This softener helps me from the drying effect caused by the deep cleansing foam. Products for oily skin tend to have drying effect. If all of the products have the same oil-control power, you can imagine how dry your face will be. The good thing is that Shiseido provides this softener to soften the skin. So, this softener really helps, and since I have dry surfaces on both my right and left cheek, the SA told me to use this less on the T-zone area, but more on my cheeks.
I will definitely repurchase this. :)

it doesn't work for me at all but irritated my skin. Bought in in the States and used for a mild winter of 14 celcius and it dried me out like anything.
Then I moved to a hot and humid weather and nothing improved. I gave up half ways, half of bottle was in garbage can.

I've only been using the pureness line for about a month now and have noticed a huge difference in my acne prone skin! I use this softener after the foaming cleanser and the combo of both products have cleared up my skin and made is less oily without over drying I will for sure keep using these products

I buy this product for my husband to use. He's got really oily skin but after washing his face with cleansers, it also gets very dry. I've asked him to apply one layer of this daily and it seems to have helped both with the excessively dry or oily condition he gets!

I started using this when the very last of the Kiehl's Tea Tree Oil toner that I'd purchased from all over the country ran out. That was my favorite toner of all time. I was for a long time really not excited about the Shiseido toner. I thought the smell was okay but boring and I thought it didn't leave my skin feeling really super-clean. Probably just missed the medicine-y smell from the tea tree oil in Kiehl's toner. I've been using it for about 3 years now and I'm coming around to liking it a lot. My skin is still so oily that I use it as my moisturizer. Using this toner leaves my face feeling clean and also very dewy, no lie. It doesn't make my face red and it never breaks me out. I thought it was kinda blah during the first two years I had it so I was always trying out other toners (all high end: Boscia, Murad, Henriksen, etc.) and they were not as good. One summer I used Murad's Clarifying toner but I haven't finished the bottle because it made my face red and was too harsh on my skin. I feel like until my face skin really changes in some way, I can keep using this as my toner.

Ahh I love this toner. You can't really expect a toner to change your skin but this does its job. It is very moisturizing and refreshing, and I believe it's alcohol-free? However, the pump is just ugh, most of the time it squirts out too much and sometimes it just gets everywhere.

Very disappointed in the product.. Got this recommend by the sales lady due skin imperfections. I just had a slightly break out and figured this might help.. Applied it to a cotton ball wiping it over my face for about 2 weeks. This didn't do anything for my skin, but break out!!! I would not recommend this to those whom have acne-prone skin like me

I love this product! This was my very first toner. It refreshes and replenishes the skin after I cleanse it. It hydrates the dry cheeks my cleanser have caused. It doesn't burn my pimples, only tingles that is refreshing. I dislike how the pump is, it squirts out uncontrollably, wasting some product on my fingers. The bottle is quite small so I ran out of this product first before I was even half done with my cleanser and moisturizer (Pureness line). It minimizes my pores and I think helped with my blemishes. It is quite expensive for this small bottle. I use this with the shiseido cotton pads after my cleanser immediately. I only need 1-2 pumps and wipe over face gently and wait for 10 seconds for face to absorb. follow up with the matifying moisturzer. I love how it is alcohol-free, which teenagers need.
Will repurchase ::)

My skin is pretty acne-prone and oily. Out of all the softeners I've used, this one was the most light. I thought that it handled my pores pretty well in that it did what it was supposed to do. However, when I forgot to put it on, I saw a noticeable difference with my pores. But without alcohol, my face felt less dry after a good cleanse. I would definitely buy this again if my wallet wasn't housing for flies.

One issue I had with it was that it didn't seem to make my face feel clean. I felt a bit of slippery residue on my face that I didn't like. Other than that, I didn't have any gripes.

Purchased this toner after reading all the fab reviews on MUA and am glad that I did! It's perfect for my combination skin. Although I am acne prone, I also get dry patches from irritation. My previous toners would at times make my skin feel tight and dry leading to further irritation but this toner makes my skin feel soft and smooth - prepping it perfectly for serums and moisturisers. Also, not a bad price - if you can find it online like SN.

I didn't feel like this did much apart from cool and moisten my skin a bit after cleansing. However, it didn't irritate my skin and I suppose the cooling felt nice haha. I don't know about softening though. I didn't get so much of that.

I used to have a lot of red acne marks (guilty of peeling my acne scabs). I also used to break out a lot but this toner helped to make my skin softer. I don't know which is in more effect... this balancing toner or the oil free shiseido moisturizer. But this definitely didn't break me out and I get all the extra makeup that was leftover from washing my face (trust me, I thought I was squeaky clean when washing my face but your products can leave a residue). I rated it a 4 because I never used this toner alone so I can't say it's making all the difference.

I have been using this in conjunction with the Shiseido pureness foaming cleanser a little over 2 weeks and both have healed my skin! I was suffering from a very stubborn and painful flare-up and decided to go back to the Shiseido pureness line after 3+ months of my stubborn and persistent acne...and I'm so glad i did. After washing my face I put about 2 pumps of the softener in my palm, rub it in between my hands and pat all over my face...even on my sensitive eye part area. I tried using a cotton ball at first, but i like the direct face method better. My skin is instantly soothed, smoother, and softer. I also feel like my moisturizer glides on a lot better. I don't think this is designed to unclog pore and take care of blackheads or anything along those line, which i don't mind...but it helps the overall health of your skin, which is what I like. It goes fast though..I've already gone half way through a bottle in 2 weeks. However, I love it so much and the results it gave that I actually just came back from Sephora with another bottle. I don't want my skin to be without it! It's pricey but worth it.
Edit 1/13/12-- been using this product twice daily....still loving it!

For me, it wasn't a bad product. But it wasn't a good product. It didn't really do anything for my skin except make it feel smooth. Though it did smell good. It didn't help with oil control, but at least I didn't break out more. So at this price, it isn't worth it for me to buy it again.

So, I got this the other day at Nordstrom and well, it's just okay. I was hoping this was more for acne-prone people that would help with oil control, but really it just cleansed the skin and helped with the pH balance.

It made my skin feel soft and smooth, but for oil control and helping with acne, it doesn't do much for that. However, if you want a gentle toner with no alcohol and won't sting, this is for you.

I've been a long time user of Shiseido in general, and when I heard that they had a line for acne-prone skin, I had to get it. I got this as part of the "starter" set they have that includes this softener along with a moisturizer and cleanser. This is the only one of the bunch that I actually repurchased though.

I love this softener because it really does soften your skin and get it ready for moisturizer. My face feels completely different if I skip this step, and I end up needing to use way more moisturizer (and if you're like me and you splurge when it comes to moisturizer, you really want to use as less of the product as possible while getting the maximum effect!)

However, this product as part of an acne-combatting line...I'm a bit lukewarm about. I have oily skin with minor acne that tends to flair up every now and then, and this softener didn't do anything at all in improving my acne. It didn't decrease oil production either. That being said, many toners I've used in the past tended to dry the heck out of my skin, so perhaps it's good that it didn't aggravate the situation.

Overall, I really like this product, but it's not my holy grail toner. I'll have to keep looking (and in the meantime, I'll use this :))

I have noticed dramatic results using this product on a regular basis. My skin is smoother, softer, appears more refined and even toned, and is hydrated. I know that sounds like a corny beauty ad, but it is TRUE, at least for me. I even use this on my eye area, it is so gentle and hydrating. You can not ask for anything more from something you wipe over your face for a minute or so. It is amazing what this bottle of what appears to be light blue water can do over time. The key I have noticed is it works its magic over time. In other words, by the time the bottle is close to empty, you see the "Wow, my skin looks GOOD." results. I will repurchase until my skin's needs signifigantly change, and to avoid having to "start over".
One thing I must mention is that I don't have acne or acne prone skin, so I can't tell you how it works for that skin type. I have normal, problem free skin, slightly oily in summer, slightly dry to full on dry in the winter. If you have oily skin I recommend the mattifying moisturizer, I tried that and it will dry you out like nobody's business!

After using this for a week, its time to give my 2 cents about this particular product. The first two days I used this, I got a few pimples in certain area's, but they went away within a day so no biggie. After my skin got used to the product my skin just looks healthier and smoother. I only use it at night with the Shiseido facial cotten and I love what it does for my skin so far. It does seem to run out quickly.

My neck has some obvious stretch marks and this softener made it completely disappear just after a few uses. I got a sample of this so I've only used this a few times but I have already seen dramatic results in my neck. But now that I've stopped using it my skin is back the way it is, a bit better than it used to be but not too noticeable. I don't know the long term effects but it definitely works.

I love this softner or what Shiseido likes to call a lotion. It makes my skin feel fresh moisturized and like silk! Not to mention I LOVE the way it smells! The only con I have with this product is that it runs out so fast. I have had my bottle for about a week and it is 1/3 gone. But other than that is lovely!!
