this one a little better because it controls oil and shine even more than the Double Wear. A must for oily skin tones like myself! This literally is the best foundation out there (next to Double Wear, and Revlon Colorstay). You can be in 105 degree weather and this won't even come off or rub off. TRY THIS!

I just joined this site so I could write up my experience with EL double matte. This was my absolute HG foundation....very full coverage AND controlled oil without being too matte looking. I wore it all the time despite being somehow matched completely wrong ( a very dark skinned SA gave me cool fresco, the second lightest, and I am extremely fair.) I went back and told her what happened and she said the lightest was ivory so I bought it without even trying it. I then went to get my drivers license picture done. Boy was I surprised. I looked like I had a mud mask on!!! Ivory? Or should I say "ivory....yeah right." I went to the Lancôme counter and the SA was appalled anyone had sent me home with either one of those colors. When she took a section of it off to test her colors there was a very evident white circle there. I was sooooo angry that I had been walking around like that for who knows how long!! I obviously don't have much time to look in the mirror. I knew it was a little dark but the orange was coming , i assume, from a horrible horrible oxidation. It went on 2-3 shades too beige and an hour later was 20 shades too orange! And yes i was wearing a good primer. I searched and searched only to find that Estée lauder doesn't go any lighter than that dark orange ivory! Why? That's what I would like to know. Maybe EL really is the "old lady" makeup some people claim it to be and take into account 60 years of sun damage and liver spots?? I don't know, but I do know I am by far not the fairest person in the world. I am NC 20 in MAC, a very common shade. Why would a company create a product that shuns half the population? Anyway, I will still repurchase this if they ever get the colors together and they won't oxides. Has anyone else had this problem?

This is a very nice foundation with a natural matte finish. It feels very light on the skin. If you have normal to combination oily skin and you like a matte look you will love this. However, if you have very oily skin don't expect it to have the same staying power of the Estee Lauder Double Wear (my Holy Grail Foundation.) I will repurchase again but will only wear it during winter when my skin isn't so oily.

I am giving this a 3 and only for one reason. The poor color choices!! I went to the Estee counter and got a match...so I thought. I came home and reapplied to my whole face. My face looked PINK with orange undertones. When I thought they gave me the wrong color, I looked online and yep, thats the lightest it goes. THE LIGHTEST. I am not too fair by any means but I am definately not pink or orange. I am more like a fair kinda yellow tone. I did try to tan with this, meaning I self tanned to maybe make it look believable for my neck, body etc. But still the color is way too pink even when I do look tan. I love the coverage, love everything about it, but wrong color. I can't believe they haven't gotten more complaints. I am going to complain.

Whenever I wear this product I feel as though I'm clogging my pores and as though I'm hiding my skin. It does what it says on the packet but for me it's just to full on-more of a night time look. It covers acne well but during the day your face will become oily.

For reference, my skin is combination, not too acne prone but often sensitive. My skin is leans towards neutral/warm but I have a a lot of redness in my cheeks which causes many SA's to mistake me as cool-toned. I was matched to Cool Ivory and given a sample, which I used for 2 days.
Like Revlon Colorstay, you have to work fast and apply in sections. This works better if you apply it in a stroking down motion w/brush, fingers or sponge...I tried stippling with a brush and it did not look good! I think because of the texture and finish if it is stippled on when it dries it looks powdery and spackle-y when it dries.
COVERAGE: definitely medium to full. More coverage than MAC SFF and Colorstay for sure. I don't really think you would need to layer this, in fact because of it's finish a thick layer wouldn't look good.
FINISH/OIL CONTROL: Definitely matte. If you have normal or even slightly dry skin I wouldn't recommend this because for the first few hours it is very matte and would cling to every dry flake of skin. As the day wears on though, I didn't find that it had any extra-oil control. I still got the shiny nose and forehead after 3 hours or so while sitting at my desk at work. The name "Double-Matte" was misleading...I was really hoping for something with a little extra oomph in terms of keeps oilies at bay.
LASTING ABILITY: Awesome!! It does stay on and keeps it coverage better than Colorstay from my experience. I find that CS does transfer on me and this had minimal transferring on my cell phone or even when I blotted my forehead with a tissue. Wears evenly despite the fact that I didn't find it to be extra oil-controlling.
IN SUMMARY: This is a solid, all-day foundation with medium to full coverage that gives Revlon CS a run for it's money and makes MAC's SFF look like a joke. This did not turn orange or change color on me. Unfortunately, I didn't find a close enough color match that made me feel comfortable making a purchase. I am in the NC/NW15 range of MAC depending on formula and the Cool Ivory (this lightest shade) was NOT IVORY! It was more of a light neutral beige that ended up being a bit too dark for my skin.
I would re-purchase this if they had a color match for my skin AND if I didn't live in a hot, humid climate. Don't get me wrong, this didn't make my skin any more greasy than any other foundation, it was just disappointing because of the "double-matte" claim. This is a great option in terms of coverage and lasting ability but for now I am choosing not to re-purchase this foundation.

Overall, I really like this foundation a lot but there are a few reasons why I won't be buying it again. I LOVE the coverage and the overall consistency of the foundation, the downsides for me are that it doesn't control oil worth a shit and they don't have a very big selection of colors. The whole not controlling oil thing isn't new to me. I have tried what feels like hundreds of products and foundations and remedies that claim to reduce oil or control oil and none of them have ever worked. The shade I have is way too pink for my skin and from what I could see there isn't one color they sell in this foundation that will even come close to matching my skin. The price to me isn't worth it if it doesn't control oil and doesn't match my skin.

I received a sample of this. I am looking for a foundation that controls oil but provides all day wear. This really did a great job, so much so that I was complimented on my makeup. However, it is a bit orangey and somewhat hard to blend. In the summer, it's a yes. In the winter, probably not.

I looked like a hot-mess with this foundation on! This foundation has such a nasty feel, I honestly don't know how people can stand the feeling of it. The color choices of this foundation is horrible. There not too many shades to choose from, but worst of all all of the shades seem to have a pink undertone. I just don't get why EL can't seem to get the picture that not everyone looks good in a pink undertone. So the color choice isn't so great. The color I got matched up with was Cool Tawny, in the bottle it didn't look too bad, it looked pretty yellow enough for my skin. When applying this foundation you have to work in small sections across your face because it does dry really, really fast. Blending this foundation was not an easy task for me because it dried super fast. When I wore this foundation, it was very mask-liked, very. You could have definitely tell that I had makeup on, and since I am also really oily, I looked super, super cakey by the end of the day. This is a full coverage foundation, after applying this foundation on, I didn't find the need to apply any additional concealer. It dries matte and I really liked that about the foundation at the time. This is actually the only foundation that I have found that kept my matte for the longest time, but this was the only pro about this foundation. I definitely would not recommend this foundation for dry skin gals. I would not recommend this oily gals either, but a lot of the gals on here with oily skin seems to really like it, so may be it's just me who is a bit too picky. This foundation is really thick and I felt like it was suffocating my skin. When I removed it, the consistency was definitely hard to get off, I kept on scraping and scraping. With that being said, this foundation wouldn't be good for acne-prone skin, it would clog pores big time. All in all, I hated this foundation, the packaging sucks, no pump, it looks really, really cakey on me, and the color choices were horrible! Definitely not going to be re-purchasing this foundation!

Even though I am 37, I still have an extremely oily T-zone. No amount of primers, powder, and mattifiers can handle the grease. I just assumed I was doomed to makeup melt off and a greasy face. I stumbled across the other reviews for Double Matte and was pleased with the mostly positive reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I LOVE this foundation. The color match is perfect, it doesn't feel tight or masklike, and it wears beautifully throughout the day. It absorbs the oil on my face and gives a smooth appearance to my skin. I apply it with a foundation sponge for less coverage and my fingers for fuller coverage. The coverage is listed as medium matte. For reference, I wear Warm Bisque in EL Double Matte, 1N1 Ecru in EL Double Wear, #117 in MUFE HD, Revlon Colorstay Buff, and MAC NC20.

I like this product...unfortunately, the color selection is slim. The sales lady talked me into Warm Ginger (but I was tanning at the time) Well, with a half hour wait at the tanning salon everyday, I haven't been in there in about 2 maybe 3 weeks. So, needless to say, this looks like I'm wearing an orange mask. I am usually very pale. So, I am returning it tonight for Warm Tawney. I have tried every foundation known to man. Still havent found one that will satisfy 100%, but for now, this one is a favorite.

Color: I have been buying this product for the last two years. At first, I bought it online in warm-tawny, but I found that the color was too dark for me at the time. I lived in a colder place, and I was paler. Instead of wasting the product, I would mix the make up with a lighter shade of Double Wear (2W) or Double Wear light. It worked pretty well. Now that I am darker, I find that warm-tawny matches well with my skin tone. At the same time, I wish that EL shades could be less red-toned. I find that most EL shade always give me a red look that isn't natural. When I put on this foundation, people can tell that I have foundation on, which I do not like even thought the coverage is good. I am more olive-toned, so I wish that EL would put some yellow in it to counter the red...but please don't over do it like MAC Foundations.
Last: I usually put on moisturizer, milk of magnesium, and primer before I put on this foundation. I then apply it on with a brush for good coverage. I layer it with bronzer and finally, blot powder. Still, I think that within 2 hours, you can see some shine in my face especially my nose and cheeks. Initially, this is okay because the foundation mixed with the oil even out my skin tone and blend the foundation. However, as the hours progress, I have to blot my face with a paper towel. THis is when the make up comes off a little bit. I would say that this foundation has a life of 7-8 hours on my face. This could be because I am really oily on my nose and cheeks.
Oil Control: I find that it doesn't make my oil skin worst, but I don't think that it control shine as well as it claims. Keep in mind that my skin is very oily too.
Matte Finish: I wish that the foundation maker could find a balance between Dewey and Matte finishes. Although I have oily skin, it doesn't mean that my face is oily when I put it on. A matte finish looks really unnatural and cakey on my face initially. The oil then blends out the make up in one or two hours.
Price: It is sort of pricey, but I find that I can use it for a year or more. I can also blend this foundation color with another that is less thick.
I am reluctant to call this my HG foundation. I don't think it is "the one." I am going to shop around until I can find a foundation that gives me a more natural look. I will buy it again if I can't find something else.

EL Double Matte along with MAC Pro Longwear are my go to foundations for perfect flawless skin look on special occasions.
I am very oily but double Matte keeps me pretty close to matte, maybe satin-y for hours and hours with no need for touch-ups. As others have mentioned, the color range is not the best aspecially for yellow-toned complexions. Where MAC does it right by me with NC25, Estee Lauder is too pink.
I have this is Warm Tawny and the color is just okay. Great finish though.
Double Wear by EL is also quite amazing with similar color issues.

Great texture, but horrible colors. The Cool Fresco shade got darker and more orange as I tried to build coverage. It's a real shame, since this foundation controlled my oil fairly well, but the color choices are very poor. Lancome Fresh Wear controlled my oil even better than this did and matched my face perfectly.

this is an ultra-matte finish liquid makeup from estee lauder, and one of the few ultra matte makeups in the department store that specifies that it is for oily skin. I have normal/sensitive skin (that tends to be oily in the center) and i bought this foundation in search of an ultra matte liquid that would keep my skin shine free, but that was still fragrance free and tested. So I went to estee lauder because they have a lot of forumlas and finishes and shades to choose from. It has an spf of 15 with an active ingredient of octinoxate 2.2%, which is a short hand written for octyl methoxycinnamate, which is a sunscreen agent used to protect skin primarily from the sun's UVB rays (Sources: www.photodermatology.com/sunprotection.htm; and Skin Therapy Letter, 1997, volume 2, number 5, www.dermatology.org/skintherapy).
application: the directons on the bottle say to shake and then apply with fingertips, but it is a little challenging to do that without a pump, but it can be done, and the absence of a pump does not make this makeup any less efficient. It doesn't require vigorous shaking, just a gentle shake will do. If i'm first applying it in the morning, then i'll use my fingertips, but if i'm touching it up throughout the day, i use a blending sponge.
finish: the formula is a bit thick, so the finish is a heavy ultra matte. this foundation is full coverage matte finish so i really wouldn't use a powder with this because it just adds layers of makeup without the need of it.
staying power: as with any liquid makeup, its not going to last for more than 8 hours because its a liquid and liquids do move and glide with activity. I would say it stays for 5 - 7 hours on me. It also stays longer if you use a moisturizer underneath on already cleansed skin. (I use olay complete spf 30 sensitive skin lotion)
shades: i'm not sure if i understand why so many reviewers feel that these shades are awful and lacking. I did notice however, that there are shade gaps between warm bisque and cool dusk and also between warm tawny and warm ginger. When i went to estee lauder the SA (who was the counter manager) pulled the three darkest shades, and I was matched to 23 warm ginger, which is a medium/deep bronze shade, (a great shade for women of color)
my biggest recommendation is that if you buy this, please use a sunscreen moisturizer underneath, it holds the makeup together throughout the day.
