Shimmer lights just does not work. I have light brown, dark blonde/light blonde that is quite brassy after lifting the dark brown dye out of my hair. Parts of my hair are brassier than others. This stuff is supposed to work on any shade of warmth/brassiness. It has done NOTHING for me and I've been using to for weeks, even with he conditioner and leaving it on for a long time. Heck, I even SLEPT with this stuff in and not even the slightest bit of brassiness was toned down. All it did was dry my hair out. I just ordered the Joico version of a violet shampoo and conditioner, and I had heard great things about it so hopefully that will help. But this product is garbage and smells horrible on top of not working and drying your hair out. Do not waste your time or money!!

I will start off by saying this has a "old lady" smell lol but it is tolerable.

So a few nights ago I went to Sally's to get hair dye and some developer and lighten my hair to a sandy blonde not knowing how it would go I got this for back up in case I had any brassyness.

So last night I got to it lol I stripped out my hair color did a conditioning treatment and put in the new dye...when I rinsed out my hair I saw brass! So of course I immediately used this and could tell a immediate difference, the brass was totally toned down!

I'm very happy I picked this up cuz it really made a difference! The scent could be better but in the end the results make up for it.

Update 6/3/13...Now that I have been using this for a while I really love it even more! I lather it up in my hair and let it sit for 5mins before rinsing and its just amazing how it brightens up my blonde hair.

This will be a permanent staple for me as long as I got the blonde going on!

i left it on for 10 mins but wouldnt recommend to keep it on that long 5 mins is prob good enough because my hair was tinted a little bit purple after so i washed it out with mane and tail but let it sit on my head for 10 mins than scrubbed it out... this shampoo is very powerful be very careful esp if it gets on your rug, countertop, etc. overall great product :) does what it says.

Absolutely love this product and couldn't live without it! I don't have to use it often, just once or twice after each coloring. It really does wonders to remove any yellow or brassy tones from my hair, leaving it looking very natural. I find the generic version from Sally Beauty is just as effective and a bit cheaper.

My hair is a very light platinum blonde and this turns the color a refreshing crystal clear white color. Only use this once every week or 2 depending on the brassiness of your hair because if you overuse it your hair will turn that awful silvery grey color (unless you like silver or gray then you can use this shampoo to turn it that color once your hair is a light blonde shade). I love this purple shampoo, in my opinion it works better than the professional shampoos such as joico and AG, although they smell alot better! The smell is a sort of soapy smell, smells how a typical bar of soap would smell. The smell doesn't really matter to me since it works so well.. Some say it dries out the hair. I'm not sure if it does because I use a conditioner right after so as long as you have a good conditioner you shouldn't notice any dryness in your hair afterwards. Would definitely repurchase :) lovely purple shampoo.

I bleached my hair on my own and it came out cray. Literally my hair was brassy yellow/orange and this shampoo did help the brassy become neutral. It will dry hair out so i do recommend a hair mask after using it.

I used this for several months & then my scalp started breaking out. The strong chemical odor was nauseating. It did a great job of maintaining a beautiful color to my grey hair. I had to switch to Sha Kai, which does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate.

I haven't had that horrible yellow/orange blonde you get when you are first transitioning to blonde in a couple years, but I think this works well for keeping brassiness away for me. I give it a 4 since it does well in terms of toning but it is drying, and really does make my hair smell like an old lady. It was under $10 at my local Sally's so I believe if it's worth the money. I recommend mixing this with a moisturizing shampoo since it can be really drying alone.

Okay so I had brassy/ copper colored roots, and the rest of my hair was blonde. What this shampoo did was basically turn the blonde part of my hair into an ashy/purply/gray tinged mess, and my brassy roots still brassy... no change at all. Beware , it will impart a purplish/gray tint to your hair, and dull it out. Thank God it washed out the next time I took a shower. I got this product to get rid of my brassy roots, or tone it down a bit, and it did nothing for me. And, I may be in the minority here, but I LOVE the smell! It smells like Chanel no. 5 to me. Waste of money.

I naturally have dark brow hair. I have bleached hair currently. And I don't want to say I hate this stuff but I definitely don't love it. I feel like it does nothing for my hair. After bleaching my hair it was an orange yellow color. I used this and as far as I can tell nothing happened. I toned my hair the same day...and it got rid of most of the brassiness. I still had a bit of yellow in the front of my hair around my face. And after washing it with this stuff it was still yellow just a lighter shade, but there was not a dramatic change. It made my hair feel tangled and left this weird old lady scent. Seriously my hair smelled like old lady for a good two days. I'm not going to buy this stuff again.

My hair is originally a very dark brown, and when i bleached my hair back to blonde, my hair turned orange and was sooo brassy, my hair looked like copper. I used this once, and instantly afterwards my hair had all the brassiness gone, it added a nice shine as well. I didn't like that it made your hair feel tangley after using it, and it has a strong "hospital" smell to it i'm not to fond of. It's cheap and it works, but I've read there are better ones than this out there for taking the brassiness out of blonde hair and lightening it.

I love this shampoo! My hairs not platinum blonde, it's heavily highlighted, but it's still really dry and damaged and because it's not all the way blonde, like platinum, it tends to get even more brassy. This shampoo helps keep brassiness away but it's not so pigmented that it turns my hair purple if I use it too often. It also makes my hair crazy shiny, and conditioned without residue like the bottle says. It produces great lather. It makes my hair feel kind of tangled right after washing so at first I was afraid that it would dry my hair out but after using my conditioner and drying my hair it was really soft and not tangly. Oh, and it leaves my hair very clean and full of body. I kind of like the smell, it's clean, but like another reviewer said it also kind of reminds me of opium perfume, so it's like a clean, soapy version of it lol. In any case, it's not strong, and lingers in a mild way that makes your hair smell fresh. My waves were nice and bouncy after it, they tend to either be weighed down or frizzed out. And best of all, this great shampoo is not very expensive!
UPDATE: I'm lowering the rating because I tried the Joico purple shampoo and I like it even better. But this one is still good, especially for the price. The Joico one smells so good too
UPDATE/ this ended up being SO drying and tangled my hair so badly and I got splits everywhere -__- also, the smell got sickening after a while. Joico is good, tressa watercolors is even better And it's actually moisturizing!

I love Shimmer Lights. It really knocks out the brassy tones and leaves your hair bright and vibrant. And I actually love the fragrance of it -it has a fresh, soapy scent. My only complaint about it is that it is so purple that it tends to stain your fingernails a purple-y blue tint.

I use the brunette/red version of this shampoo to maintain the warm tones in my dyed dark auburn hair.

I chose this over the Quantum Riveting Reds (also at Sally Beauty Supply) because Shimmer Lights deposits more of a coppery/warm tone, and Riveting Reds is much cooler in comparison (worth considering if you're trying to decide between the two!)

I do hate the scent of Shimmer Lights, though, and I'm not usually sensitive to fragrance. I just try to compensate by using a nice-smelling conditioner.

Oh my gosh! I never write reviews but this is just too amazing! My backstory: I am naturally an Eastern European medium ash blonde. For the last 4 years I was dying my hair dark brown and then last year I dyed it black. I looked good, however, dying roots every 2.5 weeks is a pain. So this August I started visiting the salon to bleach the black out. A lot of money and damage to my hair later and in September I was a brassy yellow medium blonde. Everyone at the salon oohed and aahed, but I was less then impressed. I asked the stylist to work on the brass and she just put a 'nice toner' in , which promptly departed with my hair with the first wash. I endured the brass for a month to give my hair time to recover, while getting comments from co-workers and friends (oh, you should go back to black, this colour is bad - really l, people, then why the hell I blew 800 to not have black hair and cover my roots all the time?!). This weekend I got Wella natural medium blonde and put it on my hair on 10 volume because I just couldn't stand this anymore. I added ardell red gold corrector and my hair came out dark brown in a strange greenish-goldish shade. Crisis! Anyway, I washed it twice with clarifying shampoo and then color toned down and was dark blonde but the brass was coming through again! At this point I actually decided to try this as I picked it up at Sally's on the advice of the employee there, who patiently spent 15 minutes of her life listening to my hair story. Oh wow, what a difference! I left it on for 5 minutes and the colour is definitely more ash now. Not green, not orange, but ash. Some warmth is still there but I believe that the next wash with this stuff will take care of that! So happy! Definite repurchase.
A word on the smell: I was giggling in the shower as it is definitely as strong as described by others. However, it actually reminds me of my trip to the Dominican last year - the stuff they washed their floor with smelled the same! So the smell brings me a lot of fun memories and I don't mind it. And it's really not that drying. I use conditioners and leave-ins all the time though.

I have only used this product 3 times and haven't really noticed that big of a difference. I have old highlights with platnium blonde highlights as well. I have noticed on the platnium blonde it pigments strands purple which makes it look brighter. So i guess i have noticed a difference. However the 1 amd only reason i DO NOT like this product js bc of the smell. It is absolutely awful!! It is so musky i can't hardly take it! Will be buying a different purple shampoo once this is gone, if i can last that long...

Alright honestly - this stuff is pretty awesome. I've always ever gone darker with my hair since I knew I would look awful as a blonde - but I wanted to try it so bad. I figured I'd dip my toes in and try ombre... at the very least, if it looked awful I could cut it off.

Well, wow - it has been a complete uphill battle trying to get my hair blonde. Seriously, it wouldn't go past the orange stage no matter what I tried. I bleached it about 3 times - each spread 2 weeks apart, all while deep conditioning my hair in between. I tried all sorts of toners and toning shampoos. NOTHING worked. I really didn't want to bleach my hair any more and risk serious damage. I tried this shampoo as a fed up last resort before giving up and cutting it off - no results on day one, which is what I expected. However after one week (washing my hair every couple days and leaving the shampoo in for a couple minutes each time) - WOW. Not as perfect as I'd like, but such an amazing improvement on the orange mess it was. I don't write product reviews often, so when I do - it's saying something.

Definitely worth a shot. Remember - it's not going to make your hair LIGHTER, but it definitely helps erase a lot of the unsightly brass tones. Give it at least a few shampoos until you judge. Good luck!

I LOVE this product. My hair story => I have layered hair, and the top crown part has heavy blonde highlights , the bottom is dark brown

I like this product, I saw people rave about it online, so I figured I give it a try, my hair tends to have brassy tones, so when I read this takes out the brassy/orange/yellow tones I had to try it. Overall it works pretty well, it keeps my highlights from looking yellow and brassy, I use it 2 or 3 times a week, I only use the shampoo though, the price tag is still on it, it says $15.99 but it might of been on sale i forgot its been a while since i got it...,i got the big bottle and its lasted me a year, and me and my sister live together and share this bottle, so it would last 1 person even longer. I recently ran out a few days ago so im going back to get another bottle, the shampoo seems a little drying to my hair, but I use a good conditioner and then a leave in and a mask during the week so overall my hair isn't too dry

and it doesn't do anything to the bottom of my hair the brown color, if anyone was wondering.

This is good for a toning shampoo in that it helps rid the hair of brassiness, but not great. There are better ones out there that are a bit more expensive, but this does work. It is drying, but most toning shampoos are a bit drying, But there are two things about this one will make me never buy this again: One is the scent. It is terrible. It's heavy, cloying, chemically and just indescribable. And most of the perfumes I like are heavy and on the masculine/so called "old lady" side ~ but this is just awful to me personally. I can't handle it. The other is that something in it broke out my back and chest like crazy. And it's summer!! And I am in my thirties! Completely intolerable. So wearing a tank top was embarrassing. Once I stopped it it cleared up thank goodness...but it caused me some uncomfortable moments. So I won't buy this again ever.
