Where can I start??.. I had been swaying between buying this product or Manic Panic when the decision was finally made. What pulled my decision to Ion was that it was a no drip formula and had some crazy stay power... It was all very true! I went with the colours(sorry if my spelling seems funny but I am Canadian) of Purple and Aqua. The formula is very thick and it took 2 tubes of colour plus some of the Ion Color Brilliance Brights colour diluter. I highly suggest the diluter over using conditioner. The diluter is unpigmented dye where as conditioner contains colour blocking oils that may turn your dye job blotchy. I had prelightened my hair to between a level 7 and 9 as my hair was previously streaked and dyed red so I used a bleach bath so that I did not over lighten my hair and fry it completely. That removed the red and brought the hair between my streaks to around a level 7 to 8 and my streaks to a level 9. I planned out my colour scheme which consisted of horizontal streaks of purple and aqua from my fringe to crown and then from crown to the base of my neck I did vertical streaking in the brick method. I left the colour on for 2 hours as my hair is quite porous and I wanted to absorb as much of the colour as possible. I rinsed and conditioned and styled as usual. I had no bleeding after it dried when brushing my hands through it, any dye that I got on my skin came off easily with baby wipes(Im a Mum so I have lots of those around lol) and it did not bleed onto my white pillow case even with it being very hot in our bedroom. I only have 1 thing I do not really like about the product and that is the packaging I felt like there was some dye I couldnt get out of the tube. That being said It would not stop me from buying this product again, I just figure the cheaper packaging made it possible for the affordable price which was about $7.50 Cdn and there was a deal at Sally's that I got the colour diluter for free with each tube I bought. I will update this in a couple weeks when I see how the fade out is but for now pictures of my dye job are labelled up with the other review pictures!

Bought a lot of these because I had done lots of different colours and touch-ups . I currently don't have bright coloured hair but I will for sure be returning to this brand.Much better than Special Effects , Manic Panic and Splat which I've all used before. Literally lasts months, even colours such as red! Beautiful selection and easy clean up. I don't use vaseline around my hairline and i don't get product on my skin. Just kinda thick mixture, so mix in water or condtioner. Also hard to get all product out of tube. Cheaper than manic panic and lasts longer, too!

I am new to unnatural colors and they were out of MP Hot Hot Pink so I got this in Magenta. WOW!! Gorgeous even over my botched and blotched bleach job. Lasted so far thru 5 washings in tepid water w sulfate free products and some deep conditioning; color just as vibrant. Didnt rinse clear first time and each time I shampoo the suds are pink but it rinses clear w conditioner. Didnt bleed on anything. Scrubs off easily. Didnt Vaseline my hairline. It is VERY THICK so I'm considering doing a 50/50 of MP HHP and Ion Magenta just to try next time but if its broke should I fix it? Email me for pix firstname.lastname@example.org. Can't wait to try BLUE!! I wear black extensions underneath to see if I wana dye down there or not... LOVE black w cool colors :)

I have been dying my hair crayon colors for years. I bleach first then add color. I have used manic panic, punky colours, and a few others. They all fade within a week. ION LASTS FOREVER. I ONLY HAVE TO TOUCH UP ONCE A MONTH. Its super bright. Color stays. Obsessed. Im using this forever.

Not sure I would buy this again. I mixed the red shade with Wen remoist mask 50/50 and left in on my hair an hour. I did not pre-lighten and I had a faded out red to begin with. Probably around level 6. I am now 3 weeks out and my hair is still magenta-ish. This stuff will.not.budge. This semi-permanent has lasted longer than most of my demi's. Crazy. And yes, I used the shade red and got a fuschia-y magenta-y red. I can only imagine what would have happened had I not mixed it with conditioner. I might try it again and mix it with orange. I don't know.

I like this product a lot, save for the fact that it seems like the color just won't take on certain parts of my hair. I've been dying my hair myself for over fifteen years, and I've basically really done almost every color there is. Recently, thanks to a blessed change in my employment status, I was able to do "fun" hair again. Since I couldn't find SFX locally, I went to Sally to try this dye out. I got the hot pink, which I think is called Fuchsia, and Teal. Both turn out really vibrant and pretty on pre-bleached hair, and the teal especially seems to be very long-lasting. However, with both colors there seem to be random patches that I have to go back over after I've rinsed because the color won't grab the hair. I am pretty sure it isn't a product that I am using in my hair, as I've tried doing it after there are no products. Because this dye is so freaking thick, you can thin it out enough to distribute it and still get a very bright, almost neon color. I like using V05 conditioner because it is cheap, but I've also used thicker, more nourishing conditioners with the same results.

Not new to semi permanent unnatural color, got this to save some cost. I did everything I normally do, and the blonde where I bleached is showing thru from just rinsing the dye out. I'm sticking with special effects. The product is just as thick, and actually colors dry bleached hair.

I bleached my hair platinum blonde in july of 2012, and preped it to dye pink. The magenta is fabulous, I left it in for about 45 minutes for a more brilliant color. it is very jewel toned and stays that way for a while- of course you have to take care of it like any dye job, wash with cold water, every other day and once it begins to fade ( for me it was at a month before it faded) i got a bit of hothot pink manic. not as good in my opinion but it revived the color just enough because if i used the ion again instead of the electric hott pink i got before it would have come out a little darker. my hair is shoulder length and I used two tubes, it is very thick creme type and it absolutely does not do any damage. If you want any pictures please feel free to contact me at email@example.com i would be happy to show you what the magenta red and purple dye looks like. next i will be giving a go at an ombre rainbow ;P

For starters, I've tried manic panic, and it totally let me down. The color faded in a week, it wasn't that vivid even though my hair was bleached, and left my hair an ugly faded purple/silver.
This product, on the other hand, lasts FOREVER, is the brightest I've ever used, and even when it faded, it faded into a nice light pink that I've had now for a month. Note: it did NOT turn orange like every other pink I've ever used before.
That said, yeah, its a super thick product. I appreciate this because I don't end up with flecks of color all over my bathroom. I've heard that you can mix it with water to make it more spreadable, but definitely don't mix in conditioner: the molecules will block the color from penetrating in your hand strands.
Always start with clean hair. I recommend blasting it with heat for 10 minutes once its on your hair, then leaving it on for at least an hour (it won't destroy your hair!) Do NOT wash with hot water, this opens the cuticle of the hair and lets the color seep out. Also, don't bother trying to wash your hair til the water runs clean, it probably won't stop bleeding. Get off all the surface product you can, then condition and leave it alone. Don't sleep on a white pillowcase for the first couple days, and the risk of staining should be a lot lower the second time you wash your hair.
Going to try the aqua shade soon, will update if it disappoints, though I doubt it!

Okay let me start of by saying you have to bleach your hair...no exceptions if you are planning on using this product. I've used manic panic and I thought it was okay. But this stuff is great. You have to be at a level 7 or 8 for most colors and a 10 for like two or three of the colors so I recommend going to a pro. Level 10 can be difficult for some people to achieve. Anyway the colors I used were the sky blue and purple. I used them together to get a nice dimensional shade. Let me say this stuff comes in a stupid tube...and does not come out easy. This stuff is thick. I mixed it with water until it became a creamy consistency. I wouldnt ever use conditioner to dilute it..ever. conditioner contains oils and cones that can make to pigment not absorb in to the hair properly. I swear to this the dye with wash right of along with all the color. Oh I applied heat too with a blow dryer. I sort of may have used the blow dryer on the tube too lol it helped to get all the dye out.

It is awesome that they came out with this product. I will state that... BUT this isn't even close to how awesome Manic Panic & Special Effects are. First of all you have to bleach your hair to get any color to show. Special Effects and Manic Panic will show up over non-bleached hair (dark browns & blacks). Color Brilliance Brights will not work unless you bleach your hair (or at least use L'Oreal HiColor). It sucks 'cause other wise this is a decent product that barely bleeds (only when wet). I've tried many different purples because I love the color and wanted some sort of purple hair. Special Effects bled all over the place (even when dry; couldn't touch dry hair or my hands would be purple). This color was pretty cool with working in all but when I tried to touch up my roots the color wouldn't take. Now the directions mention you need to bleach but so do most color dyes. The SA at Sally's did not tell me I needed to bleach my hair prior to this. Nothing was said about that. So that is why I assumed I could use it over my dark brown hair. It will not work. The color won't take. This is a warning to all of you who want to use this. Bleach first or no color. I am discontinuing use because of this (I hate bleaching, the damage & I'm lazy). I was suggested something else in the mean time (Age Beautiful in Darkest Plum Brown-permanent dye). I'll see if that works and write a review.

DO NOT USE FOR ALL OVER COLOR.
I hope my review is worth reading because my complaints don't stem because of misuse, poor application, or damaged hair from the start, but because this is how the product really is, so everyone will be effected by these things.
I'm no stranger to adding unaturally colored dyes to my hair, and my hair is in good condition for the amount of coloring I do to it. I normally use Adore which is probably the best dye I've come across for different colors, and now you'll find out why I'm never abodnoding it again.
After feeling like I needed a little zing to my look, I decided to fulfill my wish of being a bright red head. I picked this up after seeing it at Sally's (and of course was recommended by the clerk...like always).
Bleaching went good, Red came out vibrant, shiny, noticable...and red....VERY red. Love it <3
After 2 days however here are the reasons why this is probably the WORST semi-permanent color I'll ever use (for an all over application at least). Enjoy!
- My hair is 2 inches past shoulders, it took two tubes to cover my head.
- Dye is thick and is NOT easily spreadable. No joke, if you do not mix conditioner/shampoo to it, you will waste an entire tube trying to spread it on the back of your dang head.
- Rinsed in the shower for 20 minutes water ran thick and bright pink. In fact it never stopped dripping, I had to stand away from the water and wrap my hair in a towel so I could rinse the pink off of me without more streaming down my front and back.
NOTE: This dye feels more temporary than anything, like a one day use dye. Definitley not worth the frustration for long term use because it just gets everywhere, even after rinsing hair several times.
- Second day, took another shower, same thing. I'm sitting here with a towel on my head writing this because I decided what to right about in the shower because I'm so let down....seriously.
- STAINS EVERYTHING. I get a little overheated when I sleep and can sweat, so what? Its normal. Ill wake up with red stains across my forehead, and on my ear lobes.
- Avoid water at all costs. Its raining where I am, if my hair gets the slightest too wet, I start dripping hot pink everywhere.
( I am aware semi's will wash out over time, but its as if someone sprayed that colored hairspray your mom bought you for 'crazy hair day' on my whole head.)
- DON'T TOUCH. Too much play with your hair will leave your hands stained.
As vibrant as this color is, its not so much a hassle, as it is distressing. "Oh my god, is my hair dripping?! Is my White shirt Stained? Do I have red stains under my jaw line again? " Thats just too much worrying for someone with such awesome freaking hair okay?!
It's possible two tubes was too much, and it never rinsing clear is my own fault, so I dont doubt that as an option, but man, its terrible.
Could be good for beginners, and maybe those cool people who like to dye their hair to match their favorite teams colors for the game that they paid WAY to much to go see. But thats it. Its crap.
I'll never buy it again. And for the pain and suffering, anytime I see a box of this on the shelf, I'm facing them all the wrong way so they can be shunned like the crap dye it is. SHUNNED!

I've been using this product (in red) for about a year. Words can't describe how much I love this product and color. The cons are mostly associated with the terrible packaging.
PROs: The color is vibrant and bright! It's a beautiful, pinkish-red that really pops. It's very long-lasting! It fades into a wonderful "strawberry cake" color (kind of a dusky light pink). Honestly, I think I like the faded pink better than the just-dyed, vibrant red and the only reason I redye as often as I do is due to new growth. This no-drip formula's consistency is paste-like, which I count as a good thing (no mess). The formula is pretty natural which means I can leave it on for hours without worrying. There's not really a chemical smell and the fragrance is better than most (a light floral?). It doesn't stain your skin! Biggie! A little alcohol or soap will take it right off your face/hands (beware, it does stain your nails). It's super cheap! I buy this for around $4 at Sally's.
CONs: If "packaging quality" had a "0" option, I would've chosen it. The packaging absolutely sucks. The product comes in a horrible metal tube. It's so difficult to squeeze -- it's hard, awkward, and I've actually cut myself trying to squeeze it before! It's impossible to squeeze every last bit out of this container, so you end up wasting a ton of product (I'd estimate about 30% on average). The tubing can perforate, causing leakage and sharp edges. It will stain your shower! However, I just spray a light mist of bleach, leave on for about five minutes, and it rinses right off. So, that's not really a big deal. It bleeds something terrible! However, it only bleeds when soaked. I haven't had any issues with it rubbing off on my pillows or anything else.

Overall: I just used this product in sky blue last night and looove the results. I original had my hair ombred with the ends a platinum color. I took the product and put it on all the blonde which was basically the bottom of my hair. I loved the results the parts where it was more of a pale yellow blonde/ and dark blonde turned a teal/green color. Then it faded down to a sky blue into a cobalt blue very pretty the because I wanted more of an ombre I added some of manic panics ultra violet to the tips and the results are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful and I get sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many compliments. Consistancy: the product is thick but I find this better for the fact that it doesn't run places you don't want it placed at. Though it can be thinned out with a bit of conditioner.
Color: with this it all depends on how much product you use and the color hair you start of with. Another factor is the amount of time it is left on for. If you want a true sky blue lighten it up with conditioner to the desired shade then apply it to platinum blonde or very pale blonde hair. Then don't leave out on long you can always wash it out dry it and apply more to deepen the color. But if you aren't looking for that then using this straight out of the tube and processing it with heat on platinum hair will give you a beautiful royal/ sapphire Color. As stated earlier I added manic panic on the ends to deepen it and get a more vibrant violet color.
Cleanup: it was amazingly easy and fast I got it on my white bathroom sink and shower and it came up without difficulty with bleach. But you have to be very careful as staining goes because my genius selfdidn't use gloves and this stains hands like a Bitch and looks like I killed a Smurf.
Packaging: this is the only downside to the product in my opinion. I hate the tube because at a certain point it gets hard to get product out of it and I had to struggle with scissors to get it out but still had some stuck in there so I have it only 3 lippies in packaging for that. But all in all it its a great product and is dirt cheap so it is a win win and I recommend this to anyone

I have used this dye about 3 times and I love the color. I bought mine in red. Since I already have bleached hair the color looks very bright. I get compliments on the color a lot. :) it's my favorite red dye ever. For me it lasts about 1month. The only downside is that it bleeds so be careful with ur stuff. It's about 4.50 in my area and its cruelty free which is great also:) yes it's thick but I think it's so it sticks better to the hair.

I really like this product. I've been using this product for 4 months now and I love the brightness and vividness of the color. I buy the red one and it stays pretty red for 2 weeks. But I dye it every month because the colour fades pretty quickly but what can you expect from a semi-permanent dye.
Its cheap and for me, Ive been dying hair since I was 10 years old and know how to get the most out of every dying session.
The thing with red is that you need to have a lot of time to maintain and care for it. The sun will fade it, washing too much and especially with hot water so wash it with cold water, and most shampoos and conditioners will fade it.
I'm retiring this hair colour because its A LOT of maintenance and I just want my old hair colour back. But I would recommend this to anyone wanting to dye their hair a crazy hair colour!

After reading many articles, i decided to try the Ion Brights in Sky Blue by dip dying onto my ends. I have darker/auburnish hair and i did not want to bleach/prelighten due to already having bad ends. (i dye my hair a lot!!) anyways, i left it on for probably about 2 hours and hit the ends (which were wrapped in foil) with the hair dryer a couple of times and i love it!! It's pretty dark, but i like it cuz it's not so shocking since my hair is dark as well. Now, i'm VERY used to using the Ion Brilliance line for the natural colors so using the Brights was easy...but super messy!! Why is it when it's an abnormal color, it gets everywhere? anyways, clean up was easy. It got on my face and neck and wiped right off. i used gloves to apply it but when i rinsed it out (leaning over the bath tub) my hands look like i fondled a smurf. Either way, it's only temporary which makes this so much fun! Plus you don't need developer or anything, just the tube of color. Recommend if anyone wants to try this :)
EDIT 1/20/2013: Since I had dyed my ends, I've had to dye all of my hair to a natural color due to a job. I was disappointed because it wasn't very noticeable. Anyways, since my hair was naturally-ish Auburn/Brown, the ends turned teal, which was my goal. (blue plus yellows/reds=teal) I absolutely loved it because it was very tasteful and you didn't have to worry about chalk getting all over your clothes. It did come out a lot for like the first month every time I showered which was kind of annoying, but then again, it does says SEMI-permanent, so can't really complain much there. Again, would I buy it? Yup. It was fun and easy. So why not?

This is probably my favorite unnatural hair dye. The color range is very small but if you can find or mix your desired shade this is the best. It is a very thick concentrated formula so you can mix it with conditioner to your desired texture. I mix about 1 part dye to 1 part conditioner and it is a very bright result. It comes in a professional style squeeze tube and a cute bright box. one tube costs only about 4 dollars and should be enough for short or medium length hair. The best part of this dye is that it does not dye the skin or counters at all. I coudnt believe how easy the clean up is and I have never come across another dye so user friendly. The lasting power is pretty good and the fading is nice and gradual. Ion is a cruelty free brand and these bright shades are very nice.

Let me first start off by saying I usually don't write reviews, especially on beauty products. So for me to write this, it had to be either really amazing or awful. I've been dying my hair non-normal colors now for about 4 years. I started off with an ashy blonde color and used to Ion Light Burgundy Blonde, which made my hair super red. From there on, I loved Ion. Their product was Brilliant as said in their name. It lasted much longer than anything I had used before and after. I switched colors for a few years before trying this branch. I used the purple color on already bleached hair, with about an inch of roots. The color came out great, it was a dark purple, like the boxes color. On my roots, though, it came out a bit less purple, which is what I expect and turned out that I liked it. Compared to the other brands, Ion is much less expensive but it's still a bit more than I would want to pay, which isn't saying much now a days. Anyway, this product is great and once the purple fades I'm going to try the blue. (: I would absolutely recommend it to anyone.
