I'm very glad I got a smaller size of this on a deal, because otherwise I'd be kicking myself for spending that much money on a product that essentially does nothing for my skin. I understand that some people may like that it's a bit of an all-purpose product, but to me it's just frustrating, because any way I try it it's just an odd product at the end of the day. I've used it as a fifteen minute mask, I've used it overnight and I've used it as a makeup primer, but it has failed to impress me time after time. Perhaps it'd be more effective on mature skin? I wouldn't recommend it to someone my age anyway. I know it's a long-running favourite of Clarins, and I think maybe today it's not quite as revolutionary as it once was. The scent, at the very least, feels very outdated. It smells like a bit like my grandma's perfume of choice, and no offence to her, but she /is/ 94 years old.

I really hated this. I has a very silicony slip which tell me I could break out from this but over everything It smells so bad I still could smell it hours laters. Very annoying. Had to wash my face.

I got a few samples and only tried those but i was fairly disappointed.

It did absolutely nothing for my skin. It felt dry and sticky and it rolls off my face if i rub. I did not see any difference afterwards and my skin definitely did not feel or look better.

Save your money.

it is a nice pick-me-up product, but it only makes a difference for the first few times you use it, plus you have to be carefull not to roll it off your skin when you apply foundation on top

I've learned that Flash Balm has been around since the '90s, but, honestly, other than the deodorant, I'd never been drawn to Clarins' products. I purchased this when I was looking for a "clear makeup" type product. At first I was disappointed with Flash Balm because I thought the texture and the scent were like Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè, for twice the price. The light, soft scent is similar, but Lait-Crème Concentrè leaves a dewy finish, and Flash Balm is truly invisible. I'm not much of a moisturizer user, so, to me, Flash Balm feels "moist" upon application, and I was afraid of grease and breakouts. For the first use I did a Flash Balm mask, for 15 minutes. My skin felt so good afterward that I decided to use this as a primer/foundation the next day. I was in a hurry, so I applied this and went about my day. At one point I caught sight of my face in my rear view mirror and I did a double-take. It was smooth, even, and MATTE; free of foundation, powder, or blotting paper! Flash Balm absorbs completely, and leaves my skin feeling pliable and shocklingly silky. It leaves a very subtle, "natural" radiance on my skin. I like Flash Balm because it looks and feels so incredibly soft, like baby skin. The directions say to use this 2-3x per week (I have no idea why not every day?), so I've used this every 2-3 days (as mask or weekend makeup) for a couple of weeks. It hasn't caused breakouts, and I'm still amazed at the softness this gives my skin. This really is not an ordinary moisturizer or primer or mask. Now I understand why this is a stand-out product that's been a best-seller for decades. It's too bad it took me so long to hear about it!

UPDATE: The more I use this, the more I love it. It is great for an instant pick-me-up and it's the best primer I've ever used. I read that this "can't be used" everyday, here and there on beauty blogs, but no reasoning source was ever provided to support this claim. It made no sense to me, so I emailed Clarins. They wrote:

Thank you for contacting Clarins,

There is no harm in using Beauty Flash Balm everyday if you wish. You can continue to use to the product the same way you have been doing. It is gentle enough for everyday use.

I've been using this little gem of a product for several decades and still absolutely cannot be without it. I use it as a 20 minute mask before doing my makeup for an evening out and it hydrates and softens and gives me a luminous glow. I've been using it since it came out and always have it on hand. I also use it as an overnight treatment cream and I wake up to more beautiful skin. I also love the way it smells (it has a pretty strong fragrance so if you're fragrance sensitive, you may want to skip this product), like pretty flowers and roses. It's pretty thick and rich and I slather on a thin layer after using my nighttime serum. It plumps fine lines and moisturizes deeply, leaving my face and throat glowing. It's one of those products I inherited from my mother's routine and she had beautiful skin and always taught me to wash my face every night and to use good skin treatment products. I don't use any other Clarins products these days but this one I simply cannot live without. It may be a little old fashioned these days, but it's a tried and true performer in my opinion and will remain a part of my regimen for as long as Clarins makes it. I recently purchased a tube on eBay and was pleased to find that I received the authentic product (you never know, lol!) and I saved myself a considerable sum by buying it this way. Only Dillard's carries Clarins where I live and they don't always stock this product, so I've had to resort to other avenues. I'm truly not sure if this product has been discontinued or not but as long as I can buy the real thing on eBay, I'm not to worried about it. I recommend this product for every woman "of a certain age" who wants hydrated glowing skin.

My skin: Dry-combination, light rosacea , dry patches, dull with large pores and black dots all over my nose area (Hmmph!)

This product makes it: Bright, glowing, even and...tight?!

This stuff really is a miracle in tube. I put it on in the morning on my bare face (moisturized the night before,) and I pat it on my face. REPEAT: You must pat it! If you rub it in! it will not work the way it is supposed to.

So, pat pat pat pat pat :)

As soon as it is applied, I put on my foundation. I've also left it on its own too on days where I don't have time to do my makeup.

Honestly ladies (and gents,) this stuff is expensive, I can only wear it on special occasions but it has dramatic results, for my skin anyway :)

I highly recommend it to anyone who has tired skin and needs that mini lift or pick me up :)

Ahhh, the most mysterious of hyped products...count me among the mystified. The point of this product eluded me for years and yet I kept buying it, hoping that one day I'd experience its magic. This is going to be a long review.

The first time I tried this, I was 18 or 19 and I thought that it did nothing that a normal moisturizer wouldn't do, so I never finished the bottle and it sat unused in a drawer for years. Of course, when I was 18 my skin was perfect and hydrated and lineless.

Fast forward to last year, when I repurchased for use as a moisturizing primer when my skin is dehydrated. I found the preferred application method fussy and time-consuming. It never pilled up on me, but the fear of the dreaded foundation ball-up kept me patting it on a la Lisa Eldridge. This slow and irritating process led impatient me to relegate it to the back of the drawer again. I use Laura Mercier's hydrating primer in hot weather as it's much lighter and the fragrance is not as intense, so for most of the year I really didn't use it anyway.

Fast-fast forward to two weeks ago when I woke up with a hangover and my skin looked like a super-dehydrated nightmare. For some reason I decided to slap this all over my face -- no patting, no precise application of a thin layer. I squirted out a big ol' glob and smeared it thickly all over my face, barbarian-style. I didn't "use it as a mask" like the instructions suggest, but let it sink in over about 20 minutes without rinsing. Lo and behold, I was able to enter the world of the living, with my skin looking like I had spent the morning at a spa instead of moaning over a headache and eating junk food. It didn't cure my headache, but I guess we can only ask so much from life and beauty products.

I used it again today for windburn in place of my normal standby, aloe vera, and the difference was pretty noticeable. I put makeup over it quite incorrectly (buffing! rubbing! the best for windburnt skin!) because I was in a hurry, and it didn't pill at all; however, it had sunk in over about an hour.

Now, I can't feel it tightening like so many claim. In fact, when I put it on, I'm probably using about four times as much as you're supposed to so if it actually tightened anything I'd expect to notice. Maybe in another few years I'll feel it tightening something, I don't know. It does help to plump up my slight smile lines for a little while if I really spackle it on.

With that, I'll probably finish the tube this time. I can't say it's that much more spectacular than any other leave-on mask with a dewy finish, but a) how many of those can you think of? and b) none of the usual suspects (namely Asian sleeping packs and Clinique's overnight moisture deal) remain dewy on my skin without feeling slimy or sticky. Texturally, I can't complain.

I can, however, complain about the price, which is ridiculous for something I slap on with reckless abandon in hangover-fueled desperation. However, even though I'd like to say I won't repurchase it, it seems that my fate is entwined with this random mystery product and I'm sure I'll end up seeing it in my makeup drawer again ten years down the line.

i love this product. the important thing to remember with it is that you cant use it every day, and you shouldnt rub it in.

the way i use it is usually for special occasions or when i want to look incredible all day. After showering i will wash my face like normal and usually use a scrub, but instead of putting on moisturizer i will grab a hazelnut size amount and literally smooth it on my skin from the center outward. super super quick just making sure there is a thin amount all over my face. if you rub it in it wont work. and you have to be quick. too much touching of the product makes it not do its job. you will instantly start feeling your skin get tighter and looking in the mirror you will see it become brighter!!!

after that its up to you whether you will use primer ontop or not. sometimes i do, sometimes i dont. depends also on the foundation i am using.

i absolutely love this product. it makes my jawline incredible, my skin looks beautifully natural. and it doesnt matter how much foundation, highlighter, concealer and contour i use, as long as i apply this as a base, it always looks natural and i always get tons of compliments on my skin. it smells incredible, and feels great on my skin.

i always re-purchase this. but it isnt that often since i rarely ever use it. but its definitely part of my arsenal for looking incredible.

I see a notable difference when I use this. Normally, I mix it with a tiny bit of foundation to even out my skin tone. One morning I forgot, and was thinking I looked tired and a bit not like myself, if that makes sense. I will definitely be buying this for many years to come, unless they do something to the formula or something a lot better for a lot less comes along.
My husband, who uses the Clarins mens lines, has used this on a few occasions with good results as well.
